Perks of running a music blog full-time? Following the music, of course! And in this case, I’m fortunate enough to be able to make my way over to Barcelona for the Primavera Sound music festival, which takes place later this week (tickets still available here).

Things officially kick off today, but given there are only ~15 bands playing, I figured I’d skip to Thursday. It seems to have a mostly indie-rock slant, and I can’t even count how many bands are playing. Here are the acts I’ll be making sure not to miss:

Poolside: 6.30pm on the Ray-Ban stage. Daytime disco dance party anyone? Please!

Tame Impala: 8.30pm on the Heineken stage. Ready to drift away in a psych-rock haze, and then probably get dinner.

Jessie Ware: 9.55pm on the Pitchfork stage. But there’s some competition — Dinosaur Jr. and Do Make Say Think. Will probably catch some of the latter, who start 20 minutes before Jessie on the ATP stage.

The Postal Service: 10.55pm on the Heineken stage. Absolutely can’t miss this High School flashback.

Grizzly Bear: 12:15am on the Primavera stage.

Phoenix: 1.40am on the Heineken stage. Alright, this is starting to get late. 7 hours in now? Must. Keep. Going.

Four Tet: 2.25am on the Pitchfork stage. Am I getting too old for this?

Animal Collective: 3.10am on the Heineken stage. The last time I saw them it was amazing. Might have to try again.

John Talabot: Okay, this is pushing it. 4.15am? I might have to call it a night…

Even though we just featured an awesome remix of Phoenix’s new track “Trying To Be Cool” by RAC yesterday, I just couldn’t resist sharing another remix with y’all.  This time, its remixed by the British bloke Will Bloomfield, who is also part of the folk rock band Port Isla.

The Bloomfield version takes more of a retro approach by bringing a downtempo, synthy vibe to the mix.  To think that Bloomfield created this sort of style of a remix while being part of a folk rock band really shows his musical diversity and taste.

Three RAC remixes in one week? I’m not even going to apologize this time — when I was asked to premiere this remix of Phoenix’s “Trying To Be Cool,” I didn’t even think twice.

Sounds like: Phoenix, Rooney, Fitz and the Tantrums

Portugal’s Johan Rodrigues has put out a high-energy rock pop album, titled Um, that’s quite reminiscent of Phoenix and Fitz and the Tantrums.

Throughout this album you’ll find yourself engulfed in thick layers of keyboards, electric guitars and lush vocal layers of harmonies. Hot Natured’s remix is slowed down and bass-driven, which keeps your attention for the track’s seven full runtime. Props to Hot Natured for doing an excellent job of remixing “Entertainment” without losing the song’s core.

You knew this was coming.

If you attended last weekend’s Coachella Festival or watched the YouTube livestream like I did, you most likely caught Phoenix’s performance. Right when you thought that their set couldn’t get any better, R. Kelly pops out of the woodwork and starts singing “Ignition” on top of Phoenix’s “1901″ instrumentals.

While there are several mashups that have been created to honor this anthem-sized collaboration, Chicago artist The Hood Internet has blended up a saucy track for us to vibe to. Enjoy.

When Phoenix announced that they would be making a quick stop in San Francisco before they hit the Coachella Weekend 1 circuit, everyone within a 40 mile radius was itching to guarantee themselves a spot at one of San Francisco’s smallest venues.

On April 1, fresh on their first tour in two years, these French troubadours came, sang and conquered The Independent with opener Mac DeMarco by their side. Playing a 500-capicity venue is not a typical night for Phoenix – these dudes can be seen selling out amphitheaters all across the world – and after years of not touring, it came as a complete surprise that they decided to take the smaller route than to go big, but hey, I’m not complaining.

As the lights finally dimmed to a red hue at around 9:45pm, the mixed crowd of all ages energetically rooted and howled until Thomas Mars and crew took their place on stage and launched into “Entertainment.” Appropriately opening with the lead track off their forthcoming Bankrupt! album, fans began to get into the upbeat swing of things and started to dance around without a care in the world.

Playing mostly all their hits from Bankrupt! and Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, combined with even older tracks from 2006′s It’s Never Been Like That, Phoenix knows how to get a crowd moving with excitement, screaming the lyrics and dancing like their lives depended on it.

After over an hour of rocking out, the band left the stage only to return moments later with a softer stage presence. Mars took this as an opportunity to get on the same level as the audience and jumped into the crowd with an minimally driven version of “Countdown.” When the rest of the band emptied the stage, Mars grabbed his mic and headed to the opposite side of the room only to jump back into the sea of people and crowd-surf his way back to the stage.

Even though they’ve taken a long vacation from touring, it’s clear that these guys have hit their stride once again and are continuously proving to us why they’re still one of the best bands around. Cheers to you, Phoenix.

Gypsy & the Cat’s sophomore album The Late Blue is due out later this year, and we’ve already featured its first two singles (“Bloom” and “Sorry”) as SOTD… which means that the Melbourne band have now completed the hat-trick with their delightful new track, “Only in December..

This song has taken them in a slightly different direction from the dream-pop vibe of their first album, 2010’s Gilgamesh. As you’ve likely noticed on their latest tracks, there’s a shift towards a slightly more eclectic, bohemian sound – possibly picked up during their globetrotting over the past couple of years.

“Only in December” does not differ from this new style, once again solidifying them as one of the finest purveyors of pop around. Summery and vibrant, the track features plenty of deft synth-work, a throbbing bass-line, and playful vocals – everything a great pop song needs.

With the album due out around the world shortly (it’s already out in Australia!), Gypsy & the Cat will likely be bringing their brilliant pop music to a town near you. Keep an eye out!

Dev Hynes is a modern day musical medic. Sometimes red-hot artists like Kavinsky and Phoenix release anticipated singles that scorch the charts right out of the gate. These singles burn the air like sun rays in a nuclear winter; we’re so caught up in basking our bodies in their warmth that we don’t notice the tracks wandering around confused, heat-stroking out right in front of us.

But Dev Hynes, aka Blood Orange, notices, and he rescues the track from itself, cleans it up, gives it two hots and a cot and then sends it back out to the world a less feverish version of itself. In this case, I was so excited to hear the first new single from Phoenix in five years that I overlooked that the stanzas and chorus didn’t feel like a cohesive song; instead, upon repeated listens, they felt at odds with each other and it muddled the premise of “Entertainment.”

Hyne’s smooth, Prince-esque production skills are the perfect complement to this track, streamlining its vision into an ode to unrequited desire. Hynes introduces Mutya Keisha Siobhan as backing vocalists who turn the chorus into a yearning plea and bleed effortlessly into his transformation of Thomas Mars’ performance. It all makes for one undeniably heartbreaking affair.

I was a little surprised to see Miami’s Robby Hunter Band releasing new material on a Friday, considering I rarely come across anything new during the weekend. Nonetheless I will review the hell out of their debut single, “Hard On Me.”

The band describes this track as:

Listening to Berlin’s Rooftop Runners is a great way to start your day. More specifically, listen to their single “Energize.”

As soon as I pressed play, I felt an ethereal flow that made for a perfect pick-me-up. This is the type of track that capitalizes on repetitiveness, but in a tasteful, innovative way. It’s an artistic expression (as most music is), but once you watch the video for “Energize” you’ll see that these brothers are much more than just musicians. These boys can DANCE.

I love the fluid characteristic of this song. It’s not jagged or chopped up into pieces. It’s very much a beautifully flowing artistic piece that shows multiple facets of how one can energize. Go ahead, shufflers, take your pick.

In case you aren’t aware, SXSW’s music portion is about to lift off full-steam. Which means that pretty much all your favorite artists are booked up with live gigs. And as a result, there’s not much good new music going around…

So, as I typically do in these situations, I’m going to fall back on one of my favorites: Phoenix’s “Long Distance Call,” released on the band’s third album in 2006, titled It’s Never Been Like That (which happens to be a common phrase in this song).

As I listen through this five-track EP, I hear many different things: nu-disco, funk, R&B, pop, synth, and beyond. These are all great elements, obviously… but it’s the way Body Language went about constructing each song to perfection. And each song is perfection.

After drumming up plenty of buzz after the release of their debut single “Work Around It,” Melbourne duo Them Swoops are set to continue buzzing with the imminent arrival of their EP, Glimmers. Having supported the likes of the Maccabees and San Cisco last year, they’ve just released the second track off the EP, the infectious “Too Fast for Love.”

Self recorded/produced in Melbourne, the track was then dispatched to L.A., where Mark Needham (The Killers, Bloc Party) added the finishing touches. “Too Fast for Love” is another wonderfully sunny pop song — and for just two people, they sure make a lot of noise. There first single had a real carefree feel to it, and this doesn’t stray too far from that path; it focuses on acoustic guitar and Dave McGann’s searing vocals.

These two guys are 2/2 thus far with their fun, easily accessible indie pop bound to put a smile on your face.

When I first heard Photo Ops single, “It Makes Me Cry,” it didn’t immediately sink in for some reason. But over the course of a few days, it has taken hold on me, and it’s not letting go.

Terry Price is the man behind Photo Ops, and he confidently leads the way, playing every instrument on his upcoming album, How To Say Goodbye (set to release on February 26, 2013). His debut single, “It Makes Me Cry,” is a pop-filled dance jam that is the perfect teaser to his album. With the luscious layers and thick instrumentation, it’s pretty awesome to remember that Terry Price did all of this himself. I don’t know about you, but it makes me appreciate it that much more.

With that being said, I’m eagerly looking forward to Photo Ops’ How To Say Goodbye to hear what else Terry has up his seriously ambitious sleeves.

Robotaki is like this mysterious figure who shows up at random moments to drop off sunshine-filled sound treasures. Hyperbole aside, the Canadian producer has my support, especially when he’s offering free downloads. I know, I know — everyone and their mother has covered Phoenix, but don’t let that stop you from enjoying this great remix of “1901.”

Robotaki believes he produced this remix in 2010, at least according to the track’s description on SoundCloud. It makes sense to me. A phoenix is supposed to rise from the ashes, right?

Robotaki is like this mysterious figure who shows up at random moments to drop off sunshine-filled sound treasures. Hyperbole aside, the Canadian producer has my support, especially when he’s offering free downloads. I know, I know — everyone and their mother has covered Phoenix, but don’t let that stop you from enjoying this great remix of “1901.”

Robotaki believes he produced this remix in 2010, at least according to the track’s description on SoundCloud. It makes sense to me. A phoenix is supposed to rise from the ashes, right?

I think that I’m quite right in saying that the UK has as much trouble as Australia in keeping up with their vast amount of independent music talent. Today, let me just add another band from Birmingham onto the 2013 radar. This band is named The Traps, and the quartet spent much of their earlier days writing and releasing free music in order to gain fans. In 2009, they founded the record label Speech Fewapy Records to enable the release of their own EPs.

Fast forward to 2013, and “Calypso” is the first official release taken from their debut album of the same name (based off the character Calypso from Homer’s famous greek poem Odyssey). It’s certainly got those hooky guitar lines made so famous by Phoenix, plus a touch of Theme Park’s buzzy and anthemic synth based rock, which definitely  separates this from a mediocre song to a brilliant indie dancefloor number.

No official release date of Calypso as of yet, but it’s expected to be released early this year. Enjoy!

London’s The Title Sequence has just released an incredibly pop-friendly single focused on something that I think most of us love: payday!

Of course, a day like that calls for some fun music to complement the matter, right? Well why not add “Payday” to that list? The song starts strong and stays strong through and through. High-energy guitars accompanied by an upbeat bass and a totally danceable beat is the perfect recipe for a celebratory payday song. And the vocals? You’ll end up humming or singing along with this light-hearted melody.

A couple of months ago, I reviewed a remix done by Radial, but had absolutely no idea who they were; it was only today my questions were answered by a rather lovely email from Radial themselves. Well, it turns out that they’re a duo — more to the point, Mark and Joe Endozo are actually brothers living in NYC.

Now, they’ve done a pretty suave cover of Phoenix’s “Holdin’ On Together,” a song that featured on Alphabetical back in 2004. Here’s what they have to say:

“We just wanted to be Phoenix for 3 minutes and 46 seconds. It’s something to show what inspires us and slowly transforms into us.”

I mean it’s not a whole lot different to the original apart from the vocals, but since their new album is on the horizon I thought this would be a nice reminder.

I’m sure pretty much all of you remember the movie Garden State. On top of that, there’s a good chance you’ve listened to the soundtrack album countless times. But, do you remember this song?

Travis’ “Love Will Come Through” was featured on the trailer for the 2004 film, but never actually made the cut. Off their album 12 Memories, the song appears to have been destined to be relegated to the sidelines.

But, in case you want a reminder, here’s a link to the trailer in all its glory (embedding disabled). Watching it now…Lord knows why the hell we fell for this movie. Natalie Portman, right?
