I’ve covered Cull before — you know, those Australian rockers that sounded like if Tame Impala was finally able to chill and bliss the fuck out? (see: “I Thought We Was“ and “Good People Disappear.”) But this time they’ve really outdone themselves. This ain’t no ordinary dual single release, “Canker/If It Works” feels like the start of something much bigger than the band.

When I think of Australian rock, I see a genre looking way out and jumping across two ponds to a Eurocentric understanding of itself. But Australia isn’t Europe, and the more its music tries to emulate that scene, the more it will always be viewed as some kind of anomaly. I’ve always wondered what would happen if their music scene — much like what they are doing with their political identity — embraced their Asianness.

And that’s what “If It Works” does so damn well. Incorporating diversity of instrumentation like traditional oriental synths, mixed with vocal stylings that a band like From The Airport might take to the Seoul scene, “If It Works” looks out at the Indian Ocean with the same fierce determination that the cover art drawing has.

With “Canker/If It Works,” Cull shows they are ready to rumble as an inventive force of regional rock: eye markings, sweaty practices, and mind blowing tunes included.

Every aspect of this weekend’s Hangout Music Festival in Gulf Shores, Alabama promises to deliver. Now in its fourth year, the fest boasts an impressive lineup featuring legends Tom Petty and Stevie Wonder headlining alongside Kings of Leon.

With all-you-could-ask-for amenities, including pools at the main stage and hammocks lining rows of palm trees, coupled with forecasts calling for sunny skies and highs in the upper 70s, it’s slated to be a perfect weekend.

Though general admission 3-day passes are now sold out, a few single day tickets remain. Also, if you can’t make it to Hangout’s sandy shores, MTV will be streaming the fest online.

Sunday, Hangout Stage 8:30PM-11:00PM Stevie Wonder shows always elicit a special feeling. A mix of nostalgia and presence, in which this ever optimistic soul leads an endless crowd on an intimate musical journey. I have never seen music fans happier than at a Stevie Wonder show. One of the greatest sustained careers in music, his influence on soul, pop, R&B, and funk are far reaching, making him a perfect pick to close out such a momentous bill.

Sunday, Hangout Stage 5:15PM-6:30PM The avant-garde New York City rockers may have relaxed a bit on their newest album Mosquito, but their live show promises to keep a vigorous pace. Karen O is known as one of indie’s best frontwomen for her exuberant festival performances and riveting chemistry with guitarist Nick Zinner.

Sunday, Hangout Stage 8:45PM-11:00PM Tom. Petty. Rocks. A member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, his resume is practically an encyclopedia of rock. The man’s been fronting the Heartbreakers for 37 years now! With The Traveling Wilburys, Petty’s face was chiseled on the mount Rushmore of super-groups alongside Bob Dylan, George Harrison, and Roy Orbison. For one of their first shows on their return to the road, they’ve chosen a spot not too far from their Gainesville, Florida home, so expect a myriad of Petty die-hards, but isn’t that obvious when that includes just about everyone?

Saturday, Chevrolet Stage 4:45PM-6:00PM The hardest working band in late night may just be the hardest working band. Exuding constant energy, Black Thought, Tuba Gooding Jr., ?uestlove and the rest of the gang still manage to find time between their Late Night with Jimmy Fallon musical duties to maintain a steady touring schedule on the weekend festival circuit. With sets relying heavily on 2010′s How I Got Over and 2011′s Undun, the band has featured an excellent cover of Beastie Boy’s “Paul Revere” in the past year, in honor of the late Adam “MCA” Yauch.

Saturday, Boom Boom Tent 1:30PM-2:30PM One of this year’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees, Chuck D, Flavor Flav and Professor Griff will hold down the Boom Boom Tent during the early 1:30PM slot. A precursor to the likes of Run-D.M.C. and Beastie Boys, Public Enemy played a formative role in hip-hop and have been active for over 30 years. 1988′s It Takes A Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back is considered one of the most influential albums of all time, and is the highest ranking hip hop album on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, so successful it was able to propel Flavor Flav into a whole series of reality shows on VH1.

Friday, Hangout Stage 9:00PM-11:00PM Last time we heard from America’s band they appeared on the verge of implosion. Canceling the remainder of their last U.S. tour and going on hiatus after lead singer Caleb Followill’s rambling on-stage meltdown, or perhaps as drummer Nathan explained it directly to his brother Caleb in the documentary Talihina Sky: “You don’t realize – you get drunk and you talk shit to everybody who makes you who you are. You’re a piece of shit and your band cannot fucking stand you! I sing every goddamn song for you because your little pussy-ass voice gets hoarse! Fuck you! We have made you.”

Considering that, it was welcome news to hear the band would return, beginning work on their follow-up to 2011′s Come Around Sundown. Their first show back at last week’s Bottle Rock Napa Valley saw them trot out a new tune titled “It Don’t Matter,” assumedly off their yet unnamed, though finished sixth album. With a potential September release date, the sound has been described by Nathan in NME as a mix of Youth & Young Manhood and Because Of The Times.

Friday, Chevrolet Stage 7:30PM-9:00PM Although we’ll miss the addition of guitarist Jessica Dobson (now fronting her own band Deep Sea Diver), James Mercer’s current iteration of The Shins is still one of the most enjoyable acts in indie-rock. Continuing to tour behind the strength of last year’s stellar Port Of Morrow, this will be the perfect show to take it all in during sunset.

Friday, Chevrolet Stage 5:00PM-6:15PM On last year’s spiraling triumph, Shields, Ed Droste’s band’s fourth studio album still saw them eluding commercial success in favor of unapologetic detail. While their songs may not be so radio-ready, their albums are precise masterpieces built to reward a careful listener, making them another ideal band for reflection on the beachfront.

Friday, Hangout Stage 3:45PM-5:00PM James’ soulful new album, Regions of Light and Sound, is prime for this beach setting. On tour to promote his solo debut, he’s assembled a backing band consisting of Dave Givan on drums, Dan Dorf on keyboards, Alana Rocklin on bass, and Kevin Ratterman on percussion. Recently playing saxophone during “A New Life” and peppering in tunes from both My Morning Jacket and Monsters of Folk during extended solo encores, this early afternoon set promises to be a crowd pleasing start to the weekend.

Much has been written about Savages’ post-punk aesthetic and commitment to the long-forgotten principles of complete sonic immersion. Putting aside the fact that the band members would prefer not to gaze out at a sea of iPhones and cameras while they’re performing, the some questions remain: Are they any good? Does their music live up to their ideology and aesthetic?

Refreshingly, the answer is a resounding yes. Debut LP Silence Yourself is a jagged slice of ballsy post-punk with just enough of a modern touch to make them more than a retro throwback. The band’s sound is for the most part studiously spare, with just enough syncopated beats, driving bass and artfully placed shards of noisy guitar to complement singer Jehnny Beth’s nuanced vocal performance.

Although every band member contributes something essential to the mix, Beth is the highlight. On lead single “Husbands,” she demonstrates considerable versatility, communicating as much with a foreboding whisper as a bracing shriek. The chorus, if you can call it that, encapsulates Savages’ songwriting approach quite well, conveying an amalgam of conflicting emotions in a minimalist fashion. You can feel Beth straining against the shackles of heteronormativity (for all of you gender studies majors out there) with every repetition of the song’s title.

Yet, there is also an accompanying sense of fear and vulnerability. The song’s protagonist is not simply dismissing a cultural institution out of rebelliousness or apathy. She seems to be wrestling with a real emotional dilemma, one that is growing increasingly common in a time where some of feminism’s core ideals about independence are coming into conflict with the allure of a traditional family structure.

In this way, Savages transcend the often bloodless sloganeering prominent among Riot Grrl bands that addressed similar subject matter with less nuance. While it would be reductive to draw blanket conclusions about a subject as complex and multifaceted as feminism from one song, Jehnny Beth’s lyrics, and those of similarly-minded bands, seem to suggest that feminist musicians have grown sufficiently comfortable in their own skin to admit that, decades after second-wave feminism transformed the way we think about gender roles, the question of how to reconcile some of its core doctrines with the potential benefits and trappings of a traditional relationship is a highly individual affair that no theoretical doctrine can entirely address.

A couple months back it was announced that The Dodos were working on a new album. They were one of my favorite bands in 2008, so understandably I was quite excited to hear what was in store.

“Confidence” is the first new single off the band’s upcoming album Carrier, out on August 27th. The album will be their fifth to date, following up 2011′s No Color.

For those of you familiar with The Dodos, you’ll no doubt notice that “Confidence” stays true to the sound established by the trio in albums past. In doing so, it leaves me at a middle ground: there’s obviously nothing amazingly evolutionary here to get me excited, but it’s quite nice to hear something from a band I’ve grown to like over the last few years.

Kiwi band Ghost Wave have already made a couple trips to the United States (including a few appearances at this year’s SXSW), but today will be the first day that we actually feature their music on Indie Shuffle. And what better way to do it than with a premiere of a fun surf rock track?

“Here She Comes” is their first single off an upcoming LP titled Ages, to be released sometime mid-summer via Arch Hill/Flying Nun Records. Over the course of its 3 minutes and 23 seconds, the Auckland-based quartet layer laid-back and nonchalant vocals over jangly guitars and an upbeat bassline. Supported by a boisterous drumbeat, Ghost Wave have successfully managed to win me over with this song.

Sounds like: Modest Mouse, Guided By Voices, Pavement

What is it that leads to some bands flaming out, while others are able to continue on for decades?  I recently had the chance to see a band that falls in the latter category, and in doing so learned what it takes to keep the indie rock flame alive.

From the beginning of the show at Albuquerque’s Launchpad, it was clear that Doug Martsch has kept Built To Spill going for all these years.  From their Idaho start way back in 1993, Martsch has been the driving force behind Built To Spill, and he continues to lead the band with his laser like focus and intensity during the show.

All of what has made Built To Spill a great indie rock behind was on full display throughout the evening, with Martsch’s witty lyrics, plenty of guitar heroics, and a band that proves that experience leads to a super tight sound.  Martsch was the conductor as they effortlessly switched gears from song-to-song, playing tunes inspired by jam-band, indie rock, and even metal.  Not unlike an out-of-control train, they somehow managed to stay on the tracks and just continue to build speed as they played through their set.

The highlight of the show came at the encore when the band played a rocking cover of “(D0n’t Fear) The Reaper” by Blue Öyster Cult. They nailed the song note for note — no simple task, as all you classic rock aficionados know. Their cover was complete with a little help from the frontman of Junior Rocket Scientist (the opening band) supplying just the right amount of cowbell.

They then closed out with two classic tracks, “Big Dipper” off of There’s Nothing Wrong With Love and “Joyride” off of The Normal Years.  I felt like I was back in the hey-day of indie rock, dancing and singing along with a couple hundred of my closest friends.

Built to Spill proved that they’ve still got it after all these years, and that they don’t plan on slowing down anytime soon.  And for all of your European shufflers, the band will be starting an international tour starting in September in Madrid.  You can check out all of their tour dates here.

Nestled in the middle of wine country, Bottle Rock Napa Valley was an incredible music festival, with good food, wine, and a high-caliber lineup. Since this was the first time the festival has taken place, there were a few logistical mishaps here and there, but no real complaints. All in all, I’d say this was the perfect way to kick off the summer music festival season!

Unfortunately, I was only able to attend Friday. We kicked off the day with some delicious ribs from the Cochon Volant BBQ truck, the folk rock of Allah Las playing in the background. We continued to eat our way through the festival — you can see an awesome round-up of the delicious food on Serious Eats if you’re interested (warning: do not click if hungry). The rest of the day was filled with wine in a bag (it’s like a juice box for adults) and the likes of Dirty Projectors, Alabama Shakes, The Flaming Lips, The Shins (they were AMAZING) and The Black Keys. I snuck peeks at Justin Townes Earle, Andrew Bird, and the other awesome acts playing that day (outlined here in this festival preview), but The Shins and The Black Keys were the true stars of the show.

Since I wasn’t able to bring you a recap of Saturday and Sunday’s show, I figured I’d highlight the acts that played in the playlist below. Enjoy, and definitely be sure to buy a ticket for next year’s festival!

London’s own Shy Nature are gearing up to release their introductory track, “Deadly Sin,” a lovely indie pop jam that has energetic tendencies and singalong infectiousness.

Ever since Skaters’ teaser of an EP, I’ve been patiently waiting for their next release. Well, they’re back with a 7″, and one of the tracks, “Armed,” is a perfectly avant garde synth-rock trip.

Skaters has the ability to maintain quite a chill undertone while fearlessly topping that with edgy grunge overtones that makes for a sound they can call their own. The rhythm section has got a wordly tropicalia feel to it while the electric guitar keeps things raw and kraut. The vocals are atmospheric and reverberated, so much so that this song would be a lovely accompaniment to getting straight-up wasted. Cheers!

The other track to their 7″, “I Wanna Dance (But I Don’t Know How),” is a fun and more pop-friendly contrast to “Armed” and also deserves a listen, and then some.

Hailing from Korea, From the Airport is a band out to prove that Far East has kickass melodies that can compete with any Western band. I’ve always felt like the Asian indie world is a vastly underrepresented, and it’s  my goal  in the next year to fix that, kicking off my mission with this awesome new band with a plan for greatness.

Working with master engineer Chris Athens of Coldplay and Usher fame (oh, yeah, just *that* guy — no big deal), From the Airport emulate the frantic rhythms and psychedelic atmospherics of bands like Passion Pit, Strange Talk, TDCC, and Cull beautifully.

On “Timelines,” the band crafts a single that lifts you right into the sky befitting their name. “Timelines” is an energetic track all about fighting your body and mind for the chance to lift off, and recognizing that struggle in others as well. The song is replete with a chorus/verse structure that brings to mind resting, fallow periods and the bursts of energies that we use to cross the finish line and that make us feel alive.

Second up: can you believe this is a live recording? Turns out Mausi joined Huw Stephens for a BBC Radio 1 session at the start of May, performing this amazing track on the fly. Could have fooled me — the quality and execution is brilliant.

Keep your ears open for more from Mausi: this Newcastle-based quartet is destined to keep making ripples.

Some types of art never go out of style.  Take Shakespeare for instance.  It has been some 400 years since his plays have been performed at the Globe Theater in London, and many are still loved and revered.  Back in 1996, Baz Luhrmann took his own stab at a Shakespeare classic, and a pop culture icon was born.

Set in modern day Verona Beach, California but keeping the Elizabethan English, Romeo + Juliet introduced the story of the star-crossed lovers to a whole new generation.  In the process , it made stars out of Leonardo Dicaprio and Claire Danes, and gave us one of the best film soundtracks of its time.

Much of the soundtrack was a who’s who of late 90s alternative rock, featuring bands like Radiohead, Everclear and Garbage, which helped to define the sounds of the decade. I distinctly remember sitting in my high school English class watching this movie, and I remember thinking about how cool it was to be hearing Radiohead while I was at school.

One of the highlights of the film, though, was the scene at the party where Romeo and Juliet meet with the hauntingly raw and emotional Des’ree song “Kissing You” playing in the background.  This is a song that I could only imagine has made its way on to numerous mixtapes, made for romantic, intimate moments.

So, as Shakespeare has withstood the test of time, so will the Romeo + Juliet soundtrack. Enjoy highlights below!

True to form, this version of the massive retro hit single “Stayin’ Alive” is rich with synth work and harmony. With their signature approach, the band have stayed clear of anything too fancy or over the top, which is exactly how one should cover the Bee Gees.

The artwork on this track is also pretty sweet. Not exactly what I’d envisioned when I first heard “Stayin’ Alive,” but clearly quite applicable!

If you feel like a bit of good ol’ dirty rock today, have I got a treat for you. Sydney-based five-piece The Jones Rival have been around for a few years, honing a upbeat rock sound which could easily be from a bygone era.

With a couple of tracks in the bag already, they’ve just released their strongest to date, the barnstorming “Jumpin’ Frog.” The band reference the Rolling Stones as an influence, and you could almost picture Mick Jagger fronting them, given the swagger levels they produce on this single. Plenty of heavy guitar riffs and driving percussion are finished off with powerful, howling vocals — it’s nothing new, but these guys do it really well.

The Jones Rival are currently finishing up their debut EP, which is due out in the second half of the year.

Mesita is back with a new EP entitled XYXY, a gorgeously orchestrated experimental electro rock journey.

Mesita has the ability to combine delicate effects with harder instrumentals such as drums and booming bass, but the balance is just right. With twinkling piano and refreshing synth, the combination is a difficult one to pursue but Mesita is fearless and open-minded in his composition towards such ambitious sounds. The vocals are always choral and multi-layered, making each song a perfect ballad for a sing-along.

With every new Mesita release, I am in awe over and over again. He continues to reach new heights with each creation, making him untouchable. I urge you to check out Mesita’s XYXY EP and all of his other releases, too. It can open up a whole new realm of wonderment.

Cloudeater made their Indie Shuffle about a year ago with “The Dive,” an experimental rock record off of the band’s Sun and Sidearm LP. At the time, I wrote about how Cloudeater’s lead singer, Sam Dew, sounded a bit like Thom Yorke. Whether you agree with the Radiohead comparisons or not, I hope you find some time today to enjoy our premiere of Cloudeater’s new single, “Smog.”

“Smog” caught me off guard. This track is like a death march, with military-style drumming and these ominous synths that bellow up from deep underground. “And pretty soon I won’t feel at all,” Dew sings, seemingly resigned to the harsh realities of the life he’s chosen. Cliche or not, I can’t help but feel like I’m inhaling this track whenever I listen to it.

There’s no stopping the freight train that is Sydney duo Jagwar Ma. With a number of hit singles already on the books (“The Throw,” “What Love,” and “Come and Save Me“), they’re not content to sit on their well-earned laurels. Quickly developing a reputation for their globe trotting, they’re about to set off on another European tour, including stops at the Great Escape and Glastonbury Festivals in England. Just in time for this, they’ve launched another single of their upcoming debut album, Howlin.

“Man I Need” is a typically lengthy affair; topping out at 9:30, it dwarfs their previous single “The Throw” which was only a measly 7 minutes. It’s an intriguing listen though, with the track moving from stage-to-stage, exploring a number of different influences and flavors, from trance and techno to psych and pop, and everything in between. It would be silly to review this like any other song, because it’s completely different from anything currently being made.

With their album due out on June 7, they’ll need to wait till the end of July to launch their album at home with a spot at the Splendour in the Grass festival — a perfect way to celebrate.

After disappearing into hibernation for more than a year, Sydney-based Valar are back with brand new material, something I’m rather excited about. In fact, a new EP entitled Chocolate Cake is just around the corner — their first new release since 2011’s The Belly of the Whale.

I don’t mind waiting a little while for good music, and Valar has certainly delivered this with the EP’s first single “Astronaut.” I wouldn’t usually compare a band with Radiohead, but these guys earn the comparison with ease. Vocalist James Blackwood’s York-esque tones are ably supported by their typically celestial soundscapes. The highlight is its off-beat, jazz tempo which aids the track’s tranquil vibe to a tee.

Valar make music that you should listen to without distraction so that you are able to take in all its brilliant subtleties. Self-produced at a number of homes around the state, Chocolate Cake is due for release on July 31.

Sounds like: Ra Ra Riot, Vampire Weekend

Austin indie rock band SPEAK has just dropped their first new track in almost two years, titled “Peaks.”  At first listen, it sounds so familiar, yet so different.  It’s one of those tracks that stretches your tuned ear to a broader range of likening.  It’s also one of those tracks that doesn’t come along very often.  I am finding out that the song is getting better and better with each listen.

Taking a step back into SPEAK’s catalogue to give some of their old tunes a listen,  I have noticed the development and growth this band has made over the past few years.  It should be interesting and exciting to see a new full-length album from these guys and the direction they take things to.

With no official release date set, the band is touring a few dates with Ra Ra Riot over the upcoming months.  If you’re digging the track as much as I am, be on the look out for more updates from SPEAK.
