There seems to be a huge crop of beautiful synth-pop artists popping up all over the Internet these days. Today I came across one of the newest: Edith Beake.

Edith Beake is a brother-sister duo from Oak Park, Illinois.  There isn’t a whole lot of info about them out there; for instance, their SoundCloud profile picture is just a plain black image. No Facebook page, no Twitter account…  just a few features on some blogs. However, what they lack in social media, they make up for in musical talent.

Their song “Always In Love,” is an 80s inspired trip into the past.  Kicking off with some simple synthesizer and delicate vocals, the track adds layer after juicy layer until it turns into a sultry dream pop anthem.  It kind of reminds me of being a teenager in love in the summer, and it would probably sound even better while sitting on the hood of a car.  I think it would have been the perfect addition to any of the soundtracks for John Hughes’ classic flicks.

Lucky for us, it still works today.  I can’t wait to see what else Edith Beake has in store for us.

Natasha Kmeto is the master at making simplified yet sophisticated electronic R&B-influenced, soul pop gems.

Her newest single, “Take Out,” from her upcoming LP Crisis (our June 18, 2013), is a galactically charged example of what’s in store for her album. It starts off with her strong vocals and a couple crystal clear bass beats. She’s soon accompanied by some straight-forward harmonies, finger snapping, and a trippy synth. Ladies and gentlemen, meet my new favorite band: Body Language. Their sound is the definition of “feel-good” music, and their latest live video, courtesy of The Wild Honey Pie, is a perfect depiction of that.

They filmed a live version of their song “Charm,” and it’s exactly that. Here’s a new single from the band Poliça! It features Justin Vernon (of Bon Iver) on vocals.

Poliça’s most recent album was a pretty big hit — I really warmed up to the production of it after a while. They use quite a bit of auto-tune, but on this new track it seems like they haven’t laid it on as thick. Poliça’s stripped-down percussion and minimal instruments really carve a spot out in today’s musical landscape. They don’t sound like anyone else; they just sound like themselves.

So, I think we can all agree that Chvrches made a pretty big splash in the music blogosphere last year right? Well let me introduce to you London’s Pawws, aka Lucy Taylor, who may just have what it takes to rival their bordering neighbors.  I had heard a demo of Pawws’ “Slow Love” before today, along with a few other singles, but I always thought this particular number had the most potential — boy, was I right!

It’s certainly a very similar vocal performance to Chvrches, minus the obvious Glaswegian accent from Lauren Mayberry. But Pawws seems to be a somewhat more dance-y affair, with a certain disco/synth infusion in her songs. It will take a little bit of time, but with the patience, enhanced production and a little refinement, I can see London’s Pawws creating some pretty big waves this year.

Hopefully I can find out a bit before information about Lucy before her next release, but until then enjoy this latest offering!

Mmmmm… new raw noir pop music from Bay Area’s Metal Mother. Hailing from the depths of Oakland, the project’s mastermind, Taara Tati, unveils a new track “Prism” from her upcoming sophomore album Ionika… and it’s golden.

While sounding similar to Grimes, Crystal Castles, and Fever Ray, Metal Mother has their own unique sound that is much appreciated.  ”Prism” resonates with a textured and solace sound that offers a visceral experience for the listener.  With various drum arrangements and lofty vocals, the song categorizes much of the current noir pop scene.

Cutting this review to the chase,  Ionika is due on April 16, 2013 on the artist’s own record label, Post Primal.  Honestly, I’ve listened to this track so many times already this morning that I lost count.

Now this is the type of song that I’m all about when I’m organizing and cleaning and just getting shit done. Colossal Mantis‘ “Phases” is a fresh synth pop jam that deserves a listen.

This single may sound simple at first, but if you take the time to pick it apart, there’s a calculated construction that makes this mathematical track sound robotically pure. The many layers of synth coincide with each other and disguise themselves as one, when really, there are many effects happening here. The beat has a late 80s/early 90s feel and the bass encompasses a slightly gritty industrial sound.

“Phases” is a multifaceted, chilled-out atmospheric dream pop jam that can sooth your mind and calm your nerves… and who wouldn’t want that?

This Scandinavian songstress dropped her debut single “Pilgrim” a couple months back with positive fanfare, and with the way music is these days, it’s safe to assume that someone was going to remix it.

Cue MS MR, and their take on “Pilgrim.”  Their wonderful workings take on an interesting new landscape of 80s influence, with a slow jam aesthetic that is easy to vibe to and perfect for a commencement to the weekend. Thanks to this New York troupe, this version takes the original to a more polished level with silky beats and smooth productions, leaving my mind blown and my ears satisfied.

Pilgrim 7″ will be out February 25, 2013 via Chess Club/Neon Gold. Holla holla holla holla.

Yelle’s new track “L’Amour Parfait” opens with the verse “I don’t know what you mean, but it means a lot to me.”  Well, I can agree with half of that, as the rest of the song is in French. Oh, glory days: The Knife have returned. For those who have been waiting impatiently through the flurry of 64kbs webrips and teasers that would make any fan rip their hair out in nervous frustration, you’ll be excited to hear that “Full of Fire” has finally seen the light of day.

“Full of Fire” roars with intensity and takes its EDM origins to an ominous place. It’s a bit like if Jamie xx became possessed by the spirit of a witch house produce,  and then started recording while getting high in the middle of a Crystal Castles concert. It’s chaotic, but it never manages to lose the listener through its daunting 9 minute run time. That said, the first time you listen to the song, it is a bit overwhelming, but the second time, it’s fucking genius how intricate this track is. I can’t believe how much I’ve missed The Knife’s  insane level of talent.

Some bands shortcut the path to resolution of a track’s turmoil, but you never have to worry about that with The Knife. In the first minute, Karen Dreijer Andersson warns the listener “that sometimes I get problems that are hard to solve… questions and answers can take very long,” and then proceeds to gleefully take us along every dark and twisty avenue in her mind towards an open-ended finish. The production and arrangement are sprawling  and amorphous enough to capture the unwinding trauma in one’s brain. Once you get that  exploratory aspect of the song, their vision becomes clear.

Shaking the Habitual, the first album from the band in 7 years, sounds like it’s going to live up to its concept in all of the grandest ways. Check out the short film associated with the video here, and find the official release of the song on Rabid Records’ SoundCloud.

To the credit of those involved, it was probably never supposed to be like that.  Purity Ring has always been a bit hit or miss with me. “Lofticries” is certainly the song that got me into them, but outside of that… eh. So when they sauntered onto stage at the 9:30 Club, the idea that I could possibly take this pure collection of expectations and turn it into something greater — well, it didn’t quite pan out.

It’s not like they were bad. But I can’t really say that I would know first hand. After a seemingly solid start to the evening with the crowd popping “Amenamy” (and it was a good ‘un. I was in the can when it started, and I remember bopping my head toward the urinal), the night took a turn for something not quite as appetizing.

As they were gearing up for song number two, “Crawlersout,” something went astray and they skipped to song three, “Belispeak.” Which is fine, I guess. It’s not like it was a Milli Vanilli indiscretion or Ashlee Simpson devastation. It just left a lot of people confused as to whether or not the rest of the set was just over fabricated shoegazing.

The crowd was a good mix of old and new, nothing beyond some hand-in-the-pocket swaying. The actual stage design was pleasing, with two dozen lamps illuminating to the beat of the songs (it’s hard to explain these lamps, as I heard them described by multiple people as either dangling mini-corndogs or tampons), but the show left much to be desired without a full band.

Which brings me back to the snafu from earlier. If it’s all just pre-recording that affords the stage (and drumset, which was tight) to look fancy with the audio, then what’s the point? It’d be different if they were billed as DJs, but as a band, we come expecting for them to play us something. Her voice was less vocalized from the album, which was nice. But was that all recorded too?

It’s kind of like choosing to take the easy route on ending a review just to do so, like maybe with a bad pun. Something to the affect of, oh, I don’t know — “it was enough to make me want to take this purity ring off”…or something.

2012 was a significant year for blasting the “male electro musician” typecast. Throughout the years, I have heard a bevy of male-dominated electronic music, and from what I can make of these past twelve months, women have undeniably entered the electro genre — and they are diminishing this stereotype with full force.

Coming from all corners of the world, these synth-empowered females have been welcoming interest and praise from magazines and music blogs across the board — and let me say, the attention is well deserved. They don’t hide behind their swarms of synth; these women can actually sing. Some have attained academic training in their craft while their counterparts are self-taught, but each artist carries a distinct sound that is disarmingly beautiful and cannot be contained.

We’ve watched 2012 fall under the female charm; this compilation goes out to the female exponents of cutting-edge electronica. Enjoy.

Joyce is the moniker of 21-year-old London songstress Katherine Fussey, who is also the niece of Bowie guitarist Mick Ronson. This blond bombshell’s re-working of the Wave Machines track “Keep the Lights On” has been a breakthrough gem getting her noticed from blogs all across the world, even Clams Casino has taken a stab at remixing her work.

Frontwoman Patricia Petrone is an experienced soul/rock singer that writes about sex and fills her website with erotic innuendos. Her album is titled Fuck Jams and you can purchase condoms from her bands homepage. Yeah.

Louisa Rose Allen, aka Foxes, is an electronic Londonite that has garnered attention from over a million fans across the globe. With looks similar to Zooey Deschanel and ear-perking productions compatible to the stylings of Jessie Ware, Allen marks her spot on our list just by being a gorgeous electronic artist that might just surprise you by kicking your ass.

Stepping away from the traditional sound of indie pop music, Solange breaks through barriers with this R&B-inspired dance track “Losing You.”  Her retro style is adequately paired with her soul aesthetic, making her music not only audibly pleasing, but visually appealing. If anyone is able to step away from the spotlight of an über-famous sibling and make a name for themselves, it’s Solange. Get it, girl.

Ruth Radelet of Chromatics hypnotizes fans, critics, and even Karl Lagerfeld with her striking vintage looks, incredible voice and stellar stage presence. She brings a needed femininity to an all-male group, like Nico to the Velvet Underground, with music covering themes from sex to violence to more sex. If you didn’t know her before, thankfully now you do.

Canadian weirdo Claire Boucher is one artist that grabbed 2012 by the balls with her synthed-out album Visions and an ever-changing mix of fashion styles. She’s opened tours for Lykke Li, danced with swords and snakes in her music videos, and describes her eclectic mix of styles as “ADD music.” Her musical inspiration can be drawn from the likes of Bjork to Aphex Twin while still managing to sound like everything and nothing you’ve ever heard before.

From her powerhouse pipes to her head-turning looks, this UK artist is opening up a whole new genre of female-fronting pop music while still managing to kill her competition of contemporaries. But don’t let Jessie Ware’s sweet tones fool you — this lady’s got a whole lot of tricks up her sleeve, and I for one am excited to see what she brings to the table in 2013.

What better way to express your badassness than to write a song about how our youth should not have to deal with bullshit that is going on and to just make a new start? Santi sings about “a life worth fighting for” as she fights her way to be one of the coolest bitches around.

I think it’s safe to say that this rapper/singer/model/muse deserves to hold a high spot on this list. From her musical range and rap game genius to her stints in Alexander Wang’s seasonal campaigns, Azealia Banks is probably one of the baddest bitches around. From the age of 20, she was already talking about ruining cunts and calling herself Yung Rapunxel… if that’s not the makings of a badass, I’m not sure what is.

This UK singer joins forces with our favorite stripper-turned-rapper Brooke Candy for a dark and sublime single titled “Cloud Aura.” While it comes as no surprise that this 20-year-old has already crossed over as one of 2012′s breakthrough artists, she is clearly deserving of a spot on the badass list, with her plethora of emotive pop songs and a growing army of producers and artists itching to work alongside her.

Laurel Halo’s LP, Quarantine, is in my top five albums of the year; it’s also easily one of the best I’ve heard in the last five years, if only for its brave undertaking of letting “machines” express emotion in novel ways. On her LP, the machines do more than transmit a semblance of emotion — the artificial intelligence emotes in a world where Halo has literally quarantined herself her surroundings, where “rules stagnate” and “words are just words/that you soon forget.”

In Quarantine, she advocates to not get “addicted to anything, forward motion is the only answer,” but the tone of the music and the lyrics paradoxically found her in a constant loop — as Fiona Apple would put it, lost in “the waves of the blue of [her] oblivion.” Quickly you learn that the machines are her emotions by proxy, and once you do, it’s both an exhilarating and frightening album that captures that moment of unbearable drudgery before rebirth.

But in “Sunlight on the Faded,” her first single since Quarantine, the sonic loops find Halo escaping oblivion where “only the best memories stay, I just want those on loop forever.” The instrumentation cracks open her claustrophobic emotional space for light on a faded mind — and whereas the machines in Quarantinewere a tool for a silhouette of a person to feel again, in “Sunlight on the Faded” they evoke rays of warm light on a sea of sunflowers overgrowing in a city wracked by nuclear holocaust. In the single, she debates herself, saying, “Do you really think that you matter? I see an unknown,” and eventually, after much handwringing, the music fades out for a moment and she decides that she does.  It’s a glorious moment.

“Sunlight on the Faded” is a beautiful transition into her new work, recognizing both the achievement of Quarantine and growing her fan base on her very personal journey (and certainly one that many of her listeners can continue to deeply identify with as well). Check out more at her SoundCloud.

Songs about male bonding tend to get stuck in a vortex of arrested development. Sure, we do more than rambunctious, drunken nights out and ogling together, but you wouldn’t know it by the music that represents us. There are a lot of academic reasons for this, but, simply put, consciously or unconsciously, most male artists avoid potentially orchestrating the soundtrack to the bromance.

Which is a terrible shame, because there is loads of material to mine in this vein. See, for instance, Majical Cloudz’ recent single, “What That Was,” which unabashedly captures the life-giving intimacy of times between him and his best friend, Neil. It sways with a subdued exhilaration much in the same manner as Simon and Garfunkel’s, “The Only Living Boy In New York,” with as much emotional punch — without the uneasy tension — as Sufjan Stevens’ “Futile Devices.”  Free from stereotypical cliches, Majical Cloudz material is able to soar in ways few tracks that on this topic do.

Most of you might know Majical Cloudz from his work with Grimes, as he is featured prominently on her track “Nightmusic,” but he’s also released a largely overlooked previous LP and EP, which you can check out on his Bandcamp. However, with the quality of his recent effort, Turn Turn Turn (which this track can be found on), I predict he’s going to be on the fingertips every indie blogger soon.

I lament that the Thanksgiving weekend produces very few tracks. I was hoping that non-US bands might be releasing new singles, but perhaps they’ve wised up to the fact that it’d be relatively bad timing.

So once again, we’re posting something from a little while ago. Grimes’ “Vanessa,” a single that was released as part of a 12″ split EP with Montreal artist d”Eon back in 2011. While it didn’t make the cut, this track may as well have been part of her much-hyped Visions.

Bottom line: this girl is weird, and so is her music. And apparently lots of people like that.

Finding information on No Ceremony/// can prove to be quite difficult. Do they have Facebook or Twitter accounts? Doesn’t seem like it…and Google comes up empty. What I have been able to glean is that they’re from Manchester, and first made a splash late last year.

For the first six months following their debut, they kept under the radar. No press shots were made available, and the identity of the band’s members remained a mystery.

Then, halfway through 2012, they appeared on stage alongside acts like Alt-J and Stealing Sheep. Cat out of the bag, right? Not really…Beyond music, their online presence is still sorely lacking.

At least we’ve got tracks like this new one, “FEELSOLOW,” to keep our interests piqued.

It took me literally ten seconds to become completely hooked on this song. Chvrches have come out of nowhere and blown up the blogosphere with their latest release “The Mother We Share.” From what little information I have pieced together, Chvrches is an electronic pop trio from Glasgow with “The Mother We Share” being only their second single to date; their other single “Lies” was released a couple of months ago.

The lead female vocalist Lauren Mayberry possesses an extraordinarily rare voice, something very similar to that of Purity Ring’s Megan James. Her voice soars across a barrage of sparkly synths and glitchy hard hitting percussion but still manages to maintain a certain amount of delicacy and grace. I’m going to put this out there – Chvrches are best thing to come out of Scotland since Sean Connery.

Definitely a band to follow in the near future, so get onto it!

Sound Remedy has released this as an unofficial remix, but it sounds a lot like his finished work. I’m going to guess that the length lends to it being unapproachable by the masses, but given Grimes’ usual antics, I don’t expect any of her fans should be turned off.
