What's so good?

Dark Sky has been making various strains of house and techno music from a while now, leaning from their 2010 “Crystalised” remix all the way to their recent techno heavy release on 50 Weapons.

With their latest release on New York label Mister Saturday Nights, it’s unsurprising to see the London trio flirting with another of house music’s forefathers: disco.

Combining their own melodic version of house with the disco tinged aesthetic of the label, this is a match made in (house music) heaven.

Future Classic, the eclectic Sydney based label, introduces a new fresh-faced talent. Charles Murdoch, a name like some sort of fictional character out of your favorite detective novel, delivers proper amounts of mystery with his track “No Lungs.” It’s a chilled out, future garage sort of assembly of fuzzed-out synths, deep bass, uplifting melodies, and it’s free for download.

In his short career, Charles has been handpicked to support T.E.E.D, Nicolas Jaar, and Shlohmo, and he’ll be supporting Lapalux and Cashmere Cat at the Sydney Opera House for Vivid Live on May 25.

Murdoch’s debut EP will drop via Future Classic July 2013. Keep an eye on this kid and keep up-to-date via Facebook.

I’m pretty sure that in the past I’ve suggested that Maribou State is one of my favorite remix artists out there (their original work is also pretty bomb). However, this rendition of Fatboy Slim’s “Praise You” leaves me a little uncertain…

The song begins with roughly 1 minute of ambling build-up, giving no hint of the underlying original. Which means that by the time Fatboy Slim’s recognizable vocals are introduced at 1:45, the listener finds themselves easing a sigh of relief.

From there, the song doesn’t really do too much more. There’s some fun warbling bass around 2:40, and the percussion is certainly nice. But overall, I walked away from this one slightly disappointed.

So, why the hell am I sharing it? Because for the unsuspecting listener, I think this one’s going to fit incredibly well in a playlist on downtempo / easy-listening music. While not served best as a standalone, Maribou State’s take on “Praise You” deserves a spot on Indie Shuffle.

If you’re unfamiliar with the name King Dinosaur, then today is a good day to get yourself in the loop. King Dinosaur is a Brighton-based producer who has popped up on Indie Shuffle before, most notably for his remix of Lovepark’s “How Do I See.” Since then, he’s released his How To Feel EP; it’s a great way to spend 15 minutes if you’re a fan of 2-step.

For “When They Could Own It,” which does not appear on the EP, King Dinosaur taps fellow U.K. artist Jake Reid. He adds some moody, captivating vocals to Dino’s dark production. I’m a huge fan of the sounds on this track, which apparently includes a live flute. King Dinosaur brings the deep vibes as always, getting me excited for the B-side of When They Could Own It / Colours, which will be released on May 19, 2013 via Artillery.

It seems that Indie Shuffle favorite Koreless has been busy over the past few months, firstly with his Short Stories project, then his Foals remix, and now the announcement of a new EP, entitled Yugen, accompanied by the release of the track “Sun.”

Clocking in at nearly seven minutes, “Sun” sees a change of direction for Koreless. Rather than the deftly cut vocals and soft chords is something a whole lot more “epic,” if you will, almost orchestral but almost beatless and ambient.

It’s been said that “Sun” will be the start to every DJ set from now on, and perhaps that’s the best way to sum up Koreless’ latest work.

“Who?” lures you in at the outset with smooth classic house chords, winds up with some garage bass, and demands attention with lyrics like, “Who got the biggest ass in the house?”

London-based producer Jack Boean has made a definite crowd pleaser with this track. I can already see the smiles of every girl on the dance floor and the reciprocal nods of the dudes they’re droppin’ it for. I firmly believe there isn’t a soul in the world who wouldn’t feel the good vibrations after a little booty shakin’.

If my investigative skills are on point, Boean also works under the moniker Real, and as coincidence would have it, I blogged about another track of his earlier this month, “you + me,” without even being armed with this information. I guess it’s no coincidence that both tracks are equally as delicious, nor is it strange that I was equally geeked about “Who?” as I was with “you + me.”

Fifteen-year-old prodigy Kyogi, aka Sean Harper, appeared on the Shuffle only once before for a tune called “You Were” — a refreshing collaboration with another up-an-coming producer, Honest.

Kyogi is back, this time with his own knock-out remix of DE$iGNATED’s debut track “Valentine.” Keeping it fresh and funky, Kyogi brightens up the otherwise dingy fuzzhop sound of the original, turning up the dance floor and turning heads, namely some BBC radio 1 noggins.

XLR8R recently gave away this free download from London-based producer Fybe:one, who as well as being a talented producer is also a talented graphic designer, doing the cover for this one himself.

“Irenidae” is a track that reminds of Shlohmo or Lapalux — probably more the latter if we’re honest, combining the glitchy energy of Shlohmo with some UK Garage references that recall Lapalux. Oh, and there’s a harp in there as well!

It all comes together very nicely. We’d firmly recommend heading over to XLR8R for the free download.

I might get shit for saying this, but London Grammar’s new single “Wasting My Young Years” is far better than Florence + The Machine’s “Over The Love.” I know that’s just my opinion and stuff, but I’m totally right.

On that note, you’ll have to forgive me for posting two power ballads in successive days. It’s a little unlike me, but I just don’t think London Grammar should be missed.

“Wasting My Young Years” will be released by the trio on June 16th — probably as a single? Not entirely sure…there hasn’t exactly been a proper press release around this, and official links are sorely lacking. So, what you hear is what you get!

I’m going through Coachella withdrawal today. Just arriving home Monday night from a weekend filled with some of the best musicians in the world, it’s indescribably difficult to jump back into everyday life.

Hands down (or up, I suppose), one of the best sets over the weekend was from ginger-haired UK garage producer Julio Bashmore. An hour and a half of some of the most brilliantly mixed house and garage tracks was more than any fan of those genres could ask for. FCL’s rendition of the 1989 track “It’s You” made it to the dance floor; today, my sighing ears and heart were lucky enough to hear a new take on the already dance-demanding track by Bordertown Beats.

Taking a darker look at the pop-infused original, Bordertown brings a steadily dirty bassline but ever so gloriously leaves the Giselle-esque vocals in tact. The combo is all glam and grime, just the way it should be. Feel the heat, listeners. It wants you here tonight.

I love Disclosure about as much as I love Detroit, and the Lawrence brother’s brought it proper — there were garage tunes, there were house tunes… plenty of music worth of 2-stepping, shoulder bouncing and booty shaking to.

For as young as they are (18 and 21 respectively) and for such a new career, Disclosure stayed true to their roots, or at least the original ideology behind why they started making music. But they’re also chart toppers now, with mainstream hits like “White Noise” and “Latch.” And this is weird, and then it’s not; because aren’t they a garage duo? But wait, there’s a full on pop vocal, is this pop? Does it matter? I mean, I loved those tracks, too. In fact, I’m obsessed with “Latch” and its endlessly sexy video, but then why did I feel so weird hearing it live?

In an interview with Magnetic Mag, Guy noted:

“Obviously we are massive fans of chart music, that’s clear. But it is weird… there has definitely been some crossover of people who would never ever listen to house music or garage but are enjoying ‘Latch.’”

Yeah, I’m with you.

Maybe I’m being too critical, I know that Disclosure can’t bring out the full army at every show. When “White Noise” fell flat because AlunaGeorge wasn’t there bringing it home, that wasn’t Disclosure’s fault. But without Sam Smith commanding the stage for “Latch” or Jessie Ware there repping the “Running” remix, I got confused as to what I was watching. What began as garage house and UK bass set suddenly became a pop show with no focal point.

Maybe I’m jaded, maybe I’ve got the wrong idea, maybe I’m getting too old for this, but the vibe definitely changed with Disclosure’s more pop-driven tracks, and where I couldn’t groove and boogie to garage or house, I stood there like a spoiled child angry that I couldn’t dance, or maybe I just didn’t want to.

Maybe I was just ornery that my hair was still damp and smelled of the red bull vodka some prick spilled on my head, or that the air lingered with the dense smell of that dude in front of me who couldn’t keep the stimulants from his bowels. Possibly I would have had a completely stellar time if it wasn’t for that drunk 20-something asshole who tried to unbutton my shirt and make out with me. But I knew, when the bouncer finally threw him out, that that wasn’t Disclosure’s fault, either. These things happen, as do conflicting touring schedules and limited musical means.

Still, looking over my shoulder at all the 18-year-olds falling in love for the first time over “Latch” and noticing that the only people in the crowd my age were fellow bloggers kind of made me feel both like those teens didn’t belong, but that maybe I didn’t either. Caught between a mad respect for what Disclosure has accomplished and the reality of who they’re currently appealing to, I decided, at least for me, maybe it was best to idolize them from afar.

Howard and Guy were up there just doing what they know, and the majority of the crowd were crazy about it. Kudos were mentally given when Guy (or was it Howard?) belted out some killer, and I mean killer, vocals. (Who knew the boy could sing?! Was I supposed to know that?) I appreciated that they incorporated live instruments for all the people who hear electronic music and go, “but wait, so like, what is happening right now?”

Music is made, music is played, and listening is a pleasure be it house, garage, disco or pop. Even though I left a little confused as to what I had just seen or how I was supposed to feel, I also got the impression the Lawrence brothers may be in a similar state of transition. Comforted with the knowledge that all would be set right as soon as I got home and pressed play, I forgave the Detroit audience for being annoying, and I gave Disclosure the benefit of the doubt. They’re still rad in my book, and though I might avoid the next performance without a hazmat suit, I’m still eager to hear more from the brothers in the future.

This afternoon, I was debating with a friend of mine over genres, specifically “future garage.” His argument was that bloggers are so over-saturated with music that they’ve been referring to anything vague and electronic as future garage. Sort of like the lazy man’s approach to genre selection. This may be true, but I’m not one of those bloggers. I’d sooner create a new genre to describe a song, rather than tag a pre-existing one to an unsuitable track. That’s just confusing and lame, so to those of you that do it — bad bloggers! Bad! Educate yourselves.

Now I’m not the defining voice, but dammit I try to be. So let’s get it straight readers, listeners and bloggers: this new track from Real = “future garage,” and it’s a damn good representation and a damn good track. Note the synth sounds, the way the vocals are chopped/pitched, the bounce of the beat, and the general flow.

If you get lost along the way, use Disclosure for reference. They basically created the genre, and I say “created” like Detroit created techno. Really, future garage has been around for a New York minute. As the name implies, future garage is an amalgamation of all sounds and styles found in the metaphorical “garage,” paired with a forward thinking outlook of all things futuristic and glorious.

Sound familiar? Yeah, it’s basically the ideology behind techno. But as my friend also pointed out, “I mean really, everything is techno” and this is true, because techno started as more of a mindset — a way to be — than a sound. But now I’m starting to confuse myself, so let’s just leave it at that for now and enjoy “You + Me.” It’s as slippery and cool as a slip and slide.

I appreciate when a track doesn’t waste a moment seizing your attention; there’s something sexy about that instant attraction happening through the simplest of means.

The intro of Deetron’s remix of “Reverse Skydiving” teases with a sinister melodic loop and sizzling percussion. It makes you feel dangerous in the most sophisticated way. Forget the irony that saying something makes you feel dangerous isn’t sophisticated at all.

Anabel Englund’s voice enters the mix like red lipstick — it’s striking and classically attractive. I won’t tell you too much more, but stick around until the end for some deep house bass, salvation and a scenic route.

Well shit. This is a great music week! I’ve already got some spetacular jams on my radar, and then there’s the new tune from Welsh producer Ifan Dafydd, “Llonydd,” on the compilation by label Recordiau Lliwgar, released April 1.

Female vocalist Alys Williams definitely makes this track. The post-dub James Blake-esque instrumentals alone are emotive and beautifully constructed, but the added layer of Williams’ cascading, soulful voice takes this track to a new landscape. I’ve never wanted to speak Welsh so badly until listening to this track.

Love & Future Bass II: Kastle, Full Crate & FS Green, Citizen, Kidnap Kid + More

It seems like a satisfying amount of Shufflers appreciated the first Love & Future Bass playlist. I didn’t think I’d be working on a sequel until I realized my digital post-it was quickly filling up with associated tracks to write about, all from the last month.

I’m influenced and stirred by this movement in electronic music. I wouldn’t say it’s recent, but it’s gathering momentum — and for sufficient reason. In this particular set, there’s a lounge-sexy, yet basement-friendly sophistication in full effect; you don’t have to look any further than Full Crate & FS Green’s remix of MNEK’s cover of Disclosure’s single “White Noise” to see what I mean. (If that many heavy-hitters in one sentence doesn’t get you excited, then I don’t what else to tell you!)

I take care to make sure any track in a playlist is compelling enough to appreciate on its own though, so hopefully you’ll enjoy dancing through this encore presentation.

I’m notorious for my critiques of Daughter remixes. I’m still not quite sure what inspired Indie Shuffle to invite me to write for the site after I called this Alle Farben remix of Youth an “emotional tease,” but I’m definitely grateful. Daughter’s music is pretty precious to me, and I get a little overprotective of it; so, when I hear a remix done so right that it makes me jump out of my seat to write about it, I have to do just that.

For me, the entire power of a Daughter track stems from the way that the vocalist distills a maudlin and contemplative prose with such sonic immediacy that you can’t tear yourself away from her voice. A great Daughter rework doesn’t distract through needless flair, bells, and musical solos, as other remixers do. Sure, with some artists you can do that, but with Daughter the rule is never distract, only amplify.

That’s what Philipp Schneider does in his deep house take on “Still.” His synth and looped beats touch the track only to intensify the feeling of dusk taking over one’s soul. In his remix, when she sings:

It’s spiraling down
Biting words like a wolf howling
Hate is spitting out each others mouths

the emotional buildup from his vision makes the words drive like a stake into the center of your heart –relaying a perfect understanding of the song’s emotional core.

What's so good?

Whenever there’s a new track out with the names “Jacques” and “Greene” attached to it, we’re sure to sit up and pay attention.

The Montreal-based producers’ latest offering is “Quicksand,” a track which loops a hypnotic vocal sample under a textured but driving house beat, and is a natural progression in the sound he first announced to the world with “Another Girl.”

We’ve had this on pretty much constantly since he uploaded it to SoundCloud a couple of months back, but as of yet, we have no release info.

What's so good?

After a year-long absence, the production duo behind Sepalcure (Travis Steward of Machinedrum + Praveen Sharma of Braille) are back with a single off their Make You EP, set to release in mid April.

Appropriately titled “Make You,” this song is the perfect introduction into the mysterious world that these two have created for their music, with plenty skittered percussions and danceable grooves. This gauzy, downtempo track loops Whitney Houston’s “sometimes life with make you crazy” lyrics from her “Love Will Save The Day” track, and flips it into unison with the hazy house rhythm that simultaneously surrounds it, ultimately making you want to move around in your swivel chair while your introspectively sit in a dark room.

Now, I’m not one to predict the future or anything, but if “Make You” is any indicator into what we can expect from their soon-to-be-released EP, then we’re in for a serious treat.

What's so good?

The Internet blew up recently after Woodkid released a free download of Brodinksi’s remix of “I Love You.” What began as a simple exercise in uploading the track to SoundCloud (why must you be bafflingly absent from the site, Woodkid?), quickly snowballed into a day of fielding track sourcing requests and a combined 30k listens in a few hours. I don’t remember any Woodkid track hitting that hard, that fast — even “Run Boy Run” was a slow burner until its monumental video hit.

It’s a real testament to the power of Woodkid’s single (which we had the foresight to cover back in February, natch); but Brodinski certainly deserves a good lathering of lavish praise. His chillstep/future garage remix extricates “I Love You” from the warm and fuzzies of chamber pop and gives it a haunting urban feel, replete with an unanticipated drop about two minutes in.

Brodinki’s remix trembles with a hungry, nervous energy that seems like it’s going to tremble into pieces at any moment. A siren wails intermittently in the track to warn against emotions like a ticking time bomb within you, a drunkenly effusive maniac tortured by love.

This is some next level remixing here, and Brodinski should be proud. Check out more on his SoundCloud.

What's so good?

Of course I’m right on top of Kidnap Kid — I’m straight obsessed. He can do no wrong in my eyes, and I would probably never recognize it if he did! But… he doesn’t and he won’t… so let’s move on to the more important matter of talking about how awesome he is.

Kidnap is coming in hard with his latest Rudimental remix, “Waiting All Night.” It’s as solid as it is sparse, with a sort of take-on-the-world attitude. He’s stripped away the crazed break-beat of the original and gets straight to the point.

The lyrics ring out, “I’ve been waiting all night for you” and with Kidnap Kid’s heavy delivery one really gains a sense of urgency, frustration, longing, whatever… it’s all there, deep in the “less is more” philosophy of this stellar edit.

Staying true to his name, Morning High, aka Matthew Lee Hancock, definitely brought our morning up to speed with his new Bonobo remix, “Emkay.”

Clicking and clacking its way into our hearts and filling every cavern with luscious, echoing vocals, “Emkay” offers a biting natural high equivalent to, say, a super potent ginger shot, as opposed to the fleeting energy of every sub-par cup of java.

But if you’re like me and the dirty buzz of caffeine is all you have at your disposal, listening to Morning High’s version of “Emkay” will add a little longevity to your day.

Morning High, is a 21-year-old producer from Atlanta. In my opinion, this Bonobo remix is his best thus far, but I urge you to explore his sounds – follow him on his SoundCloud page or find him on Facebook, and as always, enjoy!

Talk about a complete sonic transformation! Rearranging and remastering up-and-coming Sydney duo Ginger & The Ghost’s “One Type of Dark,” Ta-ku plays up the eeriness. By “adding some serious bite with his signature drum assault,” Ta-ku plays with the contrast of darks and lights and ups and downs in just three minutes time.

Ta-ku’s 2013 schedule is looking pretty promising as he catapults into the spotlight worldwide. Clocking up an uncountable number of releases for labels such as Brownswood and Project Mooncircle, his collaborations with the likes of Chet Faker and Hermitude have really caught our attention — and this track confirms our undivided attention.

“One Type of Dark” includes M.I.A-esque vocals with a trip-hop tricking beat that can be easily imagined in a night life scene, and lets be honest, just about any setting imaginable.

Drums, Slums and Hums. Quite the name, no? Portugal’s Branko is moving quickly towards a mixtape by this name, dropping the single “Waves” along the way.

Roses Gabor, a favorite of mine, throws down vocals on this tightly wound, bass-filled track. Her soulful, soft chords brush on top Branko’s production in the most intelligent design. Elements of hip-hop and future garage are perfectly balanced. This track was love at first listen.

For more from this UK-sounding producer, look for the full release due out April 2, 2013. And I think you should be prepared to dance, if “Waves” is any indication of the tone of the mixtape.

What's so good?

The release of Deadboy’s Blaquewerk EP marks the artist’s first work since 2011, and we’re glad to see him back.

Standout track “Nova” ‘is a play on Deadboy’s formative years in South London — mournful chords, tuned 808 bass lines and precision-crafted breaks bring to mind the pioneering sounds of early drum & bass producers Foul Play, and sounds quite a lot like Burial turning his hand to jungle.

Blaquewerk is out now.
