Sunday Night Chill: FBi’s The Bridge Presents “Maker”

FBi is a Sydney-based community radio station which prides itself on supporting Australian music (and does an incredible job in my opinion). Indie Shuffle’s affiliation with FBi in Australia extends to our Indie Shuffle Presents gigs being put on at FBi Social, the radio station’s brilliant live venue.

Recently, one of the station’s longest running programs, The Bridge, put out a compilation of local electronic music entitled Maker, a lot of which is perfect for this week’s Sunday Night Chill. Designed to give the public an introduction to a few of Australia’s burgeoning electo-music community, it includes a couple of artists which have been featured on Indie Shuffle previously (Spoonty, Nakagin). The entire compilation of ten tracks can be downloaded for FREE on Bandcamp.

What's so good?

“The Ends,” a track from The Naked and The Famous’ debut LP, always felt like a mantra of self-affirmation — much like the Serenity Prayer that’s so popular in America, without all the garbage nonsense interjected in it. Its lyrics are simple, with beautiful, auspicious austerity. It is the kind of mantra that soothes the soul during times of great change, death, or life.

Young Magic‘s remix (for the Remixes and B-Sides album out May 20, 2013) takes that idea and turns it into a swirling, heady hurricane that immediately turns the listener insular. Doubling the length and layering vocals upon vocals gives the track a cloistral feeling.

It’s the kind of music you listen to while trying to yoga it up and instantly inject yourself into your chi to find some jackass chakra that’s blocking you up.

What's so good?

Chicago-based DJ BeazyTymes has beefed up The xx’s “Unfold” with a new take on trap that involves minimal productions and an emphasis on heavy bass. Because this guy isn’t new to the game of remixing songs by The xx, it comes as no surprise that he gives his audience something worth getting excited over.

Drawing in a more spacial composition with heavy bass beats, this minimal electronica remix focuses your hearing on not only the haunting beats, but the mesmerizing vocals. While there are numerous The xx remixes out there, I have to say this is probably one of the better ones that I’ve come across. Taking a song of this caliber and building it up without interrupting its structure sounds like it would be a difficult task, but this mixologist manages to keep it all intact and treats our ears to something quite stunning.

What's so good?

As part of influential Sydney electronic trio Seekae (who we’ve featured on a Sunday Night Chill playlist), Alex Cameron has been celebrated both locally and internationally. The band’s percussionist, Cameron, has also branched off on his own, recently debuting his live show. After releasing “Gone South” (you can check out the clip below) earlier this year, he’s just offered up his first official single.

“She’s Mine” sees Cameron take a another step away from Seekae’s beat-orientated electro — the David Bowie references will be quickly noted given the seductive vocals and the synthy 80s vibe of the track. Most importantly, the track’s production is spot on, with the somewhat minimalist arrangement ably supporting Cameron’s strong voice and poignant lyricism.

I love a good side project, and this is an excellent one. Luckily, Cameron’s got a whole album ready to unleash on us in the coming months; I can’t wait!

Only adept lyricists dare to tread into the topic of death. Balancing the weight of death’s sentimentality is a bit like keeping an elephant upright on the blade of a scythe: tip it one way and the eulogy becomes wooden, the other and it’s a hysterical affair. Songs about new life and love allow for error and missteps in production as that’s what life is all about; but death is about finality and closure, and as such begs an exacting science in its tracks.

Few artists clear that bar, but a few songs I hold as exemplary are Mirel Wagners’ “No Death,” Radical Face’s “All is Well (Goodbye, Goodbye)“ and The Antlers’ entire debut LP. Well, we can also add Houses‘ “The Beauty Surrounds” (and the Silent Rider remix to boot) to that list.

“The Beauty Surrounds” reminds me of this Ukrainian documentary about hospice patients that I helped soundtrack. The movie’s entire point was about the moment of realization in a person’s eyes when they didn’t deny their reality anymore. There’s a line in this song which captures that perfectly:

“There’s some lights in your eyes that I follow about
But they’re dimming quick, and you’re getting sick,
So now I wander out alone.”

Those lines are delivered so fantastically as to be just fucking devastating… oh, I can’t even handle them. Just so brilliant.

What's so good?

Back in March, I reviewed a great track from Sydney electronic duo Lusinth. Now, one of the artists, Charlie Tait, has started a side project, Cambio Sun.

His first finished work is “Intuition,” a release that a seasoned performer would be proud of, let alone an 18-year old still finishing high school. The instrumental half of Lusinth, Tait has structured this track beautifully, with sparkling guitar, smooth percussion and well-placed breakdowns showing this talent’s large potential. The vocal arrangements on the track are super too, rising and falling throughout, giving it a really dreamy vibe — and best of all, it’s Tait singing himself!

Another wonderful young producer to keep an eye on in the coming year.

Sydney’s Embassy has already been featured a couple of times on Indie Shuffle, but only on playlists – a Sunday Night Chill and before that, a Friday Five. For this talented producer, it’s high time he received a post of his own, and luckily he’s just released a brand new track.

Proficient on jazz bass and guitar, “Forgotten (Short Memory)” shows off his musicianship in the way the track is put together. Staggered beats, echoing samples and of course, that bass, make for one incredibly smooth ride. You can clearly see how delicately this track has been structured in its layering, and it’s interesting to try and pick out Embassy’s varied influences in different sections. Best of all, it’s a “name your price” download on his Bandcamp.

“Forgotten (Short Memory)” is the first release off Embassy’s upcoming debut EP (due out in June).

Even though we just featured an awesome remix of Phoenix’s new track “Trying To Be Cool” by RAC yesterday, I just couldn’t resist sharing another remix with y’all. This time, its remixed by the British bloke Will Bloomfield, who is also part of the folk rock band Port Isla.

The Bloomfield version takes more of a retro approach by bringing a downtempo, synthy vibe to the mix. To think that Bloomfield created this sort of style of a remix while being part of a folk rock band really shows his musical diversity and taste.

This remix is truly worth a listen and a share. Oh, and by the way, apparently there is a Creators Project out asking for more remixes of this particular track, so I am sure this is not the last time you will hear a version of “Trying To Be Cool.”

One project that has really seemed to slip under the radar (ours included) is the collaboration between Koreless and Sampha, collectively known as Short Stories.

You’ll probably recognize Sampha’s sumptuous vocals from his collaborations with Jessie Ware and SBTRKT, and they work well over a typically subdued, melodic Koreless beat.

In the process of writing up this piece about Ramadanman’s remix of The xx’s “Missing” (under his Pearson Sound alias), I realized that we had never featured his track “Good Feelin,” which samples the Nina Simone classic.

Given that it’s Nina Simone, the vocals are strong enough to carry themselves with very little assistance. Which is perfectly suited to Ramadanman’s sparse production style.

On “Good Fellin’” he builds up the track with a minimal approach, eventually bringing in synths. Together, these elements wash around Simone’s ubiquitous vocal, creating a cleverly simple but seriously effective version of the original.

What's so good?

What do you get when you mix a Romanian DJ with a Spanish DJ? You get a remix of “All the Evil of this World,” which is a dark, yet funky and fuzzy vibe that is extremely bump-able.

For a detailed background on the remixer, ViLLΛGE, check out our December 2012 post that highlights his Kreayshawn “Gucci Gucci” edit featuring Neon Hitch. This happened to be my first time hearing his work, and the discovery was indeed a good one. For the quick background (a bit more my style), the dude looks like this, is from a country I’ve never been to, and happens to be a very talented DJ and remix artist.

Verbal diarrhea aside, the ViLLΛGE SoundCloud page is stocked with plenty of ear-candy, and if you’re feeling the vibes, check out his November EP, Takeover. I haven’t truly listened yet, but from an initial preview, it sounds pretty minty.

As for the remixee, Spanish DJ Henry Saiz has some pretty fresh electronic music of his own. ”All the Evil of this World” has a mild case of remix overload, as you will see by the high quantity of versions on his SoundCoud page, but with over 60 songs in the resume, there’s plenty to feast your ears on.

Beacon – Drive

What's so good?

Ghostly released this track by Brooklyn pair Beacon a bit early, and I don’t think I initially appreciated it for what it is: elegantly restrained. “Drive” radiates delicacy; it demands a more focused listening at a higher volume — otherwise some elements get a little lost. This doesn’t have to be a bad thing, and it’s a nice teaser for the rest of the album, The Ways We Separate.

It is, though, quintessential indietronica in the male vocals, with a somewhat twee (read: Postal Service) sound. But “Drive” is much more meditative than that, and I already feel guilty making such an association. That lingering last note is perhaps the most representative of the song’s whole impact. It serves almost as a confirmation of the artists’ intentional withholding which, of course, makes me crave the whole narrative.

I promise, this track will evolve with you as you listen, so don’t let it slip away!

Now that Bonobo’s latest album, The North Borders, has been out for a little while, we’re now able to start choosing some of our favorite tracks.

“Emkay” is one such song, with Bonobo changing the sound by incorporating swinging 2-step drums and a choice vocal sample in places.

The added swing of the drums takes this track from the normal chill atmospheres Bonobo occupies to something that might be included in a more eclectic club set, as Oneman demonstrated on a recent visit to Radio 1.

This ultra rare remix from James Blake’s Harmonimix project has finally seen the light of day in the form of a white label release on Deep Medi.

Although it was originally made in 2010, the only way to hear this was seeing one of the two DJs live, and in the process, becoming one of the most wanted yet unavailable records out there.

James Blake adds a warmth to Mala’s sparse original, at the same time, a certain pomp and influence that might have come from his training as a classical musician. Now we can hear this one in its full grandeur, it’s not hard to see why it was so sought after.

German house veteran DJ Koze has taken a step away from familiar territory on latest album Amygdala, embracing psychedelic and pop influences into his songs.

“Homesick,” which features vocals from Ada, proves this case and point. Resident Advisor describe it as “hip-hop swagger that’s undercut by glinting bells and Ada’s gorgeous vocal hook.” We featured it in this Sunday Night Chill playlist a few weeks back, but felt like it merited its own post as well.

Amygdala, which has been described as Koze’s Sgt. Pepper, is out now.

If you heard Nicolas Jaar’s Essential Mix last year, you might remember this Leonard Cohen cover he performed with Sasha Spielberg (yes, daughter of Stephen) under the name Just Friend.

The cover was a sensual, minimal affair, pretty much what you’d expect from Nicolas Jaar. We loved it, and we’re pleased to announce that the track is being released this week, alongside remixes from Shlohmo and Julia Holter!

Featuring remixes of Grizzly Bear’s “Sleeping Ute” and Brian Eno’s “Lux,” Nicolas Jaar’s 12″ collaboration of tracks was one of the most talked about releases of Record Store Day. Under most circumstances, remixing a Grizzly Bear song could be quite difficult, but if Nicolas Jaar is laying his fingers on it, you know it’s gonna be haunting, beat-driven, and gorgeous.

For this remix, Jaar takes the Grizzly Bear vocal elegance and layers it with some deep house refineries that take the song to the next level. After about the one minute mark, you will start to notice more of an electronic landscape that builds up into an eventual beat breakdown – not totally surprising, but pleasing nonetheless. His excellent use of bass and mesmerizing sound-building transforms a rather melancholic track into a slick production that will beg you to press replay several times over.

I’m living in Amsterdam for the month of April — not only because it’s an awesome city, but because I thought it’d be great for Indie Shuffle to expand its presence in Europe (watch out Barcelona, you’re next!).

One of the best parts about this “strategy” is that folks have been incredibly hospitable, with the particular upside being that I get to attend some great live shows. Case and point: Applescal performing at Prisma with Ryan Davis.

Unlike in the United States, shows often start pretty late in Europe. Such was the case with this performance, which was billed from 11pm until 5am. I arrived around 2am, catching the solid tail end of Ryan Davis’ set. The place was packed; two separate DJ rooms pumping out a variety of minimal electronic / house music.

By the time Applescal took the stage near 4am, I found myself thoroughly pooped. Fortunately, all it takes is a good beat to revive my energy, and on this note he delivered. If you’re curious, the attached song “Spring And Life” should give you a good taste.

Sunday Night Chill: Teen Daze, Fauxe, Houses + More

I feel like so many of my Sunday Night Chill playlists have one thing in common: they make me want to get in bed and drink hot chocolate (or sit by a fire and drink red wine — pick your poison). But not this playlist.

It’s been gloriously sunny and warm in San Francisco over the past few days, and this weekend I was lucky enough to escape to wine country. I spent the weekend drinking crisp white wine with the sun on my shoulders. It was blissful.

So crank up this playlist, sit on your patio with a cold beverage in hand, and soak up the spring sunshine before the night settles in. It’s only getting warmer, folks.

What's so good?

Ahh, just what I need. A chilled out, downtempo dreamwave track by UK’s Airhead entitled “Autumn.”

As soon as the song starts, you can feel a rush of warmth and calmness flow over you. The gently picked guitar and chilled out beat is the perfect compliment to the airy, ethereal vocals that lead the way. Throughout the song, it stays pretty consistent in its construction and execution, only taking a modest break for a bridge. Airhead does a wonderful job at instilling a sense of calm through the breathtaking effects they execute in “Autumn.”

June 11 is the date to remember. That’s when their debut album For Years will drop! So even though it’s spring in most parts of the world, press play on “Autumn” and get listening!

What's so good?

My eardrums just melted. Koreless is an artist we have featured on our Sunday Night Chill series, so to see him take Foals’ “Late Night” and genuinely give it a late-night feel…well, it’s certainly a treat.

The original song wasn’t a headbanger by any means. Rather, it took the gentle approach to climax that the Oxford-based band has pioneered for itself. Still, there’s something calm and beautiful about this rendition. Call it a great night cap, if you will?

Sunday Night Chill: All is Silent, All Is Wild

This week’s Sunday Night Chill owes a great deal of inspiration to Germany Germany’s new track, “Saturn,” which I wrote about last month (it “plays like an intrepid explorer finding himself in the fetal position on the rings of a planet’s icy, galactic roadways, racking his mind for an answer to the loneliness that ails him.”) After that post, I spent a lot of time envisioning the thought-life of that explorer.

That imagery served as a perfect embodiment of the self-growth potential of total isolation. After all, where all is silent, all is wild — and the mind reigns free within. But that wilderness can be maddening, and eventually you need to be thawed out by the affection of others.

Our setlist finds our intrepid explorer ”floating through the darkness all alone” on a search for a less fragile them in the universe, hoping to find maybe that’s loved, lived or lost more. As our setlist progresses the internal voiceovers devolve combustive feelings until 2:40 on Kuedo’s “Salt Lake Cuts.” where the need for solitude cedes to a gasping need for affection.

As MatthewDavid’s “Know You’re Not Alone” fills our explorer’s mind a multitude of palliative voices, Jeppow’s take on Lykke Li’s seminal hit finds him following his rescuers wherever they may lead him, leaving his ending as ambiguous as his beginning.

What's so good?

UK producer Distinction is back on our radar with a killer bass-drenched remix of S O H N’s “The Wheel.” This version takes inspiration from the original, but is given us a beat-driven, chopped and screwed spin that is completely dark and gorgeously executed.

Distinction takes the strong vocal ranges displayed in the original and lays some texture and trapped-out beats that compress it into a more structurally sound track. This rendition of “The Wheel” delivers something deeper, complex and more obscure, taking the listener to darker territory full of strong arrangements and mesmerizing soundscapes.
