What's so good?

For a second — just a split second — I thought Mr. Little Jeans had decided to cover TLC’s “Waterfalls.” And you can’t blame me: those lyrics sound might familiar! Turns out it’s actually a Paul McCartney original, also titled “Waterfalls.”

Which leaves me of two minds: 1) excitement about an unexpected new release from Mr. Little Jeans, and 2) slight disappointment that it isn’t a TLC cover. Sure McCartney is great and all, but I’m not personally familiar with his original :(

“Waterfalls” is the fourth song (and third original) we’ve heard from Mr. Little Jeans, clearly hinting at an upcoming album in the near future. While this one’s an enjoyable track, I’m hoping that the others pick up the pace a bit. Any more of this and I’ll probably lull myself to sleep.

Once a year, we get to hear from Mr. Little Jeans. Back in 2011 it was her awesome cover of Arcade Fire’s “The Suburbs,” and then in 2012 came her first original single, “Runaway.”

Flash forward to 2013, and Hilly Dilly managed to get his hands on a beautiful new single called “Oh Sailor.” Featuring the Silverlake Conservatory of Music Youth Chorale (who you might recognize from Ryan Gosling’s Dead Mans Bones), the song is a great taste of what’s to come on her upcoming album, produced by Tim Anderson.

Keep your ears perked — not only are we expecting a remix of this song by Strange Talk, but rumor has it Mr. Little Jeans has a cover of Paul McCartney’s “Waterfalls” lined up.

What's so good?

After what has seemed like a crazy long wait since his self-titled EP, MMOTHS has finally released his new EP entitled Diaries.

Filled with all of the haunting vocals and downtempo beats that we’ve come to expect from the young Irish producer, MMOTHS continues to grow as an artist on Diaries, and carves out his own niche in the world of electronic chill out.

The track “For Her” is definitely one of the standouts and features some soulful vocals from the L.A.-based Young & Sick. It really makes the track pull at the heart strings, as beautiful piano chords echo over MMOTHS’ methodical, noise filled beats.

This is the kind of song that almost makes you feel happy in sadness, as it just drips with sorrow-filled emotion. I can’t wait to continue to be enveloped in the world of MMOTHS as Diaries gets put on heavy repeat!

What's so good?

We covered the original “Green Garden“ back in January, and I really wanted to love this track as much as her others. After all, the melody lilted with serene bursts of color, the vocals ascended with a rosiness that seemed cherubic, and the hand claps punctuated the proper skips in your heart — but that punctuation was just too neat, everything a little too in its place.

It wasn’t a “She“ (which I spent countless hours listening to in the bath), and since the production was technically pristine, I thought I should be at least bowled over by Mvula’s creativity. But it wasn’t until I heard Monsieur Adi’s remix that I understood why Mvula’s version never connected: the beauty of her tracks are their ability to wander wildly through an amorphous arrangement that ends up replete with emotional revelations at unexpected moments. “Green Garden” kept a poker face (albeit a happy one) throughout its 3:50 and I just wanted to see it exasperatedly sigh once.

So what I appreciate the most about Monsieur Adi‘s remix is that it doesn’t show its cards right away. The arrangement shuffles and sidesteps its way through the song, always smart to be at a perfect level of tension with the lyrics; thereby, providing a whole set of new avenues for the song to explore. You won’t find us walking down the sunny street in Mvula’s video doing a jolly exultation in this track, though. Rather, Monsieur Adi turn “Green Garden” into an exploration in anguish and anxiety before a moment of action.

Monsieur Adi’s arrangement uses synths and strings to read the lyrics in a way that conveys travelling through a depressed mind about to step into the sunlight. That mind doesn’t jump sans helmet straight into the bright road. It hems, it haws, it circles back further into the darkness and sometimes it sits in a neurotic stasis that you can’t hope to decipher. Even that smiling face it braves in its first steps out in the light is littered with cues of false bravado. I felt like Mvula’s version forgot that joy inspired by hope is only cheap chutzpah initially, and Monsieur Adi’s lets linger the many missteps that lead to the song’s merrier lyrical couplets.

But maybe I’ve just learned to not trust a happy song, or I’m jealous I’ve never escaped from languishing luck in a straight line like Mvula’s original version. So, mad credit to Monsieur Adi for keeping Mvula’s spirit alive while also turning the bare bones of her track into something brilliantly layered for us darker hues in the human palette. I always did like the track after all, I just needed my entryway in.

MMOTHS caught our attention a little over six months ago when the 18-year-old Irishman teamed up with Superhumanoids. The combination worked out quite fantastically, with a slightly chillwave but wholly original sound.

This week, MMOTHS is back with a new single, featuring the beautiful vocals of Holly Miranda (who we’ve featured a few times). The song is due to be released on his upcoming EP Diaries, to be released March 4th.

“All These Things” is slightly more upbeat than the aforementioned Superhumanoids track, and doesn’t see MMOTHS chiming in with his own vocals (as he has in the past). Ultimately, a haunting but promising track.

So, Purity Ring’s Shrines wasn’t for everyone — anytime you focus on the convergence of aesthetics and machines to simulate a roller coaster of emotions, you’re going to find yourself in a bit of a niche market. Especially when the project is seen in full and not just in luscious singles like “Belispeak” and “Lofticries.” But, for me, it was the very essence of their project completed — fully defining their aesthetic as a band — that blew me away in 2012.

And from that album, “Grandloves“ was my favorite ‘new’ track for reasons our remix artist du jour can explain better than I. His remix of the track was done to:

“…try to capture and reflect upon a certain feeling — the one when you realize that your life is so wildly out of control, so much more than you had ever thought; but you come to peace with it and accept the world for what it is: Grandloves.”

And I think his remix captured those exact feelings in abundance. Speeding up the track in a subtle (but definitely over 130bpm) way and adding wet reverb, snares, vocal chopping, and a few electric piano bridges, the song becomes a consuming affair. It feels like every two seconds the song pulls you in to embrace you and then throws you back out to an isolating cold. It’s that icy warmth that Purity Ring mastered so well in their aesthetic improved on in ways I didn’t think anyone could.

Remixing Purity Ring is really something best left to the artists themselves, because it can be quite messy. So, kudos to DJ Darkgrey for pulling it off so spectacularly. Give him some love at his Facebook and Soundcloud if you like this track, and grab a free download.

What's so good?

So, this is definitely an interesting track. Particularly from the instrumental perspective. It’s sorta like listening to Gold Panda, M83 and Bjork all at once.

And no, Young Wonder aren’t from Scandinavia. They’re actually Irish!

Which leaves me having a hard time pegging the instruments used in the background (mostly due to ignorance). There’s certainly a good bit of Asian guitar, but pegging down the exact instrument is difficult given there are ~20 types.

On top of that, it sounds like there may be bagpipe samples?! Which makes sense given the band’s geographic location.

Either way, it’s a unique track, and for that I’ll give it today’s Song of the Day.

What's so good?

My friend introduced me to this remix by saying, “If you listen closely, you can hear the sky falling” — which was so disarmingly apt that it influences my every repeat listen. Keep Shelly in Athens’ work often feels like exhilarating suffocation or walking in perpetuity through a colorfully, vivid Hitchcock film (in all the best ways), but this has a whole new approach to it.

The sky is indeed falling in this song, but the track doesn’t take us on a gothic, Chicken Little adventure. Instead, Keep Shelly in Athens’ production makes the song feel like space pop in a very M83 fashion. But if M83 is a band that instills a visceral, extragalactic experience to the listener, this track is your space shuttle into that orbit. For a band so focused on being grounded in your emotions like Keep Shelly in Athens, this is a novel and beautiful disruption of that.

While this is the first mention of Young Wonder on Indie Shuffle, I predict it won’t be the last for the Irish based band. Check out more at their SoundCloud and catch a free download as well. What's so good?

The only time we’ve ever covered London-based Avec Sans was for their cover of Bon Iver’s “Perth.” It was one of the more original we’d heard, heavy on synth (with just a splash of darkness).

“The Answer” is the second original single to be released by the band (I missed the first, otherwise I’d have known what to expect). Turns out they sound a bit like Tegan and Sara, with all the modern synthwave flare of Haerts and/or Kopps.

The track definitely demonstrates that the group hold big promise for the future. I don’t think they’ll necessarily “break out” on a large scale any time soon, but I expect that quite a number of blogs will be picking this up.

A month or two ago, Stumbleine released one of my favorite tracks this year, a cover of Mazzy Star’s “Fade Into You,” featuring Stefaloo. The song is set to be released on his upcoming album Spiderwebbed, due for release on October 29th.

But as so many artists do these days, Stumbleine decided to release an EP in advance, featuring “The Beat My Heart Skips” and “Kaleidoscope.” The former, featuring vocals by CoMa, totally jumped out to me for its ‘dreamgaze’ sound — a signature style Stumbleine seems to be fostering.

What's so good?

Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game” is perhaps one of the better known songs to come out of the late 80s, though I’ll confess that while I recognize it by tune, I had no idea he was the man responsible.

The song gained worldwide attention when it was featured in the Nicolas Cage epic Wild At Heart, released way back in 1990. Since then there have been countless interpretations, including this very recent cover by Widowspeak.

Coves have actually done a fantastic job giving this song the down and grungy sound it deserves. If you’re curious to hear more from the UK-based duo, be sure to follow them on Facebook.

On October 29th, UK-based producer Stubmleine will be releasing his first ever album, Spiderwebbed. I find that a bit surprising, given he’s got more than 40 tracks floating out on the internet.

But, perhaps this stands as a strong indicator of the direction many artists are going these days: it’s no longer about album releases; it’s all about the singles and EPs.

All that aside, Stumbleine’s cover of “Fade Into You” was just released as one of the first singles off Spiderwebbed. Those of you familiar with 90s tunes will recognize it as Mazzy Star’s 1994 original. But, as RCRD LBL points out, this may as well be a whole new song.

As the seasons change and my musical tastes change with them, it’s nice to know that a Teen Daze track still has the power to wrap me in its chillwave arms and hug the stress right out of my day. I find myself quite entranced with this particular remix of “Brooklyn Sunburn” and feel it just may trump the original.

Philadelphia-based producer Lushlife adds some much-needed emotional depth to “Brooklyn Sunburn” with his superb vocal samples and melodic flairs. Teen Daze provided the foundation, but Lushlife has made this tune his own. It’s raspy, yet instead of drowning in all the sound I find myself uplifted. Here’s hoping Teen Daze and Lushlife end up working together sometime soon.

Don’t be fooled — this isn’t a folksy cover. What Avec Sons have done here is pretty dramatically different from the original, but oh so awesome!

A relatively unknown group out of London, Avec Sans have a distinctly synth-pop sound, instantly comparable to Mr. Little Jeans. Their Facebook page gives very little detail as to what their deal is, save for that there are two members: Alice Fox and Jack St. James.

Either way, it’s a unique take on the song, one I personally enjoy quite a bit.

Okay, this is easily one of the best remixes I’ve heard in April, and that’s saying a lot considering the volume we go through. Chillwave to the core, the gentle twists and turns provided by Greek duo Keep Shelly In Athens are pure magic to my ears.

It’s no coincidence that the two bands have teamed up. Indie pop outfit Jonquil is actually on tour with Keep Shelly In Athens, and as is not too infrequently seen, the two appear to be combining their exceptional talent.

The song “Run” comes off Jonquil’s recent release Point of Go, which you can get a taste of here.

Behold the beauty of social media. All-around creative type Jordan Rosenberg tweeted Grimes a link to a remix he made for her. Well, Grimes loves the track and decides to retweet it. This, my friends, is how I came to hear the Red Ranger’s remix of “Genesis” for myself. Thanks to Twitter and a down to earth musician, Jordan Rosenberg is officially on the map.

His “Seymour Flux Remix” goes so well with what I am vibing with at the moment. It’s ethereal (whatever that means!), full of solid drum & bass work and goes well with morning and evening playlists. I am not sure how long Jordan has been producing, but a remix like this has me hoping this is only the genesis.

Brace yourselves, folks. Mr. Little Jeans is poised to emerge as the next buzz band in the indie world, and with good reason — her latest track “Runaway” is a wonderfully upbeat, synth-pop anthem. Basically, I’d argue that she’s Grimes, but actually good.

She first caught my attention with her cover of The Arcade Fire’s “Suburbs,” appropriately described at the time as “entrancing.” Indeed, with “Runaway” she has managed to cast a similar spell on my mind.

The song will be released on her upcoming album, titled Mr. Little Jeans (original, no?).

I have no idea what the genre “avant-pop” is, but Pitchfork has dubbed Hundred Waters a band to champion the sound. Their latest album Sonnet contains a number of great songs, including this single “Boreal.”

This is perhaps one of the best songs I’ve heard in a few weeks. “Alpha People” features an excellent chord progression, hypnotic synth-work, and drop dead gorgeous vocals.

Off the upcoming album Supermigration, “Alpha People” brings in Sarah, lead singer of Keep Shelly in Athens to lead the charge. I’d argue that that is the root of this song’s success — but I’d be wrong: the instrumentation would be a stand-out alone.

Greece’s Keep Shelly In Athens has just released their debut EP, Our Own Dream, and nothing gets better than this melancholy disco goodness. If you’re into heavy, downtempo bass, stacked synths, intricate drum machine beats, and reverberated penetrating vocals, then this may be your new favorite EP. This boy-girl duo has gained recognition so quickly that they now have somewhat of a cult following, and it’s clear why that is.

This entire EP is a synth-soaked sea of ambient waves. It’s shimmering, raw, and refreshing. Don’t expect to get bored with these six tracks. Keep Shelly In Athens has a knack for the atmospheric sounds of tasteful layered upon layered synths and beats, and they know just how to construct it to make for a mind-boggling galactic journey. The sumptuous tension of this EP is not to be ignored, and the haunting vocals will only leave you with a chilling yearning for what this band has yet to reveal.

If you enjoy what you hear then I suggest you get your hands on Our Own Dream. This sexy-smooth EP is making headlines all over the world, and with good reason. Unfortunately, their small U.S. tour just ended, but with the rate they’re going, I wouldn’t be surprised if they made their way back here next year. Fingers crossed!

What's so good?

I present to you Keep Shelly In Athens: a Greece-based band taking the international music world by storm. Their newest single, “Lazy Noon,” (taken from 12″ Our Own Dream) is exactly what you think it is; a song that you listen to when you’re feeling lazy in the afternoon.

This downbeat-pop duo aren’t completely new to the music scene, but their newest EP, In Love With Dusk, will probably have a stronger draw than past releases. Why? Because it’s refreshing, smooth, super catchy and relaxing… and who doesn’t want that? The vocals are primarily female and definitely softly hypnotizing. There’s a ton of atmospheric synth-soaked effects, all of which are tastefully laid out to still decipher everything that’s going on within the song.

This breezy song ends as quickly as it begins, and it’ll probably leave you wanting more. It’s so easy to get lost in this song that you may find its ending to be quite abrupt. I suggest putting it on repeat a couple more times to get your fill. Keep Shelly In Athens also have some dance tracks to offer but you’ll just have to get their album on November 8th to experience those.
