I’m really excited to present this new track by Decent Lovers. Their sound is infectious; their style fresh. “Collided” is the perfect example.

One of my favorite instruments, the kalimba, is the shining star in this track. An often overlooked instrument, the kalimba yields a pleasant yet off-kilter effect. There’s a low-key tropicana feel to this song, but at the same time, I hear tinges of underground hip-hop here and there as well. The overall composition of “Collided”  is unique, to say the least. With the combination of an ethnic instrument and modern-day drum machine, the track is definitely interesting, and I’d say that Decent Lovers nailed it!

Decent Lovers’ fearlessness within their music-making only leaves me wanting more. I can’t wait to hear what they come up with next!

You may know Balthazar Getty as an actor, but what you wouldn’t know is that his real passion is music. Getty’s fascination for producing and mixing started in his late teens, and he finally decided to put his musical ambition in high gear.

So, he created his own label, PURPLEHAUS, and armed with just a Pro Tools rig, his DIY debut album SOLARDRIVE was birthed in three weeks. He recorded/produced/co-wrote the self titled album with the help of friends like Kevin Hicks, Ozomatli, vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Asdru Sierra, Mother Tongue bassist David Gould, and Rain Phoenix (Joaquin’s sister). He said, “Like it’s my time, in a way, and I want to share what I’m doing with like-minded people,” when asked about branching out in music.

SOLARDRIVE was created with the dream that you can bring all different types of creative angles together to shape a new sound. There are eight songs that pay homage to Getty’s love for different musical sounds that he grew up loving: 90s NYC rap, electronica, and nitty gritty blues.

The first single, ” No Drama,” features his childhood friend Kevin Hicks rapping. Even though the song is short and sweet at just under two minutes, it makes you want to keep on listening/repeating. The full album drops April 23; go get yourself some rad SOLARDRIVE tunes, because you will be rocked.

I know Philip, our contributor from Albuquerque, NM, posted a Skizzy track recently, but since Phases was bumping in any speakers I could get my paws on this past weekend, I felt compelled to provide my humble opinion on this stellar project.

Skizzy Mars, aka Myles Mills, has gone from Union College campus rapping scrapper to buzzworthy, nationwide touring MC in a very short span of time. As that dude Casey Veggies would say, “Life Changes.”

Well, life sounds like it’s constantly changing for Skiz the Rapper. From rhyming braggadocious (on “What Up Girl”), to auto-tune serenading (on “Cheer Up”), to raps about dealing with anxiety and substance abuse (on “The Come Down”), Skizzy finds plenty of ways to relate to the young adults of this colorful generation in his newest project.

Here we showcase “Delusional,” featuring Sterling Fox on the hook, which is one of the more uptempo tracks on the tape. Along with this track (and the songs mentioned above), make sure to check out the proper way one goes in over an indie rock beat, as he does Beirut’s “The Concubine” right on “Nostalgia (Interlude).”

Skizzy need not fret leaving college life behind, as we’ve seen him mention before. He’s got a knack for this rapping thing, and Phases is a nice listen. Frankly, I’m glad he’s out here rhyming rather than doing keg-stands, hitting chem class, and chirping co-eds in Schenectady, NY.

Also, he’s has been on the road with G-Eazy the past few months, and will be teaming up with Logic this spring for shows scattering the U.S. Follow him here.

New York Emcee Skizzy Mars has been known for his love of indie rock, getting his start rapping over tracks by artists like Beirut and Crystal Castles — much like his contemporary, Childish Gambino.  Thankfully, the worlds of hip-hop and indie rock continue to cross over with Mars’ new track “Phases” — a collaborative effort put together with Dallas indie singer-songwriter up and comer Conner Youngblood.

Off of Skizzy Mars’ mixtape debut of the same-name, “Phases” starts off with some toy piano and Youngblood’s questioning chorus.  As the beat drops, Mars goes on talking about mistakes his made in his life, reflecting on all his been through, and how it’s matured him. Youngblood’s signature banjo also makes an appearance towards the very end, fitting in perfectly with hip-hop and piano infused beat.

While New York and Dallas are pretty far off geographically and culturally, Skizzy Mars and Conner Youngblood show how exciting life is when two different worlds meet.  Go get Skizzy Mars’ new mixtape right here, and let him expand your world.

When the homie Scoop DeVille told me he was working on a ‘different’ project with multimedia artist Michael Sterling Eaton under the moniker Watercolor Werewolf, I was puzzled to say the least. I was used to Scoop providing the backbone for bangers like “The Recipe” and “Poetic Justice.” Something ‘different’ sounded like it could potentially be less than stellar for someone with a track record that had been just that.

Well, I was in for a surprise. When Scoop and Michael debuted the first taste of WW I was immediately thrown for a loop. I heard sounds that reminded me of David Bowie and Bauhaus, but with a distinct hip-hop foundation. Here’s what the dynamic duo has to say about their curiously titled collaborative endeavor:

Watercolor Werewolf is the collaboration between super-producer/artist Scoop Deville and world famous multi-media artist/producer/creative director Michael Sterling Eaton. The two have brought together their unique backgrounds to create modern abstract art through music. Taking cues equally from Devo, Talking Heads and Bauhaus as well as hip-hop and dance music, Watercolor Werewolf is an ode to 80′s art school rock, especially its method of creativity. “Our philosophy is to be more like abstract painters when we create music.” says Eaton. “We’re less worried about making hits with contemporary pop structure, than we are about emotional response to the sounds.” Presented more as a traditional rock group, the songs here were recorded live in the Neonostalgia Studio, deep in the snow capped mountains of Southern California. So, the process was uncompromised by the typical multi-track sessions lending an instinctive feel. “Almost 100% of our music was done in one take, not just with the vocals but the entire song.” says Deville. “Allowing the raw essence of our collaboration to shine through.”

When the homie Scoop DeVille told me he was working on a ‘different’ project with multimedia artist Michael Sterling Eaton under the moniker Watercolor Werewolf, I was puzzled to say the least. I was used to Scoop providing the backbone for bangers like “The Recipe” and “Poetic Justice.” Something ‘different’ sounded like it could potentially be less than stellar for someone with a track record that had been just that.

I wish nothing but the best for Johnny Astro. I’ve known the Dallas emcee/producer for a minute now, and it seems with every track I learn a little bit more about the man behind the talent. In honor of their recent induction to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, ?uestlove released a mix of hand-picked, highly recognized Beastie Boys tracks that we all know and love to yell in our best New Yawk accents. Word is that The Roots drummer submitted the mix to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame staff, and decided to release the mix in remembrance of the late Adam Yauch’s birthday.

The mix features classics such as “The New Style,” “Sabotage,” and “No Sleep Til Brooklyn,” with reworked beat productions and ?uestlove’s high-pitched, chuckle-worthy vocals.

In reference to the mix, ?uestlove sheds some light on what it is we are actually listening to:

“What you are listening to was a quickie lunch break demo I had to put together for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame staff (basically the heads of Rolling Stone) and the Beastie Boys and the gazillion prospects of guests who were approached to be part of the performance. Which means I had to lay out a very thorough map: i took the characteristics of the 3 Beasts and arranged the songs that i felt best fit them (keeping their demand that “Fight For Your Right” have NOTHING to do with their moment in the sun. I begged all 20 parties involved to lemme create something THEN start nitpicking if its not satisfactory. In my head i wanted to include ALL fan highlights…it was lost in the mix of a gazillion magical mp3s I had so I figured it was apropos to whip this baby out in honor of the late great Yauch’s bday passing this week. I think its kinda funny.

The remix is the 5th in Viceroy’s series of Jet Life remixes, which have so far featured Biggie, Wiz Khalifa and Mark Morrison. We haven’t actually covered any of them…but I just couldn’t resist this time.

This could just about be music’s hottest couple right now. Not more than a couple days after releasing a “National Anthem” teaser music video that had A$AP Rocky playing the part of JFK and Lana as Jackie, the duo have now released a single titled “Ridin’.”

Technically, it’s a single that was supposed to be released by The Kickdrums on their mixtape, but clearly the talk is all about the pair. So much so that the track might make an appearance on A$AP’s upcoming album Long.Live.A$AP. Frankly, I can’t blame him. This song is money!

Urban Noize represent some of what I like most about music these days. Twin brothers Steve and Steven pair mainstream urban artists (Kanye West, Wiz Khalifa, Jay-Z, etc.) with eclectic, typically progressive productions that melt like some magical indie-rap pill on your ears’ mouth.

“Forever West,” pairs Ye’s verse from “Forever” with a sample of Vega Choir‘s cover of Radiohead‘s “Creep.” It’s a rad tune, simultaneously eloquent and unrefined. This is the second single off of the brothers’ forthcoming Mr. West.

Also, be sure to check out B.C.L., Urban Noize’s other Yeezy remix project, easily one of the best tapes to drop last year.

While snooping around for tracks to post from that album, I stumbled upon his rendition of Two Door Cinema Club’s “Words of Wisdom,” off Pep Rally. While he’s definitely come a long way on his more recent work, there’s a certain draw to this one that I couldn’t resist.
