What's so good?

The tag-team producers from Miami, Matt Toth and Julio Mejia, aka GTA, are on a mission: death to genres. With releases on A-Trak’s, Diplo’s, and Laidback Luke’s labels, GTA have been creatively flippin’ tunes from random genres into trappy, electronic, rump shaking tracks. One example is the Phoenix “Fences” remix.

As this GTA remix, via Ultra Records, was originally released as the “Van Roth” remix, GTA have added some nasty hi-hats, super low-end bass, and some smooth strings to the already mellower electronic track by Kaskade & Deadmau5 to give it a chilled trappy vibe.

My reticence with José González has always come from annoyance that so many people thought The Knife were covering him when they performed “Heartbeats.” Scores of impassioned conversations later — and artificially inflating the YouTube numbers of The Knife’s vids by pointing at the screen and going “See! See! I told you!” — I and others I know still haven’t convinced people it’s the other way around. Liz Lemon eyeroll of the century, people.

So, for years now, I’ve sat quiet about the tracks that make my heart gush for González, until this Dinner Date remix of my favorite track, “Crosses,” brought me out of the critics closet. House remixes of folk tracks are a bit of a craze these days, between Oliver Koletzki’s remix of HVOB’s “Always Like This“ and Richard Aarden’s take on Ben Howard’s “Bones“ dominating my soundscape lately.

Still, it takes some skill to get the recipe right. These remixes are all about filling the empty space with new life, while not detracting from the dreamy tenderness of the original. Put another way, the folk versions are like gentle caresses in a lazy, Sunday morning afterglow, and the remixes are like recharging for a second round — do it right and you can give the track a second romp around the mind; which, incidentally, is what Dinner Date does so well.

What's so good?

Major Lazer’s “Get Free” is probably my favorite track out of their camp. Joined by Amber Coffman of The Dirty Projectors, the song spans a variety of genres, landing somewhere between summer and reggae.

Obviously it ain’t the easiest track to remix, but tropical-wave producer Vacationer has taken a hand to the track — and the results aren’t that bad. Mind you, it’s only fitting: the words “vacationer” and “get free” go together quite well!

What's so good?

When I first heard this song yesterday, I didn’t think “woah, this is definitely SOTD material.” But after a couple listens today, I’ve come around.

Goldroom has done a marvelous remix of Owl Eyes’ “Jewels & Sapphires,” and while it’s not necessarily the catchiest song you’ll hear all day, I think the quality stands for itself.

For context, the song be released on a remix EP coming soon from Owl Eyes. Hopefully it’s not five versions of the same track…because this one will steal the cake.

Well, the flood gates are open, and the remixes are flowing in. Let’s not sigh and roll our eyes just yet – The Golden Pony are giving this remix justice.

While it’s only been two days since the album Random Access Memories has leaked, we now have our first of many remixes to come.

The Golden Pony has remixed “Doin’ It Right” (one of my favorite tracks on the album, by the way) into more of a summer pop jam while infusing bright electronic beats to warm you up. All in all, I’m a fan.

Texan Andrew “There Will Be Booty” Hoke, aka Bird Peterson, is part of the Mad Decent/ Teenage Riot fam who has been mastering the art of bass, before Ace of Bass, and advocating the youthful nation to bounce for years now. I was first introduced to him through his trunk popping alias, Drankenstein, back in March via his SXSW mix – you should check it out.

Finally, after months of heckling, Bird Peterson came through with the freshest remix of Lil Troy’s “Wanna Be A Baller.” This track will take you way back to when you were sittin’ fat down south in 99′ sippin on capri suns after school — at least, it did for me. While keeping the OG’ness of the song in tack and in true Bird Peterson/Drankenstein form, he adds the low-end, booty shakin’ bass and rhythm that will get the twenty inch blades on thee impala spinning, and might even get you laid tonight.

So I’m gonna hit the highway and make money the fly way, but if you like what you’re hearing, booty shake on over to his SoundCloud page to cop more Drankenstein juice.

Tune In Crew are a duo producing music from Strasbourg, France, known for remixing a wide variety of artists, ranging from Adele to Matisyahu. Today I bring you their remix of “Where The Kids Are” by rising indie pop artist Blondfire.

This remix keeps the track’s indie pop roots while moving guitar and keyboard sections of the song around. It also keeps Erica Driscoll’s vocals, which create an innocent atmosphere throughout the song.

After a barnstorming end to 2012, including the release of one of the best house tracks that year, Zed Bias has been a little quiet over the last few months. However, the Manchester producer has now returned, under his Maddslinky alias, with this remix of “Annie’s Song” by Alix Perez.

Centering around a vocal hook asking “Is it real this time?” this is quintessential Zed, effortlessly joining the dots between classic piano house, UK garage and deep house. Predictably, the recipe works. No doubt about it, this will go off in a club.

What's so good?

First I heard of the multi-talented Chicago producer The GTW, aka James King, was a 2010 release called Don’t Smoke The Cigarette. The album was an highly engaging combination of hip-hop, R&B, and electronic elements produced mostly by himself and a few friends, “Half-way Freaks” being one of the stand-out tracks. Those productions, paired with King’s distinctive voice and thought-provoking, sometimes playful, lyrics set The GTW aside as something special.

I was lucky enough to meet and work with James around 2011, and let me say, his presence is as large and as great as his looming stature. In other words, there’s something about King that kind of takes your breath away. Possibly it’s his boundless creativity, his keen style, or just how sure he is about his craft. We formed a bond based on mutual artistic appreciation and I’ve kept up with him since then.

Originally from Nigeria and growing up as a young transplant in Chicago seems to have built an amalgamation of styles now intrinsic to Kings approach, something that he likes to call, “Chigerian.” His latest endeavor is a rework of fellow Chicagoan Tink, ”When I’m Lit.” It’s highly successful in that it far surpasses the original, it demonstrates King’s rolling tribal beats, and hints at his R&B and Chicago house influences.

I’ll forgive you if you confused this song for RAC’s remix of “Blue Jeans” by Lana Del Rey, but that’s exactly the reason I’m posting it.

To date, the countless reincarnations of Daft Punk’s infectious “Get Lucky” have for the most part sounded like the original. But with this version Jack London has — at least for the first minute or so — transformed the track into something unrecognizable.

Here’s hoping you’re not too sick of the original to listen to a great remix.

Sometimes, when hearing a new song for the very first time, it will immediately stimulate and excite your nerves, similar to feeling the pheromones of a beautiful woman for the first time — well, almost.

Currently my favorite, and I hate labeling people as “favorite,” DJ crews out of France, C2c, has remixed a track from -M- called “Mojo.”

C2C’s remix of ”Mojo” is a super funky French electronic-rock jam that keeps my ears well stimulated. The track features crunchy guitar riffs incorporated with record scratching all backed by a fat bass line.

This remix will see many plays from me — I might even play it out, nah…

Gigamesh released his remix of Crystal Fighters’ “You & I” approximately two days ago, and I’ve had it on repeat since then. Sure it’s sort of long at nearly 6 minutes, but the upbeat tempo makes that quite easy to overlook.

The song comes as Crystal Fighters prepare to release their new album Cave Rave on May 27th. It’s looking to be a pretty legit release –to date we’ve featured three songs from their camp, including “You & I,” “Separator” and the infectious “Wave.”

We helped to showcase Scottish producer Lockah to a wider audience when we shared his excellent Lana del Rey remix. Since that time, he’s gone on to hone his style, with trademark gliding synths leading to some excellent releases on Mad Decent and Mishka.

His latest track, a remix of Jaw Jam‘s “The Truth,” is being given away for free by XLR8R, who describe it as “part G-funk workout and part space-age-R&B adventure.”

It’s nice to see the development in Lockah’s style, and we look forward to hearing more from this talented producer in the future.

What's so good?

I’m pretty sure that in the past I’ve suggested that Maribou State is one of my favorite remix artists out there (their original work is also pretty bomb). However, this rendition of Fatboy Slim’s “Praise You” leaves me a little uncertain…

The song begins with roughly 1 minute of ambling build-up, giving no hint of the underlying original. Which means that by the time Fatboy Slim’s recognizable vocals are introduced at 1:45, the listener finds themselves easing a sigh of relief.

From there, the song doesn’t really do too much more. There’s some fun warbling bass around 2:40, and the percussion is certainly nice. But overall, I walked away from this one slightly disappointed.

So, why the hell am I sharing it? Because for the unsuspecting listener, I think this one’s going to fit incredibly well in a playlist on downtempo / easy-listening music. While not served best as a standalone, Maribou State’s take on “Praise You” deserves a spot on Indie Shuffle.

Love it or hate it, another LDR remix is here. This remix is from one of my favorite West Coast electro-house producers, Myndset.

Myndset’s version of “Young & Beautiful” is totally different from the original in the sense that it doesn’t actually make me drowsy or sulk in deep thoughts. I’m pretty sure it was a dead giveaway when Myndset’s name was involved that you were going to get a high octane electro banger.

While I am still a LDR fan, it’s safe to say I like the remixes better — for whatever that’s worth.

To celebrate the release of one of the year’s biggest dance anthems, “Reverse Skydiving,” deep house supergroup Hot Natured are giving away French house cats Benoit and Sergio‘s version of the song for free, and it’s actually better than the original.

Hat-tip to Pitchfork, where we first saw the track, who had this to say:

“They’ve re-molded the relatively bite-size tune into seven minutes that encapsulate their own electro-romantic manifesto. Plenty of beautifully streaked synth stabs abound, as does a chopped-up take of Englund’s vocal that’s reminiscent of Ricardo Villalobos’ classic 2008 single ”Enfants (Chants).”

This afternoon I’ve been bombarded with amazing tracks that are all screaming to be at the forefront of our Shuffler attention. While all those tracks are cued up and waiting to wow your ears, this new remix from LO has won in most re-plays in an hour, I mean, for me that is – I’m in love with “Let Her Go.”

We’ll have to thank Passenger for the poignant lyrics, “Only know you’ve been high when you’re feeling low, only hate the road when you’ve been missing home, only know you lover her when you let her go, and you let her go.” But LO builds an amazing atmosphere that dances between modern indietronic, house, and bass influences. For me, that retro synth is the cake topper — it’s killin’ me. The full package is one monumental remix from the German producer.

I know we are all going crazy with Daft Punk madness as we anxiously await the release of Random Access Memories. Whether it’s scrutinizing the authenticity of releases or waiting for surprise appearances at musical festivals, we are all caught up in the hype. And why not? It’s been a long time coming.

This excitement has also carried over to producers and other musicians (See Daughter’s cover of “Get Lucky“ or Drop Out Orchestra’s edit).

Today we are premiering another take on “Get Lucky” by our favorite Dallas producer, Neo-Safari. Neo-Safari has hopped in his DeLorean and taken “Get Lucky” straight back to 1997, making the track sound like it could have been a B-side from Homework. He minimized the vocals of Pharrell, and filled the track with some 70s-infused electric guitar care of some samples taken from Vanderway’s edit — all while managing to make the track hit just a little bit harder than the original. This is definitely a winner.

So until Random Access Memories drops, enjoy this time warp of a remix. Long live French house!

The Solarris remix of James Blake’s “Retrograde” we featured recently went down a treat, so we thought we’d share his version of How To Dress Well’s “& It Was You.”

In a similar vein to “Retrograde,” the melancholic atmosphere of the original is worked into something else, with a disco styled bassline and upped tempo leading to something that falls firmly in the “soulful dance music” camp.

Like the James Blake one, Solarris, joined by Xaao, is once again being generous and giving this away for free over at his Soundcloud.

What's so good?

Remixes of Ellie Goulding might be dime a dozen, but that doesn’t mean that some can’t stand out as slightly more interesting. Such is the case for Special Features’ take on “Only You,” the fourth track from Ellie’s recent album Halcyon.

What makes this one good? In my mind, simple synth progressions, catchy harmonies and a pretty good buildup. Beyond that, it’s actually pretty straightforward — in a bit of a Madeon way.

As if Chief Keef wasn’t grimey enough, this “Love Sosa (RL Grime remix)” is just wicked. If you are a fiend for trap remixes and gnarly drops, RL Grime is going to please you with this one.

Young Henry Steinway, who has put his own spin on the famous childhood author RL Stine for his stage name, is doing his thing here. This “Love Sosa” remix feels like it could be background music in a Goosebumps audio book , like “Stay Out of The Basement“ or maybe “Revenge of the Lawn Gnomes.” Of course, Chief Keef would be playing the protagonist instead of some wimpy kid from the ‘burbs. Now there’s something I would read!

I haven’t heard any Chief Keef remixes like this, and RL Grime does a solid job turning the Chicago hood anthem into a trap beat for the club.

We’re enjoying this remix that The Tailors have done of 70s legend George Benson’s “Give Me The Night.”

Given the direction a lot of house music has been moving in lately, it makes sense to refer to one of the original fathers of funk. That’s exactly what the Dutch duo has done, creating a track that sits between deep house and nu disco, bringing the 70s classic up to contemporary standards.

What's so good?

If there’s one thing I am always craving, it’s beats. And Future Classic solidly delivers on them.

A month ago, Australian artist Touch Sensitive dropped the track “Pizza Guy” to great fanfare. The release had come off a lot of hype after being featured (as the first track!) in a Goldroom mix and a Classixx curated selection of tracks. It is, for the record, a great song deserving of the attention. It is also somewhat of a disco club banger, if you will.

However, Lauer’s fresh take proves the track has legs, or maybe crust. Where the original “Pizza Guy” strays into nu-disco territory, Lauer’s rework renders it more deep house. This is especially apparent in the introduction, which switches from a Com Truise-sounding industrial synth to a more viscous house beat. Each song can stand independently of the other, so listen to both and see which you prefer!

Don’t get me started on the name, though. The genres are tagged under “Pizza Disco” and “Intergalactic Pizza”– is this going to be a thing?

Lars Vamos and Andinger Art make up the duo known as Vamos Art. Based out of Germany, these guys have been holding it down for some time in their home town. But it seems that now they’re intent on sharing with the rest of the world what Stuttgart already knows.

Their edit of “Good Vibrations” brings the Beach Boys to a new level of sexy, stomping deep house vibes and is probably the best Beach Boys edit I’ve heard since the Pet Sounds released The Beach Boys vs. J Dilla.
