Second up: can you believe this is a live recording? Turns out Mausi joined Huw Stephens for a BBC Radio 1 session at the start of May, performing this amazing track on the fly. Could have fooled me — the quality and execution is brilliant.

Keep your ears open for more from Mausi: this Newcastle-based quartet is destined to keep making ripples.

Last month, I had the opportunity to cover L.A. resident Goldroom’s live show in San Francisco. Today, I’m bringing you thoughts from the human Josh Legg himself. From music management to DJing to forming a live band, Legg seems to have all the smarts and talent one ever needs. Oh, and he’s down to earth, too.

Your name, your digital persona, your sound, all have a very L.A., SoCal vibe to them. Would you say this more of an on-stage embodiment or an intrinsic part of your real-life personality?
Absolutely real-life. My parents lived in Seal Beach for years before I was born, and their pseudo-hippie sailor lifestyle was always a ‘what-if’ missing chapter of my life. Once I graduated high school, moving to a place that I could be around the ocean and sailing year round was a huge priority. I basically fell in love with Los Angeles right away and have spent the last handful of years really embracing everything out here. Obviously there’s a lot more to me than what comes across to social media, but I’m certainly not crafting some persona that I’m not. Come to Long Beach any Wednesday in the summer and you’ll find me racing Catalina 37s and drinking Mount Gay. Sailing is really my life’s ‘other’ passion besides music. I think it was sort of a blessing that I went into creating Goldroom without wanting to make any kind of persona… for once I just wanted to be me.

Considering the evolution of Goldroom as a music project from a one-man production / DJ outfit to the three-piece band it is today, how do you feel the concept of Goldroom has changed for you personally? I’m specifically thinking of a quote from a Last Gas Station interview you did last year where you stated: “When I think about Goldroom though, it became much more when I started to think about L.A. and the whole Southwestern USA as one giant golden room though, that’s when I started to think about adopting the name.” Does this sentiment still holds true for Goldroom?
As I was saying in the last question, when I moved here, I quickly fell in love with the city of Los Angeles. What I didn’t anticipate, was developing a huge appreciation and love for the surrounding areas. Wine tasting up the central coast, spur of the moment trips over the border to Rosarito, and mind expanding trips out to Joshua Tree… its a world away from what I experienced growing up in Boston. I couldn’t help but be inspired by all of it!

That said, moving forward, I hope that my inspirational palette continues to evolve. I think that I’ll always be inspired by beautiful scenery, the ocean, and the power of adding people to those places… but I don’t necessarily think that Goldroom will ever be exclusively ‘about’ Southern California. This first batch of songs is undeniably tied to the last years of my life living here in LA, but I expect that things will continue to evolve once I finish this record.

Growing up in Boston, you’ve said that you always dreamed of living in a warm, sunny place, and that California has been extremely influential with your music creation. Would you say you’ve brought aspects of Boston into your music as well, and if so what are they?
I’ve been asked this question before, and my answer tends to be that I always used music as an escape to a better place. In reality, youth culture in Boston, at least when I was there, was pretty rooted in classic rock and the jam scene. All of my first live music experiences were seeing guys like Tom Petty, the Allman Brothers, Jimmy Buffet, but also acts like String Cheese and Phish. Honestly I think it was seeing some of the jam bands that opened up my love for big, tension and release style buildups and breakdowns. There’s a huge common thread between a Phish show and a Tiesto set, which is that long periods of time, sometimes ten minutes or more, are all calculated buildups to emotional climaxes. I’ve always been infatuated with melodic based tension and release, and so I think that that made falling for electronic music that much easier once I opened up my ears to it.

You posed a question to me when we were catching up after your last show in San Francisco, asking if I thought people could fall in love with a DJ. I’d like to throw that back to you and and ask if you think a crowd truly can fall in love with a DJ?
I think seeing a DJ perform is much more about lust. Its all sweat and aggression and dancing and sex. You’re probably not singing along with the DJ, and you probably leave the show exhausted. So to answer your question, yes I think you can fall in love with a DJ… but maybe only for a night at a time. You probably don’t take the DJ home to your car, to your bed, and to your parents house. I love DJing so much, because that intensity that comes from a great DJ set is something that cannot be replicated in a live setting.

That said, a live set is so much more intimate. Singing songs that you wrote, and playing them on instruments opens up such a different window. Its really special and getting to connect with people on such a more personal level is truly gratifying as an artist. I feel like you can build a bond that will last a lifetime.

On that note, can you feel a difference from the way crowds receive your music and appreciate your live sets now that you are performing as a band?
Absolutely, and its actually been a total surprise to be honest. I think we underestimated the number of people that maybe wanted to see us, but we’re really into DJs so had never come out before. As I mentioned in the previous question, there is a level of intimacy playing live that just isn’t there DJing. I can make mistakes up there, and the crowd sees every emotion I’m having written all over my face. They know how much more important it is for us, and I think they respond in kind.

Can you describe your ultimate setting to play a show?
I DJd a small festival in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic on the beach this past winter. I was swimming 20 minutes before I played… Honestly I’m not sure how much better it can get than that. Except for maybe playing Coachella (laughs).

The last time I saw you play, you were DJing as an opener for The Magician. Can you describe what it’s been like to move from a one-man opener to a full band headliner?
Somehow its all felt super natural. I think maybe because I DJd in all of the places that we’re now playing live. Introducing a city to the project through a DJ set has been a really great way to ease into the whole touring experience. By the time we’re bringing the live set, people already know what to expect and they’re ready for it. Its been great.

I’ve always been in bands as well, so I always knew Goldroom would go live at some point. I didn’t expect it to be this soon to be honest, but we are where I thought we’d be.

The past year has clearly been big for you. What’s one thing that stands out to you that you know now but didn’t 365 days ago?
I think a year ago I was really hoping to get signed by a record label, publishing company, and all that stuff that most bands hope for. It wasn’t meant to be at that point, and I think sticking to my own plan and self releasing has been the best thing I could have done. Self releasing music is the best thing any young musician can do. You get to keep control of your own art while also being flexible enough to make sure that you release music only when you’re ready. I’m so happy operating on my own right now.

What album do you think is most underrated?
Air – Talkie Walkie / Overshadowed by Moon Safari but still my favorite desert roadtrip album of all time.

Any exciting plans for your other music project NightWaves and your label Binary with Goldroom this year we should keep an eye out for?
NightWaves is something I’m always thinking about and wishing that we could get cranking again. We have an album of material that I’m totally in love with. The three of us are all working on different projects at the moment, but I really hope we finish the album so that everyone can hear it.

Binary is alive and well and I think the next year will definitely see us release some exciting music. Its been tough doing some of the label stuff while also keeping up with Goldroom touring and writing, but I really hope to keep things moving forward on that end.

As for Goldroom… I’m working on my full length album. I have a lot of material for it, and I’m still working on writing and polishing the whole thing!

This afternoon I’ve been bombarded with amazing tracks that are all screaming to be at the forefront of our Shuffler attention. While all those tracks are cued up and waiting to wow your ears, this new remix from LO has won in most re-plays in an hour, I mean, for me that is – I’m in love with “Let Her Go.”

We’ll have to thank Passenger for the poignant lyrics, “Only know you’ve been high when you’re feeling low, only hate the road when you’ve been missing home, only know you lover her when you let her go, and you let her go.” But LO builds an amazing atmosphere that dances between modern indietronic, house, and bass influences. For me, that retro synth is the cake topper — it’s killin’ me. The full package is one monumental remix from the German producer.

We haven’t even reached the solstice yet, but this track is infused with enough sunlight to be whimpering for the title of “first official track of summer.” A tip of the hat to fellow Indie Shuffle writer, Justin Lam, for covering the original back in March; but, St. Lucia’s take is just phenomenally more high-energy — and maybe superior to the original?

St. Lucia’s sexy synth slithers right in within the first 20 seconds, stamping it with his tropical vibes. It’s like it skitters across the surface of your heart, tender and defiant at the same time, which fits “Little Games” break-up song dynamic perfectly. Wary of creating a wall of sound, St. Lucia is smart to use the bridges to ebb the energy of the song before flowing back right in your face.

It makes for the perfect summer dance floor rhythm: Long Island in hand, you can take a chug of your drink and still be back in time to get freaky and sing-shout the stanzas as you meld into the crowd, memories of former lovers quickly dissipating into euphoria.

Last year, Sean O introduced us to Dallas native and producing maestro Neo-Safari. A couple EPs later and Neo-Safari has now brought us his take on the Classixx track, “Borderline.”

Jennifer Page’s “Crush” was a solid repeat on my mixtapes of yesteryear. I distinctly remember sitting shotgun in my mom’s suburban, rocking out to this track on my Discman, hoping one day that I would be able to reference this song into my life somehow. It’s been a minute since I’ve heard it, but when I saw that Jai Paul recorded an electronic-infused cover, I had to check it out.

Uploaded on an untitled Bandcamp album, this version of the 1998 chart topper is an interesting hybrid baby of pop, electronic and funk – a track perfect to get this next weekend started in a sexy-smooth fashion. Is that a touch of Prince-inspired falsetto I hear? Maybe a little D’Angelo soul? Whatever it may be, light a candle and give it a listen.

Block x Blog 2013: Festival Preview, Ft. Millionyoung, Jacuzzi Boys, Holy Ghost! + More

Block x Blog is a festival of music and arts celebrating the nostalgia of going to a record store and playing video games at an old arcade. On Saturday, April 20, 2013, Block x Blog will bring together a line-up of national and local musicians, DJs, curated art galleries, and pop-up shops of local businesses and vendors within America’s Backyard, Green Room Nightclub, and Revolution Live, located in downtown Fort Lauderdale.

The event kicks off at America’s Backyard at 6PM, where Black Locust Society, Lil Daggers, local rappers and DJs will be playing for free. There will also be local vendors, including The Fine Print Shoppe, Iron Forge Press, and many others selling goods themed for Block x Blog.

At 8PM, Green Room Nightclub will host rock musicians, including Jacuzzi Boys, Suede Dudes, Ex Norwegian, The Gun Hoes, and many more. Radio-Active Records, Limited Fanfare Records, South Florida Music Obsessed, and New Times are presenting this part of the event, and will also be celebrating National Record Store Day.

If electronica is more your thing, then head over to Revolution Live at the same time. Subculture, 3J Hospitality, and Chicago-based music site Consequence of Sound will presenting headliner Holy Ghost!, Deaf Poets, Krisp, Millionyoung, Plains, and others until the ripe time of 4AM.

So, it’s official. I can crown The Colourist as the newest masters of the party pop scene. I know we’ve only heard two singles so far, but “Yes Yes” is indeed as good as their highly regarded debut “Little Games.” Remember how I said that these guys were my happiness pill? Well, it looks like I’ll be riding a high for quite some time now.

What makes this band so appealing? I guess more than anything it’s the fact that they just like to have fun with their music. It’s bright, jangly and catchy — there’s not much more you can ask from these guys, and it seems like they have the recipe for success.

Open up wide, because today’s your daily dose of that sugary pop we all love to take.

Live in San Francisco: Phoenix

When Phoenix announced that they would be making a quick stop in San Francisco before they hit the Coachella Weekend 1 circuit, everyone within a 40 mile radius was itching to guarantee themselves a spot at one of San Francisco’s smallest venues.

On April 1, fresh on their first tour in two years, these French troubadours came, sang and conquered The Independent with opener Mac DeMarco by their side. Playing a 500-capicity venue is not a typical night for Phoenix – these dudes can be seen selling out amphitheaters all across the world – and after years of not touring, it came as a complete surprise that they decided to take the smaller route than to go big, but hey, I’m not complaining.

As the lights finally dimmed to a red hue at around 9:45pm, the mixed crowd of all ages energetically rooted and howled until Thomas Mars and crew took their place on stage and launched into “Entertainment.” Appropriately opening with the lead track off their forthcoming Bankrupt! album, fans began to get into the upbeat swing of things and started to dance around without a care in the world.

Playing mostly all their hits from Bankrupt! and Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, combined with even older tracks from 2006′s It’s Never Been Like That, Phoenix knows how to get a crowd moving with excitement, screaming the lyrics and dancing like their lives depended on it.

After over an hour of rocking out, the band left the stage only to return moments later with a softer stage presence. Mars took this as an opportunity to get on the same level as the audience and jumped into the crowd with an minimally driven version of “Countdown.” When the rest of the band emptied the stage, Mars grabbed his mic and headed to the opposite side of the room only to jump back into the sea of people and crowd-surf his way back to the stage.

Even though they’ve taken a long vacation from touring, it’s clear that these guys have hit their stride once again and are continuously proving to us why they’re still one of the best bands around. Cheers to you, Phoenix.

The Belligerents – Ghost VS

The Belligerents were one of those bands that, at the young and impressionable age of 17, I probably would have followed to the ends of the earth. Armed with a fake ID, an obsessive love for live music, and a wildly unrealistic crush on their guitarist, I’m fairly certain I didn’t miss a single one of their shows over the course of about 18 months. Bless.

Three years late, and while I still look about 17, I like to think that my taste and understanding of what makes a good band — besides attractive band members — has matured somewhat. So, too, have The Belligerents grown up in some respect, with astonishing and refreshing clarity in their writing and lyrical content and truly immaculate production, all of which have evolved and been fine-tuned over the last few years.

Their latest single, “Ghost VS,” shows a darker side to the Brisbane indie-dance outfit, with frontman Lewis Stephenson’s haunting vocals enveloped in a delicious electronic track that builds perfectly and necessitates an immediate replay. Or ten.

Enerate – Unstoppable

What's so good?

I haven’t reviewed a good indie pop song for some time now, so I was really pleased to have this track from Sydney band Enerate sent my way. The four-piece have just released their first official single, “Unstoppable,” and are due to release an album, Good Times Airlines, later on this year.

“Unstoppable” was actually released as a demo over a year ago, but it’s been re-fashioned into what you’re hearing now. This is really catchy stuff, but it’s got some depth to it, too. From the falsetto vocals, to the carefully positioned synth-lines, to the 80s video game-esque bridge, it’s perfectly put together.

Having listened to some of their older work, this is a band that has come a long way in a short time. There’s plenty of promise here.

What tracks have Maribou State touched that haven’t come out twenty times more delightful? None. The answer is none. If you aren’t already fixed on Maribou State, one listen to their remix of George Maple’s “Fixed” will snag you for sure.

In a previous post, I described their music as “silky house thumpers.” Fellow writer Anu described them as “gorgeous” and Indie’s own Jason Grishkoff has said, ”they’ve knocked it out of the park for song, after song, after song” — I think we can safely tag another “song” on to that one, Jason. See, I didn’t want to accidentally repeat myself, because Maribou is still all those things! So I’ve just straight up shamelessly quoted us to emphasize how much we love them here at Indie Shuffle.

It was Maribou State that prompted me to use the world “yearning,” and sure I’ve never used that word ever, in reference to anything else, so that’s got to say something!

If you’re listening at all to this London duo you will yearn for their next release. Trust me, you will, and if you’re listening right now to “Fixed” and “yearn” doesn’t suddenly creep into your vocabulary, well, then you’re not really listening.

Of course I’m right on top of Kidnap Kid — I’m straight obsessed. He can do no wrong in my eyes, and I would probably never recognize it if he did! But… he doesn’t and he won’t… so let’s move on to the more important matter of talking about how awesome he is.

Kidnap is coming in hard with his latest Rudimental remix, “Waiting All Night.” It’s as solid as it is sparse, with a sort of take-on-the-world attitude. He’s stripped away the crazed break-beat of the original and gets straight to the point.

The lyrics ring out, “I’ve been waiting all night for you” and with Kidnap Kid’s heavy delivery one really gains a sense of urgency, frustration, longing, whatever… it’s all there, deep in the “less is more” philosophy of this stellar edit.

Since his last album, The Future Will Come, producer John MacLean seems he’s taken some time to reassess his style. Putting aside the unabashed, uber space-cadet dance chops, Maclean grinds “You Are My Destiny” down deep. There’s an almost dark tech house feel, yet the bright party vocals from Nancy Whang (formerly of LCD Soundsystem) expertly ease the tension.

“You Are My Destiny” drops in physical form via DFA on April 1, 2013, but if that means nothing to you, April 6 we can all pretend to hug a digital copy and muster up memories of personal connection.

From what I can gather, Melbourne native Julian Maverick seems to be a new talent on the scene, but he’s hardly a newbie.

The fuzzed out, tropical sounds of “Spaceships” beat on with confidence. In quality, Maverick’s production is polished and tight, building a solid atmosphere for his floating vocals. “Spaceships” is soothing, bright and prepped for summer.

Word has it that Maverick is working on an EP, and if this track gives any hint as to what we can expect, I have a feeling the music won’t disappoint.

Listening to Berlin’s Rooftop Runners is a great way to start your day. More specifically, listen to their single “Energize.”

As soon as I pressed play, I felt an ethereal flow that made for a perfect pick-me-up. This is the type of track that capitalizes on repetitiveness, but in a tasteful, innovative way. It’s an artistic expression (as most music is), but once you watch the video for “Energize” you’ll see that these brothers are much more than just musicians. These boys can DANCE.

I love the fluid characteristic of this song. It’s not jagged or chopped up into pieces. It’s very much a beautifully flowing artistic piece that shows multiple facets of how one can energize. Go ahead, shufflers, take your pick.

What should we be doing this weekend? I’d say we should be dancing, right? Pretty good advice from Bristol’s The Other Tribe, who are injecting their raucous energy into the coming weekend.

“We Should Be Dancing” is the latest single from the sextet and it feels awfully like it belongs at a tribal dance party. Much like their fellow countrymen Friendly Fires, this group of men have a knack of using their throbbing bass and hypnotic percussion to create a surreal and dangerous atmosphere. At the moment, they just seem to be releasing one single after another, but they do have an album in the works that should be released by the end of this year.

In my not-so-secret dream life, days are interspersed with seemingly spontaneous song-and-dance routines (yes, this and even this definitely had something to do with that. Uh, why didn’t that happen at MY prom?!).

Today’s dance break comes courtesy of New Politics, putting out some of the most fun good-time rock ‘n’ roll I’ve heard in a while. Their single, “Harlem,” is just begging you to get up and get down: “When it gets loud, I turn it up/Sh-sh-shake it like a bad girl up in Harlem!” A booming backbeat and enough raucous guitar works amp things up to full on party levels, never deviating its undeniably hooky sound.

Careful, too many listens will have you ready to start dancing on tables.

When I signaled this track was in my queue for review, my friend wrote to me about the dance potential of my ethnic heritage, “Can Arabs even feel the funk?” Incredulously, I wrote back, “What kind of question is that? Don’t you remember dancing in Beirut to the [albeit cheesy] Jad Choueiri track, “Funky Arabs“? That track brought down the club every time.” I mean, c’mon people, that question was settled for good in 2009.

And anyone who can’t feel the filthy funk flowing through them on this Aeroplane remix just ain’t got no rhythm. Aeroplane takes this Justin Timberlake track and amps up the smoothness straight out of the stratosphere. It’s so hot it singes the air around your speakers.

I wasn’t excited at all for that weak lyric tenor Justin Timberlake to reemerge into the scene, but if it inspires a few more remixes like this one, I might just be yelling “Hail, the return of JT” at the club this summer.

Work Drugs’s duo Tom Crystal and Ben Louisiana last appeared on Indie Shuffle with “Young Lungs“ back in December 2012. Now, they are about to set on short Midwest tour (check dates here) and to celebrate, they released a new track.

“Sunset on High Street” is a indie pop song with great keyboard work and nice saxophone play to create a smooth finish. This song is their first single off an untitled album due out sometime this summer.

According to the band, “The song was written about a homeless man named Milton Angland that we met on our last trip to Los Angeles. He shared with us stories of warm days on the fringe, the beauty of endless gridlock, the smell of a California summer breeze, the homeless community in L.A., revolution, and the people in Hollywood who gave him a chance.”

Around these parts, St. Lucia is better known for his reworkings on tracks from the likes of Passion Pit and Charli XCX, but today the tables have turned thanks to Scottish electro outfit CHVRCHES. You might recognize these guys from their massive hit “The Mother We Share,” but today they are demonstrating their re-mixology skills. And if you haven’t heard it yet, you need to ASAP.

This version of St. Lucia’s “Before the Dive” has been effectively chopped up, with added synths and distorted vocals, but ultimately maintains the vibrant feel of the original. Diving into an amalgamation of buoyant melodies that are recognizable to their aesthetic, CHVRCHES articulates their styles beautifully throughout St. Lucia’s productions. As far as we’re concerned, the combination is genius.

Holy Ghost! is a DJ duo from Brooklyn formed by Alex Frankel and Nick Millhiser. They are backed by a full live band for their tours and they are currently signed to DFA Records.

“It Gets Dark” is a sick electronic track full of bass. It was released over five months ago, so we’re a little late to this party! But take a moment to enjoy this track. According DFA records, “their next LP is coming out sometime in 2013.”

What's so good?

Cash Cash is an electro pop trio from Roseland, New Jersey. They caught my attention with their single “Party In Your Bedroom,” which was released over three years ago. Since then, they have evolved into making remixes as well originals in the electronic dance music scene.

They just released a remix of Capital Cities “Safe And Sound.” Cash Cash’s production on this remix is very solid, pushing the edges to make it hip for new audiences. The track will eventually be part of Capital Cities’ Safe and Sound Remix EP, which is set to be released sometime in the near future.
