Pigeon are a Brisbane-based group still in the early stages of their assault on the Australian indie pop scene. The five-piece released their debut EP Fortunes last year, drawing plenty of attention and prized support slots for the likes of Van She and Strange Talk.

The EP’s second single, “Encounters,” was perfectly designed to be remixed, and that’s exactly what Melbourne based DJ/producer Airwolf has done. Already known for his disco-infused mixes, Airwolf has done a solid job with this one. He hasn’t altered it too drastically, but has definitely added to the pop anthem by speeding it up and giving it his renowned disco signature. And of course, the epic sax solo towards the end doesn’t hurt.

This is a track I should have featured last year, so thanks Airwolf for giving me a fresh opportunity to give this one a shout-out.

We haven’t heard much from Young Empires since their debut EP Wake All My Youth  back in 2011, so I was pleasantly surprised to hear that they were releasing a US version of the EP. Not that there are any new tracks on it, but there is certainly one noticeable remix of the massive ballad “White Doves” created by fellow Torontonians Natural Animal.

If you’ve heard the original, then you’ll absolutely love what the duo have recreated with this remix. What was originally a slow uplifting ballad has now become a dance floor friendly summer hit. Adding some bouncy synths, ample amounts of groove, and a club friendly beat is always a recipe for success.

They’re offering a free download of the full extended mix via their Facebook page at the moment, so grab it while you can!

I’m always nervous about Ben Howard remixes: the guy’s such a master class musician, crafting intimate worlds that seem almost sinful to disrupt. Indeed, about two minutes into this remix of “Bones,” Aarden hits such a magical stride it ameliorated my fears.

Even though his decision to focus on and reprise the chorus had me reticent at first (the first stanza is my favorite part of the track), it turns out to be a smart one:

“Oh you laugh like you’ve never been lonely.
Oh you laugh like there’s hope in this story…”

Much of that has to do with Aarden’s adept amplification of the song’s emotional core through his serene synth work. The track in its original form is sweetly acid-tongued, serving as an ode to relationship that ends because of the broken nature of Howard’s lover–a person that has an inability to commit.

Howard finds that trait to be an endearing quality, and Aarden’s remix hones in on that sentiment, providing it warmth to nestle inside. That kind of ear is always something I look for in remixers, and Aarden has it in spades.

Cold War Kids’”Miracle Mile“ is one of my favorite tracks this year. A jangly, chamber pop experience replete with inspirational lyrics that soar you to the moon and back? Oh, yes please, and don’t stop filling my plate with that tasty, soul satiation.

Unfortunately, it was really difficult to fit that kind of exuberance in a playlist, save outside some kind of punctuating last bit of flair. Which, to me, always felt unfair to the song’s meaty message. Enter Houses to tackle the task of smoothing down the track with an R&B vibe that never dilutes its message.

Houses slows down the tempo and belies it with some tasteful snare and handclaps to keep up the song’s momentum. But their greatest touch is the addition of some synthy goodness which makes every re-entry from the chorus into the verses feel like coming up for air into a new life.

It’s just another example of Houses’ great track record in the last year. Check out more on their SoundCloud.

It’s been almost four years now since The Temper Trap released “Sweet Disposition,” and it still has got to be one of my favorite tracks. I could go on an about The Temper Trap, but today it’s all about the young bucks from New Zealand, The Odd Chaps, who have shared a superb remix of “Sweet Disposition.”

The great thing about this remix is that it doesn’t contort the song too much from its original state, yet it offers a slightly refined electronic sound that is super chill and easily likable.  One also might notice that the beat sounds very similar to the intro of Skrillex’s remix of Benny Benassi’s “Cinema.”  It’s a reach, but it’s the first thing that came to mind.

At any rate, the 16- and 17-year-old duo have a bright future for themselves in the electronic scene.  Head over to their SoundCloud page for a free download and more tunes.

Birmingham indie rockers Swim Deep have a lot to be excited for in the next coming months. Their debut album is being produced by Charlie Hugall (the man behind Florence + the Machine’s Lungs album) and their newest single “The Sea” is set for release on March 4, 2013.

To set things off in a positive direction, Manchester-based producer Nudist has taken to the unreleased single and has added some livelier pops and bubbles into the mix. This version takes to the original’s alternative nature, but ultimately sounds like something completely different. I’m not saying that the original isn’t interesting, but when set parallel to this mix, I’m in favor of the latter.

Back in November, RAC released his first ever full-length album, made up of 20 of his best remixes. We’d pretty much covered every single one on Indie Shuffle already.  At least, that’s what I thought…

Turns out this remix of Tegan & Sara’s “Back In Your Head” totally passed us by. And that’s a shame, because it’s pretty darn catchy — in my opinion, far more so than the new content that the female duo have been releasing.

Feel free to disagree with me, but this might just highlight the peak of Tegan & Sara’s career.

Back in November, RAC released his first ever full-length album, made up of 20 of his best remixes. We’d pretty much covered every single one on Indie Shuffle already.  At least, that’s what I thought…

Turns out this remix of Tegan & Sara’s “Back In Your Head” totally passed us by. And that’s a shame, because it’s pretty darn catchy — in my opinion, far more so than the new content that the female duo have been releasing.

Feel free to disagree with me, but this might just highlight the peak of Tegan & Sara’s career.

In 2012, Trails And Ways dropped a number of excellent covers and original tracks, from the distinctive “Nunca” to a beautiful version of Miguel’s “Sure Thing.” It should be unsurprising then, that they’ve dropped an 8-track remix EP entitled  Detornar-se before even releasing a debut album (which we can expect later this year).

The title of their EP means “to unmake” in Portuguese. This makes quite a bit of sense, not only for their album, but also because sometimes an artist has to deconstruct before creating their next successful piece. In this case, it’s other musicians who organically did the un-making, yet the collection still allows us to see highlighted moments of their original intent along with endless possibilities for future sound.

I would call Wallpaper.’s remix of “Mtn Tune” bossanova dream dance; it’s like if future garage decided to originate from Brazil, and met indie pop and EDM at an awesome house party.. . or something like that.  Just listen! Sounds like: Sound of Arrows, White Arrows, Polaris at Noon

Swaying with a Sound of Arrows-esque swagger in the intro notes is always a way to hook me right into your track, and Noah Hyde’s new remix for M.A.U.’s “Cheetah” does that in spades.  This was a smart choice for Hyde, though, in another way: by being evocative of the soaring in optimism in “There is Still Hope“ he gets to play up and accentuate the internal tensions of the original track.

Hyde’s rework of the synths makes the song feel like a dreamy argument with yourself after you’ve awakened from a near mortal wound. You’re bleeding out, “licking your own wounds,” and feel like nothing but a bag of bones; but still, you both try and cajole yourself out of doom and chastise yourself for believing there was anything outside of it.

A lot of this fascinating tension comes from Hyde’s choice to play up the 80s-like synths and “ooh ooh” bridge vocals throughout the whole song. Whereas the “ooh ooh” was found at the end of M.A.U.’s original track, by placing it at the beginning it acts like a self-soothing chant, like humming to yourself and rubbing your thumb on your inner palm as chaos spins around you.

Both of these methods allow the future/past struggle inherent in the song simmer at once forebodingly and nostalgic. The bridge vocals and synths recall the heady (but unsustainable) economic days of the Reagan era, while the vocals ground us in the quagmire of the present. How will the hero of the track survive? How will we survive? Even if we don’t, this song can at least soundtrack our epic journey to stay hopeful in the current economic depression.

So I’ve heard a few remixes for Passion Pit’s “Carried Away,” but Maestro’s electro infused remix is undoubtedly one of the best ones that I have come across. Maestro is, well… a MAESTRO, har har. Jokes aside, he is a 21-year-old producer from the glacier caves of Iceland, and he only has a few tracks out at the moment. By the looks of things, he has only begun producing and remixing just this year.

So let’s talk about this remix, shall we? The Icelander has managed to turn Passion Pit’s already positively effervescent song into a electro-funk dance party! Don’t be fooled by the mild introduction — this song explodes into life. I’m loving the way that this Maestro remix has jump-started my day. It’s thoroughly upbeat, all while maintaining an unoffensive nature.

Not to put pressure on the guy, but I’m expecting more awesome remixes from him!

Many of us have already fallen under the spell of the sisters Haim. Their saucy vocals combined with a solid folk-pop backdrop leave fans in a state of illusion, hankering for more.

While it comes as no surprise that producers have taken the time to add the remix treatment to some of their tracks, one that has stood out among the rest is by one of our favorite remix artists of the moment, Cyril Hahn.

This version of “Don’t Save Me” is taken up a couple notches to a livelier place, where eighties fluorescents, soaring electronics and ladies night intermingle. You might think that Cyril’s signature flow is preoccupied with the upbeat nature of the track, but as many producers have shown us, grandeur lies within their collection of diversity.

Working alongside David Byrne has been a dream for many artists. From Talking Heads all the way to his solo work, the dude has time and time again come out with music that so different and otherworldly that sometimes I feel like he might in fact come from another planet.

Although not many artists can have the opportunity of collaboration the way that St. Vincent has, the next best thing would be to take a stab from the remix side of things. That being said, we have a special treat for your Byrne-ing desires, brought to us by San Francisco-based mixmaster Viceroy.

This fresh take on the classic Talking Heads track “This Must Be The Place” ups the original a couple notches, adding more danceable beats into the mix. Don’t worry though; this version stays faithful to the original for the most part, while still giving it that tropical infusion that many of us are currently vibing on.

For any Drive fans out there (yes, I’m referring to that Ryan Gosling flick), you are more than likely also a fan of Kavinsky’s “Nightcall,” and therefore I will assume you that you will enjoy this track. Active Child (Pat Grossi), heavily relies on his spectacular vocal charm accented by the ever-so-present shimmering harp lines present within “Hanging On.”

Off of his newest album titled You Are All I See, “Hanging On” has been reinvigorated by Brooklyn producers GRVRBBRS. The two aimlessly venture even further onto the dark side of electronic music territory, but still are able to stay true to Grossi’s aesthetic. Also known as Graverobbers, the duo refresh and transport the piece to a destination of musical luminosity. The tempo is now dancier with an 80s, nu disco vibe, accompanied by the twang of Active Child’s signature synth.

Blurring the lines between disco, tech, electronic and folk-infused indie-pop, the marriage of Active Child and GRVRBBRS has produced quite the lovechild.

Contrary to popular belief Emil & Friends is comprised of one 23-year old: a production-wizard/musician named Emil Hewitt. He’s a New Yorker and has just released his latest EP, Royal Oats, under the Kitsune Maison label. Along with that, we got some pretty neat little remixes of the lead single “Royal Oats,” my favorite being this one by Radial.

Not too sure who this Radial person is, but the fact remains that this is such an uplifting remix. It kicks things up and notch with an added beat and some extra funky electric keyboard synths, which is exactly what the doctor ordered for the original. There’s no doubt that Radial has some serious talent, it kind of reminds me of a remix that RAC would produce.

For those New Yorkers out there, I hope this puts a smile on your face.

When he sent over this track, Christian Strobe was quick to point out that he’d aimed for a totally laid-back disco vibe. Sure enough, his remix of Feist’s “Bittersweet Melodies” is ripe for a relaxing summer day by the pool.

Off Feist’s hugely successful 2011 album Metals, the original track is a mid-album slow jam that basically makes me want to curl up in a ball and cry. So, props to Mr. Strobe. He’s made this one fun to listen to!

The Knocks have just released a fun little remix of Santigold’s “The Keepers.” While their press release challenges listeners to refrain from dancing, I find that this track is pretty much too hard to resist.

“The Keepers” comes off Santigold’s very recently released album Master of My Make-Believe, an album that managed to hit #1 on the US Dance charts. Arguably The Knocks didn’t have to try too hard to make this one infectiously groovy…but in this case I’ll concede: they’ve done an awesome job here.

The Knocks have just released a fun little remix of Santigold’s “The Keepers.” While their press release challenges listeners to refrain from dancing, I find that this track is pretty much too hard to resist.

“The Keepers” comes off Santigold’s very recently released album Master of My Make-Believe, an album that managed to hit #1 on the US Dance charts. Arguably The Knocks didn’t have to try too hard to make this one infectiously groovy…but in this case I’ll concede: they’ve done an awesome job here.

Well, we all know Foster the People have absolutely killed it in terms of recognition. At this point, there’s a good chance you’ll hear them stepping into a Starbucks or Best Buy. And Urban Outfitters / American Apparel are absolute shoe-ins. Basically, they’ve gone full on pop.

Fortunately they’re still indie enough (what is indie, anyway?) for us to cover them here — particularly when you’ve got a fine remix such as this one by Treasure Fingers. Rather than completely dissect the track, the Fool’s Gold artist has opted to tweak the drums and add a bit of synth work. Overall, the Foster the People you know and love is still kept whole — probably owing to the success of this remix.

Feist’s latest album Metals was a beautiful escapade through folk landscapes. Many of the tracks themselves were slow and measured, including “How Come You Never Go There.” That created the perfect opportunity for remix artists to step in and pick up the pace.

Brand new RAC remix of Noah and the Whale’s “Tonight’s the Kind of Knight” just released on Soundcloud. The song is the second single off the band’s third album Last Night on Earth, released on March 7, 2011. The album features backing vocals by Jen Turner from Here We Go Magic, and gospel vocals by the legendary Waters Sisters, who famously provided backing vocals for Michael Jackson’s “Wanna Be Starting Something.”

Per the majority of remixes released by RAC, this one has a happy bounce to it, carrying Charlie Fink’s normally sentimental baritone in a somewhat unfamiliar but enjoyable manner.
