Chicago-based DJ BeazyTymes has beefed up The xx’s “Unfold” with a new take on trap that involves minimal productions and an emphasis on heavy bass. Because this guy isn’t new to the game of remixing songs by The xx, it comes as no surprise that he gives his audience something worth getting excited over.

Drawing in a more spacial composition with heavy bass beats, this minimal electronica remix focuses your hearing on not only the haunting beats, but the mesmerizing vocals. While there are numerous The xx remixes out there, I have to say this is probably one of the better ones that I’ve come across. Taking a song of this caliber and building it up without interrupting its structure sounds like it would be a difficult task, but this mixologist manages to keep it all intact and treats our ears to something quite stunning.

Truth be told, I haven’t been that thrilled with the releases coming out of The Great Gatsby soundtrack—heresy, I know, considering the joyous reaction the songs have been getting. Outside the exquisite Kulkid remix of LDR, I’ve found the songs are just too maudlin (which is saying something, from someone who basically bathes himself in the mawkish).

I felt this way until the new The xx track, “Together,” dropped. “Together” walks the tense tightrope between morose minimalism that maximizes its emotions without ever crossing the line into “Hey, man, let me get you an entire box of tissues for you emotional fit” territory as the soundtrack’s other power ballads have done. And that’s not to say I don’t like power ballads, but soundtrack ballads tend to lean towards the cheap seats, and that’s just not my cup of tea.

This, on the other hand, is wondrously haunting. So, Jay-Z, if the other tracks take this angle, I just might be on board with your producing project…

If you’re a fan of The Knife and have heard the majority of tracks from their latest Shaking The Habitual album, you might notice that these guys tend to play with the unexpected. I personally had to listen to “A Tooth For An Eye” several times before it actually started to grow on me, but once it did, I couldn’t get enough.

Today we have a nice remix brought to us by female producer Pursuit Grooves. Her take on “A Tooth For An Eye” is a little more unconventional, with exposed bass protrusions and uncompromising shapeshifting beats that transport the track into other musical territory. First premiered as a rip on Ben UFO’s Rinse FM show and now released to the world for free, “Made To Stray” is the first track we’ve heard from Mount Kimbie’s second album, Cold Spring Fault Less Youth.

After helping to define the post-dubstep sound along with acts like James Blake on their debut, Crooks & Lovers, “Made To Stray” is the first indication of the direction the duo is taking on their new album.

Honestly, there’s only so much you can glean from one track, but horns are an interesting addition, and a continuation of what they were doing before would hardly be a bad thing. We’ll have to wait and see for Cold Spring Fault Less Youth, which is due out May 27, 2013.

Friend Within is an alias out of London that was ironically recognized throughout SoundCloud as “Unknown.” While we still don’t know who is actually the man (or woman?) behind the mask, we do know that s/he was credited through Disclosure’s recent XLR8R podcast with great fanfare.

“The Cause” is a melting pot of soulful R&B-inspired vocals layered on top of fluid synth and bold, bouncing house electronics. But don’t let my description of these various genres fool you  – all of these elements fuse together to launch a style that is all its own. Whether you listen to this track in an underground London nightclub or through your headphones in a San Francisco train station, you’re gonna want to groove and get down.

Friend Within will be releasing its forthcoming EP, The Underground, April 1, 2013 via Hypercolor.

There is an element of simplicity to this track, quintessential to Cralias’ approach on many of his other remixes, including his remix of Lana Del Ray’s “Video Games.”

Based out of London, Cralias is easing his way up the musical ladder, gaining respect from industry personnel and listeners worldwide for his carefully crafted remixes and bootlegs. He’s still very much so an up-and-comer (with only 136 followers on SoundCloud currently), but we’re expecting big things from him.

At first listen, you might think this is another side project from Jamie xx.  While they both hail from the UK, the duo responsible for this instrumental odyssey is made up of two teens: Abi Dersiley and Matt Canhham.  The young production team have yet to release their highly anticipated debut album, but sources have confided in me that this electronic band is the future of music.  They both share producing duties, but other tracks also showcase Abi’s wonderfully soulful vocals as well.

A subtle conga beat resonates throughout this minimalist track as some distorted bass echoes in and out.  The light jangling of guitar riffs also add a dose of flavor to this simple yet complex work of art.  Stay tuned, as this is definitely the first of many hits for this young new band.

It’s about time we added another tasty deep house track to the Shuffle. UK producers Jae B and Forrest put together a winning combination of timeless R&B vocals and pulsing sonics.

Not only is it a sexy way to roll through your afternoon, but it may inject a false sense of personal steeze that’s as empowering as it is brief. Therefore, I encourage you to replay as much as needed.

“Is It True” finds its release via PetFood, a Miami-based label with as wide a variety of artists as the infamous The Winter Music Conference. In other words, you’d be hard-pressed to not find something that strikes your fancy.

First up, let’s be clear: the audio quality here could be better. The track was ripped from a live set by Four Tet, and includes some messed up talking-over-the-music toward the end.

Putting that aside though, this is like hipster heaven. Four Tet remixing 2012′s hottest blog artist Grimes? OH LORD PLEASE YES.

So, iTunes is giving this awesome remix away for free. And when I checked out the landing page (I think it’s Australia only?), I noticed an awesome customer review:

By now you may have heard of Samir Alikhanizadeh, aka Happa. He’s a 15-year old house/techno producer based in Leeds, UK. I wrote back in July that Happa had “an unprecedented knack (in my humble opinion) for turning sparse, sprawling beats in to something much more. Kudos to him for shining a funky light on some of the dark crevices of the future garage and techno caverns.”

After listening to “Freak” several times, I stand behind what I said about the young beatmaker. Happa’s approach reminds me slightly of what Jamie xx delivers with his DJ sets  — minimal, dry house. Jamie usually includes some tropical cuts, which is not what Happa’s known to deliver. I can just sense his influence there. Then again, who isn’t Jamie xx influencing these days?

Happa’s tracks sometimes disappear off SoundCloud, so I’d enjoy this one while you can.

Stubborn Heart is Luca Santucci and Ben Fitzgerald. The duo drew attention last year with their track “Need Someone” and inevitable comparisons to Jamie Woon, Jamie xx and James Blake.

Now, the same track is featured on their self-titled debut LP, yet the rest of the album leads them into a beautifully somber territory of their own.

In “Starting Block,” Santucci’s melancholic vocals seep out, the way someone’s broken speech would while loosing a few tears. He sometimes breathes with longing and sometimes cries with disillusionment over scattered percussion. A pensive melody carries throughout and ends by tragically pulling at heart strings.

After a rather enjoyable swim in sadness, change up the mood by checking out their recently released four-track 12″ single featuring remixes via One Little Indian Records.

If you ask me, Sam Smith’s textured vocals layered on top of a luxurious, slowed-down backbeat is the ideal musical equation if you’re yearning to bump, grind and make sweet, sweet late-night lovin’.

Before you complain about yet ANOTHER remix of a song by The xx, I must tell you how worthy this one is of your listening attention. This time around, “Infinity” has been molded into a sultry substance injected with mechanical synths.

Flufftronix, a DJ/producer working out of Philadelphia, explains how he “popularizes the flipside to dubstep’s more testosterone-driven household sound,” arriving at one of his best releases to date since his emergence back in 2006.

His re-buffering of “Infinity” was used by Alexander Wang in his first ever Internet video campaign in 2010, which hit home in the fashion community and caught him consequent attention from XL records.

It is evident that many of his influences circulate around artists such as Untold, New Order and Le Knight Club, as his sensual grooves touch all the bases of luvstep, heavy bass and dubstep.

Before you complain about yet ANOTHER remix of a song by The xx, I must tell you how worthy this one is of your listening attention. This time around, “Infinity” has been molded into a sultry substance injected with mechanical synths.

My birthday is next month, but I’m pretty sure the UK just gave me an early present tonight. Kieran Hebden, more commonly known as Four Tet, just uploaded a stunning remix of his single “Lion” by fellow Englishman Jamie xx.

Jamie xx (of The xx) has placed delicately minimal and subtle touches to Hebden’s original, almost completely fading into oblivion in some magical moments. Where the original carries intensity and almost tribal overtones, Jamie xx brings a placidity to listeners. It’s beautiful yet bare, and an absolutely mesmerizing way to round out your weekend.

Searching for good music is like any other skill: it takes practice. With consistent effort, tiny gems begin to present themselves to you, and all that strenuous mental labor pays off. Eye of the tiger ladies and gents. Eye of the tiger.

Really, I’m smacking my forehead for not scoping out Mobilee Records sooner. With artists like Maya Jane Coles, it’s a sure sign that good taste is abound, but Re.you’s, Mind Your Head EP is really just a special treat for the label.

The Berlin-based producer is not signed to the Mobilee, he actually has his own label, Tiefschwarz: Souvenir Musicbut. As with many other EDM artists, shopping tracks around once in a while “seeking labels to harvest his funky house seeds in” (according to Mobilee) is pretty common practice and great for exposure.

In this case, it’s a win win for both parties, as “Junction” is a proper track and an instant party hit.
