What's so good?

This track doesn’t sound like any Shigeto I’ve heard before. Not that that’s a bad thing. Sure, we’ve lost the Shigeto of soaring melodies and honey-rich textures, but in his place is a brooding, funky beatsmith.

With the moody keys and staggering drums that open the song, “Detroit Part 1″ clearly has some Dilla influence on it — which makes sense, given the title’s nod to Jay Dee’s home turf.

But Shigeto hasn’t just given us a knockoff. The song has a far more sophisticated structure than the usual trip-hop fare, and by the end of the track, we’ve been eased into a completely different vibe: a thicket of thumb pianos and dense percussion that’s much more reminiscent of guys like Flying Lotus than it is of the old school.

What's so good?

What makes a good instrumental? For me, especially as of late, there has to be a strong hip-hop underbelly — quick drums, a good loop or two, and probably a little glitch. That’s why we’re here today: to celebrate the awesome instrumentals that Chicago producer Edamame has bestowed upon the world.

We first hyped Edamame’s Coalesce Colors in late March, sharing the EP’s title track. It’s a good representation of the chilled yet passionate vibes that can be found throughout the new release. “Taste Of My” is another wonderful cut that makes me want to dance a little bit; at the same time, it also makes me want to go sit in nature and be quiet for a while.

Edamame knows how to stir emotions with his ambient style, and his latest EP is definitely worth checking out if you’re a fan of electronic instrumentals. Coalesce Colors is available to stream and purchase over at Bandcamp.

What's so good?

“PiNK SPRiTE,” off of FUTUE TRiLL vol. 1 by Tigran MiMoSA, is one of the 21 tracks that has been brought to our attention. Tying together gitch-hop, bass, trip-hop and electronic music into one neatly compact package, “PiNK SPRiTE” (released courtesy of False Idol Music) was incorporated in MiMoSA’s acclaimed 2012 Future Trill Mixxx as well.

Having been on a US tour with Lunice and Kastle in the past, MiM0SA has more recently been busy showing his face at Ultra Music Festival, and will be playing at Noisy Neighbours Festival in Brighton, UK as well as Global Dance Fest in Colorado. MiMoSA refuses to abide by genre barriers, and continues to utilize variety within his bass-central tunes.

“PiNK SPRiTE” is definitely a song to nod (or bang) your head to.

What's so good?

Nothing but love for Project:Mooncircle, who consistently deliver some of the most forward-thinking releases you’ll find floating around these here Interwebs. They helped bring the world Kidsuke, which was definitely one of the most overlooked instrumental albums of 2012.

Lomovolokno is a relatively unknown Russian beatmaker, but don’t let that keep you from listening to “Rope.” There’s a reason Project:Mooncircle chose to hype this guy on Volume 4 of their Faces series. Seems that PMC is well aware of the amazing beats coming out of Russia right now.

Fans of 813′s “Elastique” will definitely enjoy “Rope.” Right off the bat, we know that Lomovolokno is not afraid to experiment. The synths remind me of something Lockah might produce. Then things start to get twisted, and before you know it the clacking has taken over your brain.

Lomovolokno’s two other cuts from Faces Vol. 4 are also unreal. German producer Sieren also has three tracks on the release, but truthfully I haven’t given those beats much of a chance yet. It’s hard to get around to all the other great music out there when I keep replaying “Rope” over and over.

Three weeks ago I shared a teaser of an instrumental track from Chicago producer Edamame and San Francisco producer Nonagon. Now, I’m happy to come full circle and share the finished product, a beautiful piece of glitch-hop titled “Wolf Talk.”

I’m a big fan of the adjustments the track’s undergone in the last few weeks, taking on more of the sound I recognize from other Edamame beats like “Plum Blossom.” You can really feel the way nature and hip-hop influence his productions. Props to Nonagon for repping the Bay Area so well; I’ve been hearing a lot of good instrumental from all over the U.S., especially California.

Damn. The good music just never stops coming, does it? We’re lucky to have some new Nosaj Thing and Toro y Moi for your listening pleasure today.

In September, Sean covered Nosaj’s “Eclipse/Blue,” rightly calling the sound “an introspective, spacey production.” Since then, we’ve been waiting patiently for new tunes. Finally, Try appears. It’s a more synth-based hip-hop track, featuring Chaz’s typical ethereal vocals which pile in around 1:54. Chilled out. Kind of what taking a run down Ocean Beach on a cold morning at 4AM would sound like.

Two of our favorite producers with new material, together on one track… doesn’t get anymore exciting than that! As Stereogum rightly pointed out, it’s been a while since L.A. producer Nosaj Thing released his debut Drift. After four (long) years, we’re stoked to sink our teeth into his follow up effort Home, which drops today on iTunes. Also of note is the new Toro y Moi album – Anything In Return – out on iTunes.

Last time we picked up on Mochipet it was for a live performance at San Francisco’s Cal Academy of Sciences. The show was entertaining, but lost my attention after about 30 minutes (maybe its because I was surrounded by the awesomeness of a nature museum?).

Anyway, I concluded that perhaps I preferred Mochipet in smaller doses. And that belief was verified upon first listen of his Service Lab remix.

Under Mochipet’s control, “Aquatic” becomes a simple, but entertainingly-upbeat tune. The approach is simple, but catchy – a sound certain to keep ears piqued during a live performance.

Back in 5th grade, the first albums I owned were by The Cranberries and Green Day. I thought I’d stick by alternative rock forever. Then I heard The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill and everything changed. No other album produced during my lifetime holds the same place in my mind. I can put that one on at any moment, and I know it’ll be the right time.

I’ve learned to very much appreciate the endurance of soul, hip-hop and R&B. As my musical palette has grown, and as I’ve been exposed to electronic music as a young adult (I’ve grown up in the U.S. after all), I’ve taken a beautiful satisfaction in mixes that pay tribute to the best of hip-hop.

This remix of “Doo Wop” by Pedestrian and Maribou State has a little bit of everything. It’s dance, it’s future garage, it’s house, it’s hip-hop, it’s soul. But most of all, it works — and you can download the track for free over at Pedestrian’s SoundCloud.

You may have heard of the London-based producer, as we ‘ve previously featured his rather perfect remix of Emeli Sande’s “Daddy.” Also, don’t forget about UK’s Maribou State. Follow them on SoundCloud and check out their gorgeous remix of Ultraísta’s “Gold Dayzz.“

Mister Lies brought me to “Cat Gotcha Tongue?!” after posting it with the caption,”WOW WOW WOW I know it’s January but I think I found my favorite track of 2013.”

The last track I got so excited about was Cashmere Cat’s “Mirror Maru.” I therefore shouldn’t have found it surprising that the two have similarly exotic sounds. This is the type of music that makes you want to invent words to describe it. For “Mirror Maru,” I invented a whole story. This time, however, I’m going to hold my tongue and let you bask in amazing bewilderment. I will say that Magma’s voice is the perfectly unexpected dressing for a mix of playful electronic pop.

Herrmutt Lobby – Major Grubert

I knew very little about Brussels-based Herrmutt Lobby when I received an email promoting the “nerds extraordinaire.” Composed of “Kadah Vresky, Back & Forth, scratch composer DJ Swiffer of the Fistfucking crew, and whoever else happens to drop by,” Herrmutt Lobby cut themselves off from the outside world for days at a time in order to have these “massive electronic jam sessions.” The music created is eventually filtered and arranged for proper release.

These jam sessions sound awesome, and “Major Grubert” is proof. In just over four minutes, Herrmutt Lobby run through a gamut of lush, glitchy sounds that end up forming one heck of an electronica track. It may be somewhat jarring for listeners to take in at first, but “Major Grubert” is the kind of experimental beat I expect we’ll hear a lot more from U.S. producers in 2013.

“Major Grubert” appears on Haters Gonna Hate, which will be available this month on Eat Concrete Records. Props to Christophe Lieutenant for the EP’s artwork. Oh, and here’s a fun fact: Herrmutt Lobby does not perform with backing tracks or groove machines, meaning no two lives sets are ever the same.

I love this song. The-Dream is probably one of my favorite male R&B stars (next to Usher and Wale), and this Giraffage remix just hits the spot. It’s nuts.

Giraffage is Bay Area local Charlie Yin. The mutli-instrumentalist producer has been described as “a weaver of refreshingly crisp electro dream pop” who “evokes a woozy yet familiar mood” – a pretty epic description, which he lives up to with this track. You’ll be swimming in smooth beats like it’s 2007 all over again.

What does 2007 sound like? Even more autotune and a well-timed beat. I didn’t think songs like this could improve past their Radio Killa perfection, but it did. And by the way, Charlie’s awesome. He just upgraded his SoundCloud account to have unlimited downloads. As he said himself, have at it. A Christmas miracle!

Sometimes a song comes along that makes you want to hide from the world. You want to carry it in your back pocket and pull it out when you’re alone and feeling hopelessly romantic about music.

Alas, as someone who writes about tracks I care about, it’s with great sadness and pleasure that I share this one with you all. It’s a dream of a song — the kind you want around at night while you’re laying out on a rooftop staring at the stars, having a conversation with a lush, twinkling sky.

I also wanted to keep Mountain Range’s identity a secret, so that one day we can collide fatefully before he becomes musical king of the universe. Again, I guess I’m supposed to let you all meet.

Mountain Range is Stuart Thomas from the UK. He describes his sounds as the product of “old instruments, a laptop, a million awful ideas and a few acceptable ones and endless cups of tea.” I would like to tell Thomas that we should meet over tea and discuss how he must really mean brilliant when he says awful.

What's so good?

Tom Cascino, the man behind San Francisco’s electronic act Broke For Free, just recently dropped his latest EP Gold Can Stay, and it is just as beautiful and inspiring as the rest of his work. After reviewing the lead single “The Gold Lining” for the EP a couple of months ago, I was awfully impressed by Tom’s particularly chill style of production.

The EP is based around the many guitar harmonies and layers that were provided to Tom by Mark Edwards, and so we can say that this is a collaboration of some sort, with “Budding” being another laid back electronic instrumental masterpiece. It’s hard to describe succinctly what’s going on in this track, I can just simply say that the harmonious guitar lines, the atmospherics, and the pulsating beat all just work incredibly well together.

Honestly one of the best things to wake up to in the morning is a little bit of Broke For Free.

I once read a hilarious YouTube comment said something like, “This track sounds like sensual sex on a Sunday afternoon.” Ok, so that’s pretty generic and fits the profile for a lot of R&B tracks. And yet, I couldn’t help but be reminded of that line while listening to this Burn Water Rework of Boyz II Men’s “Can You Stand The Rain.” It’s the kind of slow jam that’ll make all your worries disappear. Like sensual sex on a Sunday afternoon.

A track that’s heavy on the a capella and vocal snippets, it gets started around 1:16. I really enjoy this track overall, but have been unable to find out much about the artist. Seems as if he’s another Aussie producer on SoundCloud under the name of GoGoMusic. Another good track to check out would be his Sun Glitters Bootleg.

Music moves fast here at Indie Shuffle. New tracks are added to the site every day, which means that you may miss an artist or project we hype from time to time. This may have been the case in October when I featured two beautiful electronica cuts from Chicago producer Edamame.

Edamame’s Silhouette EP is currently available for download on Bandcamp for the low price of free ninety-nine. We’ve previously featured two standout tracks from the six track project, “Plum Blossom” and “Rainsticks.” Before you get swept away in those silky productions, though, allow yourself a few minutes to take in the EP’s title track.

“Silhouette” is an oddly appropriate title for this beat and Edamame’s EP. Silhouettes are featureless, which doesn’t necessarily apply to the producer’s layered sound, but there’s no denying that the finished product is solid all the way through.

Oscar Key Sung – WIMLTM

I’m a bit slow on this one, but better late than never. Oscar + Martin’s 2011 debut LP For You was one of my favorites of the year (although I didn’t post about it, don’t ask me why), and the duo of Oscar Slorach-Thorn and Martin King were quickly revered as ones to watch over the coming year.

Oscar Key Sung, one-half of the brilliant Melbourne beatmakers, released his own project at the start of this year, and I only recently stumbled upon it. It came in the form of the Tape Voice EP, which can be found on his SoundCloud.

His track “WIMLTM” was made available a few months back. For those familiar with Oscar + Martin, you’ll enjoy this track’s hiccuping beats and the purring, looped vocal arrangements. It’s modern R&B at its very best.

There’s not much information available on upcoming news for this talented musician, but I’ll be sure to keep up to date with future projects going forward. I promise.

I hadn’t listened to much Kidkanevil or Daisuke Tanabe before, but that hasn’t kept me from enjoying their combined efforts on Kidsuke.

In a nutshell, Kidsuke is a rich blend of bass, hip-hop, and experimental electronica. What sets Kidkanevil and Daisuke Tanabe’s collaborative style apart is their ability to wrap each track in a bow of childlike nostalgia and wonderment.

I’ve decided to feature the extended cut of “Tiny Concrete Blocks.” It’s available on Brownswood electr*c 3. The original version of “Tiny Concrete Blocks” appears on the Project Mooncircle-backed Kidsuke.

Kidkanevil and Daisuke Tanabe have tapped into something wonderful, in my humble opinion. I hope they work together for years to come.

When Atlanta-based producer HeRobust hit the scene in 2011 with his debut EP, Albumin, I had never heard anything like it. From his completely original reworking of old school hip-hop to his creation of distinctly day-time, digital landscapes, I was impressed along with the industry.

With a current remix of Lil Wayne’s “A Milli,” it seems HeRobust is moving in a different direction, most noticeably towards Skrillex’s audience. As one Facebook fan stated, it’s “super fresh, but sometimes I miss the mellow, slurpy, slimey wobbles you threw down on Albumin way back when.”

Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, we gotta let our artists evolve, but we can still reminisce can’t we? Lets float through the daydream, “Crystalinstrumental” off Morning After, and make a toast to “way back when.”

Today, we’ve got a sneak peek of the first single “Austere Coincidences,” off the much-anticipated album Stereo Typing by Berlin-based My Dry Wet Mess (aka Giovanni Civitenga).

According to RA, ”the title comes from Civitenga’s idea to compose the record like a story.” That means that although “Austere Coincidences” is an introduction, it travels quite far by itself.

The glitch aesthetic is layered with angelic melodies and spacey synth, which all moves into new territory via percussion kicks. I find myself quickly carried to a land both exciting and frightening in its unfamiliarity (my heart is beating irregularly?!).

Despite an inability to process the track’s entire culture upon first, second or sixth listen, an intriguing comfort remains long after the journey’s over.

Stereo Typing will make its worldwide debut on Nov. 13th via LA’s Brainfeeder .

Collarbones – Die Young

The wait is over. Collarbones second full-length album Die Young has been released, and it’s brilliant. Completed over the course of a year, this album is made even more incredible given the duo (Marcus Whale and Travis Cook) live in the two Australian cities of Sydney and Adelaide (respectively) – some 1,400km apart.

The album continues in the same vein as its two released singles, “Missing” and “Hypothermia.” Die Young’s modern R&B feel differs from the quirky, disjointed nature of Iconography. Inspired by recollections of their teenage years (crushes, naivety, and an inexperienced heart), the album is a collection of standout tracks overflowing with emotion and intrigue.

As a reviewer, it’s usually relatively easy to pinpoint an album’s standout tracks, but with Die Young it’s virtually impossible. The title track “Die Young” is a throw-back to their first album, with layers of staggering beats providing the perfect back-up to Whale’s yearning vocals. “Teenage Dream” is perhaps the standout for me, a song which screams youthful emotional angst, guaranteed to goose bump, while the celestial tones of the final track “Red” again prompt a multitude of empathy.

The most incredible thing about this album is its ability to hurl the listener back to their awkward, wide-eyed teenage years. Personally, I’ve been following Collarbones for awhile now, so it’s wonderful seeing them getting the attention they deserve. Die Young is a superb piece of work, one of the best of 2012 for me.

Yesterday saw Mochipet play Nightlife at the Cal Academy of Sciences in San Francisco.

Frontman David Wang was joined for the first time by an on-stage live drummer, a new approach that he has been crafting on the back-end but was yet to premiere…until last night.

The cool part? They stuck to the event’s dinosaur theme, entering stage wearing Jurassic masks that reminded me a lot of Deadmau5 (yes, there were LEDs). The crowd was pretty solid to start, and enjoyed the antics greatly. Many found themselves shifting back and forth to the glitch-rock / noise-rock of Mochipet.

That said, I’m not sure this was my favorite kind of live show. Things got pretty redundant — as if I was listening to a modern-day jam band. My favorite parts were the bridges that popped up here and there: a quieter approach that allowed you to actually distinguish the harmonies. Unfortunately, the rest could have been done with in the first five minutes.

Here’s some good vibrations for you: Sango just dropped his Da Rocinha OUTTAKES + Remixes – an experimental musical study of Brazil’s baile funk. It’s a fantastic listen, spanning sounds from ambient chillhop to more bass heavy trap.

Sango is Kai, a 20-year-old producer living in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He’s obsessed with the art of making waveforms and influenced by love from above. I’m way down with his sound and style, conscious music that draws its inspiration from the world. Check out the drums on “Angola Maluca.”

This is a free release – all for the love of music – but any and all donations would help the artist take a trip out to California to play on Soulection Radio Shadow #100. Make it happen.

“Ghost: seems to be a popular word these days when it comes to track titles. It recently popped up as the premiere song for rad mystery band Sr. Sly, and about a month ago it was used in a song title by the talented Petite Noir. Well, today it comes in the form of a funky instrumental from San Francisco-based producer devonwho.

Several listens to “ghostpt2″ has me thinking about UK label Donky Pitch and how devonwho falls right in line with some of the more progressive instrumental work I’ve heard from Keyboard Kid and Moscow. Definitely want to listen to this in a nice pair of headphones at some point if you can.

It’s worth knowing that “ghostpt2″ is one of six tracks found on perfect strangers vol. 2, devonwho’s latest release that you can find over on his Bandcamp.

The cultural scene in East Los Angeles has been exploding for quite some time, and in the electronic music community there’s one night commonly known as the place to be. It’s called the Low End Theory, and it goes down every Wednesday night at a unassuming location called The Airliner in L.A.’s Lincoln Heights.

Once a low-key local night attended by DJs and aspiring producers, art students and their significant others, the party has quickly grown to become a world-renowned launching pad for heavy-hitting electronic artists like Flying Lotus and Nosaj Thing.

Two of these talents have teamed up for a duo unlike any other. The group, aptly named Analogue Monsta, is comprised of Suzi Analogue and TOKiMONSTA. And together, they forge the perfect blend of emerging talent and nu-school artistry.

TOKiMONSTA is a producer at-large – a highly-sought after femme fatale whose textured electronic landscapes have just the right amount of deconstruction to elegantly cross genres while defying what we’ve traditionally come to define as mainstream appeal.

Like many of her peers in a similar genre (Flying Lotus for one), Toki has the flawless ability to deconstruct drum patterns, implement arresting bass lines, and keep the most cynical of listeners guessing at each turn. If the walls of the food truck begin rattling, it’s likely that Toki has just taken the stage.

Suzi, known for signature sultry vocals falling somewhere between Erykah Badu and the late Aaliyah, brings a new panache that is raw and defining of a new generation.

On “Boom,” Suzi Analogue’s vocals lend just the right amount of footing and upright persuasion to make each song on the full-length collaboration a thoughtful listen.

“Boom” is out now via Scion A/V.
