What's so good?

Oh my, oh my! I’ve been sitting on this song for a while now, waiting for a legit upload on Soundcloud so that we could share it. Finally, FBi Radio has come to the rescue, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs new single “Sacrilege” is now available for our enjoyment.

The song comes as their first single off the album Mosquito, set to be released April 16th. One listen and it’ll probably come as no surprise that it’s getting plenty of radio play. Not only is it original and powerful — it’s super exciting to see a band living up to the unusually high expectations.

Fingers crossed that subsequent releases are just as awesome.

What's so good?

“Breathing Underwater” is part of a new era of Metric songs (post-Fantasies) that’s about escaping off the island of you, and bursting through the artificial boundaries that define yourself from the rest of the world. I remember when I saw Emily Haines perform in this intimate little garage for 40 people or so in Seattle during the Live it Out tour, and the exhaustion of carrying the sentiment of songs like “Empty” was palpable within her.

There is a point where being mired in the ocean of your own pain, you might just grow gills and swim in that ocean like its reality. That idea for Metric carries back to 2009 and can be found in the music video documentary for the single “Help, I’m Alive” (I’ve watched that some 400+ times to this day–its beautiful). In it, Emily discusses escaping to Buenos Aires to find a life uncomplicated and the freedom that journey transpired.

It took me awhile to get to the same place as Emily, and therefore I didn’t quite connect with the Fantasies and Synthetica catalogue until now. But at the right moment in my life, comes this spectacular remix by MNDR that’ll take any Metric fan and surface them out of their own ocean through chillstep currents, blasting them right into Emily’s stratosphere.

Way back when, Stars enlisted the help of their (former) Arts & Crafts label mates to pull together what I maintain is still one of the best remix albums to date, Do You Trust Your Friends. So, I was pretty confident that Eight And A Half would do a good job as well.

Which begs the question, who are Eight And A Half? This is the first time I’ve heard of them, but they boast members from Broken Social Scene and The Stills. I’m having a hard time figuring out whether they literally have 8.5 members — blurry photos seem to indicate this might be the case, so let’s pretend just for fun.

The next question that raises is how many folks were actually involved in this remix. It’s a question I’m generally curious about when it comes to one “full band” remixing another. Was it just one member? Or did they literally sit down and flush this thing out together?

Regardless of how they did it, I’m quite enjoying this take on the original. “Backlines” was of course featured on Stars’ most-recent album The North, released on ATO Records. In my mind it was always missing a little something, and ultimately this version leaves my eardrums more fulfilled. Perhaps you’ll agree.

Listen up Shufflers, I am so excited to introduce you all to Hospitality (if you haven’t heard them yet). This group from Brooklyn is without a doubt a cut above the rest, and I’m currently obsessed with their self-titled album.

If you’re looking for some eclectically sophisticated and fun indie pop, you’ve come to the right post. Hospitality has encapsulated a truly unique approach to the indie pop genre that only the best could conjure up. It’s light-hearted, intricate, zany and truly endearing. From the first track to the last, I am almost positive that you will be completely captivated by their utterly fresh take on a genre that, as we know, can be so played out. I’m currently really enjoying Ending People. Hailing from Denver, Colorado, their self-described sound is “dark party-wave.” Yep, that sounds about right.

Their single, “Beat Of My Heart,” is a creepy yet sensual track that’s perfect for a chilled out setting. The mix of dangling guitars and sneaky bass against a lush synthesizer, topped with a steady beat and shaky vocals, makes for an impressive genre-bending style that Ending People call their own. While listening to this song, I hear a little influence from multiple decades, but it’s the execution that brings the modern touch. It’s as if Ending People is dancing around multiple genres while being committed to creating their own.

Ending People’s newest album, Fill Your Lungs, was just released. I hope you open your mind and ears wide enough to appropriately absorb the soothing infectiousness that is Ending People.

What's so good?

Mad props to Metric for putting up pretty much their entire discography on Soundcloud. It means we can flash all the way back to 2001, when Metric released their debut album Grow Up And Blow Away.

The album wasn’t actually the first that I heard by the band — that honor goes to Old World Underground. But, it was pleasantly surprising to me to find a great back catalogue from the band, including this gem of an opener “Grow Up And Blow Away.”

For lack of any other new songs today, I hope you enjoy this one from way back when.

What's so good?

Josh and Mer have been on the up and up this whole year. This time around, they sent me their single, “Porcelain,” and it’s a beautiful, new wave approach to modern orchestral pop.

As the song begins, it’s a delicate start — as if it really were as delicate as porcelain. The acoustic guitar and piano lend a soft touch, and the vocals are airy and heartfelt, and remain that way throughout the song. The instruments, on the other hand, continually build up their intensity until they take on a balancing act of hard and soft. There’s electric guitar dancing around the piano while the piano tip toes on top of the rest. We can’t forget about Josh and Mer’s harmonies; they’re sweet enough to put any baby to sleep.

With all of their constant hard work, Josh and Mer deserve all the recognition they can get. They’re even running a Kickstarter campaign to fund their newest music video adventure through the kind donations of their fans. Help ‘em out! Remember, a little goes a long way!

What's so good?

Sydney’s Tokyo Denmark Sweden are one of those groups who keep popping up all over my life – supporting a band I’ve gone to see (including RÜFÜS and Parachute Youth recently), on the radio, and on my Facebook and Twitter feed.

Their music is just as eye-catching (or ear-catching), and they’re due to release their debut EP next month. The EP’s first single “Little Quarters” already received plenty of local web and radio attention, and their second offering is bound for the same treatment.

“Lights Out” is upbeat and punchy, highlighted by the group’s savvy production and Amy Pes’ catchy vocals. This is a group who you’d class as a “Party Starter” given the abundance of driving synth and percussion lines.

With plenty of support already, their EP is bound to be well received, with the group about to embark on a national tour to celebrate.

Stumped again, and returning to the archives of awesome.

Released on the 2009 album Fantasies, Metric’s “Gimme Sympathy” poses an interesting question: who would you rather be? The Beatles, or The Rolling Stones?

For more, the answer’s pretty clear…The Beatles. If you’re wondering why, I’ve included an image at the bottom of this post that should demonstrate exactly why.

Even if you disagree with me on that (in which case, you’re wrong), you can probably relate that this is a good song.

What's so good?

To date, three singles have been released of Stars’ upcoming album The North: “The Theory Of Relativity,” “Hold On When You Get Love And Let Go When You Give It” and now “Backlines.”

Clearly the third and most recent is my favorite, as none of the prior tracks made it to the esteemed status of Song of the Day.

That said, I’m still not blown away. The songs are vaguely interesting indie pop ballads, but seem to be lacking much of the concept that was so special about their 2004 album Set Yourself On Fire.

I guess we’ll have to wait until September 4th to get the full picture…

I don’t know about you, but the new Metric album had little to no impact on my audio-life. On the slip side, their 2003 album Old World Underground, Where Are You Now? found itself playing over and over again.

Today, for some reason or another, I wound up bumping into the track “I.O.U.,” the opening track to the aforementioned album. It took roughly 10 seconds before I decided that I needed to dredge this one back up and present it to you as today’s Song of the Day.

Hope you enjoy this little injection of female-punk-power-pop music.

Movie Soundtrack: Scott Pilgrim vs. The World Ft. Broken Social Scene, Metric + More

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is great for so many different reasons. I think the main reason is it’s the place where comics, music, video-games, and movies meet. Based on the hit Scott Pilgrim graphic-novel series by Bryan Lee O’Mally, the movie brought to life one of the most relatable characters to every grace the page of a comic book.

Played by indie hero Michael Cera, Scott Pilgrim is an uber-slacker who plays bass in a band, loves playing video games, and mooches off his friends due to his lack of a job (we all know someone like this, or find ourselves leading a similar lifestyle). His precious little Canadian slacker life is thrown upside down though when he meets Ramona Flowers, played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and is forced to defeat all of her seven evil ex-boyfriends if he hopes to be with her.

Chock full of video game, comic, and indie music references, this was the ultimate geek-fest of a flick for those of us who grew up reading Marvel comics, playing Street Fighter II, and wanting to be in a band of our own.

Not only was this a great movie, but it also had an awesome soundtrack, featuring the talents of Canadian indie legends like Broken Social Scene, Metric, and Plumtree. It also featured the fictitious band Sex Bob-omb from the movie, with actual tracks played by the cast members. It was nice to see such a great soundtrack to accompany the movie, since the comic books were so heavily influenced by music.

So check out the movie, and if you haven’t read them, go back and read all seven of the graphic novels. I promise it will be worth your while.

Sugar-coated electro pop? Yeah, Dragonette’s new track “Rocket Ship” is full of that.

The Canadian trio’s new album Bodyparts is due some time in September, and this single is meant to get us excited.

Clearly, lead singer Martina Sorbara is aiming for a bit of pop glory here. While I doubt she’ll hit the status of Metric’s Emily Haines, I think this band has a lot more up their sleeves. I expect more singles soon!

Little Scout – Go Quietly

Brisbane’s Little Scout have taken some time to be properly recognised for their music, but are now receiving the praise they deserve. Having released two independent EPs, their debut album Take Your Light saw them support the likes of First Aid Kit and Belle and Sebastian (as well as their own national tour). Now, they’re back with a new single which I think is their best material to date.

Written with Scott Bromiley (of the John Steel Singers) and recorded by the band’s drummer Miro Mackie, “Go Quietly” was mixed by Lars Stalfors (of the Mars Volta fame) in L.A. – Stalfors had earlier approached the band after hearing them on Triple J Unearthed.

A sharp 2:43, the track packs a bit of a punch. Differing slightly from their usual sweetness, “Go Quietly” has a bit of sass to it. Melissa Tickle’s sickly-sweet vocals weave their way through a maze of fuzzed-out guitar and driving percussion.

I’m really excited about this new direction from Little Scout. While I really liked Take Your Light, I really love “Go Quietly.”

Metric have gone and done something unusual in releasing their entire new album on Soundcloud. That’s right, folks! You can stream the entire thing here. Prior to this, a couple singles had been released, but I thought I’d feature the album’s namesake, “Synthetica.”

Having given the album one run through already, I can confirm that it’s definitely a very solid listen — probably one taken in as a complete work rather than on a single-by-single basis.

When I was 19, I was readying myself for finals and frat parties. But Australian singer-songwriter Emma Louise has taken a slightly different approach to life, because at 19 she is crafting some amazingly mature, deep, beautiful music. Recently featured as our SOTD for her single “Boy,” this still-teen from down under is making some promising moves.

This track is actually from a 2011 EP, Full Hearts & Empty Rooms; after hearing “Boy,” I came across this song and was instantly captivated by its seedy underbelly. Where “Boy” is delicate and demure, “Jungle” brings a purring strength and confidence. From the first beat, the track carries a momentum and insight which is amazing, considering this was her first release. Listening to her music, immediately I zoom back to my first listen of Florence or Kimbra.

Emma Louise, we expect big things. Please don’t disappoint – although we don’t think you will.

Catcall – The Warmest Place

Australian female pop music has been overshadowed in recent years by the New Zealand juggernauts of Kimbra and Ladyhawke. Australia however, has a (not so) secret weapon to rival the aforementioned sensations. After initially starting out in punk band Kiosk, Catherine Kelleher, who goes by the moniker Catcall, has released her debut album The Warmest Place.

Four years have passed since Catcall’s self-released EP Anniversary – a hip-hop infused first offering which lead to her being signed to Ivy League Records (home to Alpine, Cloud Control and Deep Sea Arcade). Since then, her music has developed into evocative, well-produced dance pop with splashes of her old swagger shining through.

The Warmest Place is overflowing with potency and confidence, fusing influences together with catchy hooks and solid song-writing. Compiled from 2009 to 2011, it features the co-writing, mixing and production work of some of Australia’s finest, and the results are spectacular.

Current single “Satellites” oozes 80s dream-pop influence, with her drifting vocals towering above a variety of groove-driven synth lines. “Swimming Pool,” released in 2010 to a top spot on Hypem, was universally acclaimed for its incredibly poignant, moving character. “Shoulda Been” is perhaps the highlight for me. Upbeat and terrifically catchy, it maintains Catcall’s brimming self-assurance in her music. It’s a sublimely varied album, with the funky “Art Star” contrasting delightfully with the determined and deliberate “August.”

Four years have definitely seen Catcall mature as an artist, and The Warmest Place will no doubt see her ascend in recognition. This is a truly assured debut and will no doubt be much-celebrated locally and abroad.

What's so good?

In my humble opinion, Gigamesh has some of the most beautiful indie rock remixes out there. I think a lot of this is owed to his liberal use of synth arpeggios and chord progressions, something I’m a total sucker for. At least, that’s what did it for me on this song.

His prior works have included remixes of Foster the People, Grouplove and Lykke Li. These were all awesome in their own rights, so its of little surprise to me that this one rings true to my ears.

Ladyhawke’s “Sunday Drive” will be released on her upcoming album Anxiety, due for release May 29th via Modular.

TV Soundtrack: Vampire Diaries Season 1, Ft. Metric, Vampire Weekend + More

With the popularity of the Twilight series in both the box offices and the bookstore, it was only a matter of time before we found vampires creeping around in their very own TV series. In fact, we got two. While HBO’s True Blood came first, the CW’s Vampire Diaries had its finger closer to the pulse of the indie music blogosphere.

Such was the case in Season 1. While vampire diehards got their dose of girl (Elena) meeting dreamy vampire (Stefan), and all the drama that follows a relationship between someone who is alive and someone who is dead, fans of indie music got Metric, The Temper Trap, Surfer Blood, and even some techno from Holland’s own Tiesto.

And what vampire TV show soundtrack would be complete without Vampire Weekend? It’s definitely a no-brainer. I hope the music supervisor for Breaking Dawn Part 2 also comes to that realization. More Vampire Weekend is a plus in any universe.

So whether you are a fan of vampires or not, definitely check out the musical highlights from Season 1 below, and check out the new season of Vampire Diaries Thursday nights on CW.

What's so good?

Josh And Mer are bolting full steam ahead with their debut album, Planet Music, and now their debut video for their single, “Mind Control.” It’s obvious that they’re onto something unique and whimsical when you listen to their music, but this video has taken their individual creativity to another level.

While it’s only three minutes long, this video is so aesthetically pleasing and creepy that you should expect to get sucked into it from start to finish. The eerie vibe is unavoidable, and of course the theme of the video perfectly suits the track, projecting a life of reclusive imprisonment and forced worship. Are Josh and Mer trying to tell us something? Do they know something we do not? Figure that out for yourself by watching their otherworldly video for “Mind Control.”

What's so good?

What the hell happened to The Twelves? The Brazilian duo was hot as fire a few years back, pumping out one gem of a remix after another (one of my favorite was their remix of Something Good Can Work by TDCC). They even played Coachella back in 2011.

Since then? Virtual radio silence. Even their Facebook page is completely barren. R.I.P.

You know what? It doesn’t matter. Metric just announced that they’re going to release a new album Synthetica in June, and that’s solace enough for me. Until then, we’ve got this ~2009 remix to keep us afloat (not to mention a vast discography…).

What's so good?

Let’s all warmly welcome Josh and Mer from Portland, Oregon. This duo is the definition of modern indie pop sweetness. And this is only the beginning.

I immediately loved this song as soon as I heard it. It’s one of those tracks that can very possibly give you no choice but to love it. It’s got the classic upbeat drum, glittering keys, glowingly grungey guitar, and funky bass all orchestrated to achieve that infectious indie pop style.

The vocals consist of Josh and Mer beautifully harmonizing, their vocals complimenting each other in the sweetest of ways. There is a certain innocence to this music that sometimes gets lost in the mix of today’s dark, twisted, experimental music scene. Josh and Mer are keeping things light and breezy and sometimes that’s a really nice place to be.

If you’re into this track then guess what? This song was taken from Josh and Mer’s debut album, Planet Music, which was released back in October. So go ahead and grab yourself a copy and dream about the warm spring weather that suits this music perfectly.
