What's so good?

First up, let me clarify that this song was originally written and released by The Weeknd. It was a beautiful song, and inspired many other artists to cover or remix their own versions. Perhaps its best cover came in the form of Coeur de Pirate’s excellent rendition back in August of 2011.

Given that almost two years have passed since that version was released, it was a bit of a surprise to see Salacious Sound bring the remix up earlier this month. When I heard it I assumed it was new, but it turns out that this remix has been sitting in the archives of Soundcloud for roughly six months now.

Fortunately music doesn’t have an expiration date, and I’m quite happy to be bringing this to the forefront of Indie Shuffle right now. Because it’s good :)

What's so good?

What’s the advantage to being on Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music label? Apart from all the attention you get, it’s probably quite a handy way to get Kanye to serve as executive producer on your album. And such is the case for John Legend’s upcoming album Love In The Future.

“Made To Love” is the first single to be released off the album. It offers a groovy R&B sessions that’s far more sensual than say, for example, Legend’s collaboration with The Roots on “Wake Up.” It’s not my standard taste in music, but I’ve got to admit that the layering and instrumentation on this track is certainly worthy of a listen.

Love In The Future will be available September 3rd.

What's so good?

Neo-soul-classical indie artist Marques Toliver released his album, Land of CanAan, last month, and it is a masterpiece.

I had the liberty of unexpectedly seeing Marques perform live in New York City, and I was blown away. The live show was breathtaking, with Marques effortlessly tearing apart the violin while belting soulful and jazzy melodies; his backing band also brought the funk throughout the show. The crowd was completely engaged.

As for his album, Land of CanAan is an extremely powerful and encapsulating mix of many genres. You have to be pretty fearless to combine soul, jazz, pop, R&B, funk, orchestral, indie, and a little dance all into one album, but Marques does it seamlessly and with gusto. This album absolutely deserves to be on many “Best Of 2013″ lists.

I urge you, don’t sleep on Land of CanAan. It is a gorgeous and moving album bound to stand the test of time.

There’s something to be said when emerging acts like Disclosure are ranting and raving about another artists music. Earlier, the brother duo tweeted about their fellow London native, Dornik, describing him as a “future/Michael Jackson/r n’b/soul/step” artist. Pretty sick to be compared to someone of that stature, right?!

Dornik’s latest single, titled “Something About You,” conjures a lot of evocative emotions with his powerful soul vocals combined with an electronic backbeat and smooth bass. The track is just super easy to vibe to – it’s a smooth-talking R&B song that transports you to a dingy underground nightclub where the lights are down low to keep things extra steamy.

If you’re a fan of sexy croons, vintage-sounding synths and velvety beats I’m pretty sure this song is for you.

What's so good?

Sometimes there’s a track so good, it hurts right down to the inner parts of your bones. For those fans of the 90s R&B renaissance we are experiencing of late in the electronic music world, Advil may be a good remedy for this burner.

From the first vocal note, there is no denying the power of this bass-heavy tune. I’d pick out an element to critique, but I’m mostly trying to maintain eye focus at the moment. The original, released just a few weeks back, carries a swagger which was disbanded by Kaytranada for this remix. Now, normally, that may seem like a negative (because who doesn’t love a little throwback swag?), but this Montreal-based music maker managed to inject copious amounts of dirty, dirty sex appeal. It’s damn near chilling.

Another lovely track from Sango. This time, it’s a bit smoother than his usual Latin-inspired sound, dropping a soul sample from Static Major and Smoke E. Digglera. It’s off the track “If U Scared, Say U Scared,” more commonly known as the backtrack to Drake’s recent hit “Look What You’ve Done.” Sango’s done a dope job flipping the rhythm on its head, a deluxe re-envisioning with juicy synth hitting muted vocals.

Recently in San Diego, Sango will be off playing NYC for the first time ever this weekend. If you’re in the area, I suggest you head to Tribeca Grand Hotel on Saturday. That’s where I’d be.

It seems like the Michigan-based producer is finally going nation-wide. And for good reason. Just check out his recent Robin Thicke remix. Explosive. For more Sango and electronic R&B like this, follow the crew over at Soulection.

Haddaway released “What Is Love (Babay, Don’t Hurt Me)” way back in 1993, and I bet you still have the song buried somewhere in your head.

While the Eurodance track seems like it was probably best-suited for a Eurovision contest, it probably got the majority of its attention from Saturday Night Live’s Night At The Roxbury series. At least, that’s where I got my intro to the song.

Flash forward 20 years, and a relative newcomer by the name of Jaymes Young has decided to put his own spin on the track. The end result is a gentle and heartfelt cover that reminds me a lot of Bastille.

Two thumbs way, way up on this one.

Scoop Deville has risen to be one of my favorite producers in the last few years. From his more popular work with mainstream acts to his bugged out, weird rap to his underground stuff, Scoop knows how to keep things moving in any lane. The fact that he has been relatively quiet as of late makes me think he’s got something brewing.

In addition to being extremely talented and hard working, Scoop is also generous. His soundcloud page is full fo one-off remixes and random things that he’s put up to share with fans. His Scoop-a-Loop remix series, that finds Scoop looping, remixing and reworking tracks from a wide array of styles and genres, has been a favorite of mine.

For his latest addition to that collection, Scoop keeps it gully with the Hall and Oates classic “One on One.” A wise man, Scoop knows Daryl and John already have the magic touch, so he doesn’t need to go in like that. Just some light drums, a chop here and there, and you got a banger fit for a midnight ride to see your hyna in Whittier.

Hailing from Sydney, Australia, Hayden James definitely keeps the lineage of top notch electronic pop alive.

“Permission To Love” is a modern Balearic pop track with funky guitar grooves that remind me a lot of those found on Daft Punk albums Random Access Memories and Discovery.

Joshua Worden’s “Marrow” is a sexy and slow R&B track that’s bound to resonate with anyone who can appreciate a beautifully composed rhythm and blues ballad.

“Marrow” is the first track taken from Joshua’s album, Always This, which was released on June 1. This track has the ability to creep up on you, but in the best way ever. Its soothing and hypnotizing effects are the perfect compliment to a relaxing night in with that special someone. The last few years has seen a resurgence in R&B thanks to an experimental take on the genre from the likes of How To Dress Well, The Weeknd, and James Blake. These artists are just three of a growing community of electronic-influenced soul singers, happily experimenting with a genre most people associate with chart toppers Usher and Chris Brown.

Vicktor Taiwo is the latest artist putting his own spin on modern day R&B with his single “Digital Kids.” The tune is a delicate and atmospheric wonder, with Taiwo’s digitally altered vocals the perfect foil for Londoner Felix Joseph’s haunting, minimalistic beat. The track also contains a verse from underground rapper Solomon, whose slow and methodical flow adds another element to the overall sound of the track. In short, “Digital Kids” is pure musical bliss.

Young Fathers’ “I Heard” evokes an unsettling curiosity as anxious percussion and accordion synths unfold in the first few moments. And then a voice too novel, too beautiful to ignore confesses, “Science is eerie when you’re still around/Killing ya body cause they found you out/Calling the shots and I’m falling down/Look at the dust explode on the ground/Inside I’m feeling dirty/It’s only cause I’m hurting.”

The track’s beauty blocks the filter on first listen; it asks us to get lost in it, before coming back to understand the loss in it. It begs not only for an encore, but for an entire album.

Fortunately there is an entire album, and it’s as unexpected as this track alone. You can hear the entirety of Tape Two, the second EP from Edinburgh-based Young Fathers over on SoundCloud, and show the trio support on Facebook.

I was about to call it a bad music day when “Told You So” by Akua (ah-koo-ah) fortunately crossed my path and reminded me that it can never be a bad day for music.

Off-kilter bells intro on this track, like a mad woman seductively sounding an alarm. The song challenges the senses as it stirs up a cauldron of desire and trouble — both intrinsic and magical in nature — layered with bubbling bass and chiming synths. Akua’s voice commands surprising musical moments and pauses equally. She sings, “City lights are bright, I thought I warned you.”

Fair warning: you’re going to press the repeat button after you hear the drop on this track, I promise you that. The comments on SoundCloud beg for downloads, the people are so addicted they can’t stop listening. You’ll know what I mean.

Weighing in at only 2:08, this funky Janet track has snaps so crisp that you’ll get goosebumps. Deliciously chopped beats warp around a smooth bassline. You’ll even forgive the DJ for not giving you a longer track –the pace is just too right.

Little beats and other assorted remixes from this Dutch producer reside on his SoundCloud. I recommend checking out “S E X Y” if you have a minute — it’s even more of a babymaking piece. The artist is a father, after all…

I’ve been sitting on Bastille’s cover of “Thinking About You” for a couple days now. The first listen totally put me off, but it keeps rearing it’s head, and has grown on me. Enough to share it with you, at least.

The genre itself is particularly hard to peg down: it teeters somewhere between R&B and uhh…electronic? So in light of that, here’s hoping the playlist this song generates doesn’t suck…

What's so good?

Straight from Brooklyn, Arthur Ashin – or Autre Ne Veut – has been making sweet and sexy music since he debuted back in 2010 with a self-titled LP that received an overall positive reception from music critics. This time around, he’s back with a soulful gem of track titled “Counting” from his 2013 release Anxiety.

“Counting” is a smooth R&B song the conjures a lot of feelings through the emotive lyrics, lo-fi electronics and lush falsetto comparable to Tom Krell of How to Dress Well. You can tell that Ashin is earnest in all that he sings about – whether he is pleading about love, death or everything in-between, it’s clear that it’s heartfelt and driven by a certain mood.

This song honestly gets me pretty excited to see what Autre Ne Veut will deliver in the future, and my guess is that if any of it is as good as this track is, we’re in for some smooth, sexy sailing from here on out.

Who is Quadron? They’ve been getting a whole lot of attention lately, but we haven’t put them in the limelight. This collab with Kendrick Lamar sure makes the cut, though.

Believe it or not, these silky R&B tracks are coming from Danish duo Coco Maja Hastrup Karshøj and Robin Hannibal. They released their first album Quadron in 2009, and are gearing up for a release on June 4th titled Avalanche.

If you’re digging what you hear, I’d definitely recommend you check out this track “Sea Salt,” and then pre-order the album here.

Here’s a cool collaboration out of Melbourne for you. Haxx is one-half of electro-pop duo DEJA, which we’ve featured a number of times over the past 12 months. Aside from his remixes of Hermitude and Kimbra (check them out on DEJA’s SoundCloud), he’s started making a name for himself as a producer.

“Memo” is his latest track, a project he worked on with John Jakubenko, vocalist for Melbourne indie pop band Red Ink. Commencing quietly, Jakubenko’s smooth vocals (which were recorded on an iPhone!) are immediately highlighted against a backdrop of delicate percussion and piano, before haxx marks himself on the track. A genuine nu-R&B slow-burner, the rise and fall of the beat combined with the standout vocal interplay (haxx has enlisted the other half of DEJA, Rromarin to give the track a female perspective) makes this well worth a listen.

We’ve recently found ourselves tagging a lot of our articles as “electronic (or electro) soul.” The sound this describes can take two directions. The first is simply beefing up a classic soul sound with percussion and bass — like this Ramadanman remix of Nina Simone. The other style is much more of a mesh of the two. Pursued by the likes of Indie Shuffle favorites Jai Paul or Lapalux, this version of electronic soul has glitchy beats and wonky samples interspersed with more sensual sounds.

The latest purveyor of this second sound is Raffertie. The Birmingham-based producer has received support from the likes of Mary Anne Hobbs and now has an excellent EP, Build Me Up, to go with it. You can grab a copy from Ninja Tune and expect to see the name of Raffertie around these parts a lot more in future!

Rhythm & Dreams II: Classic R&B Remixed

No matter how brilliant a new track is, sometimes we just need to jam to the feel-good memories of old school R&B, when we were digitally disconnected, but connected in the most important way.

Since the last Rhythm & Dreams playlist featured chill electronic, I decided to put together a set of tropical nu disco house with a splash of future garage. This time around Janet Jackson, Brandy, Robin, Beyoncé, Ashanti, Tweet and Mack Morrison get remixed by the honorable keepers of classic R&B. Shout out to writer Elizabeth Walker for featuring a few of these gems on her Nu Disco: Best of 2012 feature.

So press play, put on your swimsuits, grab a sundowner and dance in your room with your favorite people like it’s an honorary paradise. What's so good?

Wowzer. Don’t let the comparison to Frank Ocean or Drake throw you off here – Sunni Colón has done a remarkable job crafting a sound all his own.

Making his debut about a year ago with a mixtape titled Dearly Beloved, Sunni recently released what Hilly Dilly is dubbing “the next chapter” in his musical styling. Indeed, “五.karma” is one of the more robust songs I’ve heard in this realm for a couple months — quite possibly exceeding The Weeknd’s latest attempt “Kiss Land.”

What's so good?

I was originally going to cover Pablo Nouvelle’s “Rolling in the Deep” remix, because, really now, who doesn’t love an Adele remix? Then I got addicted to this slo-mo glitch track “You Do Me Wrong,” and everything changed. I finally understood what Pablo meant when he described his music as a “mix of melancholic pop, modern soul and dance music.” The beats are expressive, the Marvin Gaye sample is hard-hitting.

Pablo Nouvelle – a name inspired by French architect Jean Nouvel and 60s Nouvelle Vauge films — is a Swiss DJ who is heavily influenced by soul from the 60s and 70s. You can hear it come across in all his music: lush cuts woven with arty electronica.

His debut, Winter in Helsinki, is a combination of previous releases with new tracks. They’re nostalgia-inducing tunes, reflective of a maturing artist. I recommend you give a few tracks a listen on SoundCloud.

What's so good?

As you are most probably aware, a collection of tracks posing to be Jai Paul’s debut album recently surfaced online. While most of that has now been cleared, we were left with some remnants which I guess you’d have to consider demos.

One such track is “Zion Wolf,” and for the most part, it sounds exactly like what we’d hoped from the album, finding the invisible strings that link the glitchy electronica of Flying Lotus and Hudson Mohawke with the sensual soul of Prince or D’Angelo. The closest comparison we can make is Frank Ocean, but really Jai is doing entirely his own thing, and that’s part of the reason this is so good.

Although the random release wasn’t exactly out of character, we’ll keep our ears to the ground for something more official coming out, but this is enough to tide us over for now.

Well. I suppose we’ve mastered time travel, because in addition to the recent single released from Destiny’s Child and Justin Timberlake, there’s now a track from the late R&B queen Aaliyah. Srsly, guys, what year is it?

I’m sure many readers out there feel the same way I do, that a new Aaliyah track is a warm welcome, being raised on tunes from the side-bang beauty. Although “Quit Hatin’” doesn’t have quite the charm nor nostalgia as her real discography, it’s definitely a tribute to the artist… minus the *extremely* annoying (yet era appropriate) DJ shoutouts in the background.

Aaliyah’s estate released this tune in honor of the singer’s would-have-been 34th birthday. There’s Interweb chatter about a posthumous album, but official word has yet to been distributed.

What's so good?

ESTA rips a dope sample off of M.I.A.’s “Caps Lock” to put together the sexiest thing we’ve heard since DPAT’s Jeremih refix last week. The track has such a suggestive sound — apparently this was the reject song off SEXTAPE. You can bet his releases are only filled with good stuff!

I’m seriously impressed by all of ESTA’s work. I know we say that a lot, but this guy’s something else. His samples always seem choice, and he almost flawlessly blends the grit with the mellow. Exhibit A: “Silhouette,” featuring a Kendrick Lamar sample, and Exhibit B: “IWannaBeDown,” his take on the illustrious Brandy. Expressive remixes that balance chill with upbeat. If I could fall in love with a sound, I would fall in love with this shit. Makes me miss SoCal – perfect cruising tunes. No doubt he’s from San Diego.
