I’ve got some ear candy for you, and it’s not Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Beans. It’s pop ambient from Robot Science, turned out in the form of a short but sweet instrumental synth track characterized by dreamy beeps and bops.

Robot Science is Charlie Yin, aka popular producer Giraffage. I’m stoked to find this IDM/instrumental electro project of his, much different than his recent remixes we’ve been devouring. All the songs on this EP Good Luck are pretty great, albeit quite similar in nature.

This featured track, “Inhale,” is probably my favorite so far; it’s full of buzz, like a champagne cork popping out of a bottle. You’ll be addicted to the fizzy beats.

Well, that definitely worked out for me today, because I came across this great band Shady Elders. They described their sound as dream pop and shoegaze, and they definitely deliver.

After listening to their single “In the Waves,” I was very impressed with the scope of their sound. It’s dense and has a lot of harmonies, which makes for a smooth, luscious listen.

Mikal Cronin, mostly known for his fuzz guitar work in various Ty Segall bands, is now currently breaking out into Indie Rock’s collective consciousness. His first self-titled album was a delicately crafted album from the opening notes. It really popped out of nowhere for me.

In that regard, I saw this album coming from a mile away. After it was released last week or so, I was still impressively surprised at how great of a songwriter Cronin is. This whole album reminds me sometimes of The Byrds and then other times sounds like a stripped down Nirvana tune. All these influences coalesce into some of the best Pop Rock I’ve heard in a while. He even manages to throw in some noise guitar while you’re not paying and it all makes perfect sense. Check this album out now!

The release of Mount Kimbie’s much anticipated second album Cold Spring Fault Less Youth is nearly upon us, and the duo have now leaked another track from the album.

“You Took Your Time” features BBC Sound of 2013 nominee King Krule, who’s contribution to the track is questionable — his spoken word ramblings are not quite rapping and not quite singing, laying somewhere in between. Although we’re not particular fans of these vocals, it’s interesting to see Mount Kimbie take their work in a new direction.

We’re still waiting for Cold Spring Fault Less Youth with baited breath, but hopefully without the unnecessary guest appearances.

JC Brooks & the Uptown Sound exemplify what previous Chicago soul musicians like Sam Cooke, the Five Stairsteps, The Dells, and countless others have projected — a sense of community encapsulated and illustrated through emotional profundity that yearns for expression and admiration.

JC Brooks & the Uptown Sound are set to release Howl on May 21, 2013 on Bloodshot Records, their follow up to their breakthrough sophomore LP Want More (2011) that put the band on the indie map. Howl gives the listener the sense that the band has not only matured with their song writing, but have understood how to take ownership of a sound that is singularly theirs while uniquely Chicago.

The first of two immediate singles off the new record, “Rouse Yourself,” can be perfectly summed up by the description on Bloodshot Records site; it “is soul music by children of the post-punk era.” Nevertheless, it is a beautiful song with a crisp inertia and bravado reminiscent of Garland Green. However, it still has that thumping Fugazi like tone that makes you want to shake, shake, shake.

I’m glad that we can always count on Sweden for the most delectable and elegant indie pop. Club 8 duo Karolina Komstedt and Johan Angergård are, believe it or not, getting set to release their eighth album, Above The City, having released their debut album back in 1996. As old as they might be, there’s no doubt that they’re still sounding as fresh and modern as ever.

“I’m Not Gonna Grow Old” is the second single from the album, and it is a delightful sentiment. It’s yet another catchy indie pop piece infused with disco strings, anthemic choruses, well timed “oh oh ohs,” and just enough dance sensibility. We’re all going to grow old, but here’s hoping that this track makes you feel that much younger today.

Above The City  is out May 21, 2013 through Labrador Records.

I’m not exactly sure how to classify King Krule’s “The Noose of Jah City,” and I don’t care to. The British artist used to go by the name Zoo Kid before taking on a Donkey Kong-inspired alias. The 19-year-old (!) Brit has a cartoonishly thin frame that belies his deep baritone and introspective subject matter. That’s pretty much all I know of him, factually.

Musically, I know the kid is on some other shit. His self-titled EP from 2011 houses this monster track we’re streaming today. Somber and moody, the song pairs a faint guitar and a backbeat with Krule’s booming vocals. The song feels like Sade’s slow bullet; it builds gradually, but before you realize it, it’s hooked you in. It’s obviously got indie aesthetics, but I hear a veritable hip-hop influence — not only in the rhythm, but the way the sampled chord changes come in. I’m nearly illiterate in terms of formal music composition and knowledge, so I could be flat-out wrong, but something tells me I’m not.

It doesn’t particularly take talent to get a buzz. A well-connected and well-implemented plan and the right aesthetics can do the trick, but it is very encouraging to see someone so young produce something of such force and gain recognition. I’m obviously late to the party, but I’m definitely keeping my eye on this guy.

Holy mother of God. Seven listens in and I still can’t take this song off repeat. From start to finish, it comes across as an absolute masterpiece.

Austin indie rock band SPEAK has just dropped their first new track in almost two years, titled “Peaks.”  At first listen, it sounds so familiar, yet so different.  It’s one of those tracks that stretches your tuned ear to a broader range of likening.  It’s also one of those tracks that doesn’t come along very often.  I am finding out that the song is getting better and better with each listen.

Taking a step back into SPEAK’s catalogue to give some of their old tunes a listen,  I have noticed the development and growth this band has made over the past few years.  It should be interesting and exciting to see a new full-length album from these guys and the direction they take things to.

With no official release date set, the band is touring a few dates with Ra Ra Riot over the upcoming months.  If you’re digging the track as much as I am, be on the look out for more updates from SPEAK.

Song: Slow No Wake - Everyone Needs Someone [download here]

Any Tame Impala fans out there? That was the first band I thought of when listening to “Everyone Needs Someone” by Ohio-based Slow No Wake. It’s hard for me to understate how much I am digging the psychedelic vibes on this track, even though Slow No Wake is a one-person act and has technically classified “Everyone Needs Someone” as a demo.

Demo or not, I had to share this track. It resonates with me in the same way certain Youth Lagoon and Porcelain Raft songs do. There’s a spaciousness to “Everyone Needs Someone” that allows me to take my shoes off and get lost in it. I can feel that slide guitar in my bones, and want to be best friends with all that reverb.

I discovered Slow No Wake on Twitter. Check out his SoundCloud for more psychedelic jams, and prepare yourselves for his debut album, which should drop by the end of the summer.

Take a dash of Phil Elverum, a splash of Daniel Johnston, and maybe a hint of Broken Social Scene, and you cook up singer-songwriter Daniel Gélinas, the man behind lo-fi pop rock project YouYourself&i.

With his repetitive guitar strumming and soft whispers that almost sound like pillow chatter to ex-lovers, his work will hit you like yesterday’s longing. This featured song, PLASTICITY, is indicative of a ‘wealth of talent’ wrapped up in that Montreal indie goodness. As Zach Hart* over at We Listen for You explained,

“I’m guilty of great hyperbole, but I promise, no matter what type of music listener you are, if you give this collection your honest attention and time, a great reward awaits.”

Definitely agreed with that sentiment: this is music that sweetens with repeat listens. Just spend some time with his full 2011 release, Book of Questions. It’s spine-tingling. Right now, I’m all about the track Escalator, a vocal pairing with singer Veronica Charnley. Amazing.

You can listen to the TREACLE WELL, his recent two-part album where this featured track sits, on Bandcamp. Only four tracks from each section of that album are available for listening, but it’s enough to see what you’ve been missing.

On their debut album, Corners, indie band HAP possesses a wonderfully cheerful quality, which shines through in guitarist and lead vocalist Ned Porter’s bubbly streams of consciousness and even more so in the band’s quirky, carnivalesque arrangements. From a songwriting perspective, HAP owes a significant debt to 1960s pop, but it’s safe to say no British invasion bands sounded quite like this.

Members Sam Smith (guitar/piano), Stephen Yell (drums/percussion), and Evan Becker (bass) all contribute something unique to HAP’s sound, an appealing amalgam of traditional instruments and electronic bells and whistles. On standout track “Shopping the Collection,” synthesizers that one might expect to find in arcade games mingle freely with guitar chords, yielding an organic blend of the new and the familiar. There’s also more than a hint of XTC’s critically-adored but commercially underrated 1986 release Skylarking lurking in this and other tracks, albeit with a thoroughly modern feel. A bevy of unexpected sounds fill out the band’s sound in a way that feels essential and never superfluous, an essential component of HAP’s identity.

As if to highlight the congruity of influences new and old, HAP turn to what they affectionately refer to as their fifth band member: an antique radio known as the “the Admiral.”  Although it does not own a ship and is probably not fond of being dunked in water, the old workhorse, a constant presence on stage at HAP’s concerts that also functions as the band’s logo, endows each song with an endearing vocabulary of bleeps, bloops and other noises that could come from an old game system. Those who doubt that an old-fashioned radio could possibly accomplish so much are onto something: there is far more to the Admiral than meets the eye. Its sounds are in fact programmed by the band members into a lightbox resting in its metallic core.

There might be other ways to replicate the Admiral’s distinctive warble, but they are not known to this critic. As it stands, the precocious radio is a testament to the band’s artistic vision, one that encompasses old classics like the Kinks just as effectively as new favorites like the Animal Collective. In an indie rock culture singularly obsessed with all things “retro,” the Admiral is a brilliant bit of iconography and ultimately makes for a far more striking onstage companion than a laptop.

None of this is to say that the musicians of HAP are less than impressive in their own right. Take the Admiral out of the picture, and the songs still boast formidable musicianship and songcraft. However, HAP is less about showcasing the talents of each individual member and more about fostering a mood from the sum of its parts. As rewarding as it is to absorb the intricacies of HAP’s layered production, theirs is not purely cerebral music.

Listening to tracks like “Shopping the Collection,” it’s impossible not to feel the urge to get up and move. Like Dan Deacon,  HAP provokes a feeling of effervescent joy that lends itself well to dancing while also providing enough nuance to reward repeated listening on a pair of headphones. In other words, this is the kind of music that’s as invigorating in the moment as it is rewarding to have on your playlist for the long haul.

Here’s the thing about the Greek Theater in Berkeley: it’s pretty difficult to have a bad show-going experience there. There’s not a bad seat in the house, thanks to the surprisingly intimate set-up of the classic amphitheater. Sitting way up on the lawn? You have jaw-dropping views of San Francisco to back the band. Shows here seem epic, grand, larger-than-life.

It’s a perfect venue for Dr. Dog. The Philadelphia-based six-piece band thrives on the epic — their layered, building orchestrations veering between drama and joy with ease. It’s a sound that comes through on their albums and is even more captivating in a live performance.

For this show, Dr. Dog was the opener for current indie-folk darlings The Lumineers. Rather than detract from their performance, being followed by The Lumineers further emphasized for me just how superior Dr. Dog is as a band, as performers, and as songwriters. Their songs have sticking power that goes beyond simple catchiness. Their songs are carefully crafted, layered affairs, that demand a level of attention and immersion that the simple stomp-happy melodies of The Lumineers can’t touch.. at least, not yet.

Dr. Dog’s set, while shorter than I’d have liked, covered numbers from their most recent album, Be The Void, including a rousing rendition of album opener “Lonesome,” but dug back into older material, including a totally show-stopping performance of “Shame, Shame.”

This is a band that gets better with every album, and every performance. Their passion catapults their songs deep into memory. They are absolutely the headliner, whether or not they’re billed as such.

I’ve never really understood, or rather jumped on, the Lana Del Rey backlash bandwagon. It’s difficult for me to doubt her authenticity because she substantiates her presented persona in a way that’s irreplaceable; I don’t mean that we couldn’t go on without her music, but that I couldn’t imagine anyone else being her.

Maybe Tavi Gevinson understood the psychology of Del Rey best when she said, “[Lana] has many different qualities that women in our culture aren’t allowed to be, all at once, so people are trying to find the inauthentic one.” However, it’s the multiple personalities that makes her enigmatic persona attractive, and by default then, her voice, which seems as organic an extension as possible.

“Young & Beautiful” comes from The Great Gatsby soundtrack and dilutes her friction to its purest, most alluring form. “Will you still love me when I’m no longer young and beautiful?” she haunts, “I know you will,” with the supporting drama of an imagined full electronic orchestra.

Loon Lake are a Melbourne-based garage rock band consisting of three brothers and their two mates. Their single “Cherry Lips” finished at #29 (smack bang between Bat for Lashes and Django Django) in the 2012 edition of Triple J’s Hottest 100, and they’ve gained a significant following locally, having sold out numerous shows around the country. Now they’re taking their music to the rest of the world, with two tracks now available for a free download in anticipation of their upcoming debut album release.

“On Fire” is a track full of drive and energy; their music has always had a certain bravado, and this one if full of it. From the howling vocals, the ripping guitar riffs, and the pounding percussion, this is a band dripping with classic rock influences. What’s surprising is the short, almost delicate, interlude towards the end, before they finish off the frantic track as it began. Sitting here listening to their SoundCloud, I’m immediately surprised at how many of their songs have been stuck in my head at one time or another – they’re just that catchy.

Keep an eye out later in the year for the album release, but in the meantime, visit their SoundCloud!

It’s been almost a year since Donald released his free mixtape Royalty, and two months since he produced Kilo Kish’s tracks. We’ve missed him. So, you can imagine how stoked we are to hear a new track like this — and, best of all, it’s a return to his Culdesac days, with tight world play and impressive flow. I’m loving his typical introspective lyrics; it’s always nice to hear a star share the mundane feelings of the everyday, especially when it’s over a sweet soul-style sample off Funk Master Flex’s tape, produced by Chemist.

Yeah, you read that right. Funk-fucking-Master Flex.

This track is on the DJ’s newest release, Who You Mad At? Me Or Yourself?. The legendary mixtape master dropped tracks that’ll remind you of the good ‘ole days – an homage to his 90s compilation series. The epic track list features big names like Cam’ron, Lil Wayne, J. Cole, Fabolous, A$AP Rocky, among others. Seriously, the list goes on and on: it has almost 50 tracks. Damn.

This is a great album from FMF, with an amazing contribution by Childish. Check out the entire mixtape through his app. Didn’t have those back in the 90s…

We sincerely hope it won’t be another year until we see more pure Childish tracks. Stay on top of Donald news on the fan website forever Childish.

You guys might recognize the mysterious duo Be&Bea from my review back in March. At the time I knew very little, but after getting to know them a little better over the last couple of months, I can finally reveal a bit more information about them. We also get to premiere their newest single “God Knows”!

I was half right in saying that they were from London. However, it just so happens that the other half is from New York. Also, their actual names are Be (Benjamin) and Bea (Beatie). Be works on the production, while Bea is the voice behind those silky vocals we heard in “Grow” and now this latest single.

It’s a really lovely follow-up single in my opinion, remarkably different than their debut — save for Bea’s soulful and angelic vocals, which so far have served as the centerpiece to their songs. It’s largely synth-y as you’ll probably notice, but it gives the single a real kick and bounce to it.

2/2 so far from the duo, and I’m sure there’s more good work to come this year from them.

What I like most about writing for Indie Shuffle is the fact that I get to introduce you guys to a host of bands that you’ve probably never heard of. Boy, have these guys come out swinging with this one. You would never believe that this four piece is just starting out with such a polished and refined sound. It’s such an easy listening rock track, filled with numerous hooks throughout the verses and chorus. At the moment, they’re being likened to The 1975, The Neighbourhood and Pacific Air, which seems like an odd combination, but on first listen you can see how they encapsulate a variety of sounds.

“Pocket Full Of Change” will be released as part of their debut EP ME, which is out May 7, 2013. Until then get your free copy from their SoundCloud!

Melbourne’s Josh Simmons (+ team) is Buchanan, an indie pop act that’s been kicking around for the past few years. After releasing two EPs (The Safety Beach & No Photo), they’ve been working on their debut album, Human Spring, over the past 18 months. Enlisting some high profile assistants – production from Catherine Marks (Foals, Death Cab), mixing from Andy Baldwin (Midnight Juggernauts, Bjork), and mastering from Geoff Pesche (Coldplay, Radiohead) – the album was put together in various studios around the world.

Human Spring will be out on May 10, but we’ve already been treated to a listen of the album’s first two singles – with “Run Faster” and “When the Sun Comes Around Again” available on Buchanan’s SoundCloud. Now a third single, title track “Human Spring,” has been released, and it’s a bit of a barnstormer. Maintaining a frantic pace throughout, the percussion comes to the fore while Simmons’ soaring vocals tell an emotional story of a soldier away from home. Clocking in at just over three minutes, Buchanan sure fit a lot into the punchy track, which will appeal to fans of Two Door Cinema Club.

There’s a bit of hype around this album release, so it’ll be interesting to hear it in full. See you in a few weeks, Buchanan.

Sounds like: Passion Pit, The Naked and the Famous, Strange Talk

Perth-based electronic duo Sun City have been a favorite of Indie Shuffle listeners since we first posted about them last year. One of their first recorded tracks, their single “Zoetrope,” was released on their first EP back in 2011, but we’re just sharing it with you now. Better late than never, right?

Many Australians got a taste of “Zoetrope” when it appeared on popular Masterchef series. It’s much more important to the duo though, since the track was written as a small dedication to their long-time friend Sam Trowbridge, who sadly lost his life in a freak accident in April 2011. With the two-year anniversary of Sam’s passing, it’s a great time to touch on this excellent tune which once again highlights Sun City’s well-produced electro-pop stylings.

Sydney producer Jordan F. has also provided a remix to this track, which is available on SoundCloud. Sun City are currently working on their first LP release, due out later this year.

RIP Sam.

Perth-based electronic duo Sun City have been a favorite of Indie Shuffle listeners since we first posted about them last year. One of their first recorded tracks, their single “Zoetrope,” was released on their first EP back in 2011, but we’re just sharing it with you now. Better late than never, right?

Many Australians got a taste of “Zoetrope” when it appeared on popular Masterchef series. Ra Ra Riot’s Beta Love LP, released on January 22, 2013, is one of my favorite albums of the year. If you can remember, we featured a flurry of their songs, including “Dance With Me,” ”Is It Too Much” and “When I Dream,” in December 2012 and January 2013.

If you wanted more from Ra Ra Riot, it’s your lucky day because they are releasing a special Binary Mind 10″ for Record Store Day (April 20, 2013). This 10″ includes unreleased song “All I Fear,” an indie pop track with great violin work, good bouncing drums, and solid guitar strumming. The 10″ will also feature demo versions of  ”Binary Mind,” “Wilderness” and “I Shut Off.”

Around this time last  year, I introduced Young Hunting’s “Maze” as an example of my summertime playlists. This time around, they are giving us a more mellowed-out track that brings forward more in-depth emotions and faded psychedelia.

Their lush, dream pop aesthetic combined with lyrical embodiment of failed affairs creates a decadent melancholy that I tend to gravitate towards during my workweek seclusions. If you’re looking for something to mellow out to (or possibly even let out some silent tears to), “Baby’s First Steps” will set the perfect mood.
