What's so good?

First up, let me clarify that this song was originally written and released by The Weeknd. It was a beautiful song, and inspired many other artists to cover or remix their own versions. Perhaps its best cover came in the form of Coeur de Pirate’s excellent rendition back in August of 2011.

Given that almost two years have passed since that version was released, it was a bit of a surprise to see Salacious Sound bring the remix up earlier this month. When I heard it I assumed it was new, but it turns out that this remix has been sitting in the archives of Soundcloud for roughly six months now.

Fortunately music doesn’t have an expiration date, and I’m quite happy to be bringing this to the forefront of Indie Shuffle right now. Because it’s good :)

What's so good?

Well how’s about this for something unique? Avicii teaming up with Aloe Blacc for a progressive house track with a twist: it’s suitable for a country hoe-down.

Folk, EDM and soul aren’t exactly three genres you’d expect to collide, but these guys have done an excellent job with this new single.

Premiered by Pete Tong on BBC Radio 1 a couple days back, there’s still relatively limited information available regarding the context of this release. Is it part of a new album? A one-off single for next year’s Eurovision competition? Lord knows…

Do you like house? Great, then you are reading exactly the right blog post. I’d like to take a second to introduce Lane 8, aka Daniel Goldstein, a San Francisco resident. Just dropping new single “Be Mine” via Anjunadeep, this kid should be on everyone’s radar.

Heavy bass lines hit early on, setting the dance floor for an enigmatic slur of beats and vocal snippets. The question “Would you be mine?” is proposed over and over, to which I will go on the record saying efffffffff yes, I would — if this mystery man looks anything like his sultry voice sounds. The melody takes a horizontal approach to the build, giving way to intelligently designed drop just when the pressure starts to hurt.

This is the kind of feel-good dance/house track that we kids live for (I’m including myself in the “kid” pile, although that’s getting to the questionable stage). The interconnected euphoria a dance floor can feel together amongst perfect strangers is something not easily crafted, but the rising Lane 8 has arguably reached this milestone.

Mike Norris – or Fort Romeau – has grown to become one of my favorite deep house producers as of late. From his remixes to his original releases, this dude continuously impresses me with his knack for solid beat building and shifty-yet-spacious rhythms that always tend to latch on and take me for an audible ride.

This Londoner’s most recent track, “Jetée,” is a mid-tempo electronic dance number that’s laced with copious amounts of steady bass and fluid house beats, taking you straight to the dance floor to get a lil weird. Do yourself a favor and take peep this track – “it’s fit for both large soundsystems and epic summer travels.” Jump on it.

Consider this your first introduction to a collaborative album that will surely crop up a few more times: Verve Remixed – The First Ladies. Released by the Verve Music Group this coming July, the album features remixes from the likes of RAC, Pretty Lights, Flume, Kaskade, C2C, and of course Toro Y Moi.

If you hadn’t gathered, the remixes center around some of the great female vocalists of all time, including Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, Sarah Vaughan, Marlena Shaw and many more. Oh, and of course, Billie Holiday.

Toro Y Moi’s remix takes the 1920s/1940s classic “My Man” and turns it completely on its head. Gone are the classic jazz piano elements, and in their place a modern electronic twist a la Rudimental or Disclosure.

Net result? Amazingness. Pretty much can’t wait for Toro Y Moi’s new album.

In any situation possible, putting together the words “Mirror,” “Kaleidoscope,” “Psychemagik,” and “Sunset” would conjure images and feelings of breathtaking, psychedelic, colorful things; pleasures, dreams and hopeful escapades. Strange how one needn’t even press “play” to hear “Kaleidoscope” — the imagination has already done the work.

All the more fulfilling then is the driving melody of Psychemagik’s superb remix, which may just ignite your soul. No offense to Mirror People, but this version is wholly more enjoyable then the original track as it pushes and pulls in all the right places, and the delicate ambiance softly envelops the space between the diverse instrumentation.

Although not completely dissimilar from the version we’ve heard on his debut LP ƒIN, this version of John Talabot’s “So Will Be Now…” is a bit more mastered in its subtle variations of smooth deep house beats, rhythmic tempos, and velvety textures. Once this song gets to its meatier parts, you can immediately feel your body start to pulsate to the tranced-out grooves. This reaction is something that John Talabot always manages to pull off with ease – especially when he’s collaborating with Pional.

The latest rising star from the Swedish house music scene is 19-year-old songwriter/producer/remixer Lucas Nord. He is the grandchild of jazz clarinet virtuoso Putte Wickman, so he naturally has music running through his blood.

To be honest, I’ve been very bored with the house music scene these days; however, the production Lucas Nord delivers and the vocals from fellow Swedish talent Tove Lo on “Run On Love” make for a perfect summer electro jam. While there is nothing fancy going on, the track’s simple progression and subtle changes align to finally bring me back to the house music scene once again — or at least for now.

The newest single “Run On Love” will be officially released on June 10, 2013 via Hybris record label.

Following up our review on LO’s banger remix of “Let Her Go” comes the next Passenger edit from Eagles & Butterflies, aka Chris Barratt.

On this remix, Barratt creates a rolling soundscape to Passenger’s “All The Little Lights” — a pleasant folk track with a 60s sound that takes on a new brilliance with some electronic production.

With support from DJs like Danny Howells, Tale Of Us, and Tone Of Arc, this is probably my favorite from Barratt thus far. It’s the perfect sound for happiness, so tune in and enjoy!

At this point you can consider me pretty overwhelmed. Why? Because it’s the Tuesday after Memorial Day in the United States, and there’s a thorough deluge of new music. I’ve decided to let most of it settle in for a day or two, but had to do a double-take on this Toro y Moi remix.

Tackling Disclosure’s “You & Me,” this is the first time Toro Y Moi has stepped into the limelight for quite some time now (at least to my recent memory). What’s beautiful is that this remix not only retains the dancey themes of the original, but also throws in Chad’s signature jazz twist.

Two thumbs up for this one.

What's so good?

Rudimental has easily become a group that I can rely on to produce great music. This UK foursome has already become pretty well known for their ear-melting hits “Not Giving In” and “Feel The Love,” but with the help of MNEK and Sinead Harnett, they have thrown down a funkafied track titled “Baby” that’s definitely worth your attention.

You might recognize Sinead Harnett’s voice from her work with Disclosure – a sound that doesn’t stray too far out of her comfort zone of hypnotizing house and R&B rhythms. These gorgeous vocals, combined with the flirtatious dance productions of Rudimental, seamlessly intertwine, and make the track harmonious and unsurprisingly brilliant.

What's so good?

I just spent a month living in Amsterdam, and not once did it cross my radar that Vicetone were from a city nearby called Groningen. Perhaps that’s because we’ve never actually featured them on Indie Shuffle, even though for me, their name is totally familiar.

So in light of that, it’s high time we give them their debut on the website. And what better way than with their progressive house remix of Matthew Koma’s “One Night.”

The original song – driven by poppy synth work and Matthew’s fun.-esque vocals — actually managed to hit #12 on the charts in Ukraine, of all places. It’s definitely a bit cookie cutter, but works well intertwined with house twist added by Vicetone.

The official remix will be available in the United States on May 21st, but those of you in Europe can grab it on iTunes now.

What's so good?

Remixes of Ellie Goulding might be dime a dozen, but that doesn’t mean that some can’t stand out as slightly more interesting. Such is the case for Special Features’ take on “Only You,” the fourth track from Ellie’s recent album Halcyon.

What makes this one good? In my mind, simple synth progressions, catchy harmonies and a pretty good buildup. Beyond that, it’s actually pretty straightforward — in a bit of a Madeon way.

What's so good?

Highlighting both established artists and a few fresh faces, Hernan Cattaneo‘s label, Sudbeat, offers up its first ever compilation.

Available via Beatport, it’s a well-rounded collection of warm tech house and melodic deep house, all with a journey-esque feel. On a whole, the vibes are fairly dark, true to techno’s roots, but with all of that deep introspective determination in one place things can start to feel a bit murky. It’s nice to be able to pull your head up once in a while, and “Merkabah” offers that breath of fresh air.

Once again, Eagles & Butterflies crafts a tune that is as hopeful as it is curious. “Merkabah” is progressive in that its future forward-thinking beat will have you pondering all you can accomplish in life, rather than the opposite. I find it to be the stand-out track on the compilation, but I urge you to be your own judge.

What's so good?

“Wake Up Call” is just a little tease of a snippet, but a massive tune nonetheless. In all its neoclassic glory, progressive synth sounds build with a classic house beat and make for an energized club hit.

First we heard from Elef, aka Eleftherios Kousakis, was this Detroit Swindle remix released via Dirt Crew. Now he’s back with “Wake Up Call,” forthcoming via Local Talk, the Swedish label that first tuned us in to HNNY.

Now, either my investigative skills are working poorly this afternoon or the elusive German producer has fallen off the digital grid. As far as personal profiles go, he hasn’t got a lot I can link you to, but if you’re on Beatport you can keep up on his latest releases there. Enjoy!

What's so good?

I’m going through an “I don’t love anything phase,” which usually means I’m about to shift musical gears; this also usually means musical gears are shifting, via collective conscious and the like.

I’ve been intrigued by a slight resurgence of trance for some time, and while I wouldn’t exactly call Rone (nor this Stamusic. remix) trance, I would maybe call it nu trance.

Both artists demonstrate a progressive, melodic approach, relying on a snowball effect of fuzzy synths and a nice choice of chord changes to carry the song. It’s slightly uneventful, and I don’t love it, but do I like it. There’s a nice vibe and a refreshing break weaving in and out of the melody — kind of like hypnosis.

I would suggest also scoping out the original, as it comes with a pretty nifty video. Enjoy!

Somewhere in the world there’s a balcony, a producer named Eagles & Butterflies, and some kind of perfect synthesis happening between his production and Lana Del Ray’s voice.

E&B’s edit of “Born To Die” sounds more like doves flying or waterfalls falling in slow motion — in other words, it’s effortlessly natural and completely serene.

It’s not every day that a new artist slams on the scene with an identity strong enough to turn heads. Starting off on with a solid footing, Eagles & Butterflies, aka Chris Barratt, has done just that.

Barratt’s melodies are hard to ignore, they have a transformative effect — reshaping an otherwise minimal track into a massively expansive feeling. Barratt keeps other common denominators around as well. Like a proper tag, his jet-like transitions and airy vocals find themselves into almost every production. Barratt’s a beacon in the storm of an already over-saturated music industry; he keeps it bright and recognizable — bringing you back to a place you know and love.

Sample the variety of flavors off Bedrock’s latest compilation Underground Sound of Miami Series 2 album here — an altogether great listen; Barratt standing out strong with “Pharaoh” and “Sphinx.”

Couldn’t get enough of Bondax’s “Gold” the first time around? Neither could we.

Kentucky native and Indie Shuffle regular Amtrac offers up his edit of the explosive track. Like a prequel to Bondax’s more sobered original, Amtrac extracts the excitement of the hunt – before one discoveries that gold is just not enough.

What's so good?

Deep house is really starting to dominate clubs in the UK, and Londoners Dusky have quickly risen to the forefront of the scene.

With tracks like “Dummy,” it’s not hard to see why. Combining a deep, almost menacing bass line with high, tense strings, this one is all about the suspense. And that certainly works a treat on the dance floor, as this correspondent can attest to.

“Dummy” is the highlight of the Nobody Else EP, which has just come out on Aus. But we’d really recommend checking out the whole EP; it’s one of the best deep house productions this year.

What's so good?

Another web mystery slowly unraveled. Earlier this year, the blogs were a-buzz wondering who was behind the CLOSE project. It immediately reminded me of The Weeknd – music deeply steeped in visuals and an artist wrapped in anonymity. And while I’m not usually into deep house, when it’s this well-packaged, I had to keep following. I had to know what came next.

By now, it’s been revealed that CLOSE is the brainchild of Will Saul, DJ and owner of sister labels Simple/Aus Music (known for their roots in dub and techno). It’s typical club faire, a project that takes its inspiration from the intricate layers of early 90s techno and the physically intimate setting of such clubs. Will explains,

“I love the futuristic feeling of early Detroit techno – not just the fact that the music was all made on machines but the melancholic/introspective chord progressions combined with the machine driven funk created a quite a special end result and for me is the reason why this strain of dance music still retains its appeal … I wanted to attempt to write an album that you could listen to as a whole and something that you kept discovering layers of details within on repeat listens.”

And with each repeat listen, you do in fact discover and appreciate different layers of details. Try it with sound-cancelling headphones and on loudspeakers with a fat bass — two very different experiences.

CLOSE is an excellent cross-channel project that spans multiple mediums and uses the web as a driving force to build audience interest. It’s always refreshing to see a label use the Internet in a seductive way to entice listeners outside of typical social media marketing. If the website is any indication of what’s to come, you know this is only the beginning.

What's so good?

When sibling duo Blondfire released their Where The Kids Are EP last year, they probably weren’t expecting to have one of their songs turned into a dance-floor electronic track. That’s because most of their original content is pretty low key.

Fortunately, Shreddie Mercury has come to the rescue, flipping this one completely on its head. The result couldn’t stand in stronger contrast to the original. And I’m digging it quite a bit!

Video Game Soundtrack: FIFA 13, Ft. Deadmau5, Santigold + More

Watching soccer players like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo do their thing on the field is truly a thing of beauty. Playing soccer like them is a fantasy come true, and EA Sports supplies the perfect game to do so with their newest release, FIFA 13.

Filled with crazy realistic graphics, an improved game engine, and, of course, Ultimate Team mode, FIFA 13 has enough going on to keep even the most extreme soccer head busy. Some noted tweaks to the game include the addition of a more realistic dribbling experience, as the player can actually control the dribbling instead of it being mainly automated. There’s also more emphasis on possession; more realism and skill have been added to how a player controls (or loses control) of the ball. Another awesome addition has been the team and player form, where what is going on in the world of professional soccer effects player and team ratings on the game (that is, unless your team is having a lousy year).

As for the soundtrack, with soccer being the global game that it is, EA Sports made certain that it would have a global soundtrack. Artists from the UK like Bloc Party and Django Django, New Zealander Kimbra, Spain’s Crystal Fighters, and American artists like Santigold and Deadmau5 trule make FIFA 13 a global affair. The music really serves as the perfect backdrop as you manage your favorite team through Ultimate Team mode, or simply show off your ball skills playing head-to-head with a friend. The songs on this year’s version of the game have truly been one of the best, with a wide variety of music bringing music snobs, soccer fans, and gamers together in one awesome experience.

So before you digitally simulate the beautiful game, check out some of the musical highlights off the FIFA 13 soundtrack below. Who knows, you just might become a better soccer player.
