What's so good?

Natural Child is a three piece rock band from Nashville, TN that have been making music together since 2009. The group sounds like could have played in the 70s with likes of The Rolling Stones, yet their retro indie rock is still hip to today’s crowds, appealing to fans of King Tuff and JEFF The Brotherhood.

“Laid, Paid, And Strange” has classic guitar riffs, solid drum work, and heavy vocals. This song is off Hard In Heaven, the group’s fourth full length album, which was released back in September 2012. This afternoon I’ve been bombarded with amazing tracks that are all screaming to be at the forefront of our Shuffler attention. While all those tracks are cued up and waiting to wow your ears, this new remix from LO has won in most re-plays in an hour, I mean, for me that is – I’m in love with “Let Her Go.”

We’ll have to thank Passenger for the poignant lyrics, “Only know you’ve been high when you’re feeling low, only hate the road when you’ve been missing home, only know you lover her when you let her go, and you let her go.” But LO builds an amazing atmosphere that dances between modern indietronic, house, and bass influences. For me, that retro synth is the cake topper — it’s killin’ me. The full package is one monumental remix from the German producer.

Adult Swim just dropped a compilation of some great garage rock bands playing brand new tunes. This tune is from King Tuff and Gap Dream, and it has a nice mix of both of their unique styles; King Tuff is on vocals and guitar, and Gap Dream provides some interesting instrumental elements.

Also on the free comp are the Black Lips, King Khan, Jeff The Brotherhood, Thee Oh Sees, Mikal Cronin, and Austin’s own OBN III’s. It available for a free download here, definitely a must-grab!

Fifteen-year-old prodigy Kyogi, aka Sean Harper, appeared on the Shuffle only once before for a tune called “You Were” — a refreshing collaboration with another up-an-coming producer, Honest.

Kyogi is back, this time with his own knock-out remix of DE$iGNATED’s debut track “Valentine.” Keeping it fresh and funky, Kyogi brightens up the otherwise dingy fuzzhop sound of the original, turning up the dance floor and turning heads, namely some BBC radio 1 noggins.

Beach Day first appeared on Indie Shuffle back in December with “Walking On The Streets,” and they are now preparing for the release of their debut album Trip Trap Attack, due June 18, 2013 via Kanine Records. I’ve been hoping they would release new music sometime this year and now they have!

“Boys” is their first single off Trip Trap Attack. It’s a fun, girl-powered garage/surf rock track with awesome guitar work, solid drumming, and reverb vocals. It also has an old school 60s sound, yet is still current to the indie rock scene.

Holograms is a four-piece indie rock band with punk roots from Stockholm, Sweden, comprised of Andreas Lagerström (vocals/bass), Anton Strandberg (drums), Anton Spetze (vocals/guitar), and Filip Spetze (synth).

The band is set to drop their second album, Forever, on September 3, 2013 via Captured Tracks. Their first single, “Flesh and Bone,” already has over 10,000 plays in the first three days of being posted. So, we figured it was good time to give them some Indie Shuffle love.

“Flesh and Bone” is a punk song with heart-pounding drum work, quick guitar play, and loud vocals. Enjoy this song as you wait for more tracks from Forever.

Love & Future Bass II: Kastle, Full Crate & FS Green, Citizen, Kidnap Kid + More

It seems like a satisfying amount of Shufflers appreciated the first Love & Future Bass playlist. I didn’t think I’d be working on a sequel until I realized my digital post-it was quickly filling up with associated tracks to write about, all from the last month.

I’m influenced and stirred by this movement in electronic music. I wouldn’t say it’s recent, but it’s gathering momentum — and for sufficient reason. In this particular set, there’s a lounge-sexy, yet basement-friendly sophistication in full effect; you don’t have to look any further than Full Crate & FS Green’s remix of MNEK’s cover of Disclosure’s single “White Noise” to see what I mean. (If that many heavy-hitters in one sentence doesn’t get you excited, then I don’t what else to tell you!)

I take care to make sure any track in a playlist is compelling enough to appreciate on its own though, so hopefully you’ll enjoy dancing through this encore presentation.

Of course I’m right on top of Kidnap Kid — I’m straight obsessed. He can do no wrong in my eyes, and I would probably never recognize it if he did! But… he doesn’t and he won’t… so let’s move on to the more important matter of talking about how awesome he is.

Kidnap is coming in hard with his latest Rudimental remix, “Waiting All Night.” It’s as solid as it is sparse, with a sort of take-on-the-world attitude. He’s stripped away the crazed break-beat of the original and gets straight to the point.

The lyrics ring out, “I’ve been waiting all night for you” and with Kidnap Kid’s heavy delivery one really gains a sense of urgency, frustration, longing, whatever… it’s all there, deep in the “less is more” philosophy of this stellar edit.

Ryan Durkin, a producer out of the East Coast tea dumping city, has just dropped an EP entitled sno.biz. Amongst the four-track release is a gem of a tune called “wh.ee.ly.” Dabbling through many genres, influences from hip-hop, house and garage are heard throughout. Me, well, I’m a super fan of this bass-fattened track.

There’s absolutely nothing I don’t like about this new remix from Timothy James Worthington, aka Maths Time Joy (say that five times fast, dare you.) The 22-year-old UK native lays out a minimal garage track that’s both smartly seductive and comfortably chill.

“Addicted” is the latest from DrDr, a UK threesome comprised of production duo Chris Campbell and Joe Woods, along with vocalist Donna Cursons. Their EP, No Compromise, drops March 24, 2013 via heavy weight label, Champion Records and is a lush display of house and garage flavors.

Also well worth a listen is the tropical rendition from Polkadot which beefs up the bass and pulls a brightness out of the depths of deep house.

I’m not sure if Eagles & Butterflies has slipped into category “senseless obsession” or I’m riding out a E&B phase, but senseless or not, Chris Barratt is building a foundation of style strong enough to stand it’s own.

Barratt’s productions aren’t shy about their 90s influence, but putting a finger on his exact style is difficult. It’s got a swing like house, future atmosphere like trance, and an attitude like bass… I’m usually good at this… let’s call it… trance step! Eh? Eh? People will hate me for that.

“Eagles” is the B-side to “Butterflies” — Eagles or Butterflies; Eagles & Butterflies, now they’re both viable options depending on how you’re listening. Though the two tracks are similar in tone, but differ in pace, so whatever your speed or altitude you’re flying, Eagles & Butterflies will have something you’re sure to enjoy.

Two new James Blake singles have revealed themselves today: a radio rip titled “Voyeur” and now this single, “Digital Lion.” Not sure if either of them are official, but that’s not going to stop us from posting…

I’m going to cut to the chase here: both of these new singles today are pretty dull. “Digital Lion” is the better of the two, perhaps owing to Brian Eno’s influence, but ultimately it ends up a bit of a bore. There’s no way I’d want to see this live…

In case you’re curious, both come off his upcoming album titled Overgrown — the same album you’ll find the amazing track “Retrograde.” I’m sure you’ll be hearing more from us.

If you’re wondering just how far-reaching the future garage wave has spread, here’s a little taste of how it translates in Indonesia.

The intro vocal sample sets the tone: “You know how to whistle, don’t ya Steve. Just put your lips together and blow.” It’s a memorable quote from the movie To Have and Have Not, hence the choice in cover art, and an enticing way to start out the track. One gets the sense, as RHST builds this musical love story, that “Whistles” is a reflection of his own story as a budding new producer.

Compared to his UK garage counterparts, there’s a subtle difference to RHST’s style. It’s softer around the edges, but powerfully progressive. His keen choice of vocal samples perfectly nestle into the chill atmospheric blend of arpeggiated instrumentation and lush pads.

With only one track, it’s hard to say what’s in store for RHST, but if we never hear another sound, at least “Whistles” has us intrigued.

¡Vamos! sound is a bold and brazen rehash of psychedelic rock mixed with a punk ethos, a fervor beholden to the blues, and topped off with a brash lyrical sensibility that leaves you stumblebum, with hooks to toss with friends.

¡Vamos¡ is a party in motion, imploring that we recall and immerse ourselves in a time when music weighed more than gadgets and the gregarious expectations they tow. A time when sharing and liking was about listening to music with friends, not about accompanying acquaintances on digital walkabouts.

¡Vamos! has quickly established themselves in Chicago and soon will pluck the heartstrings of the rest of America, starting with SXSW. Do you remember a track called “Only Flaw” that we hyped several days back? It was the debut single from an English production duo named Wayward. I still don’t know much about the men behind the moniker, but I can say that Wayward reps the hell out of London and Leeds with their ambient dance tunes.

I can also say that I’m stoked to premiere their new single. “Marvin” reminds me of a wonderful Cosmic Kids track titled “Freight to My Soul.” I used the word graceful in complimenting Cosmic Kids production on that release. Same goes for Wayward and their ambient style. “Marvin” moves at its own pace, vibing with such a gentle, authentic warmth.

Love & Future Bass: Disclosure, Full Crate x Mar, Polkadot + More

I know you were sitting there thinking, “All I really need is some love and future bass.” Well, you came to the right place, because Indie Shuffle grants musical wishes on the daily, so go ahead and press play.

Some of you were more likely thinking, “What is future bass anyways?” As this world of ours continues to melt together, we’re understandably culturally confused (or enthused), especially when it comes to slicing producers, who don’t want to be stifled, into their electronic genres.

With that said, all I have is an ambiguous answer for you — it’s post-dubstep, future garage, 2step, UK funky, soul, R&B, house, hip-hop and something I’m forgetting. Since someone had to give all of those raindrops bouncing off one discernible umbrella a name, it was decided somewhere (by someone with a British accent, most likely) to be called future bass.

I took part of this umbrella, a subtle sample drenched in danceable vocals, and saved it for this rainy day (enough with the metaphor, I know). Anyway, it’s probably only raining where I am. Where I should be, off the Arabian coastline dancing in the Goa sunshine, I’d still be listening to this playlist, and you should be too. So, one, two, three… go.

What’s that you say — ambient London dance music isn’t really your thing? Before you go, I kindly ask you to consider giving the scene another chance. It would seem that UK-based Wayward is just getting warmed up.

Not much in terms of a biography on Wayward, whose Facebook page has less than 500 fans. Don’t let that discourage you from jumping on this bandwagon early. though. “Only Flaw” is a beautiful tune, dancing somewhere between tropical house and future garage. It’s got those great Kidnap Kid vibes I’ve been soaking up lately.

Wayward have a new track by the name of “Marvin” set to be released soon. Keep and eye and an ear out that!

What's so good?

Toronto’s Decades is a catchy post-punk outfit that’s quickly on the rise while building buzz for their upcoming self-titled LP set to release on April 30, 2013.

“Tonight Again” is an ambient-drenched ballad that’s slightly melancholy, with a touch of glimmering punk-pop to boot. The fact that this band is a four-piece makes the composition of this song even more impressing and elusive. It’s slightly heart-breaking, filled with conviction and really magnetic. Each instrument holds its own while encapsulating an enveloping orchestral post-punk anthem.

It’s obvious that Decades has great taste and great execution. I can only wait patiently until April 30 to find out what else they have up their sleeves. Until then, check out their video for this single.

What's so good?

It’s finally here!!! I’ve been waiting for this release, impatiently so, since it debuted on Diplo & Friends.

Gorgon City (Black Butter Records’ next break-out act) has so much going for them with this track. First off, they’ve titled it “Thor” — instantly this conjures images of an untouchably sexy, super strong, hammer-wielding extraterrestrial king. Next, I picture Thor roaming around the cosmos fighting evil, being a badass, with Gorgon City as his soundtrack. For reasons beyond me, this triggers something that I can only describe as an internal typhoon.

“Thor” will turn you inside out and melt you helplessly into the floor boards, where you’ll then reanimate amidst a million sweaty bodies raving in the grimy underground of Gorgon (city), as the Matt & Kye slam away on the decks. Just close your eyes and listen, it won’t take you long to “get there.”

But the excitement doesn’t stop with “Thor” – Real EP is a four track explosion of awesome. “Athena,” downloadable via XLR8R, is a cocksure, guttural growl, while “10 Below“ is not only the secret directions to the fantastical aforementioned rave, but it’s a deeply satisfying track. “Real“ probably deserves its own post, but before I get there, know it packs a superbly booming future bass, with vocals so soulful and ripe you’ll want to eat your way right into the track.

Real EP will be available on February 17, 2013 and holy hell, get excited. Real talk.

Are you tired of James Blake’s “Retrograde” yet?? I didn’t think so.

I probably couldn’t listen to an entire album of an original plus its remixes by anyone other than James Blake. Of course this isn’t an album, but it’s another brilliant remix to add to your playlist, in addition to Mokhov’s trip-hop version we dropped this past weekend.

Gábor Deutsch introduces “Retrograde” to ambient garage. It’s difficult to ignore, and necessary to pay attention to Blake’s voice, but we are seemingly given a visual of his mind’s inner workings. After the glittering distortion subsides, a female siren haunts the memory. Instinctively, Blake’s voice cries out and the percussion shudders. A medley of emotions sound their individual alarms, disturbing the already-dense atmosphere, before it gradually distills itself.

Are you looking to unwind and have an uninhibited good time? Perhaps you should take some pointers from Sunshine in the form of their new video for “Showering With Wine.”

From start to finish, this video showcases what it’s like to just not give a fuck. And sometimes, not giving a fuck can be really fun and cathartic. As you can see, Sunshine’s characters for this video take on the night without a care in the world. Now, we’re not condoning defacing public property, but if you feel the need to dress up as a fictional character and have a night out on the town, more power to you. Just don’t forget to include Sunshine’s grunge pop anthem to hype up the night.

The carefree vibe that Sunshine projects with such ease is the perfect kind of music to listen to when you just want to forget about it all. Just don’t forget to watch the video for “Showering With Wine.”

What's so good?

Meet Cocktails, a self-described slop-pop quartet that calls San Francisco home. With their self-titled debut EP set to drop in early February on Father/Daughter Records, I’m doubly excited to support the group.

A song like “No Blondes (In California)” normally wouldn’t appeal to me, but at the 1:09 minute mark, it all clicks. My fingers are tapping, my heading is bobbing, and the lady next to me on the Caltrain ride home is smiling politely.

I have to give a shout out to Lauren. She used to roll with Rio Rio. Now she’s doing big things with Cocktails— like being featured on SPIN. Here’s hoping this post helps a few more music lovers discover Cocktails.

As a heads up, Cocktails will be performing with Warm Soda on February 1, 2013 at the Hemlock Tavern in San Francisco.

Warm Soda is set to release their debut album, Someone For You, in the next week or so, and they released this newest single, “Waiting For Your Call,” in the meantime.

The track further cements their connection and similarities to The Strokes. Usually, I would be a little hesitant with bands that are trying to recreate this sound, but with Warm Soda it seems so natural to them. “Waiting For Your Call” has all the appealing elements of The Strokes — it’s calm, cool and has an underlying attitude to it.

I think I’m going to really like this debut album from the Oakland trio.

iO Sounds – Tough Luck

24-year-old Londoner Rob Burn, a.k.a iO Sounds (formerly iO), doles out a satisfying new tune. “Tough Luck” is old-school house, new-school garage, and everything we love about future bass, all in one track. Well, actually it’s two tracks — a little hard to discern if not for an Infinite Machine vocal cue, but midway through Cloaka chimes in with his unrelenting remix.

Silky vocals, classic chords and an energy that’s as infectious as his label’s excitement, the track will drop Feb. 4, 2013 via Infinite Machine, who states:

“While the vox lament “dunno why this is is happenin’ to me”, the overarching mood is one of hope, and euphoria. A perfect winter-spring transition anthem. Readers of our release notes know that we at Infinite Machine understandably quite like to big up our tunes, but we can’t big this one up enough. Rinse ’til it starts losing kbps.”

It’s no wonder they’re stoked. “Tough Luck” is a solid track, both refined and hard hitting, showing neither iO Sounds nor Infinite Machine are stepping into 2013 lightly.
