What's so good?

For a second — just a split second — I thought Mr. Little Jeans had decided to cover TLC’s “Waterfalls.” And you can’t blame me: those lyrics sound might familiar! Turns out it’s actually a Paul McCartney original, also titled “Waterfalls.”

Which leaves me of two minds: 1) excitement about an unexpected new release from Mr. Little Jeans, and 2) slight disappointment that it isn’t a TLC cover. Sure McCartney is great and all, but I’m not personally familiar with his original :(

“Waterfalls” is the fourth song (and third original) we’ve heard from Mr. Little Jeans, clearly hinting at an upcoming album in the near future. While this one’s an enjoyable track, I’m hoping that the others pick up the pace a bit. Any more of this and I’ll probably lull myself to sleep.

What's so good?

My homegirl Isa initially put me onto Empress Of through her radio show, The Parked Car. In between Ciara tunes and hyphy jams (she’s in the Bay Area), my last visit to the show yielded this pleasant gem. Electronic but not quite uptempo, yet not a slow jam by any means, “Tristeza” is cerebral and spacey, and Lorely Rodriguez (Empress Of’s alter ego) keeps things wistful with her smoky voice.

A quick search on this site shows me Christina and Anibal are already up on the Empress train, and I guess I’m riding in the caboose. Well, no one has singled out this track yet, which hits a soft spot for me because it’s in Spanish.

If you’re still sleeping on Empress Of, head on over to her website, which honestly is part of what won me over. A complete Craigslist mimic may be trendy/hipster or what have you, but it is also completely hilarious, and in this case, very well done.

What's so good?

For someone who’s been somewhat behind the scenes in the past, 2013 is shaping up as a huge year for Sydney songstress KLP (Kristy Lee Peters). A noted DJ and guest vocalist (including “Caramel,” her recent collaboration with DCUP), she is featured on or has co-written as many as 20 tracks scheduled to see the light of day this year. Most importantly, she has just released her debut EP, Revolution, which is available through DCUP’s Chookie Music label.

It’s an extremely solid debut, with four tracks of well produced, catchy pop music. Lead single “Revolution” is perhaps the standout. It’s an upbeat, slinky track, with KLP’s fun, bouncy vocals perfectly suited to this type of music. It’s got a bit of attitude to it too, somewhat reminiscent of Lykke Li, and at times, Santigold.

As I touched on in my review of “Caramel,” her other vocation is as a facilitator for Heaps Decent (an initiative which arranges music workshops for disadvantaged kids) – just another reason for you to support this brilliant person. Revolution can be streamed in full on her SoundCloud.

What's so good?

I’m more than a little crazy, and I do little to hide the fact. A “fire runs through veins,” and when life tries to hold up a stop sign, I roar back at it like a lion. Befuddling life for a moment, I just keep on charging through, hellbent on my bizarre purpose. In high school that made me the “weird kid,” as an adult I’m a genial reboot of the bad boy — oh, and a holy living terror to date.

It’s why Florrie’s “Live a Little” is my mating call. I mean, how fucking boring is a dinner date? You want to show who you are: live a little with me. Get on a midnight bus ride to explore the temples of Myanmar, or get drunk off your ass and run down the streets of Portland in a pterodactyl costume. Trekking while avoiding typhoid or losing all your inhibitions in a downtown core tells me more about you than some BS spewed over candlelight.

There’s plenty of time for conversation later, I’m plenty smart to boot — but “I want to see the animal in you escape” until you’re “about to break.” And if you do break, well then panthers like Florrie and I will just keep prowling on.

What's so good?

While Fallulah has been turning heads since her 2010 debut album The Black Cat Neighbourhood, she didn’t land on my radar until yesterday. While I’ve clearly been missing out, better late than never, right?

Based out of Copenhagen, Maria Apetri draws easy comparisons to the likes of Lykke Li and Oh Land, two artists I quite enjoy. So, making the transition to her musical styling was an absolute breeze.

“Dried Out Cities” can be found on her recently-released album Escapism, available on iTunes via Denmark. Not entirely sure when this one’s going to hit US stores, but if you’re super keen on hearing the full album, I’m sure you’ll be able to figure something out…

What's so good?

Owl Eyes (aka Brooke Addamo) has had quite the journey, from reaching the Top 11 in the 2008 Australian Idol series to wowing audiences with her sublime cover of Foster the People’s “Pumped Up Kicks” in 2011. It seems not all hope was lost by her elimination in the Idol series, as she now has a set of 3 EPs under her belt and a debut album on the way titled Nightswim.

The lead single, “Closure,” is absolute pop magic. Keep in mind that this young lady is only 22 years old, yet she produces music way beyond her years — a testament to to her sheer determination and personal growth over the years. Glittering synths and angelic vocals over a deeply layered ethereal backdrop, not much more you could ask for from this single.

Nightswim is out April 19, 2013 and by the looks of things, it’s going to impress.

Little Boots have released another single, “Broken Record,” from their upcoming second studio album Nocturnes. I’m not gonna lie, Little Boots slipped off my radar for a few minutes, but rest assured they are back on it with “Motorway” and now “Broken Record.”

The track starts off with some soft strings, but don’t be fooled as it quickly heats up with heavy synths and electro beats.

Nocturnes is due out sometime in May, so keep your eyes and ears open for some new electro pop from Little Boots.

Avaberée – Lover of Mine

What's so good?

Brisbane’s Avaberée (aye-va-ber-ee) are a female trio, specializing in gorgeous harmonies and glowing pop music. Having supported a multitude of Australian artists recently (including Matt Corby, Emma Louise and Tin Sparrow), they’re about to take off on their own with the upcoming release of their debut EP (due out in the coming months).

The first single off the EP, “Lover of Mine,” was released late last year. Smooth and syrupy, the vocal interplay between the three girls is mind-blowing, and while the minimalistic accompaniment does add to the track, they hardly need it. It’s got that awesome quirky vibe that has served Kimbra so well in her march to superstardom.

Just last month, they followed up the single release with an accompanying video – a fairytale-ish visual which suits the track perfectly.

Shadows On Stars could never stay away for too long! This time they’re back with a cover in the form of Lykke Li’s “Little Bit.”

As soon as Shadows On Stars puts their name on anything, you know almost immediately that it’s going to be a galactic journey into a world of eletronica and beyond. This cover is no different. Imagine you’re drifting off into an atmospheric world of synths and robotic bass sounds. Add to that some soulful vocals and and a simple R&B beat, and you’ve got Shadows On Stars cover of “Little Bit.” It’s a little dark, a little bright, and a lot of awesome.

Perhaps Shadows On Stars should consider covering more songs. Their sound is so particular and innovative that I would only expect to be pleasantly surprised.

What's so good?

There’s something a little special about Cillie Barnes. She’s sweet, but at the same time, she has some real raw emotion and attitude about her, something I love when it come to female vocalists. “Brainwash” is the lead single from her debut Happy Valley, and it’s a delightful bit of indie pop.

The L.A . singer manages to encompass numerous genres within just one song, blending a mix of rock, hip-hop and folk to create an infectious debut single. As you’ll notice, it’s almost as if there are multiple singers within this one track, with Cillie managing to switch between multiple personas during the chorus and verses.

No release date for the debut album as of yet, but I’ll keep you posted!

What's so good?

I am not exactly sure what the lyrics mean on this track from the beautiful Berliner, Dillon, but let’s just focus in on her tone and the remixing job that the German DJ/producer Christian Strobe did on “Thirteen Thirtyfive.”

Holy cow! Very different from the original, but very awesome. A dance jam just in time for the freakin’ weekend.

The track is categorized on SoundCloud as “nu disco trap,” and while I’m not even quite sure what that means, I will agree with the nu disco part. I’m not here to split hairs over categorizing genres, but simply want to bring some KY for your eargasms. That is all.

Marial Maher is the leading lady of Brooklyn-based indie pop collective Seasick Mama. The titular track off her debut EP, Dead Like Money (produced with help by Mark Turrigiano), begins as a faceoff between Trent Reznor’s industrial pop sound and Portishead’s hankering electronic vibes. It quickly mellows out as it transitions into a groovy bass line and filtered vocals evocative of early 90s alternative rock with a modern pop twist.

She then breaks it down with an infectiously catchy chorus, but not before asking the important question, “Do I have to pay for this!?” While she’s not referring to your purchase of her new EP (since the song’s lyrics refer to the newfound rigors of fame), the question remains: why wouldn’t you want to?

TOKiMONSTA has the potential to be the heir to DJ Shadow’s throne. Her mastery of instrumental hip-hop infused with an empathic warmness — like on “Creature Dreams“ and new single, “Go With It” – soars into the future of sound like in the best days of DJ Shadow. And if she’s DJ Shadow, MNDR is her Little Dragon. Music trivia nerds: remember Shadow’s “Scale It Back (Ft. Little Dragon (Robotaki Remix)“? Oh yeah, this track is that good.

Her decision to team up with MNDR has given TOKiMONSTA’s track the vocal styling necessary to pull off as anthemic a chorus as I’ve heard yet this year. MNDR delivers a knockout verse, evoking a protective warmth and power that feels just right to shout at the world.

But another side of “Go With It” strikes me as a bombastic version of The Tough Alliance vs. Taken By Trees’ mashup, “Taken Too Young.” Picture a pissed off, matriarchal bird wrapping its wing around a child expecting to fly for the first time in robust headwinds; and now let’s say that fowl scene was transferred to the dance floor in the foul parts of my mind… that’s how I’d describe the essence of this track.

What's so good?

Charli XCX’s “You (Ha Ha Ha)” is already going down as one of my favorite singles of the year. I raved about it back in January when we covered it here on Indie Shuffle, but the remixes, notably Goldroom‘s, left me a little wanting. I found it inexplicably perplexing that remix artists kept removing what I felt was the core of the song: her sample of Gold Panda‘s “You.”

So, when MS MR announced they were taking a stab at the song, my spider sense started to tingle. After all, of anyone on the scene, these 90s/Oughties explorers and makers of “Hurricane” and “Bones” are perfect companions for Charli XCX’s vision. I mean, you could consider this track a gift of thanks for Charli XCX’s remix of “Bones” (which helped further catapult the band into the indie stratosphere).

MS MR took this through all of its potential landmines and helicoptered it into the echelon of outstanding Charli XCX reworks. I’m talking about the gold standard of Hackman‘s and Balam Acab‘s takes on “Nuclear Seasons,” which I listened to last year on endless repeat. Besides the masterful slowing down of the track, my favorite new part is when they strip her voice to almost acoustic level in a way that’s reminiscent of that glorious time Lykke Li performed “I’m Good, I’m Gone“ with a megaphone.

At only 26 years of age, she has consistently produced some of the most interesting indie rock out there. From the upbeat to the downright depressing, she shows over and over again that good looks aren’t just about being pretty: it’s about the music, too.

And yes, that really is a great side-boob shot.

There’s no denying that Little Dragon’s amazing music would not be the same without lead singer Yukimi Nagano.

You may be led to believe that she is Japanese, but surprisingly enough, Yukimi is actually Swedish. Born to a Japanese father and a Swedish-American mother in 1982, her success hasn’t been limited to just Little Dragon: last year she provided the vocals on SBTRKT’s amazing single, “Wildfire.”

Following her quick ascendance to fame and subsequent flop on Saturday Night Live, Lana Del Rey has managed to keep her face in the limelight. And it’s not just for music.

Lana is now serving as the face of H&M, cropping up on billboard worldwide. They’re pretty hard to miss at this point, but one thing is undeniable: she makes a good model.

Zooey Deschanel is famous for a number of reasons: 1) she was married to Death Cab and The Postal Services’ front-man Ben Gibbard; 2) she’s a popular actress with films such as Elf and (500) Days Of Summer under her belt; 3) she’s the lead singer of the duo She & Him.

Joined by singer-songwriter M.Ward, Zooey Deschanel has been touring as part of She & Him for a number of years now. They’ve released three full-length studio albums (one of which was entirely Christmas related).

Oh, and to top that all off, she’s incredibly cute.

I’m a bit sad that I only just stumbled upon Dillon, but the masses will discover this captivating singer-songwriter and electronic artist from Berlin sooner than later.

“Thirteen Thirtyfive,” released at the end of 2011 on This Silence Kills, is raw and wistful. The sound lures us in and exists at the cross-section of other notable female musicians. There’s a resemblance to the musical and visual aesthetic of CocoRosie, the vocal plays of Regina Spektor, and a command of innocence akin to Lykke Li.

Aside from the fact that it’s quite good, I decided to share this track right now because we can eagerly look forward to a collaboration with Telefon Tel Aviv coming soon.

What's so good?

Talented youngster Elizabeth Rose has been “one-to-watch” for a while now, but it will be very difficult to keep her in this category for much longer given her continued rise. Since her single “Ready” was released in January, she’s been mixing with a number of significant players in the electronic music industry – working alongside Flight Facilities and Frames, and touring with Chairlift (as well as her own headline tour).

She’s also done a lot of work with British producer Sinden, with the collaboration resulting in her latest single “Again.” Opening to a bass-heavy beat, the track gets into a real groove-inducing anthem. Given the recent company she’s been keeping, it’s not a surprise that the production is first-class.

This is another step-up for the Sydney local. Rose has always had the talent, but in terms of end-product, it’s incredible to see how far she’s come.

What's so good?

Probably the most intense song I’ve posted in a long-ass time. The original version of “DJ Ease My Mind” wasn’t exactly the most upbeat dance song, but this rendition by Twin Shadow is absolutely gut wrenching.

Gone is all the percussion; gone the acceleration toward something grant. All that remains is Niki’s voice and the sad, sad guitar of Twin Shadow’s George Lewis Jr.

The two bands are about to go on tour together…hopefully this isn’t an indication of what the live show will be like. We’d want some fun, dammit!

What's so good?

As most of us already know, Beck’s quest to make sweet music with as many indie artists as possible continues to prosper, graciously supplying us many tracks and albums that some will argue are better than the last. One track that has not surfaced the Indie Shuffle musical archives is his take on Lykke Li’s 2010 hit, “Get Some.”

Coined as the “second official remix” of “Get Some,” this version of Lykke Li’s praised track gives us slightly more danceable grooves with erratic beat pulsations and weird vocal arrangements. It has become standard for Beck to toy with his tracks, adding strange workings here an there, but what I find pleasantly surprising is the bluesy, funk elements suitably intertwined with Lykke Li’s Swedish swagger.

What's so good?

Hello, Shufflers! Today’s SOTD comes from New York group School of Seven Bells, throwing down an ethereal version of Lil Wayne’s track “How To Love” (listen to the original here).

Although the the rapper’s version definitely showcases the softer side of the artist, the shoegaze-electronic duo surpasses even that with their plush synths and whispery vocals. The melody is infinitely deep, and Alejandra Deheza’s clean voice gracefully compliments the realistic tone of Lil Wayne’s lyrics. The track is very JJ-esque in their dreamy take on hip-hop, something that is always a win in my book.

What's so good?

With so many illustrious female singer/songwriters going around, it takes something special to grab my attention. Young Sydney-sider Phebe Starr has done just that with her new track “Alone with You.” Having travelled the globe over the past two years, she’s back home in Australia working on new material.

There are a lot of girls with nice voices, but Starr’s is more than that. It’s powerful without being intrusive, it’s haunting without being depressing, and it’s diverse, rising and falling throughout the track. “Alone with You” isn’t a simple track, but there’s only a few elements used, highlighting her vocal strength. Aching synth chords and stirring drums are all that’s required to complete this ballad.

She’s already received a number of glowing reviews from some of Australia’s most recognised music critics, and with such considerable talent on her side, she’s bound to receive a lot more.

What's so good?

Good on Starbucks. They’re releasing an album full of Fleetwood Mac covers, including appearances by MGMT, Gardens & Villa, Tame Impala and many more.

So far the highlight appears to be this cover of the 1976 B-side “Silver Springs.” A haunting, minimal cover, the song rests heavily on Lykke Li’s recognizable vocals.

And in case you’re wondering, the MGMT single sucks so bad that it’s basically impossible to listen through the whole thing.

What's so good?

Swedish chanteuse Sarah Assbring, aka El Perro Del Mar, throws us a curveball with her latest track “Innocence is Sense,” a first taste from her yet-to-be-released fourth album, Pale Fire.

Mesmerizing me almost instantly, this new song takes her usual Swede-pop attitude and shifts it toward a more tense, ominous direction. It’s haunting, with dramatically ethereal synths, ghostlike chanting and sweeping electronics.

The accompanying video for “Innocence is Sense” is a deeply interpretive and stylistically symbolic ode to a 1970’s indie noir/horror film aesthetic. The escalading synths combined with subdued visual hues and creepy hypnotics allow her usual vocals to expand into more experimental territory.

The change in direction is yet another thrilling step in El Perro Del Mar’s ever changing sound and sees her reclaim her position as one of the most important females working in Swedish music today. Take a gander at the video for “Innocence is Sense” below and see for yourself.

What's so good?

I didn’t think it was possible to make the Velvet Underground sound even more badass than they normally do. But Yacht’s cover of the 1966 Nico-led classic is pure magic – synthy blips and and thrumming back beat add a cool modernity to the smokey, sexy track (following their cover of Bridgette Fontaine’s 1969 song “Le Goudron”).

This version remains largely close to the original, with a more upbeat tempo and a layered sonic feel. So, now when you dress up like Nico and dance around your room, you have a tune to go with your moves. I mean… who does that? I don’t. Ahem.
