Small Black is a chillwave artist, and like most bands in that genre, they have looked past the label and are continuing to create unique music; their sound improves with every record.

Their newest release is called Limits of Desire. There’s a light, airiness to the songs, mostly created by the synthesizers — but behind the big sound is always a smooth back beat. This first single, “Free at Dawn,” is a perfect example of what Small Black is trying to accomplish on Limits of Desire; it kicks off the album with a hypnotic mix of synths and drum beats.

Leave it to Beat Connection to echo my life at the moment. Each spring for the past three years, I’ve discovered a new Beat Connection track that I’ve fallen in love with — one that ended up being more a life mantra than just a catchy tune. In 2011, it was “In the Water,” when I was drowning in the dog days; in 2012 it was ”Think/Feel,” when I was giving myself demerits for every moment I was closed off to; and this year, it’s “Saola,” a track about turning a joyful eye towards your grim determination to succeed.

On”Saola,” hits it right away with a 1-2 punch, bringing the lyrical opening salve, “Well, well, I guess that’s life… you can’t pick up the pieces that you don’t like,” straight to the heart with quintessential gusto. Beat Connection have always had a knack for distilling their message into some amazing couplets and allowing the production to carry it like a muggy mist wafting into your ears. “Saola” perfects that method brilliantly.

The Odesza remix is definitely my favorite version of the track, as he gives it that extra kick in its step with some splicing and tropical beats to move it toward greatness. You can catch both these artists on tour together, and like them on their individual Facebook pages (Beat Connection) and (Odesza) to hear more.

Block x Blog was a night full of music, art, culture, and video games — a fun-filled adventure for all who came to America’s Backyard, The Green Room, and Revolution Live (the stage venues).

The festival kicked off at America’s Backyard, where concert goers were handed a strategy guide at the door with approximate set times of bands performing. Inside, Black Locust Society had setup a life-like video game. The music started around 6:30pm, with The Politix, a hip-hop band from Miami, FL. Next on stage was Lavola, an indie rock band that has a violinist in the mix. They rocked out as the crowd started to sprinkle in.

Revolution Live and The Green Room opened their doors at 8pm. There were artists selling some paintings and doing live art in the Green Room while The Gun Hoes started to play. In Revolution Live, X3SR opened the stage (which was designed by 8bitLexicon artist Alexis Frias). It looked like a scene out of Mario Bros, with a 3D green pipe on one side, a castle on the other side, and Mario and Luigi in the middle. There were also old school video games set up in both Revolution Live and The Green Room, which many guests enjoyed.

Block x Blog kept the party going late into the night/early morning with The Goddamn Hustle and Lil Daggers in America’s Backyard. The Green Room featured Boxwood, Rebel, Killmama, Suede Dudes, Ex Norwegian, Jacuzzi Boys and The Riot Act for the indie rockers in the crowd; at Revolution Live, the stage was graced by EONS, Deaf Poets, Plains, Krisp, MillionYoung, Afrobeta, and a DJ set from Holy Ghost! for electronic lovers.

Block x Blog is a festival of music and arts celebrating the nostalgia of going to a record store and playing video games at an old arcade. On Saturday, April 20, 2013, Block x Blog will bring together a line-up of national and local musicians, DJs, curated art galleries, and pop-up shops of local businesses and vendors within America’s Backyard, Green Room Nightclub, and Revolution Live, located in downtown Fort Lauderdale.

The event kicks off at America’s Backyard at 6PM, where Black Locust Society, Lil Daggers, local rappers and DJs will be playing for free. There will also be local vendors, including The Fine Print Shoppe, Iron Forge Press, and many others selling goods themed for Block x Blog.

At 8PM, Green Room Nightclub will host rock musicians, including Jacuzzi Boys, Suede Dudes, Ex Norwegian, The Gun Hoes, and many more. Radio-Active Records, Limited Fanfare Records, South Florida Music Obsessed, and New Times are presenting this part of the event, and will also be celebrating National Record Store Day.

If electronica is more your thing, then head over to Revolution Live at the same time. Subculture, 3J Hospitality, and Chicago-based music site Consequence of Sound will presenting headliner Holy Ghost!, Deaf Poets, Krisp, Millionyoung, Plains, and others until the ripe time of 4AM.

The Gun Hoes is a rock band from Miami, FL. They will be in the Green Room for your listening pleasure.

Suede Dudes is a five piece punk rock band from Fort Lauderdale, FL. There will be performing in the Green Room.

PLAINS is the brainchild of Michael McGinnis, originally from Chicago but currently living in Miami. His live band includes Jorge Rubiera on drums, Max Johnston on bass and Jorge Gonzalez Graupera on guitar.

Ex Norwegian is a rock band from Miami Beach, and they just released their fourth album, Crack, on April 2, 2013.

Sean Wouters and Nicolas Espinosa the duo that make up Deaf Poets — they’re based in Miami, FL. Their music can be described as garage rock with punk influences.

Lil Daggers are a psych rock band from Miami, FL. Catch them at American’s Backyard.

Krisp is a four piece band out of Miami. They identify as “indie dance” musicians.

Millionyoung is synth-pop artist Mike Diaz, who’s based in South Florida. Enjoy his music – it’s awesome.

Jacuzzi Boys features guitarist/vocalist Gabriel Alcala, drummer Diego Monasterios, and bassist Danny Gonzalez. They are From Miami, FL. Their genre is rock and roll.

Holy Ghost! are a DJ duo from New York, and they’re also headlining the event.

Work Drugs’s duo Tom Crystal and Ben Louisiana last appeared on Indie Shuffle with “Young Lungs“ back in December 2012. Now, they are about to set on short Midwest tour (check dates here) and to celebrate, they released a new track.

“Sunset on High Street” is a indie pop song with great keyboard work and nice saxophone play to create a smooth finish. This song is their first single off an untitled album due out sometime this summer.

According to the band, “The song was written about a homeless man named Milton Angland that we met on our last trip to Los Angeles. He shared with us stories of warm days on the fringe, the beauty of endless gridlock, the smell of a California summer breeze, the homeless community in L.A., revolution, and the people in Hollywood who gave him a chance.”

MillionYoung probably landed on my radar back in 2009, when our editor Hannah recommended that I check him out. It was right around that time that I was listening to Memory Tapes feverishly, so naturally I ended up liking the Florida-based Mike Diaz.

Ironically, MillionYoung’s new track “Variable” actually sounds a whole lot like Memory Tapes’ 2009 album Seek Magic. And given that I’ve had a hard time getting into new material from Memory Tapes, this is actually a pretty welcome similarity.

“Variable” is the title track off MillionYoung’s upcoming album Variable, which will be released February 12th via Old Flame Records / Rix Records.

Houses is the perfect little indie outfit. With a molasses Beach House pace, Kings of Leon weighted vocals, and Band of Horses serenity, they are a poster child for indie rock. Shoegazers and dancers alike can enjoy their music harmoniously, simultaneously, as one. Maybe even holding hands…

My first experience with Houses was due to a good friend of mine while we were living in Seattle. “Have you heard Houses?” she would ask. Regretfully at the time, my reply was a simple no. So strong was her passion that she promoted them at the local radio station where she worked, and her boyfriend even convinced them to write her a song for Valentine’s Day. Disgustingly, beautifully thoughtful on his part, but the point being that this shows the caliber of musicians Houses really is. Not only are they great songwriters, they are overtly human and caring.

“Beginnings” is their latest lo-fi single — overdue from the soft and lovely “Soak it Up” — and carries a bit more weight and maturity as to be expected from a second release. The lyrics, poignant to say the least, are so depressingly heavy it almost seems possible to wrap yourself in them as they fall from Dexter Tortoriello’s mouth.

A Quite Darkness is due out this April via Downtown Records.

Back in 2009, Memory Tapes was easily one of my most-listened to artists. I had his album Seek Magic on repeat while I read the somewhat-dark novel 100 Years of Solitude. So, there’s clearly some type of emotional association here.

His subsequent releases have gotten a bit more experimental, pushing the boundaries of a unique sound he had forged all his own. Trying to pinpoint or described exactly where he has landed is difficult, save to say that this new song “Neighborhood Watch,” the second off his upcoming album Grace/Confusion, is thoroughly dreamy (and growing on me quite quickly).

Dayve Hawk will be releasing the full album on December 4th.

Chad Valley has released his second single from his forthcoming debut album Young Hunger, set to be released on October 30.

This is yet another teaser from the highly anticipated album, which features talents such as Twin Shadow, Glasser, El Perro Del Mar, and fellow Oxonian Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, among others. After unveiling his first EP, Equatorial Ultravox, which included hits like “Now That I’m Real (How Does It Feel?),” the blogosphere has been buzzing with excitement.

Thus far, I’d say the high hopes are being met.

Chad Valley has released his second single from his forthcoming debut album Young Hunger, set to be released on October 30.

This is yet another teaser from the highly anticipated album, which features talents such as Twin Shadow, Glasser, El Perro Del Mar, and fellow Oxonian Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, among others. After unveiling his first EP, Equatorial Ultravox, which included hits like “Now That I’m Real (How Does It Feel?),” the blogosphere has been buzzing with excitement.

Thus far, I’d say the high hopes are being met.

Blackbird Blackbird is back with the release of their Boracay Planet EP. Mikey Maramag is the man behind this project, and ever since he bum rushed the music scene, he’s been undeniably unstoppable.

With every piece of music that Maramag releases, it’s a constant acceleration towards a new level of artistic expression. He specializes in electronically textured styles, deeply drenched in synths and reverb — but not without an electric guitar and definitive bass. Boracay Planet is nothing short of that. Less than a month has passed since the last time we featured Blackbird Blackbird, and that shouldn’t be a surprise really. I think he’s on the verge of a releasing a new EP titled Boracay Planet, so today’s reveal of the single “All” was somewhat anticipated.

I’ve noted that it often seems this particular artist can’t make his mind up about genre direction. But, with “All,” he’s clearly establishing himself as a pro in the chillwave niche. In fact, this sounds so much so like the best elements of Memory Tapes, Toro Y Moi and Neon Indian that…basically, I’m digging it a bunch.

Quoting the press release on this one:

Blackbird Blackbird shows off his pop sensibilities in “All”, thick with echoing guitar plucks and soothing, lightly-treated vocals. Chiming synths and fluttering clicks splash color on top of a melancholic tone. Clean four-to-the-floor beats and a lovely synth lead dissipate into dreamlike samples of incomprehensible speech and smooth, lapping waves. Distal remixes Blackbird Blackbirdʼs “Keep It Up” into a dark, barreling techno track. Blackbirdʼs crooning vocals stab into the rolling kick drum, complete with frenetic bubbling effects. The beat is broken up with touches of two-step futurism and at the very end, a playful flute appears to brighten the fade out.

Those who closely follow the work of Chaz Bundwick will no doubt be most familiar with his output at Toro y Moi. However, looking back to 2010, there was also his Les Sins guise, which he uses to make more dancefloor friendly music.

Les Sins has now returned with a release forthcoming on Dan Snaith’s JIAOLONG label (you might know Dan Snaith from his work as Caribou and Daphni). I like “Fetch,” which features cut up R&B vocals over a slow, swinging house beat.

Perhaps it’s time to get to know Kisses, a duo hailing from Los Angeles. Their second LP is soon to be released but for now, they’ve premiered their first single from the album — an infectious high-energy dream pop tune.

“Funny Heartbeat” starts off with a demanding dance beat, a twinkling electric guitar and male lead vocals. This simple trio sets the tone for a lovely ballad. Soon you’ll find this song rushes into a tasteful orchestra of shimmering synths and reverberated guitar while the chorus is anthemic and catchy.

The nostalgia I feel as I watch this live performance of Toro Y Moi is undeniable. One of the most energetic and on-point live shows I’ve ever been to was Toro Y Moi. But that was last year, although it sure looks like he’s still leading the way.

Not only is this a wonderfully recorded live performance, it’s a debut of Chaz Bundick’s new track, “Rose Quartz.” This one’s a doozy. It starts off slow and steady, positioned for blast off but in no rush to get there. The build up is a highly anticipated one, adding each delicate effect one at a time. A minute and a half into the song and it finally takes off. Before you know it, the track is drenched in synths, heavy bass and an infectious beats. The lyrics are sensual and honest.

This debut of “Rose Quartz” gets me really excited to hear what Toro Y Moi will be releasing next. Chaz Bundick is always on the up and up. Catch him while you can!

One of the best parts about discovering a new artist is learning that they have their entire album online to stream for free. In this case, Summer Heart’s About A Feeling is the album in question, including a particularly stand-out track with “I Wanna Go.”

Overall, the album is filled with synth-laden chillwave tracks that have a tendency to blur together. That’s not necessarily a bad thing given the dreamlike aura this genre aims to target. But, in the end, I have a feeling I’m comfortable coming back to the track “I Wanna Go,” and moving on from there.

If I were forced to attempt to compare this to someone else, it’d have to be Toro Y Moi. Still, its wholly unique in and of itself.

The Vancouver-based artist is among my favorite, and I couldn’t help but share the third single off his upcoming album All Of Us. It’ll be available May 22nd, so my guess is we’ll hear some new tunes beforehand.

By the looks of things, Teen Daze is headed to Europe. While logically I’d want to check his tour dates to confirm, the fact that “Fantasy” is the first track off a European-only tour EP is a bit of a giveaway.

The song itself is nothing new or experimental. It’s just good old Teen Daze being Teen Daze, which is why I like it so much.

Two times the Teen Daze in one day? That’s right! The Vancouver native Teen Daze has released two separate songs today (earlier today we covered the new single “Treten“).

This time round it’s a remix of “Brooklyn Sunburn,” which was the first single released off his upcoming album All Of Us Together. It’s pretty much good enough that it warrants posting, so you’ll just have to deal with a Teen Daze overload today.
