What's so good?

Mikal Cronin, mostly known for his fuzz guitar work in various Ty Segall bands, is now currently breaking out into Indie Rock’s collective consciousness. His first self-titled album was a delicately crafted album from the opening notes. It really popped out of nowhere for me.

In that regard, I saw this album coming from a mile away. After it was released last week or so, I was still impressively surprised at how great of a songwriter Cronin is. This whole album reminds me sometimes of The Byrds and then other times sounds like a stripped down Nirvana tune. All these influences coalesce into some of the best Pop Rock I’ve heard in a while. He even manages to throw in some noise guitar while you’re not paying and it all makes perfect sense. Check this album out now!

What's so good?

The Orwells’ first appearance on Indie Shuffle was back August 2012 with “Mallrats(La La La),” which was one of my favorite rock songs of 2012. The five youngsters are now a year older, yet still true to their punk rock style.

Today I present you with their new single, “Other Voices,” produced by Dave Sitek (of TV On The Radio). This track has great guitar riffs, power drumming and loud vocals that power the song — it’s an awesome anthem for the summer.

The Orwells may be releasing a new album this summer, so watch out for that. Check the band’s website for more information and tour dates.

What's so good?

If you feel like a bit of good ol’ dirty rock today, have I got a treat for you. Sydney-based five-piece The Jones Rival have been around for a few years, honing a upbeat rock sound which could easily be from a bygone era.

With a couple of tracks in the bag already, they’ve just released their strongest to date, the barnstorming “Jumpin’ Frog.” The band reference the Rolling Stones as an influence, and you could almost picture Mick Jagger fronting them, given the swagger levels they produce on this single. Plenty of heavy guitar riffs and driving percussion are finished off with powerful, howling vocals — it’s nothing new, but these guys do it really well.

The Jones Rival are currently finishing up their debut EP, which is due out in the second half of the year.

The Jones Rival are currently finishing up their debut EP, which is due out in the second half of the year.

Adult Swim just dropped a compilation of some great garage rock bands playing brand new tunes. This tune is from King Tuff and Gap Dream, and it has a nice mix of both of their unique styles; King Tuff is on vocals and guitar, and Gap Dream provides some interesting instrumental elements.

Also on the free comp are the Black Lips, King Khan, Jeff The Brotherhood, Thee Oh Sees, Mikal Cronin, and Austin’s own OBN III’s. What's so good?

Out of all the great Aussie indie-rock bands going around, Glass Towers are one of my favorites. Their summery debut “Jumanji” was followed by the heavier riffs of “Tonight,” a change-up I really thought worked for them. The Sydney four-piece have returned again with another single, their first release since their debut EP, Collarbone Jungle, dropped midway through last year.

“Halcyon” sits somewhere in-between their earlier material, with glittering guitar work quickly making way for frantic, driving choruses. Vocally, it’s excellent, with Benjamin Hannam’s range getting a thorough workout – falling from (almost) falsetto tones to his more well-known deeper voice.

Before their album drops, the band will be heading over to the Great Escape in the UK (after completing their Australian shows supporting the Kooks). Glass Towers debut LP Halcyon Days is due out in July.

What's so good?

Take a dash of Phil Elverum, a splash of Daniel Johnston, and maybe a hint of Broken Social Scene, and you cook up singer-songwriter Daniel Gélinas, the man behind lo-fi pop rock project YouYourself&i.

With his repetitive guitar strumming and soft whispers that almost sound like pillow chatter to ex-lovers, his work will hit you like yesterday’s longing. This featured song, PLASTICITY, is indicative of a ‘wealth of talent’ wrapped up in that Montreal indie goodness. As Zach Hart* over at We Listen for You explained,

“I’m guilty of great hyperbole, but I promise, no matter what type of music listener you are, if you give this collection your honest attention and time, a great reward awaits.”

Definitely agreed with that sentiment: this is music that sweetens with repeat listens. Just spend some time with his full 2011 release, Book of Questions. It’s spine-tingling. Right now, I’m all about the track Escalator, a vocal pairing with singer Veronica Charnley. Amazing.

You can listen to the TREACLE WELL, his recent two-part album where this featured track sits, on Bandcamp. Only four tracks from each section of that album are available for listening, but it’s enough to see what you’ve been missing.

*Hat tip to We Listen for You for the great post/share.

What's so good?

Sydney five-piece Deep Sea Arcade have been one of my favorite bands over the past few years. Since 2008, they’ve been one of the most endearing local acts, their bygone era rock music translating wonderfully on a digital and live level. After releasing singles and EPs consistently over a few years, 2o12 saw the release of their debut album Outlands, which made it into my top 10 favorite acts of the year.

With a solid UK tour on the horizon, the band has just released their latest single from the record, “Granite City.” It’s typical Deep Sea Arcade, with swinging percussion paving the way for their well-known cutting guitar and psych-rock sounds. Lead singer and founding member Nic McKenzie’s vocals are a favorite of mine, and this track highlights them nicely.

Their energetic live show is definitely worthwhile checking out, so if you’re in the UK and love great rock bands, definitely give Deep Sea Arcade a look.

What's so good?

Although Minneapolis rock band Tapes N’ Tapes seem to be on a little of a hiatus, members Josh Grier and Jeremy Hanson are keeping things going with their side project Gingko. Today, the two offer their new track, “Ride It Out,” which will be appearing on their debut full-length album, Manopause.

The track doesn’t depart too far from Tapes N’ Tapes loud raucous sound that highlights their love for the Pixies. The vocals are coarse, the guitars are loud, and the drums hit hard.

So, if you were a fan of Tapes N’ Tapes’ rock aesthetics, you’ll totally dig Gingko.

What's so good?

I don’t know about you, but I don’t mind that in 2013, I’m still coming across bands making new music that takes me back to genres that were birthed decades ago.

Take a splash of Nirvana and a spoonful of Metallica and you’ve got The Black Clouds. Their sound is heavy and raw, bringing it back to the way rock and metal started out. The Black Clouds have got the quintessential grungy hard rock set up: electric guitars (both rhythm and lead) on full blast, booming drawn out bass, heavy drums, and, of course, the heart-wrenching, angst-inducing vocals that make you want to clench your fists. But there’s an obvious sensitive side within the hardness, as shown in their single, “Fray.”

Don’t forget to grab The Black Clouds’ CD, Better Days, and let the inner hard rock/metal head within you come out.

What's so good?

Loon Lake are a Melbourne-based garage rock band consisting of three brothers and their two mates. Their single “Cherry Lips” finished at #29 (smack bang between Bat for Lashes and Django Django) in the 2012 edition of Triple J’s Hottest 100, and they’ve gained a significant following locally, having sold out numerous shows around the country. Now they’re taking their music to the rest of the world, with two tracks now available for a free download in anticipation of their upcoming debut album release.

“On Fire” is a track full of drive and energy; their music has always had a certain bravado, and this one if full of it. From the howling vocals, the ripping guitar riffs, and the pounding percussion, this is a band dripping with classic rock influences. What’s surprising is the short, almost delicate, interlude towards the end, before they finish off the frantic track as it began. Sitting here listening to their SoundCloud, I’m immediately surprised at how many of their songs have been stuck in my head at one time or another – they’re just that catchy.

Keep an eye out later in the year for the album release, but in the meantime, visit their SoundCloud!

What's so good?

Mount Fabric are four piece band from Manchester, England, with Alex Marczak on vocals/guitar/keyboard/violin, Joel Godfrey on guitar/keyboard/backing vocals, Duncan Robjohns on bass, and Ryan Cowburn on drums/percussion. Alex Marczark sings in the falsetto voice much like Asa Taccone of Electric Guest; in other words, fans of Electric Guest will dig them.

“Heuristic Fits” starts off with chilling keyboard and drum work, then dark vocals add to color to the song. What's so good?

Beach Day first appeared on Indie Shuffle back in December with “Walking On The Streets,” and they are now preparing for the release of their debut album Trip Trap Attack, due June 18, 2013 via Kanine Records. I’ve been hoping they would release new music sometime this year and now they have!

“Boys” is their first single off Trip Trap Attack. It’s a fun, girl-powered garage/surf rock track with awesome guitar work, solid drumming, and reverb vocals. It also has an old school 60s sound, yet is still current to the indie rock scene.

If you’re into Beach Day, then be sure to grab a pre-order of TripTrap Attack.

What's so good?

I had the pleasure of seeing Matermathu play a show in Brooklyn a few weeks ago, and I was truly impressed and enthralled with their performance. They’ve definitely got the “it” factor, whether they’re going for that or not.

One of my favorite songs by them, “Brick City Blues,” is a down-home bluesy rock rendition with gritty guitars, raw and soulful vocals, and a classic rock beat that’s bound to get you waving your beer in the air and swaying your hips. This classic rock ballad has got all the fixins’ — slithering bass, edgy chords, and even a twangy guitar solo. It’s refreshing to see this retro style of music being kept alive and in a respectable and truly talented kind of way.

I’d keep an eye out for Matermathu if I were you. They’re currently working on their next album. In the meantime, you can treat yourself to their latest album Ain’t No Love In The Heart Of The City!

What's so good?

English band Cheatahs are currently opening for Wavves on tour, and that’s exactly how I stumbled upon them. Their four track EP, SANS, was released in late 2012, but I’m thinking they’re gonna pick up some traction in the U.S. very shortly. Like right now.

The sound is very shoegazey, which I like, but it’s not at the expense of the instrumentals. I think it’s this hard versus fuzzy dichotomy that really makes “The Swan” stand out (though the rest of the EP skews much more shoegaze). But, I can tell they don’t want me to be debating the intricacies of their sound, so just gonna chillllll outtttt… I mean rock out… I mean chill out…

Catch them live as they sweep down the East Coast!

What's so good?

If you thought that punk rock was dead, well, you thought wrong. Now on Saddle Creek records, The Thermals (a Portland trio) have been churning out guitar crunchy tracks for over a decade and they see no end to their music. On their single, “The Sunset,” they don’t turn back; they get those guitars crunching away right from the start.

Off their Saddle Creek debut Desperate Ground, the song is about, “Someone learning to deal with the harsh reality around them,” according to frontman Hutch Harris. And the truth is all well-documented in the track, as the singer belts out:

I am always alert, although my enemies are few
I know the ones you will hurt
Are the closest to you
I am always awake in the fear they are gone
But my shadows are fate
They’ve been here all along

Powerful and relatable to most, the song continues the bands tradition in fine writing. Their new album Desperate Ground will be available April 19, 2013 out on Saddle Creek Records.

What's so good?

I definitely like a good short song, especially when every second is filled with raw emotion. “Only Child” by Perth duo Dead Owls is by no means the shortest song I’ve come across, but for its length it’s certainly one of the most anthemic that I’ve heard in a while.

In just over 2 and a half minutes you can hardly take a breath. This track progresses from a solemn folk track in the beginning to an indie rock anthem that would fill a stadium with pure excitement and exuberance. It’s emotive rock at its very best and I’m glad it’s coming from my hometown.

Their debut EP Small Talk is out now, but make sure to get yourself a free copy of “Only Child” here.

What's so good?

Brisbane’s Tourism has become a bit of a regular on Indie Shuffle; two of their previous singles — “Horses Back” and “City Never Sleeps” — were both well received. 2013 will see the young band release their debut EP (around the middle of the year), which is sure to increase the buzz generated from their earlier work and constant touring schedule.

With half of the four-piece growing up in the UK, their new single once again tips its hat to the Brit-pop genre. “Float Away” is split into two parts — a playful jaunt highlighted by Jozef Wisniewski’s raucous vocals and an interesting use of horn samples, with epic, grungy guitar riffs appearing throughout the track.

With the EP now in sight, Tourism are set to again hit the road in support of its release. While you’re here, check out the video clip of the single below.

What's so good?

This South London trio have garage rock thing going for them. Black Manila last appeared on Indie Shuffle with “June ’95,” and they are currently writing thier debut album. While we wait for that, they released a new single!

“Shake That Thing” is a powerful rock song that features loud vocals and free flowing guitar riffs. If you’re enjoying jamming to this song, grab an order off Bandcamp. What's so good?

I first fell in love with California’s Rogue Wave back in 2007 with their third studio album, Asleep At Heaven’s Gate, and more specifically with their hit single “Lake Michigan.” They had a certain simplicity about them; nothing too flashy, but there was certainly something extremely heartfelt about their lyrics.

Seems like nothing hasn’t changed, as they’re back in 2013 with their latest single “College.” Like I said before, they’re just a really good honest rock band that create music to inspire the masses. It’s the rather simple yet sophisticated guitar progression that is the hero in this particular single — oh, and don’t forget Zach Rogue’s charming vocals.

“College” will feature on their fifth studio album Nightingale Floors. Enjoy!

Enjoy!

What's so good?

Wax Idols is a four piece band from Oakland, CA comprised of Heather Fortune (lead vocals/lead guitar), Jennifer Moody (rhythm guitar/backing vocals), Amy Rosenoff (bass) and Rachel Travers (drums). Heather Fortune recorded the band’s first album, No Future, by herself; but Wax Idols’s upcoming album, Discipline & Desire, was recorded with the full band.

Single “When It Happens” is post-punk track with dark undertones and chilling vocals. Discipline & Desire is due for release on March 26, 2013 via Slumberland Records. We’re hoping to hear more from them soon, but if you want to jump the gun, then grab a pre-order of the album here.

What's so good?

What initially tracks through my mind when I read a title like “Prospector’s Waltz” is the tale of a miner’s mambo through mountains of mystique, a la The Decemberists. However, this “waltz” from rockers Service Bells is anything but a delicate dance through sweet, freak-folk harmonies.

Instead, we’re treated to an ominous tale of flirtation between two potential partners that have “terrible eye[s]” which emit an aura keeping everyone “eight feet away.” Set over raucous drums, unforgiving guitar riffs and a bit of mellotron for tasteful measure, the lead singer imagines “getting what’s yours” (which I interpret at the very least as physical needs) as like prospecting over a field of land mines.

It’s a bit of a thumping good time, but we shouldn’t expect anything less from a band that is partially comprised of the bass player from my favorite new band out of Australia this year, Cull. Plus, any group able to cobble Tom Waits, Nick Cave, Bowie, Red Fang and Jesus Lizard as influences on the fly when I send an inquiry their way surely has creativity and a vision to spare.

Follow them on their SoundCloud and like them on Facebook to follow their releases as they come out.

What's so good?

Charlotte’s own Black Market really brings me back to my adolescent years, when I took my all of my pent-up anger and hormones on fast and loud punk rock ballads.

“Gaze” has made me all nostalgic for those angst-filled days. I hold a soft spot in my heart for this style of music, and nowadays, when I hear a band that’s keeping it alive, I have a deep appreciation for them. As you listen to this single, you’ll notice that it has all of the classic qualities of a pop-punk song, including ridiculously fast drums, gritty guitar riffs, bellowing bass, and shout-out-loud singalong vocals. What’s not to love? From the verses to the chorus to the breakdown, this song has got it all!

What’s even better is that Black Market has their music up on Bandcamp= for free, because, and I quote, “everything is free on the Black Market.” And that’s not all. You can follow their experiment of releasing an EP once a month for a year! These guys are unstoppable.

What's so good?

In my not-so-secret dream life, days are interspersed with seemingly spontaneous song-and-dance routines (yes, this and even this definitely had something to do with that. Uh, why didn’t that happen at MY prom?!).

Today’s dance break comes courtesy of New Politics, putting out some of the most fun good-time rock ‘n’ roll I’ve heard in a while. Their single, “Harlem,” is just begging you to get up and get down: “When it gets loud, I turn it up/Sh-sh-shake it like a bad girl up in Harlem!” A booming backbeat and enough raucous guitar works amp things up to full on party levels, never deviating its undeniably hooky sound.

Careful, too many listens will have you ready to start dancing on tables.

What's so good?

Philadelphia’s Thee, Idea Men are bringing the blues rock with their single, “She’s Got The Wand,” and it’s oh-so-gritty.

Sometimes all you want is a quintessential, all-American rock ballad to lose yourself in, and thankfully, Thee, Idea Men bring the goods. They waste no time getting into the nitty gritty of what blues rock is all about — raw guitars, bellowing bass, fast-paced beats and raspy, soulful vocals. This single has got everything that you could want in a classic stoner rock song.

If you want to hear more, check out Thee, Idea Men’s album Getcho Groo Von and prepare to lose yourself in some blues rock madness!
