Major Lazer’s “Get Free” is probably my favorite track out of their camp. Joined by Amber Coffman of The Dirty Projectors, the song spans a variety of genres, landing somewhere between summer and reggae.

Obviously it ain’t the easiest track to remix, but tropical-wave producer Vacationer has taken a hand to the track — and the results aren’t that bad. Mind you, it’s only fitting: the words “vacationer” and “get free” go together quite well!

Anthems are kind of my weakness. Shoot a great one at me, and it’s likely to pierce my music critic soft underbelly, leaving me defenseless to do anything but review it. Tune in Crew’s remix of one of my faves, Matisyahu’s “Live Like a Warrior” (from last year’s Spark Seeker), definitely falls into that category.

Sure, the lyrics are a bit cloying, but they hit with enough heart to make the track feel like a foot stomping, cavalry march into a promise land of your own making. Tune In Crew’s remix certainly amplifies and accentuates that feeling, making the track feel like a swirling hymnal. With Discovery-esque synth-pop production that wouldn’t have been out of place on that band’s equally uplifting “Osaka Loop Line,” Tune in Crew turn “Live Like a Warrior” into a delicious slice of angel pop.

If you don’t know Tune In Crew, you really should. I’ve been following these very active French remix artists since they released one of the only reworks of Adele’s “Rolling In The Deep“ I actually liked. Plus, their ardent support for Jean-Luc Mélenchon in the French Elections on Facebook endlessly endeared me to them.

Song: Dre Skull - First Time (Ft. Megan James & Popcaan) [download here]

On Brooklyn producer Dre Skull’s new track, “First Time,” Megan James steps out behind the veil of Purity Ring to prove once again that the haunting wistfulness of her voice can stand strong outside the auto-tuned aesthetic of the band. James’ delectable vocals over Dre Skull’s dark pop arrangements act like a clarion call to the weak parts of your heart, fortifying them for new journeys.

Including James and the Purity Ring legacy that swirls around her is a smart move.  Just her appearance on a track like this provides a multifaceted look at the yearning of lyrics, like, “You will never cease from exploring.” James may hold the beacon of light on the song’s trajectory, but following behind her you see her knees are dripping with blood from crawling through broken glass to grab that torch. James’ history and vocal talents give the track an earned authenticity.

It’s just too bad Popcaan had to come along. Ugh, his reggaeton/Jamaican english is totally unintelligible, and it’s a testament to the power of Dre Skull/James’ collab (and just how much their lyrics speak to me) that I’m willing to go into the happy place in my head for 20 seconds and pretend Popcaan isn’t on the track. I’m certain all future remixes will wipe him clean out of the song.

I thought I’d immediately miss Amber Coffman’s voice on this rework of “Get Free” with Chronixx’s vocals layered over, and probably I do, but this track reminds me of how powerful the production is on its own.

The vibrant tremble of Coffman’s voice surprisingly paired with the “Get Free” beat is what made the original track so brilliant. On the other hand, Chronixx’s soothing reggae rhythm fits in seamlessly with the backdrop on “Where I Come From,” and it’s as if you can hear Coffman’s voice in the distance.

Maybe it would have been beautiful to hear them all together, but the rework brings a soothing, sensual groove on its own — and when Chronixx pushes his voice, it’s magic.

Written originally as a poem by Jimmy Donoway in 1972 and recorded as a #1 hit by the great Errol Dunkley, “Black Cinderella“ has a fabled history as a reggae anthem that pays tribute to the beauty of a black woman’s soul and unseen sacrifices.

The life of that original is preserved and expanded in the most delicious of ways by Jamaican up-and-comers The Courtney John Project. Through a burlesque chillstep rework that’s endlessly classy, they introduce the song to a whole new generation of listeners.

The band calls their style Roostronic: one part Kingston mash-up, one part Euro-electronica & 100% provocative in its approach to contemporary music. You can definitely see that in play on “Black Cinderella,” which preserves the structure of Dunkley’s take but expands its world dramatically.

In the spaces left by Dunkley, you now find twinkling synths and a little bit of that wobble wobble to stir up the soul. As soon as the piano graces the first bridge, you’ll find that the track has taken a whole new urgency. The Courtney John Project has just added a whole new level of yearning to the tracks emotional world.

I haven’t studied much of its history, but I’m damn glad I get to enjoy music like “Take Control.” It comes to you from six Englishmen who call themselves By The Rivers. Formed in Leicester in 2010, By The Rivers cites Bob Marley, The Gladiators, and Culture as inspirations.

Here’s what By The Rivers had to say about “Take Control”:

“‘Take Control’” was written around the time of the 2010 Government elections in the UK and is an emotive song expressing the frustrations of voices not being heard when Government change was so desperately needed. The political sentiments are artfully juxtaposed by big brass sounds, a flowing reggae beat and soft melodic vocals, creating a ridiculously addictive and deeply insightful tune.

“‘Take Control’” was written around the time of the 2010 Government elections in the UK and is an emotive song expressing the frustrations of voices not being heard when Government change was so desperately needed. The political sentiments are artfully juxtaposed by big brass sounds, a flowing reggae beat and soft melodic vocals, creating a ridiculously addictive and deeply insightful tune.

Well isn’t this pretty effing sweet? Jonny Pierce from The Drums has decided to take his efforts solo, and today we have a mashup of first single “I Didn’t Realise” from his forthcoming debut Mistaken (out in 2013).

This mashup, featuring Part Time, Alle Norton, and UB40, showcases a refreshing lo-fi spin on traditional chillwave, with nostalgic nods to the hazy psych days. Setting itself apart from the original, this version’s reggae-inspired loops are reverberated through layers of synth and washed-out vocals that are perfectly tuned and altogether praise-worthy. Although there isn’t much detail about the track itself, it’s clear that this mashed-up version will catch on amongst other blogs within the next couple of days.

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Pierce states:

“I consider Part Time the best band around right now and also one of the most underrated and overlooked. I asked them to do a remix and I just got the response, ‘Do you like UB40?’ He ended up having his girlfriend work on it and this is what we got! Hold on for that glorious swell at the end.”

J.Period got massive respect back when he released a three-part mixtape called The Messengers. Featuring tributes to Fela Kuti, Bob Marley and Bob Dylan, the collection showcased his respect and skill (check out an amazing example with “Don’t Think Twice“).

Major Lazer’s hit “Get Free” featuring Amber Coffman of the Dirty Projectors is a song that I can honestly say is one of my favorites of 2012. Not only are we seduced with hypnotic, reggae-infused beats that Major Lazer repeatedly delivers, but we are captured by Coffman’s gorgeous vocals that are layered on top of an already catchy hook.

To make things even more beefy, I give to you a hot remix of “Get Free” dipped and flipped by Australian duo What So Not. These guys take the track, add some hydraulic beats, pepper in beguiling up-tempo synths, and kick it into high gear with booming bassline effects. The original version of Reptar’s “Houseboat Babies” is so great, it’s a wonder how the vibe could get any better. But Chrome Sparks has flipped the script, literally.

Let’s just say that if both versions were an intro to a rad 80′s movie, the original “Houseboat Babies” would be like Sixteen Candles and the Chrome Sparks remix would be like like The Chocolate Wars, or something. It’s the difference between romantic comedy and dark comedy.

I grew up with No Doubt, and the influence Gwen Stefani had on my upbringing was phenomenal. It superseded any reasonable or rationale approach to music; in my eyes she could do no wrong. Thus, whatever music her or No Doubt brought to the table, I accepted as an outburst of her vibrant creative persona. In other words, if she did it, I would find the good in it.

This is the band’s first collaboration since 2001. Hard to believe 10 years have passed between albums, but it’s easy to forget when No Doubt is pretty much a household name.

Their title track, “Settle Down” was produced by Diplo, owner of Mad Decent, so it’s no surprise that Baauer got the “Harlem Shake” down on that one. His remix is a fun little number that seems a pretty soft approach for Baauer, but I’m enjoying this light-hearted side of his.

No Doubt’s new album, Push And Shove, is due for release on September 24.
