When you think of chilled hip-hop with an electronic jazz tinge, you instantly think of Oslo, Norway right?

Ivan Avenue is a young man out of Scandinavia making some refreshing raps that go easy on the pretension. “Portals” is buttery electro goodness; Ivan raps very well over his own beat, and creates a track that’s the equivalent of a sunset joint on a cool, breezy beach. Plus he asks for a 10-foot hater-free radius, and I think we can all say that is a pretty universal life goal.

What serves as the cherry on this rap sundae for me is that Ivan doesn’t beat you over the head with the throwback stick. When cats like Joey Bada$$ and others make it a point to make you know they are “bringing back” the spirit of the old-school or whatever revivalist bullshit rhetoric they’re selling themselves with, it is cool to see someone influenced by that golden age mythology just do their thing and keep it moving. I’m very curious to see where Ivan Ave takes it from here.

Chicago’s Chance The Rapper has built a buzz for himself in the past 16 months with his deft lyricism and melodic inflections. His latest tape, Acid Rap, seems to have cemented him as an up-and-coming rapper with commercial promise. I’ve yet to do my due diligence on young Chance but even a surface skim shows substance. It’s nice to see a young cat making an attempt at being creative without rehashing the past completely.

“Paranoia,” a bonus track on Acid Rap, is a collaboration with beat-scene wonderkid Nosaj Thing — and it’s pretty amazing. I hope the rest of the tape is as good. Over a brooding, slumping beat Chance starts and stops, going from an exhausted sing-song to a feverish urgency and back. It’s also really interesting to listen to the track in the context of a young person from Chicago rapping about his hometown, a city that has been plagued with extreme levels of youth violence for years.

It’s come out in interviews and articles that Chance’s latest tape was pretty self explanatory: many of the raps where recorded on acid. He goes a bit further to explain that his process would sometimes include freestyling on acid as a way to establish the skeleton of his tracks before fine-tuning them. I love this but I hope it doesn’t lead shittier rappers to think they can snort heroin and make some dope tracks.

“No Ordinary Love” is a new slow jam from an up-and-coming London-based R&B artist AZEKEL, whose flow is beautifully disarming while his lyrics reveal an understated intensity. It reminds me a bit of Frank Ocean.

The track is about the relationship between a father and son, a twist on the more traditional R&B love ballad. I’m really digging the mellifluous vibes dancing along the Sade sample. It’s produced by Adelight, another British artist/songwriter who specialises in soulful grooves. Overall, this is a great production that you can download for free.

Holy mother of God. Seven listens in and I still can’t take this song off repeat. From start to finish, it comes across as an absolute masterpiece.

Unkwon is a little-known producer based out of Denmark, and while we haven’t featured him before, it’s no surprise that he’s decided to tackle Copenhagen-based band When Saints Go Machine. They are neighbors, after all.

With this remix he has managed to transform “Love And Respect” (the opening track to their new album Infinity Pool) from a heavy hip-hop track into a chilled out and percussive electronic single. Coupled with the rhyming of Killer Mike, this one comes out as one of my favorite tracks in the last couple months, barely taking a leg up over the original.

Infinity Pool is out May 13th via !K7 Records.

There is nothing better than showing up to work, turning on your computer, checking your SoundCloud stream, and finding a brand new Clams Casino track. And when the track is a collaboration with MF DOOM, you know it’s going to be a good day.

The track is called “Bookfiend,” and it’s a super laid-back beat thrown down as only Clams Casino can do.  It’s filled with ambient soundscapes with a hip-hop soul, with some soulful rhymes from MF DOOM mixed in — the perfect pair.  The track has a bit of a jazz feel to it with its mellowness and the way DOOM’s voice melds with beat.  I certainly hope we’ll see some more of these two working together because this definitely works.

If you’re anything like me, then “Bookfiend” might be the perfect way to start off your Monday, nice and slow.

Back in January, we premiered a track called “T W A (Till We Arrive)” by Texas MCs Tonio and Iroc Mics. Yesterday, James Blake uploaded a couple surprise tracks to his Tumblr, including this fantastic collaboration with Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA.

The song is set to be included as the 4th track on Blakes’ upcoming studio album Overgrown. Naturally, a sophomore release comes with non-trivial pressure (particularly given that his self-titled debut set the standard quite high).

Don’t know where this gem has been hidding, but we’re sure glad we stumbled on London-based Eric Lau.

His lo-fi hip-hop productions conjure up nostalgic memories of musical rendezvous with J Dilla records and chilled out evenings. There’s a vibrant selection of tunes on his SoundCloud that will have you melting into the wide open space of Lau’s good taste.

“Everytime” is a stand out R&B track, with great vocals from Rahel, and I just can’t get enough. It’s silky smooth, infectious, insanely bouncy and short enough that it’ll make you want to hit replay over and over again.

It feels like forever ago when I first hyped AJ Rice, a hard-working North Carolina producer who’s worked with Lil B and proudly represents all things BASED. Back then, I couldn’t get enough of AJ’s first solo release, MiDNiGHT, dim LiGHT. Now, I can’t get enough of his latest venture — BASEDWORLD UNITE.

The compilation album features 28 tracks from a total of 24 different producers, including Keyboard Kid, Lou Pocus, and of course AJ Rice. “Be You” is the album’s closing track (if you don’t count bonus cuts), and is a worthy finishing touch for what has to be one of the more dynamic releases of 2013. You may not know every producer’s name on BASEDWORLD UNITE, but you don’t have to in order to enjoy all the deep vibes.

The compilation album features 28 tracks from a total of 24 different producers, including Keyboard Kid, Lou Pocus, and of course AJ Rice. “Be You” is the album’s closing track (if you don’t count bonus cuts), and is a worthy finishing touch for what has to be one of the more dynamic releases of 2013. You may not know every producer’s name on BASEDWORLD UNITE, but you don’t have to in order to enjoy all the deep vibes.

The kids in Oz sure know how to make sweet jams. Here’s one from upcoming producer illstrtd, just another 22-year-old making beats in his bedroom. While illstrtd hasn’t really hit the scene yet, he’s gotten exposure on blogs like the 405 and Crayon Beats. I thought 405 described him pretty well back in December with “Clams Casino meets Washed Out.” Take a listen and decide for yourself.

This track, “Torture,” is a great example of his hip-hop/chillwave concoction: darkly sweet vocals mixed to R&B beats that’ll serenade you into the most melancholic of moods. Just wait till 1:10, where drawn out and slow beats that explode with ethereal vocals and chill you right to the bone. Also of note is “Thank You,” which prominently features a Christina Aguilera sample and slightly reminds me of Jason Burns.

So, is illstrtd the next big producer out of Australia? He hasn’t put out a track in the last two months and there’s no word of an EP, so we don’t know his plans yet. I recommend you listen to more on SoundCloud then go show him some love over on Facebook and Twitter. Maybe it’ll give him that push to keep putting out wicked tracks like this. All it takes is a bit of support to see the change you want to see to hear more of the music you want to hear…

Like this damn nice Aaliyah remix from a 16-year-old beatmaker out of Vienna named Felix Nyajo. It’s a speedy/soulful version of Aaliyah, like waves that crash on shore at night. Peaceful and soothing, but kinda scary with their energy.

Felix’s got a free EP, FIELDS, off of his own label, Take Care Recordings. Apparently the EP made Idol Mag’s Top 5, alongside James Blake and The Weeknd. Pretty good company to be keeping. Check out what they had to say:

“Full of warmth, Fields comprises of a beat that sounds like its tripping over itself (in a good way) and a relaxed trumpet that provides glimpses into a lazy summer’s day in the city. Although the internet currently has little on Salute himself, a quick listen through his Soundcloud reveals a varied portfolio of songs that certainly show a lot of promise.”

You know the common phrase, “what are friends for?” My friends are for making sure that I have the most refreshing music to come out of Brooklyn, New York at all times, so I have to give Adrian Lau’s manager and acquaintance, Asher Conniff, 1000 praises for delivering Lau’s music. Seriously, Adrian Lau’s lyrical delivery is commensurable to breathing. It’s a natural approach that’s expressed effortlessly.

Lau’s “Blue Dreams” (produced by Harry Fraud) is one of four songs in Lau’s body of work that dispatch mind-boggling lyrics, ambient vibes, and chill-hop beats. Lau is slated to appear on Riff Raff’s upcoming video and mixtape, Neon Vibes.

One of my favorite and integral components of curating music is the artist’s ability to fashion a connection between their lyrics and imagery. Adrian Lau is definitely not a slouch in respect to collective creativity and visuals. Just check out the visual art for “Blue Dreams.”

I’ve been feasting on J Dilla’s Donuts for the last few weeks, and missing beats that just make me sit back and chill the hell out. Good music always brings me back to my center, which is why I’m digging Gloam.

This is a lovely instrumental titled “OrionOrchids” by the Vancouver producer. Whether Gloam crafted this beat in three hours or three weeks, I know a dope track when I hear one. Also, I’m feeling the moniker.

Get to know Gloam’s SoundCloud and Bandcamp if you’re interested in good instrumentals. Nothing is too harsh. He’s not catering to purists, but at the same time, his experimental beats are quite good. Pretty sure most hip-hop/electronica fans will like “OrionOrchids.”

Checked the archives, and this is his first appearance on the site. I don’t think they give medals for that sort of thing, but they should.

While walking home from the train station the other night, I felt compelled to listen to Nujabes’ Spiritual State. For the unfamiliar, Nujabes was a 36-year-old Japanese producer who lost his life in a car accident in 2010. Spiritual State is an album released just under two years after his death, featuring the beatmaker’s previously unreleased material.

Nujabes holds a special place in my heart. There’s such life in his beats, and listening to his breezy, effortless instrumentals reminds me of my humanity. If that was enough, Spiritual State also features some truly elevated hip-hop. One of those cuts is titled “City Lights.” It was the first song I ever hyped for Indie Shuffle, which is something you’ll need to know for next week’s test.

“City Lights” features a Virginia MC named Substantial, who also appears on the track featured above, ”Waiting For The Clouds.” Man, oh man, do Nujabes and Substantial go together like cats and naps.

Quick tip: listening to this track twice a day is a great way to combat Badtasteinrapitosis.

Right out of the gate, this track begins with some high caliber “Pressure.”  The music blasts from your speakers, carrying the lyrics “I’ve been knee deep in trouble/Trying to staying afloat ” straight to your frontal cortex, demanding your attention.  But what’s so brilliant about this track is it doesn’t feel the urge to keep that energy up throughout.

Instead, the track rises and falls, utilizing some very Diplo-esque drops to simulate the real life pressure of a long seething anxiety, rather than a moment of straight fight or flight syndrome. Featuring no fewer than two drops, the song segments itself to fool the listener into expecting a relief that will never come.

The ‘pressure’ is never specified, which strengthens the track even more by allowing the listener to adopt his or her own histories to the track. But what is clear is that whatever that pressure is — be it hard fought for goals, the law or the consequences of poor choices — it’s keeping the singer disconnected, unable to love someone he clearly would “in another lifetime.” His emotive singing and this style of lyricism reminds me of Stateless in all the best ways.

This track was actually introduced onto the web about a year ago, but the band allowed the song to flow to listeners organically, trying to see the way music spreads in this day of the indie blogosphere. I remember reading about it back in October on the Erratic Man, but it wasn’t until Disco Naïveté pointed out their new YouTube video that it stuck enough for me to review.

It was only a matter of time before I hyped another talented Dallas artist. Antonio Topete (otherwise known as Tonio) is a rapper, singer, and producer — at least according to his Twitter. I haven’t heard much of his singing. As for the rapping, color me impressed.

“Coolin Everyday” is produced by Bahwee, another artist I’ll need to start paying attention to this year. The track feels from a similar cloth of big names like Big Sean and Mac Miller. Something about the flow, and I mean that as a good thing. The beat’s on point, leaving Tonio plenty of space to moonwalk through his bars. He sounds at home on the mic, which is like 85 percent of what I think it takes to make even a small splash in the game.

Tonio should drop an EP sometime this month. Something to keep an ear and eye out for, perhaps.

I’d imagine this song best played at a shady night club somewhere just outside of Berlin. Don’t ask me why. Something about those vocals in the background and deep bass remind me of shouting in the dark on a basement dance floor. Vague whispers to nobody special, cigarettes lit up in a freezing cold dark. But, alas, it was made by a producer from sunny San Diego.

The real killer beat kicks in at 2:00; the noise will pierce your speakers. This is a song with lots of kick to really enjoy a night out at a Saturday house party; it makes sense, then, that the artist is still in college. Different Sleep is Rafa Alvarez, a 19-year-old producer from San Diego who’s currently studying music business in Chicago. The track comes off a compilation mix called West in Dust. You can download it for free on Bandcamp.
