“Absolutely beautiful” is probably the best descriptor I can use for Jamie Isaac’s remix of “Gun.” With this rendition, he has turned the powerful energy of the original track (released only last week) into a melodic and thoughtful song that, well…will probably have listeners stopping and thinking twice.

And you know what it reminds me of? The curveball that Ellie Goulding threw us when she covered Alt-J. If this subdued trend in the world of UK future garage continues (a la Jessie Ware, London Grammar, AlunaGeorge), you can bet your bottoms I won’t be complaining.

On this remix, Barratt creates a rolling soundscape to Passenger’s “All The Little Lights” — a pleasant folk track with a 60s sound that takes on a new brilliance with some electronic production.

Koreless takes an already gorgeous track and and spins it sexy through his silky remix machine. The result is so slick and lush that it’s sure to make your eardrums mess your monster beats. We featured this track on a Sunday Night Chill playlist, but it really deserves its own review.

Koreless has been a staple fixture in my music library, largely thanks to tracks like his captivating remix of “Late Nights” by Foals. He gives How to Dress Well’s “Cold Nights” a similar treatment to beautiful effect. I’m not sure if there is a night theme developing in his repertoire of remixes, but his music certainly plays well deep into the late night hours.

Koreless uses a sparse sense of composition that breathes life into his signature palate of wet, hang drum-esque cadences. The ambient textures and soft vocals make “Cold Nights”  perfect for a post-club wind down. His meticulous production, muted synth pads, and melodic phrases that build and decay atmospherically throughout the song put my ears into a kind of coital paralysis.

At 19 years old, Koreless’ Lewis Roberts produces music with a richness and spaciousness that belie his age. It baffles me how organically rythmic and pulsing his music manages to be without the use of any drums. He just dropped an EP called Yugen that’s been getting a lot of attention (both here on Indie Shuffle and throughout the music blogoshpere at large). I for one am excited to follow the trajectory of his promising career; keep your eye on this young talent.

Chicago-based DJ BeazyTymes has beefed up The xx’s “Unfold” with a new take on trap that involves minimal productions and an emphasis on heavy bass. Because this guy isn’t new to the game of remixing songs by The xx, it comes as no surprise that he gives his audience something worth getting excited over.

Drawing in a more spacial composition with heavy bass beats, this minimal electronica remix focuses your hearing on not only the haunting beats, but the mesmerizing vocals. While there are numerous The xx remixes out there, I have to say this is probably one of the better ones that I’ve come across. Taking a song of this caliber and building it up without interrupting its structure sounds like it would be a difficult task, but this mixologist manages to keep it all intact and treats our ears to something quite stunning.

Only adept lyricists dare to tread into the topic of death. Balancing the weight of death’s sentimentality is a bit like keeping an elephant upright on the blade of a scythe: tip it one way and the eulogy becomes wooden, the other and it’s a hysterical affair. Songs about new life and love allow for error and missteps in production as that’s what life is all about; but death is about finality and closure, and as such begs an exacting science in its tracks.

Few artists clear that bar, but a few songs I hold as exemplary are Mirel Wagners’ “No Death,” Radical Face’s “All is Well (Goodbye, Goodbye)“ and The Antlers’ entire debut LP. Well, we can also add Houses‘ “The Beauty Surrounds” (and the Silent Rider remix to boot) to that list.

“The Beauty Surrounds” reminds me of this Ukrainian documentary about hospice patients that I helped soundtrack. The movie’s entire point was about the moment of realization in a person’s eyes when they didn’t deny their reality anymore. There’s a line in this song which captures that perfectly:

“There’s some lights in your eyes that I follow about
But they’re dimming quick, and you’re getting sick,
So now I wander out alone.”

Those lines are delivered so fantastically as to be just fucking devastating… oh, I can’t even handle them. Just so brilliant.

So, there was period on the intertubez where the hullabaloo surrounding Daft Punk had reached such a deafening level that I lost all interest in hearing anything about the band. Seriously, Daft Punk fans are exhaustively intense (you got to love their passion, though). After awhile, I was a bit like Batman in this Daft Punk-themed meme. But, like Daughter’s music, their cover of  ”Get Lucky“ is the perfect salve for a reputation rubbed raw.

Daughter’s take is quintessentially them, with a controlled delivery leaving each bar lingering with baited breath. In that way, Daughter turns the track slightly ominous. It’s less an orgy of celebration and more the dark thoughts that come when convincing yourself to pursue a man who wears an enticing guise, but is clearly a dangerous walk down self-destruction lane.

In that way, it’s eerily similar to when The Bird and the Bee turned Rihanna’s “Don’t Stop the Music“ into a sensual affair for the ages. It’s quite the feat, but nothing less than the amazing tour de force we’ve come to expect from Daughter.

This ultra rare remix from James Blake’s Harmonimix project has finally seen the light of day in the form of a white label release on Deep Medi.

Although it was originally made in 2010, the only way to hear this was seeing one of the two DJs live, and in the process, becoming one of the most wanted yet unavailable records out there.

James Blake adds a warmth to Mala’s sparse original, at the same time, a certain pomp and influence that might have come from his training as a classical musician. Now we can hear this one in its full grandeur, it’s not hard to see why it was so sought after.

It’s a foggy, rainy, gray day here in San Francisco. I’m spending the entirety of it in a steamy kitchen, making a belated Passover dinner for nine people. My brisket is slow cooking in the oven (tenderly falling apart) and my homemade chicken soup is simmering brightly with carrots, parsnips, and other root veggies — and I’m in desperate need of some ambient, electronic tunes to keep my anxiety level down. That’s where this Sunday Night playlist comes in handy.

It’s a perfect recipe of Daughter and Bon Iver remixes, peppered  with some other gorgeous tracks here and there. Let the music wash over you like a warm bath — soothing your troubles and untangling some of the knots in your muscles. Enjoy your Easter, or Passover… or simply have a lovely Sunday.

I’m notorious for my critiques of Daughter remixes. I’m still not quite sure what inspired Indie Shuffle to invite me to write for the site after I called this Alle Farben remix of Youth an “emotional tease,” but I’m definitely grateful. Daughter’s music is pretty precious to me, and I get a little overprotective of it; so, when I hear a remix done so right that it makes me jump out of my seat to write about it, I have to do just that.

For me, the entire power of a Daughter track stems from the way that the vocalist distills a maudlin and contemplative prose with such sonic immediacy that you can’t tear yourself away from her voice. A great Daughter rework doesn’t distract through needless flair, bells, and musical solos, as other remixers do. Sure, with some artists you can do that, but with Daughter the rule is never distract, only amplify.

That’s what Philipp Schneider does in his deep house take on “Still.” His synth and looped beats touch the track only to intensify the feeling of dusk taking over one’s soul. In his remix, when she sings:

It’s spiraling down
Biting words like a wolf howling
Hate is spitting out each others mouths

the emotional buildup from his vision makes the words drive like a stake into the center of your heart –relaying a perfect understanding of the song’s emotional core.

According to Last.fm and in short, the couple lived an indigenous and sustainable lifestyle while living off the land in Papaikou, Hawaii. The lifestyle they experienced while in Hawaii was their inspiration behind their style of music, and ultimately translated into a balance of ambient and minimal electronic beats that have a strong organic feeling.

Houses have recently put their organic touch on the hot Kate Boy’s song, “Northern Lights,” which is an elegant example of their work.  The remix tones down the original poppy version while adding meandering electronic fills and echoing vocals.

By far one of the strangest form of hip-hop remix are those in which the vocals are slowed down substantially. I’ve seen this referred to as a “Bluewave Edit” (see Nicolas Jaar), so I’m not too surprised to see Joneses calling this one a “Purple Edit.”

In his crosshairs this time are Drake and DNTEL. Drake probably needs no intro, but I find the appropriateness of DNTEL as wonderful. You might recognize him as the second half of The Postal Service (along with Ben Gibbard of Death Cab For Cutie) — arguably his most successful venture.

I can’t say I’ve paid much attention to either of these individual tracks, but they mold together in a pretty relaxing way.

This minimal mix of “If You’re Never Gonna Move” sticks to the essentials, but strips down the fast-paced bass and uptempo nature of the original in order to give it a more complimentary background to her gorgeous soul-driven vocals. The electronic touches create a soft balance that withdraws from the fundamental remix workings and fills it with a bone-chilling downtempo adaptation that is as sweet to the ears as Ware is to the eyes.

Recently, Wildlife Control had a remix contest. The competition was judged by Wildlife Control and guest judges from Indie Shuffle and The Music Ninja.

Nearly a year ago, when they released their single, ”Analog or Digital,” I took a genuine interest in Wildlife Control, so of course I was flattered that they asked me to be a judge on behalf of Indie Shuffle.

I will tell you, it wasn’t a hard decision. Hands down, Ille Gal was by far the best in the batch. He’s an unestablished artist from Slovenia, and from the sound of his other material, he seems to focus on minimal, atmospheric electronic, leaning toward the dark side of things. While his remix of “Analog or Digital” retains the ambience Gal is accustomed to, it’s got a much brighter sound.

I think it’s safe to say Gal broke his own mold, and a little less safe to say (but I’m going to say it anyway): this may be his best work. It’s raining up a storm in San Francisco, so I’ve been listening to a good bit of downtempo, moody music. While exploring, I stumbled upon a great playlist by Prefix Mag, “Top 10: The xx Remixes.”

It’s raining up a storm in San Francisco, so I’ve been listening to a good bit of downtempo, moody music. While exploring, I stumbled upon a great playlist by Prefix Mag, “Top 10: The xx Remixes.”

The list features a number of tracks that I’m already familiar with, but this was one I hadn’t heard yet. Hitting play turned me on to it instantly. It’s certainly not the best remix on the list (anything to do with “You’ve Got The Love” is typically amazing), but still quite fitting.

If you remember the minor sensation the Four Tet remix of “Smalltalk“ caused in September, then you may also have just been learning about Ultraísta for the first time.

Their debut album, I Am Fortified, showed some sense of mastery from producer Nigel Godrich (of Radiohead fame) and the crooning vocals from Laura Bettinson. But the music leaves something to be desired, or as musicomh.com bluntly puts it, “(The album) succeeds wholeheartedly in being pleasant, listenable and totally forgettable.”

But like so much indie music these days, it’s the remixes that break ground and put bands on the map. I’ve said it before, but DJ/producers keen on the club and the dancefloor know exactly how to unlock the potential in a track, as they should. Maribou State does just that with Ultraísta’s “Gold Dayzz.”

If your ears constantly yearn for silky house thumpers, then you’ll thank the London duo for this amazing remix. But let’s also thank Ulraísta for conceiving the idea in the first place as we appreciate the difference a perspective can make.

Boards of Canada must have one of the largest cult followings of any band in recent history. Their last album The Campfire Headphase was released back in 2005, and to this day ranks in my top 10 albums ever.

From working with John Talabot to defining himself as a respected solo artist, Spanish producer Pional has time and time again impressed audiences around the globe with the power of sliced up grooves and a downtempo house sound. His showcased skills as a producer elevates his imprint in the remix category, and his infectious workings on How To Dress Well’s “& It Was U” is already on repeat throughout the music blogosphere.

The multi-instrumental nature of the song looped in with Tom Krell’s beautifully haunting falsetto is already a strategic maneuver to press on, but Pional’s ultra sleek vibrations only add to the electricity of the original. Down go the vocals and up goes the beat tempo, making this more groove-able and club-friendly.

It’s usually a pretty easy decision to show support for a band from Cape Town, the city I was born and raised in. It gets even easier when School of Seven Bells is the band remixing their work.

“Fire Escape” was the third track (and first single) on the band’s recently-released album Holy Weather, which did pretty well worldwide. So well in fact, that they decided to enlist the assistance of a few other bands for a remix EP. You can listen to those tracks (including an awesome one by Ra Ra Riot) on Soundcloud.
