N.Y. resident DJ Anubus takes this edit of the classic 1998 hit “Like It Like That” by A Tribe Called Quest and delivers it in a funky new way that is both unexpected and refreshing. With this track, Anubus artfully combines a mixture of funk, soul, hip-hop, and peppers in grooves that make you wanna get on the dance floor. Leave it to this guy to throw down “some smooth ass moombah to get people to rub their nasty bits on each other.” Cheers to that!

Flume and Notorious B.I.G — not much in common, eh? Actually, when you consider these two artists, there are actually a few significant similarities. Both seemed to come from nowhere and gained overnight worldwide notoriety at a young age. Biggie’s debut album, Ready to Die, came out when he was just 22, while Flume’s self-titled LP was released just after his 21st birthday (let’s hope the latter sticks around a little longer than the former!).

What they most have in common, however, is the smoothness of their music. I remember watching a Biggie documentary which compared his rapping style to that of a jazz trumpeter — so on-point was his flow — while Flume’s silky beats contain a heavy hip-hop influence. If only there was a way to put the two of them together! Oh yeah, we live in the 21st century.

Perth natives Jaymee Franchina and Jeremy Smith have done exactly that, grafting some of Biggie’s most familiar raps over most of Flume’s back catalogue. I find that mash-ups often don’t suit, and are often just for novelty value, but these tracks work. This collection is available on Bandcamp for streaming; I’ve picked “Juicy Insane” as my favorite, what’s yours?

I love me a good Distinction remix, so naturally, when I came across this reworked version of Danny Brown’s “Grown Up,” I felt compelled to share.

Distinction is a UK producer that has, time and time again, served up some seriously slick mixes. This thumper is no exception.

Danny Brown’s “Grown Up” is one of those tracks that stays with you minutes after you hear it for the first time. His standout style is packed full of aggression and measures high against many other hip-hop artists out there, so when it’s weighted by Distinction’s knack for bass and electronics, you better believe I’m feelin’ it. Charlie XCX is doing big things. She just released her True Romance album, and last weekend she unveiled this unexpected-yet-killer remix of “What I Like” featuring the lyrical flow of Detroit rapper Danny Brown.

If you’ve taken a peek at both versions, you won’t notice too much difference between them. The remix takes the beats and turns them up a bit, but when laid side by side, the rework stays decently true to the vibe of the original.

I don’t know about you, but I shamelessly love Danny Brown’s ferocious verses. He’s unconventional, yes, but when he throws down, I can’t help but whip out the gangster bitch inside me and dance. His rambunctious nature combined with Charli’s relaxed vocals create something that’s gritty and quite enjoyable.

This past year at SXSW, Kendrick Lamar may have been the most talked about artist. Every second conversation seemed to go something along the lines of: “Did you see Kendrick’s show last night? Are you going to his secret show tomorrow night?” And of course the inevitable observation that “Kendrick is soooo short!”

Anywho, bottom line is that Kendrick has blazed a name for himself as one of the more original hip-hop artists out there. And naturally, with such success comes a flurry of remixes.

This one by Blood Diamonds just happens to be pretty darn good.

Devonté Hynes of the Solange/Blood Orange production fame has gotten together with London trio Mutya Keisha Siobhan for this supersonic reworking of Kendrick Lamar’s “Swimming Pools.”

A couple days back, Hynes tweeted a link to the SoundCloud saying that “the girls felt like having a bit of fun at the end of their last session.” No word on whether or not this track will appear on any upcoming MKS albums, but if Hynes has anything to do with the beat-making side of things, we’re definitely in for some hip-working, dance-infused goodness.

Within the last couple of months, it seems as though artists are all caught up in the music genius of the 90s. With powerful entries from Destiny’s Child to Brandy to Aaliyah, many artists have taken the tracks and spun a web of remixes that still recall the impressions of the originals but add a significant spice of relevance into today’s musical needs.

Since I’m not one to shy away from the power of a good remix, I feel inclined to share with you Montreal producer Kaytranada’s take on the R&B Missy Elliott throwback “Sock It 2 Me.” I’ve got to say, once you hear this version you will never listen to the original the same again. Right from the 45-second mark, a whole new level of energy takes place, making her vocals seem so much more alive. It just redesigns the song to a new world of beastly beats. The sexiness and deep grooves of the original are mostly left untouched, but the chopped-up notes and glitchy deconstructions take it to an underworld of unexpected awesomeness.

Another day, another Knxwledge project. The young boy who seems to drop EPs to coincide with your paychecks is back at it; he’s just uploaded the latest installment in his Hexual.Sealings series onto his Bandcamp.

This series, which focuses on remixes and original productions that center on the sentimental, is on its fourth volume and eighth release. This time around, Knx is rearranging and flipping vocals by Lloyd Banks and Keri Hillson, The Game and Whiz Kalifa; even the mighty R. Kelly himself gets re-imagined.

The shining jewel of the EP, however, is certainly his interpretation of Rihanna’s smash “You Da One.” Going from the arena to the bedroom, Knx brings Rihanna’s infectious vocals into a lo-fi world of muted horns and stuttering drums.

Another day, another Knx remix. At the ripe old age of 24, the Jersey native and L.A. resident has released about as many Bandcamp projects, an All-City Records LP, toured three continents, and collaborated with a handful of MCs and vocalists. What have you done with your life?

The latest entry in his vast digital discography is Hexual.Sealings.Pt.4.b-side_. I don’t really know what else I could say at this point about the guy. Should I say he has the sweet tooth of a 9 year-old? Or that he takes his sock purchases very seriously? Maybe I should mention that he types on iChat the same way he titles his Bandcamp projects. Perhaps it’s enough to say that he continuously finds ways to re-arrange classic from our childhood or that his ear for sampling is far from ordinary.

This particular tune, a re-working of D’angelo’s pre-Voodoo classic, starts off smooth enough and then gets re-flipped halfway through… and yeah, that’s your wig on the ceiling. Go to the Bandcamp and spend some of that cash you were probably going to buy weed with.

If you have been online at all this past week, you’re probably already aware of the Internet sensation/phenomenon known as Baauer’s “Harlem Shake.”

Besides adding her twisted sense of madness, this songstress takes the bombastic track and holds her own with her badass wit and lyrical spit.

Ghost Loft manages to pull off quite a feat on this remix; after hearing it, I find it almost impossible to listen to the original. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the original, but this almost chillstep arrangement turned the song from a power anthem into epic, Fol Chen-esque apocalyptic pop.

Simplifying out the messiness of the chorus (which I never noticed until was an issue — oh, the power of remixes!), Ghost Loft turn this track into a quiet musing almost worthy to be called a Muse track. The use of “mini-drops” during each bridge reminds me of one my favorite tracks to come through to my ears this year Until The Ribbon Breaks’ “Pressure.”

Mini-drops in this song act almost like a camera lens zooming in and out of focus of the singers’ internal conversations, and the haunting nature of the synths allow the listener to become captivated by the need to “let [you] struggle just a little more.”

ESTA rips a dope sample off of M.I.A.’s “Caps Lock” to put together the sexiest thing we’ve heard since DPAT’s Jeremih refix last week. The track has such a suggestive sound — apparently this was the reject song off SEXTAPE. You can bet his releases are only filled with good stuff!

I’m seriously impressed by all of ESTA’s work. I know we say that a lot, but this guy’s something else. His samples always seem choice, and he almost flawlessly blends the grit with the mellow. Exhibit A: “Silhouette,” featuring a Kendrick Lamar sample, and Exhibit B: “IWannaBeDown,” his take on the illustrious Brandy. Expressive remixes that balance chill with upbeat. If I could fall in love with a sound, I would fall in love with this shit. Makes me miss SoCal – perfect cruising tunes. No doubt he’s from San Diego.

With their raw, unfiltered imagery, These South Afrikaan weirdos definitely know how to make me smirk. Their songs and live shows are always an interesting experience, and this rework of “Fok Julie Naaiers” by UK DJ Nero is no exception.

I can’t even begin to explain what their music is comparable to, but this new style of rap rave (also referred to as Zef) is something that cannot be contained. This remix takes the best elements of the unorthodox duo and takes it to the womp womp wobble side of things,with tons of filthy bass productions.

Who knows, I might be on this one alone — but I’m pretty sure this combination of creepy rap and dubstep is the perfect compliment to their singular obscure sound.

I love this song. The-Dream is probably one of my favorite male R&B stars (next to Usher and Wale), and this Giraffage remix just hits the spot. It’s nuts.

Giraffage is Bay Area local Charlie Yin. The mutli-instrumentalist producer has been described as “a weaver of refreshingly crisp electro dream pop” who “evokes a woozy yet familiar mood” – a pretty epic description, which he lives up to with this track. You’ll be swimming in smooth beats like it’s 2007 all over again.

What does 2007 sound like? Even more autotune and a well-timed beat. I didn’t think songs like this could improve past their Radio Killa perfection, but it did. And by the way, Charlie’s awesome. He just upgraded his SoundCloud account to have unlimited downloads. As he said himself, have at it. A Christmas miracle!

Fun fact: did you know that The-Dream co-wrote Bieber’s “Baby”? No wonder it has all those “Ooos!” You can find more of The-Dream on his official website. Ras_G, the Crate Creator, Admiral of Bass and NETERU Beat God, has been creating amp-blowing, trunk-rattling, outer-space beat compositions humbly and on his own terms for years. Since graduating from the turntables at Leimert Park’s famed Project Blowed open mic to an MPC, _G has come into his own. Following the footsteps of his Space Uncle Sun Ra, _G has released a variety of physical and digital projects on various labels, but he is first and foremost a pillar of the Brainfeeder collective. No one commands the bass like _G.

This past October, I had the pleasure and privelege of accompanying our extraterrestrial sound programmer on a mini-tour of Ireland. From Belfast to Dublin to Limerick, Ras pushed sound systems to the limit with a performance of original compositions that he delivered with the agility and improvisation of a master jazzman. Most of the tunes were the same for all three nights, but each was a unique experience.

The track I share today is a special one for a variety of reasons. Before our cross-Atlantic trek, _G was feeling the depths of intergalactic heartbreak. In this state he created the ainaT EP, which he recently delivered for free fitty on his b-earth day as a gift to the world. The EP is a audio reflection and collection of emotions.

“Lentil Quesa-DILLA” is _G’s flip of Miguel Atwood-Ferguson and Carlos Niño’s orchestral interpretation of “Nag Champa,” a J Dilla produced song featured on Common’s 1999 LP, Like Water For Chocolate. Ras’ version is simple and to the point, but as beautiful and engulfing as any of its original sources. As _G himself said during a Q&A in Belfast, “Everything I do is based on feeling. I’ve never learned an instrument, I’ve never taken a class. Everything you’ve ever heard me do is based on feeling.”

Remember The Grey Album? Yeah, Danger Mouse basically ushered in the rage of mashups with it. And virtually no one has lived up to the masterpiece that was his original.

For me, the smooshing together of Jay-Z’s The Black Album with The Beatles The White Album opened up the doorways of hip-hop: until then, I’d lived by the moniker “rap is crap.” How wrong I was!

This week, The High Society released a remastered version of the album. They’ll probably get in trouble, but who cares. This is golden.

Infusing a dancey, trap-like scenery, Nightmare! makes this classic track his own. “Hands on the Wheel (Nightmare! Nightaton Bootleg)” is multifaceted, all-purposed and enveloped with the haunting echo of Lissie’s signature raspy voice.

Much has changed during the progression from the original ScHoolboy Q version featuring A$AP Rocky and Ke’Ondris, but Nightmare! has maintained its alluring demeanor in all forms. Working as a DJ/producer out of Pheonix, Arizona, Nightmare! accentuates the heightened BPM in all his work, including this high energy track.

Describing his style as a combination of “Moombahton,” electro house, dubstep, trap and “Gunslinger,” it’s evident that a lot of genres influence his musical approach, and naturally, that is extensively reflected in the release of the final product.

If this doesn’t make you want to get up and dance, I’m not sure what could.

What's so good?

I bumped into this fun and upbeat remix by Jean Tonique via Hype Machine earlier today, and found it a great song to serve as a pick-me-up.

The last time we featured anything from Jean Tonique he was remixing The Kooks with great success, so seeing him take on hip-hop/soul legends OutKast was a bit of a 180. Fortunately, he does quite well on the track.

Friday Five: Go B.I.G. Or Go Home

This is always a big week for me. For one, it’s my birthday in a few days (aw yeah, Scorpio love!), which always seems to lead to a requisite level of excess, regardless of the age I’m turning.

Also, the Greatest Holiday Of Them All is coming up: Thanksgiving. A holiday where the point is to gorge on delicious, butter-laden foods (if you’re doing it right), all day long. And then feast on leftovers for days after. All in the name of brotherhood and thankfulness and stuff!

What you really need this Thanksgiving is a playlist to dance it out after you’ve recovered from the decadence of the day. And what better way than with a collection of rad remixed and mashed-up tracks from one of the best rappers of them all, one who really knew what it mean to GO BIG? Notorious B.I.G., of course. Scoop Deville has humbly been flying the flag for great music on a commercial level. He has a track record of working with major artists, and his collaborations with Kendrick Lamar and Dr. Dre this year have truly set him apart as a producer. The release of good kid, m.A.A.d city and its two monster Scoop productions (“The Recipe” and “Poetic Justice”) show he’s capable of classic records.

Over the weekend, I caught up with Scoop and chatted a bit about his work with Kendrick, and he was gracious enough to share with us his own remix of “The Recipe,” as part of his Scoopaloops remix series. On the track, he extends his beat out, isolates elements, and brings in the late great B.I.G. for his own take on California’s magic “recipe.”

How did you start working with Kendrick Lamar?
I started working with TDE camp 2008. Jay Rock and I have always been super cool, and Kendrick truly stepped up to the plate with everything. It’s incredible to witness and be apart of such a special movement.

What was it like working with Kendrick on “The Recipe” and having it be the lead single for good kid, m.A.A.d city?
It was a great piece to set the tone for the record and a honor from all angles, from having Dr. Dre rap on it to the group that the actual sample comes from, who better than the Doc himself to showcase that sample properly? It couldn’t of been any other way.

How did you come across that vocal sample?
I was tuned in late at night to KCRW, listening to mixes and new indie artists. That record came on and just put me in a trance, I knew I had to freak that sample. So, I ended up finding it that same night and had it on repeat. When I got back from Atlanta, I went in my studio and came up with the beat. That was actually a year prior to linking up with Dre and TDE.

Explain what’s going on in this Scoop-a-loop remix. It sounds like a different version of the beat.
I wanted to break down the record and pretty much explain in sequence how I created it. The song and beat are still untouchable to me, I had to put something special together for the listeners and fans to vibe to.

Why did you incorporate that B.I.G. line? Was it a coincidence, or did you have that in mind when you originally made the beat?
I heard that song of B.I.G.’s talking about “going back to Cali stricky for the weather women and the weed sticky green.” Personally, I dont know if thats where Kendrick got his inspiration for the concept, but I just felt like it was special, as Biggie was taking to me about the recipe in that very moment. I had to somehow incorporate it with the breakdown of my beat.

How did “Poetic Justice” come to be?
That was another piece that Kendrick was really fucking with at the time, and so was everybody else involved. I didn’t know that Drake would have a feature, it’s unreal to see that record take off the way I always envisioned it. It’s really a timeless piece of art and one of the sexiest sample/original songs of our time — also, the fact that it was even cleared is huge to me.

Did you anticipate it having the impact it has? Folks have been trying to remake that beat and pass it along as the original.
Haha I cant be mad at that, when the smoke settles it’s all love. I always knew that was a special piece for whoever got their hands on it. I knew if it was the right artist and outlet it would certainly blow up.

Whose idea was it to chop up Janet Jackson?
I was vibing with Janet records with some some musician friends one night, and that song came on and the light bulb clicked. I had to freak the sample.

Finally, what should we be looking out for from Scoop Deville in the near future?
Be on the look out for more crazy features with some of the best artist in the hip-hop world and beyond. Also be on the lookout for more remixes, my groups and artist that I’m affiliated with. What's so good?

Back in August, Ariel Pink released his critically acclaimed album Mature Themes. On this album was a slew of ideas, but none that perked my ears as much as the album-closing rendition of Donnie & Joe Emerson’s 1979 gem “Baby.” This soulful version was faithful to the original, but throws lush female vocals into the chorus while breathing in a sweet shoo-bop sensation of the early doo-wop era.

Although SoundCloud failed me in finding Ariel Pink’s version, this touched-up rework comes courtesy of YUNG PH∆R∆ØH, a dude that doubles as a Chicago video/film artist and hip-hop producer. His take on “Baby” opens with a sample of Walt Whitman’s poem “Crossing Brooklyn Ferry” and is taken up a couple notches with uptempo beats and hip-hop grit. It’s a song of accidental greatness in my book, but I’m sure you too will fall under its spell after the first go ’round.

What's so good?

I have absolutely no idea who or what a CAKE DOG is.

I randomly stumbled on his SoundCloud a few weeks ago, and was instantly taken aback by the way he was manipulating something so familiar, yet turning it into this “dance-party-on-coke” extreme. I’m a newbie to many sub-genres of dance and electronic, so I did not immediately make the connection to juke music. Perhaps this is my introduction.

What's so good?

I first met the Tel Aviv Champion that is Cohenbeats about a year or so ago on a trip to L.A. The humble beatmaker was living atop Holy Mount Washington for a few months and our paths crossed through mutual acquaintances. Eventually, he unceremoniously slipped me a beat CD to check out, and I was intrigued.

Fast-forward to earlier this fall, I’m in L.A. once again and I find that Cohenbeats is back there, too. We ran into each other at a Shafiq Husayn performance and, once again, I was given a CD of tunes to check out. I must admit the hogpile of miscellanous crap that is in my vehicle swallowed up said CD for a few weeks before I found it again. I’m glad I did. The growth that the Israeli producer underwent in just under a year was noticeable and impressive.

One of my favorites from that batch was this re-working of the seminal “T.R.O.Y.” by the grand architects Pete Rock and CL Smooth. With a new sample in tow and pitched just a tad bit lower than usual, Cohenbeats found a way to give a timeless classic a fresh spin.
