Much has been written about Savages’ post-punk aesthetic and commitment to the long-forgotten principles of complete sonic immersion. Putting aside the fact that the band members would prefer not to gaze out at a sea of iPhones and cameras while they’re performing, the some questions remain: Are they any good? Does their music live up to their ideology and aesthetic?

Refreshingly, the answer is a resounding yes. Debut LP Silence Yourself is a jagged slice of ballsy post-punk with just enough of a modern touch to make them more than a retro throwback. The band’s sound is for the most part studiously spare, with just enough syncopated beats, driving bass and artfully placed shards of noisy guitar to complement singer Jehnny Beth’s nuanced vocal performance.

Although every band member contributes something essential to the mix, Beth is the highlight. On lead single “Husbands,” she demonstrates considerable versatility, communicating as much with a foreboding whisper as a bracing shriek. The chorus, if you can call it that, encapsulates Savages’ songwriting approach quite well, conveying an amalgam of conflicting emotions in a minimalist fashion. You can feel Beth straining against the shackles of heteronormativity (for all of you gender studies majors out there) with every repetition of the song’s title.

Yet, there is also an accompanying sense of fear and vulnerability. The song’s protagonist is not simply dismissing a cultural institution out of rebelliousness or apathy. She seems to be wrestling with a real emotional dilemma, one that is growing increasingly common in a time where some of feminism’s core ideals about independence are coming into conflict with the allure of a traditional family structure.

In this way, Savages transcend the often bloodless sloganeering prominent among Riot Grrl bands that addressed similar subject matter with less nuance. While it would be reductive to draw blanket conclusions about a subject as complex and multifaceted as feminism from one song, Jehnny Beth’s lyrics, and those of similarly-minded bands, seem to suggest that feminist musicians have grown sufficiently comfortable in their own skin to admit that, decades after second-wave feminism transformed the way we think about gender roles, the question of how to reconcile some of its core doctrines with the potential benefits and trappings of a traditional relationship is a highly individual affair that no theoretical doctrine can entirely address.

Ever since Skaters’ teaser of an EP, I’ve been patiently waiting for their next release. Well, they’re back with a 7″, and one of the tracks, “Armed,” is a perfectly avant garde synth-rock trip.

Skaters has the ability to maintain quite a chill undertone while fearlessly topping that with edgy grunge overtones that makes for a sound they can call their own. The rhythm section has got a wordly tropicalia feel to it while the electric guitar keeps things raw and kraut. The vocals are atmospheric and reverberated, so much so that this song would be a lovely accompaniment to getting straight-up wasted. Cheers!

The other track to their 7″, “I Wanna Dance (But I Don’t Know How),” is a fun and more pop-friendly contrast to “Armed” and also deserves a listen, and then some.

Representing a synthesis of disparate musical forms, Slim Charles wears their influences proudly, even as they carve out a sound that is distinctively their own. Traces of math rock, indie, space rock and funk are all apparent, but Slim Charles does not fit neatly into any category. As one might expect, juggling these different styles (often in the span of one song) requires a considerable amount of technical skill. Fortunately, each band member — vocalist/guitarist Dom Green, guitarist Ben Mickelson, bassist Ken Siu and drummer Alex Jarvis — brings a healthy portion of chops to the table.

Yet on debut LP, Versus Fatso Jr, Slim Charles never gets bogged down in vacant pyrotechnics, playing with as much heart as brains. They possess the rare ability to challenge listeners in a manner not incongruous with good, solid hooks. Fan-favorite track “Triangulate” simultaneously serves as a testament to the band’s songwriting talent and impeccable musicianship.

It begins with a syncopated guitar figure which introduces the song’s off-kilter time signature and foreshadows its subsequent vocal refrain. A second guitar soon joins in, working organically off its predecessor in a manner recalling the restrained, yet skillful, interplay of virtuosic post-punk musicians like Tom Verlaine and Richard Hell circa Television. This guitar-focused verse of sorts soon gives way to a hypnotic, forceful chanting of the phrase: “Hey you, trying, make moves triangulate,” the melody and cadence of which repeats several times throughout the song with similarly enigmatic lyrics.

In tying emotional resonance and philosophical weight to an empirical spacial concept, Green calls to mind Tool vocalist Maynard James Keenan, but without the bombastic pretension. The vocals cut through the mix with a detached urgency that complements the instruments weaving angles in the background. “Triangulate” deftly straddles the line between free-form jamming and premeditated structure, thanks in no small part to Slim Charles’s rhythm section. Jarvis and Siu deftly transition between the song’s multiple parts, anchoring the deft guitar interplay of Mickelson and Green in a solid foundation, thereby lending form to what could otherwise seem directionless.

Although a far cry from mainstream, Slim Charles may well find wider popularity nipping at their heels if they keep turning out songs as anthemic and sophisticated as “Triangulate.”

Monochrom is a short and solemn experimental synth-pop EP from Prague artists Dominik Gajarsky and Roman Stetina, running under the name of PALERMO. It’s sharp and gut-wrenching, a bit like Former Ghosts when they first came out; I wasn’t surprised to see a Freddy Ruppert cover included. Most of the tunes are pretty eerie, with bleak lyrics sung like whispers in the dark for slow dances in the shadows.

PALERMO will release their debut LP, called Still Life, under the US label Crazy Iris Records in May. Until then, you can listen by downloading this EP on Bandcamp and follow their release on Facebook. I highly recommend checking out the “Book of Ethics” music video — an excellent hand-held one-shot that perfectly sums up how PALERMO balances calm and soothing with perturbed and storming.

Slander is a five-piece rock combo from Mystic, CT. The lead singer, Julia Farrar, contacted drummer Rich Freitas about a year ago to see if he wanted to form a new band. He said, “Yeah, let’s do this.” They then filled out the lineup with guitarists Grayson Connelly and Luke Hunter and bassist Chris Wimpfheimer.

“Magnet” is their first official single. It’s got a post-punk feel, powerful guitar rifts, and rocking vocals by Juila Ferrar. Check out the B-side to this single, “Ghost,” and also watch a music video featuring both songs here.

In a day and age where so much of our attention is focused on the latest, cutting-edge music, it was nice that My Bloody Valentine’s new record got so much attention (even if it was kinda disappointing). And in that same vein, it’s fantastic to see a young band like The Bilinda Butchers embody the wonderfully fuzzy shoegaze sound that so many of us grew to love over the last few decades.

Based out of San Francisco, duo Michal and Adam list their influences as The Radio Dept, Air, Rocketship, and of course My Bloody Valentine, who’s lead singer Bilinda Butcher provides their namesake. They’re releasing “The Lovers’ Suicide” as the first single off their upcoming album (yet titled), which you can pre-order on CD or vinyl.

There’s still a solid hint of youth in the track — likely owing to the fact that this duo appear to be in their early-20s at the oldest. Overall, definitely looking forward to what the full album will have in store.

Toronto’s Decades is a catchy post-punk outfit that’s quickly on the rise while building buzz for their upcoming self-titled LP set to release on April 30, 2013.

“Tonight Again” is an ambient-drenched ballad that’s slightly melancholy, with a touch of glimmering punk-pop to boot. The fact that this band is a four-piece makes the composition of this song even more impressing and elusive. It’s slightly heart-breaking, filled with conviction and really magnetic. Each instrument holds its own while encapsulating an enveloping orchestral post-punk anthem.

It’s obvious that Decades has great taste and great execution. I can only wait patiently until April 30 to find out what else they have up their sleeves. Until then, check out their video for this single.

Hmm. I wasn’t really sure what to make of this at first. I mean, I loved it, but the style thoroughly confused me. In a good way. It was like I was slapped in the face, or jumped in a cold pool of water. An immediate reminder of Dan Deacon or Captain Ahab. Or something of that variety. It’s crazy, hyper shit.

“I’ll Teach You to Hunt” is the first series of 7″ singles released by Camilla Sparksss via Swiss label On the Camper. Ms. Sparksss (yes, three S’s) is apparently the “fantasy ego” of Babara Lehnoff, a Swiss-Canadian (is that a real thing?) from art punk band Peter Kernel. On her website, it says she loves “rap, drum machines, thermal baths and traveling.” Is this real life? Not only is her music good, but she’s fucking cool. I think I’m in love…

The track was mastered by Simon Davey, known for his work with popular bands such Daft Punk and Justice — and it sounds like it, too. Apparently of the cold wave – i.e.  a 70′s French variant on post-punk – it’s a “declaration of love for pop.” A recent article sums up the genre,

“Taking advantage from the double efficiency of the do it yourself method and the provocation established by the activist strategy of experimentation which punk had permitted, the new wave recalled at the same time … literature (romanticism, science fiction [...]), the cinema (French New Wave, German Expressionism [...]) and the latest advanced technologies (electronics, robotics, nuclear [...]).”

So, basically, some DIY experimental shit that takes a variety of inspiration and influence from the avant-garde. And the music video, which I highly suggest you check out, follows in line. The end, around 2:22 when the drum kicks in, is really epic.

The 7″ is avaliable on Bandcamp, and comes with one limited edition polaroid. Also, don’t miss Camila’s other sweet band, Peter Kernel. By their own description, “something loud and a few words.” Digging every moment.

Savages is an all-girl post-punk group brought to us from the lovely land of London.  Their buzz has mostly been through word-of-mouth, but their raw girl power personality has sent howls all the way to the U.S., where this cult band is motioning past the horizon of today’s counterculture.

Today’s track from Savages is a B-side titled “Flying to Berlin.” Frontwoman Jehnny Beth’s welcomes the track with sweeping sexiness draped over sharp, propulsive bass guitar and swarming synths. This song smacks us with an indestructible sound, designed with eighties nuances aiming to remind us of an evolving genre that has been somewhat neglected.

Just by listening to this one track, you can assume that these ladies are cool. Their defiant, old-school aesthetic and passionate energy definitely makes this quintet one to follow-up with in 2013. I know I will.

We have a little treat for you today! In celebration of Interpol’s 10th anniversary of their epic album, Turn On The Bright Lights, we’re featuring this lovely old school track, “NYC.”

Back in 2002, I used to love Interpol. Paul Banks’ deep voice with Daniel Kessler. Those dark and melancholic lyrics. That heavy bass. They were that early 2000s indie rock band. As Pitchfork pointed out, “There were a lot of good bands in New York in 2002, but only one band made this record.” And only one could make a song titled “NYC” and do it justice.

Of course, this album made several critics’ Top 10 lists of 2002 and was honored by Rolling Stones as one  of the Top 100 albums of the 2000s. Today these tracks are still some of my favorite wasted nostalgic songs. Frankly. I miss Interpol, and what Rolling Stone describes as their “glacial beauty.” Listening to The National is a good substitute, but sometimes I wish they weren’t on such a proper hiatus. Maybe this anniversary will kick off something new and epic.

You can once again enjoy their tracks, fully remastered in a beautiful deluxe reissue including extra photos and a whole second disc of bonus tracks, many of which were unreleased. Pretty sweet deal if I say so myself. Indulge your younger self.

Back in 2002, I used to love Interpol. Paul Banks’ deep voice with Daniel Kessler. Those dark and melancholic lyrics. That heavy bass. They were that early 2000s indie rock band. As Pitchfork pointed out, “There were a lot of good bands in New York in 2002, but only one band made this record.” And only one could make a song titled “NYC” and do it justice.

Of course, this album made several critics’ Top 10 lists of 2002 and was honored by Rolling Stones as one  of the Top 100 albums of the 2000s. Today these tracks are still some of my favorite wasted nostalgic songs. Frankly. I miss Interpol, and what Rolling Stone describes as their “glacial beauty.” Listening to The National is a good substitute, but sometimes I wish they weren’t on such a proper hiatus. Maybe this anniversary will kick off something new and epic.

You can once again enjoy their tracks, fully remastered in a beautiful deluxe reissue including extra photos and a whole second disc of bonus tracks, many of which were unreleased. Pretty sweet deal if I say so myself. Indulge your younger self.

Those stumblebum record store moments have come and gone, fading into the histrionics of music. Now, in order to discover great music, we turn to the dredging of the Internet and reliance of bloggers to sift through the sediment to find those rare stones… only to find out that most are fed press releases with power verbs and broad descriptions. (Yep, even us.)

Nonetheless, there are those rare moments of pure discovery when you find that band you have been yearning for. I recently had one of these profound and audio-altering moments when I came across the aptly named Special Explosion, who manage to bounce from Neutral Milk Hotel tendencies to Built to Spill explosions to the very best of Land of Talk’s sincere, but impactful indie rock. Their firebrand indie rock is pervasive, programmed to poses, and straight-up fucking fantastic.

Their debut extended player, entitled “EP” indicates that these young indie rockers are wise beyond their tender years and contain the creative drive to become a huge force in reestablishing Seattle as the center of the rock music universe. Look out for a new record and full-length to come in 2013.

Like the champagne-based cocktail invented by Hemingway, DITA, which stands for Death In The Afternoon, is a tasty Swedish dream pop quartet that is all sorts of crazy when you take a sip. It’s effervescent, new wave music that can’t be really placed.

This DITA remix changes up an indie punk song by Swedish band Dial M for Murder. I’m loving all these old time-y references – Hemingway, Hitchcock. It’s fitting that DITA’s next full-length release is titled KINO, drawing a mixed inspiration from 80s movie soundtracks and French cinema from the 1930s and 40s.

The soon-to-be-released album sounds something like electronic or new wave. M83 here and there, sorta like Kavinsky – but that’d be a stretch. Electronic elements with analong synths, mellow vocals and drum machines. It’s good. No wonder it’s been a pretty eventful year for the band. So far, they’ve been on MTV and Swedish radio. I’m really digging this remix, which isn’t on the album sadly.

It’s been a busy 12 months for Sydney duo Nantes. Aside from releasing two EPs, they’ve run up a string of support (Does It Offend You Yeah?, Manchester Orchestra) and headline shows. If that wasn’t enough, they’ve also announced news of a debut album, due out early next year.

The album’s first single, “Drones,” was released earlier this month, and it ticks all the boxes once again. Their music is an interesting contradiction, combining heavy bass and booming vocals with twinkling synth and keys. This is one of their lighter tracks to date – especially when compared with their previous single “Unsatisfy”. I’d almost describe it as intricate in sections, while the “sing-a-long” section is becoming an enjoyable trademark of the band.

This track is just another reason to give Nantes a good listen, especially given the promise of new material shortly.

I am slightly obsessed with L.A.-based PAPA. It started off as innocent attraction after I saw them perform at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco, but since then it’s become a full-blown “I want you now” kind of crush. Don’t tell my boyfriend.

They recently premiered their new single, “Put Me To Work,” and it’s fantastic. If this is any indication of what their upcoming full-length (out sometime next year) will sound like, I’m incredibly excited.

Put quite simply, PAPA represents everything right about indie rock. They’re kind of Wolf Parade meets Arcade Fire, channeling the best of those two sounds. Just press play to see what I mean.

Chromatics happen to be one of these great artists that got together and submitted new material for the release of After Dark 2, the follow up to a previous compilation of the same name produced by record label Italians Do It Better. After Chromatics dropped their most recent album, Kill For Love, I’ve been looking forward to hearing more from them.

Chromatics established some awesome electronic grooves on Kill For Love, but throughout the album they had some songs that seemed to lack energy and slow down the record at key points. On this new tune, “Looking for Love,” the energy is back. This track is originally around 15 minutes long, but the condensed version is floating around, and it gives a good glance at the song’s point.

Singer Ruth Radelet’s whispery vocals are almost chant like over the polished electronic beat. There are a few slight shifts in the songs structure, but they’re real subtle. It’s a haunting song… and always good to hear that they are still making great music.
