What's so good?

Every time Melbourne-based I’lls release something new, I think to myself, “This is it for them right? They can’t improve on this one!” Then they go ahead and do just that.

The classically trained trio released their debut EP Thread back in 2011, and their second, A Warm Reception, is due out on June 17. The EP’s first single, “Plans Only Drawn,” was featured on Indie Shuffle back in March, and they’ve just released another absolutely delectable track.

“Speak Low” is an introspective masterpiece; the warmth this track gives off is unbelievable. Everything about it creates a fantastical dreamscape — from the deep bass riffs, to the withdrawn percussion and gentle keys, all the elements are balanced to perfection. Simon Lam’s vocals drift in and out throughout; you couldn’t have a different voice on this track.

To wrap this up, I write about music that I like, so there’s nothing new about me saying that this is a good band. But, I’lls aren’t just a good band — they’re a special one.

What's so good?

I get a bunch of music submissions sent to me on a daily basis, and I try to comb through them all to find some gems. Well, that definitely worked out for me today, because I came across this great band Shady Elders. They described their sound as dream pop and shoegaze, and they definitely deliver.

After listening to their single “In the Waves,” I was very impressed with the scope of their sound. It’s dense and has a lot of harmonies, which makes for a smooth, luscious listen.

Check out more from Shady Elders on SoundCloud and BandCamp

What's so good?

I’m not exactly sure how to classify King Krule’s “The Noose of Jah City,” and I don’t care to. The British artist used to go by the name Zoo Kid before taking on a Donkey Kong-inspired alias. The 19-year-old (!) Brit has a cartoonishly thin frame that belies his deep baritone and introspective subject matter. That’s pretty much all I know of him, factually.

Musically, I know the kid is on some other shit. His self-titled EP from 2011 houses this monster track we’re streaming today. Somber and moody, the song pairs a faint guitar and a backbeat with Krule’s booming vocals. The song feels like Sade’s slow bullet; it builds gradually, but before you realize it, it’s hooked you in. It’s obviously got indie aesthetics, but I hear a veritable hip-hop influence — not only in the rhythm, but the way the sampled chord changes come in. I’m nearly illiterate in terms of formal music composition and knowledge, so I could be flat-out wrong, but something tells me I’m not.

It doesn’t particularly take talent to get a buzz. A well-connected and well-implemented plan and the right aesthetics can do the trick, but it is very encouraging to see someone so young produce something of such force and gain recognition. I’m obviously late to the party, but I’m definitely keeping my eye on this guy.

What's so good?

Pure X is an emerging band from Austin, Texas that has a new album coming out very soon entitled Crawling Up The Stairs. This new record has them honing their songwriting skills instead of opting for the more experimental approach that they showcased on their previous album Pleasure.

Crawling Up The Stairs sounds like the band has found an inner calm in regards to their songwriting. Single “Thousand Year Old Child” unfolds slowly, gradually adding a bit of buzz to the wash of guitar and muted drum hits. As the song comes to an end, Pure X dazzles us with some huge swells of vocals and reverb-heavy guitars.

If you’re into a mellow mix of eclectic, psychedelic songwriting, then this album is for you.

What's so good?

I first discovered Selebrities two years ago when I was compiling a Halloween playlist (obviously), and their vintage rendition of “Monster Mash” landed in my inbox and had me laughing instantly. Since then, they’ve surfaced on a Kitsuné Maison compilation, put out an EP, and released their first full album, Delusions. In other words, they’ve been gaining some much deserved traction.

“Temporary Touch” is the first track off of their sophomore release Lovely Things, out June 25 through Cascine. The song maintains their hybridized love of vigorous 80s synth with a much chiller, shoegazey filter. However, this track delivers a much tighter, more polished take on what risks becoming a formulaic sound. We’ve seen such a resurgence of this type of “vintage pop,” it’s likely many artists will be forgotten as the sound continues to saturate. What they really excel at, however, is meditating between all these competing influences, each which risks overtaking the song and allowing the listener to type it.

So, take this month to delve into their discography, and get ready for Lovely Things’ release next month to shift your take on their signature sound!

What's so good?

Twin Cabins is known for his dream pop/shoegaze music, but he has now thrown his hand into the remix game. Tea Leigh released her song “Color Theory” about eight months ago, and now she’s releasing a few remixes of it, including Twin Cabins’ version.

This remix of “Color Theory” bounces vocals into reverb sound while slowing down the keyboard base of the song.

If you want more music from Tea Leigh, follow her on SoundCloud. Also, keep your eyes and ears open, because Twin Cabins may release a new album later this year.

What's so good?

The lights were dim, but the palm tree-tinged beats were loud and clear. L.A. enveloped S.F. as Goldroom brought the house down last week with their live set at the Rickshaw Stop.

Transitioning from a one-man outfit to a three-piece band, Josh Legg, aka Goldroom, has certainly made a smart move. Making the jump from producer/DJ to a live group that still pays homage to the roots and fanbase from whence they came is no small feat. But Legg knows his stuff, and clearly knows talent when he hears it.

Goldroom, now composed of frontwoman Mereki Beach and drummer Nick Sandler in addition to Legg, made the crowd rock and swoon with a varied, wonderfully executed set including original tracks, remixes, and even a cover of everyone’s favorite emo musician Elliot Smith. “Fifteen,” a spectacular rendition of Nikki and the Dove’s “Mother Protect,” and “Only You Can Show Me” were only a few of the favorites performed throughout the hour plus set.

Seeing Goldroom as the well-oiled group they are today, it’s hard to imagine I ever saw Legg open for The Magician as a solo act. Mereki fluttered about the stage with a dichotomous persona – part military, part cheerleader, but all platinum blonde – even leaping fully into the crowd at a point. As delicate as her stature is, the command and confidence she brought to the stage was venerable.

The thing most impressive was the easy transition the crowd had from Goldroom the DJ to Goldroom the group. It’s not an easy task to replicate synths and manufactured beats with live instruments for a crowd that is expecting a DJ set or *possibly* live production; Goldroom the group, however, slipped in and wowed.

The crowd, well, we fucking danced.

What's so good?

I first was introduced to Dark Bells with “Want,” their first single as a group. The London-based trio is now ready to take 2013 by storm; they’re set to release another single, “Wildflower,” on May 6, 2013 via Tape Club Records.

“Wildflower” isa six minute psychedelic trip. It’s got fluid guitar work, dark drumming, and shoegaze vocals all mixed in — a winning combination, if you ask us.

Dark Bells will be working their debut album while they hit road in the UK. Like them Facebook for tour dates and updates on their music.

What's so good?

Chicago’s Secret Colours are back with their latest post-rock single, “Blackhole.”

Prepare to get taken away into a 60s psych rock symphony, complete with dark lyrics and melancholy chords. It’s important to note the 90s grunge that gives this song an impressive edge. A looped drum beat, creepy bass, and reverberated vocals start the song off. Then comes the eerie effects that have the ability to send chills up your spine. I imagine this is the kind of song that would be suitable for a dark horror movie.

May 28, 2013 is the date to remember for Secret Colours’ upcoming album, Peach.

What's so good?

So fellow Shuffler Hugh and I were pretty excited about the release of Wintercoats’ (aka Melbourne’s James Wallace) latest EP Heartful, and turns out we had every right to be. It’s truly astonishing to know that as a solo artist, James Wallace had the capacity to play each and every instrument on the entire EP, which is definitely no easy feat.

“Heirloom,” the standout track on the EP, is so wonderfully engaging — it instantly manages to transport you to another world. Hushed choruses and a deeply layered crescendo of violins are an absolute match made in heaven in this dreamy production. It’s just so easy to get swept away in this gorgeous and stunning orchestral pop piece.

The EP is now available as a pay as you please download through Yes Please, so hurry over and grab your copy now!

What's so good?

After releasing an amazing album last year, Wild Nothing has announced a 7-song EP entitled Empty Estate to be released May 14, 2013.

This first single, “A Dancing Shell,” has Wild Nothing carving out an even more unique sound. They seem to be expanding their musical horizons, but that same nostalgia and beauty is still all over this track.

What's so good?

No Joy, the Canadian shoegaze band comprised of two female musicians — Jasmine White Glutz and Laura Lloyd — have a brand new album coming out soon entitled Wait To Pleasure. They released a short EP last year that was real promising for the band’s future, and now we have a new album on its way! The first few tracks sound great.

“Hare Tarot Lies” has their signature sound, a wash of beautiful vocals and noisy guitars that fall into the shoegaze genre. The sound they create is pretty amazing considering it’s only two people; this track has weight to the songwriting and the melodies are very memorable. I can’t wait to check out the rest of the album!

What's so good?

Hot off of their second EP Bloodworks, UK-based Phoria present us with “Scopes,” a fusion of melismatic vocals and steady percussive progression. The harmonic guitar plucking leads to something of a climactic nature, while the “elegant arrangements and ethereal vocals produce beautiful and eclectic music,” according to the band.

Following their initial teasing release of “Red” (which has copped almost 90,000 listens thus far on SoundCloud), Phoria’s Bloodworks EP manipulates vast sonic space by utilizing a multi-layered and euphoric approach. “Scopes” channels Phoria’s more alternative side as the tempo is increased and accentuated, along with the presence of a plethora of emotional additives that pull on our heart strings.

The entire Bloodworks EP can be streamed on Phoria’s SoundCloud page or purchased on iTunes.

What's so good?

Recently, I’ve noticed a number of bands classifying their sound as vintage pop. If you’re wondering what type of music this genre is, take a listen to Newcastle (Australia) five-piece Goldsmith. After a number of their previous singles found their way onto local radio, they’ve just released their latest track, the dreamy “Backbone.”

Recording their music in a homemade basement studio, they have called upon a vast array of influences (from funk to Polish folk apparently!) to create a truly lush sound. Everything’s done well on this track – from the airy vocals, to the flowing guitar, to the smooth percussion – all the elements group together perfectly.

Goldsmith’s talent is obvious; they’re a great indication of the abundance of quality bands who call Australia home. Hopefully their home-studio sees plenty more use in the near future.

What's so good?

English band Cheatahs are currently opening for Wavves on tour, and that’s exactly how I stumbled upon them. Their four track EP, SANS, was released in late 2012, but I’m thinking they’re gonna pick up some traction in the U.S. very shortly. Like right now.

The sound is very shoegazey, which I like, but it’s not at the expense of the instrumentals. I think it’s this hard versus fuzzy dichotomy that really makes “The Swan” stand out (though the rest of the EP skews much more shoegaze). But, I can tell they don’t want me to be debating the intricacies of their sound, so just gonna chillllll outtttt… I mean rock out… I mean chill out…

Catch them live as they sweep down the East Coast!

What's so good?

The Death Of Pop was a bit of a mystery to me when I first heard their song “Girl I Can’t Forget,” but I know a bit more about them now. Band members Oliver James (guitars, vocals), Angus James (guitars, vocals), Thom James (drums), and James Isaacs (bass) are not related, but each member happens to have the name James as a middle name or first name. Weird, right?

The Death Of Pop have released ten songs to their SoundCloud in last three months. “Let Me Drown” is their latest, and it’s an indie pop song with bouncy guitar play and well-paced drumming; they also got a bit of shoegaze vocals happening in there.

The Minnesota indie label Manic Pop! Records will be releasing The Death Of Pop’s first physical release, 7″ Hang EP, due soon. If this song has captured your attention, feel free to order it here.

What's so good?

Prepare to step into a psychedelic secret garden when you listen to Secret Colours‘ ”Blackbird (Only One).” All I keep thinking about while listening to this track is some tripped out scenery with mirages of unusual horticulture and rainbow-colored sky.

So basically, this song is great if you’re into mind-altering substances. It’s droney with a touch of kraut. Secret Colours easily melds a couple genres together: the psychedelic 60s and the grunge-filled 90s. Together you get a melancholy wonderland of retro fuzzed-out guitar adorned with spacey pedal effects and lulling, hypnotizing vocals.

May 28, 2013 is the date to remember. That’s when Secret Colours will be releasing their upcoming album, Peach.

What's so good?

I’m pleased to hear that Knesset is back with a fresh new single, “RVRSE.” It’s breezy, atmospheric and a nice accompaniment for this spring season.

Slightly psychedelic yet still carefully constructed, “RVRSE” combines the simple and the complex to make an intelligent approach to an indie rock genre that leaves so much room for creativity. The synthetic loops and twinkling dabs of synth softens what would otherwise be a song that’s a bit on the harder side. The drums provide a steady, resonating beat which lends a more energetic vibe to the aforementioned ethereal effects. The vocals are incredibly catchy and bound to get stuck in your head (especially the melancholy chorus).

Knesset’s release of “RVRSE” is leading up to their new EP, Sage. I can’t wait to hear what style their experimenting with this time around.

What's so good?

As far as Australian folk-pop goes, David John Williams’ project DANVERS is up there with the finest. A member of the ridiculously talented Adelaide band Fire! Santa Rosa, Fire!, he’s just released his latest single “Paper Skin.”

Unlike many side projects where artists don’t stray too far from their band’s regular sound, Williams takes on a completely different guise on his solo work (similar to Manor, another offshoot of F!SRF!). Operating as a mix of folk, jazz and blues, he creates introspective music which showcases his dreamy vocals, changeable guitar and more importantly, his expert arrangement.

Described as a “slow-burning herald of things to come” I’m expecting new material from this brilliant musician soon. Check out his SoundCloud for previous releases.

What's so good?

The Oakland-based indie pop band, Magic Fight, which consists of Alex Haager, Alex Pinto, Hernando Buitrago and Jeff Gist, began their musical journey during the summer of 2012. For a young band, Magic Fight has gained endorsements by notable musical platforms in the Bay Area. Their previous single, “Fangs,” was featured on SF Deli, The Bay Guardian, The Bay Bridged, and Bagel Radio.

I am thrilled to premiere their single “LEGS” off of their seven-track debut album WOODEN SWORDS AND STOLEN ECHOES. Magic Fight’s album release show is on April 16, 2013 at El Rio in San Francisco with There’s Talk and Mosaics. On May 30, 2013, they will be playing at Amnesia in SF with Kids on a Crime Spree and Teenage Sweater — not bad for the freshman quartet.

Magic Fight was once a foreign sound to my ears, but their elvish melody threaded with the chant-like repetition of the sole word “LEGS” will leave you frolicsome and satisfied, wanting to lose your virginity to the rest of their musical inventory.

What's so good?

Is this song stunning, or what? Phoria’s “Red” “combines beguiling melodies, elegant arrangements and ethereal vocals” (according to the song description) to produce something reminiscent of Sigur Ros or James Blake. Based out of Brighton, Britain, Phoria is gearing up for the April 29, 2013 release of their newest body of work: an EP titled Bloodworks.

Following the 2010 album release of Yourself Still, Phoria has kept busy not only writing music, but also sharing the stage with the likes of Little Dragon, Ultraista, Active Child and Dodgy.

“Red” accentuates the power that minimalist electronica embodies, captivating all listeners with its emotion-heavy vocals and modest use of clap percussion. In short, we can’t get enough.

What's so good?

This Texan “doom-wop” outfit has made a name for themselves after releasing their self-titled EP. Cool Serbia is rock and roll for the modern age — the perfect blend of Surfer Blood’s modern teen angst and the pop sensibilities of surf rock originators The Shadows. In the ever-saturated world of dreamwave bands, they’ve found a home for their original sounds, balancing between noise punk and proper pop ballads.

This tune, “Kill Someone,” has simple but melodic guitar riffs that perfectly complement the classic vocals of Raz Khandpur filtered through cutting-edge sound effects. Check it out and be on the look out for their tour, as the band just moved from Austin to Brooklyn to take their career to the next level.

What's so good?

Late last year, we brought you “Halogen Moon,” a gorgeous single from Melbourne’s Wintercoats (James Wallce). Off his upcoming EP Heartfelt (out on April 17) we’ve just been treated to a second slice of perfection from this truly brilliant artist.

Just released, the EP’s second single is “Everyone Seems to Be in on Something.” Wallace’s main strengths are his haunting vocals and the use of his trusty violin, and these are both on display on this track. The one-man music box plays all the instruments (including a glockenspiel on this song) just to make us feel even more inadequate.

Having supported a multitude of stars recently (including Beach House, Sarah Blasko and How to Dress Well), people are starting to really pay attention to this young man’s brilliance. Roll on April 17.

What's so good?

Spring is the best. Winter gets called out for being an archaic bastard and April rains right him out of our lives. Oh, yeah, and all the hipster musicians we love take off their Holden Caulfield-esque hat that muffled their music in cynicism and release truly life-awing tracks.

Case in point: Young Galaxy‘s new track “New Summer,” which teases at the prospect of new life before throwing all pretense aside in favor of some unabashed, fawning decadence. Soaring strings copulate with Catherine McCandless’ vocals to produce a chorus that will be the summer soundtrack baby of many a drive down Pacific Coast Highway with the top down.

And that chorus features one of my favorite synth sections yet this year. Its flirtatious bantering gives way to a simultaneous need for reflection and a desire skinny-dip and “howl at the moon.” Enjoy!

What's so good?

It’s late on a Tuesday, and I should be sleeping. But here I am, drawn to the keyboard yet again to share a brilliant track from a UK group simply called Wall.

“Left To Wonder” is an exquisitely crafted melodic caress, just the kind of musical embrace one needs after a long day. Seemingly purged of all of the fast-paced activities we have in this day and age, the electronic shoegaze tune is hypnotically placid with its delicate lyrics and smooth composition.

For more from Wall, click here and listen a little. Or a lot, if you’re anything like this writer.
