What's so good?

You might be familiar with the song “Nightvision” as being part of Daft Punk’s amazing 2001 album Discovery. And if you are, you’re probably also aware that the song was only 1:44 long. Basically, that made it a filler.

Then along came Brazilian duo The Twelves (this was back in 2009), putting their own spin on the track. Mind you, it’s a borderline remix, but we’ll let them call it a cover given that they’ve extended the song to roughly five minutes.

Speaking of which, what the hell happened to The Twelves?

Kavinsky – ProtoVision

What's so good?

For those of you expecting to hear another “Nightcall,” don’t get your hopes up. This new single “ProtoVision” comes nowhere near being as good.

The track is off an upcoming movie called Outrun, for which Kavinsky is providing the soundtrack. In researching this a bit, I actually found myself surprised to learn that he has never really done a full LP. In fact, Wikipedia is calling the 2013 release of this soundtrack his first and only album thus far.

“Nightcall” was Kavinsky’s breakthrough — and clearly this track demonstrates (in my mind) that he is nowhere near the same playing field as Daft Punk. If he was, he’d be repeating the hits.

That said, I’ve heard worse…

What's so good?

Is this the first leaked song off Daft Punk’s impending new album? We’re not entirely sure. There’s little to corroborate, beyond the sound being awfully similar. That, and a number of people are saying it’s the real deal.

“Emphazed” is chock full of great arpeggios, harmonious electronic blips, and all the Daft Punk style we’d expect. Either it’s a really good fake, or this is the real thing.

We’re hoping that it’s the latter, but I’m very inclined to call this one “fake.”

What do you think? Is this the real deal?

Update: This is definitely fake.

What's so good?

It’s Saturday, which is probably a great time to start a smooth French electro-funk playlist. What better way to kick that off than with a new track from Breakbot?

The prolific French producer is gearing up for his debut album on Ed Banger Records, which is somewhat surprising given the sheer number of releases he’s had since ~2007.

Most of them have been remixes, so it’ll be interesting to continue digesting the material on By Your Side as it makes its way onto the internet. For now, we’ve got a good taste with “Another Dawn,” featuring Ifrane.

Boys Noize – XTC

What's so good?

Berlin-based DJ Boys Noize is gearing up to unleash a new album by name Out of The Black. In the past, he’s set himself apart from other electronic artists by exploring a variety of approaches and genres — and it appears that this release will be no exception.

This song, the first single to be released, definitely stands out from the masses. And while we’re talking about masses, may I posit that this would probably go down insanely well on a dance floor full of tripping EDM fans.

“XTC” definitely sets expectations for an album full of hard-hitting electronic tracks. We’ll keep you posted as more unfolds!

Digitalism’s remix of “Sail Away” starts off strongly enough that I’m going to overlook the unoriginal ending and share it with you anyway. Too bad I’ve just set your expectations…

Seriously though, their introduction on the 2011 song is really solid, and I wouldn’t miss it if you at all enjoy listening to either of these bands.

What's so good?

It’s really hard to mess up a track by French house legends Justice, so I expected nothing but #winning out of this A-Trak remix. Sure enough, it’s as good a listen as one could expect.

What's so good?

I’ve long been a fan of the Kitsuné-signed German duo Digitalism, and fortunately their new material continues to impress.

This morning, “Simply Dead” was unleashed to the masses. It’s the second single off their upcoming DJ Kicks mixtape, and the first one to cross my eardrums.

The track is somewhat dark – full of stuttering percussion and booming synth work. Reminds me a bit of SebastiAn’s crazy music.

This week’s Old School Wednesday is from Daft Punk, of about half of whom’s back-catalogue could be featured here. “Da Funk” is what Daft Punk do best, a slice of classic house in the funky, cool way that only the helmet-clad duo could ever produce.

Originally released in 1995, this track reached number eighteen in Pitchfork’s Top Tracks of the 90s. Thomas Bangalter revealed that “Da Funk” was made on the back of heavy listening to G-Funk, particularly Warren G’s “Regulate.” These influences run through the song making for one of house music’s funkier classics – as the name would imply.

What's so good?

A long time has passed since James Ford and Jas Shaw broke off from the band Simian to form Simian Mobile Disco. But, interestingly enough, the song “We Are Your Friends” didn’t take off until the year following the band’s split.

Credited to Justice, the song started as a remix of the track “Never Be Alone.” Even more interesting — when the song won best video award at MTV Europe in 2006, Kanye West hopped on stage to claim that he deserved the prize. If you’re curious to catch him being a poor sport, you can check out this YouTube clip.

What's so good?

We’ve posted tracks from French producer Breakbot before (“Fantasy” (Ft. Ruckazoid)”, a remix of Air’s “So Light is Her Footfall”), and today we’re featuring his newest track from upcoming album By Your Side, due out September 2012 (via Ed Banger Records).

The opening instrumentals are killer, there’s really no other way to describe it — it feels like you’re about to sit back and watch a classic 80s movie. Then the beat kicks in. If I wasn’t at work, I’d be blasting this track as loud as possible. It’s upbeat, but chill.

Keep your eyes peeled for more tracks from Breakbot’s upcoming album, and enjoy!

In case you missed it, The Shoes just released one of the craziest music videos for their song “Time To Dance.” In it, Jake Gyllenhaal murders a bunch of hipsters. Need I say more?

Care for a little French music to start your day? Hey Champ!’s remix of “Château” sees the heavier synth and darker vibes of th eoriginal replaced by sweet-sounding melodies and Chromeo-esque beats.

The song was just released to promote Housse De Racket’s upcoming tour of North America. Thought it doesn’t look like they’ll be swinging by my home base of San Francisco, I’ll definitely try catch them at Coachella. What's so good?

Would you believe me if I told you that this track was produced by Guy-Manuel of Daft Punk? What if I told you that SebastiAn was also involved? You probably wouldn’t be surprised, eh?

That’s because this track absolutely reeks of the French electro-house scene (as for the above, both facts are true).

Based out of Paris, Kavinsky’s “Nightcall” caught my attention for its eerie 80s feel. The opening howl instantly brings the image of a werewolf to mind, setting the tone for a haunting track that could have been composed by fellow patriots Air. Definitely been coming back to this one for the last few days.

What's so good?

Upon first hearing this song, I did not know what to think. I hadn’t quite experienced anything like it previously and was instantly mesmerized. I believe that I listened to it several times in a row just to take it all in. Over time it lost a bit of its luster, yet has since regained some of it back due to its diminished saturation level.

I am eager to hear what this young band will come up with next after the many issues they have encountered working on a follow up. Being told by a label that your work is too experimental and dense to release, before agreeing and then reworking things must be difficult. Regardless of what they come up with, I would like to hear that which the label said needed reworking. – Tympanogram
