I don’t mean to be dramatic here, but if anything or anyone wakes me up before 10am, I am likely to set them on fire. I think I have found the cure for weekday mornings, however, and it’s this song.

Jeremy Neale, frontman and visionary of 12-piece band/cult Velociraptor, has recently embarked on his solo tour around Australia and is soon to be jetting off to the UK. “In Stranger Times” is the second release from his upcoming debut EP, and features the very talented ladies from Go Violets. This track is all sunshine and dreamy pop, with old-school harmonies and “woah-ohs” to make you feel like you’re cruising through the suburbs in your dad’s convertible, dripping ice cream onto the leather seats, and generally being as far away from peak-hour traffic on a cold morning as is possible.

“Boys” is their first single off Trip Trap Attack. It’s a fun, girl-powered garage/surf rock track with awesome guitar work, solid drumming, and reverb vocals. It also has an old school 60s sound, yet is still current to the indie rock scene.

It’s less than two weeks until Owl Eyes will release her debut album Nightswim, and so as a little treat, Brooke has decided that we should all get a copy of the title track “Nightswim” for free! You know what? I sort of feel like going for a swim right about now even though it’s pitch black and I have no pool in my backyard — I am willing to fill a hole with water.

This particular single is much more downtempo, with dashes of melancholy throughout the verses — yet the chorus is largely quite joyous. This is a synth-driven track, which I suppose will be a recurring theme throughout the entire album. But hey, I’m definitely not complaining, especially since no one sounds more heartfelt over a bed of nostalgic synths than Brooke.

Nightswim is out April 19, 2013, but in the meantime grab your free copy of the title single here.

Australia has produced a fair chunk of surf-pop music over the past few years, and one of the most underrated groups going around is Sydney slackers Driffs. We featured their first single “Someday” late last year, which saw them score a number of support slots for the likes of Bleeding Knees Club and Gung Ho.

Recently returning from some globetrotting, the four-piece have just debuted their new track, “Mary.” With guitarist Arthur Dazos taking the lead vocals on this one, they’ve generated more of a surf-punk vibe than their other slightly smoother tracks. From the sound of it, this will be a style the band continues this year, having recently set up a home studio in preparation of further releases.

Simply put, Driffs make surf-pop easy to love; I wholeheartedly endorse these dudes.

Ahhh, just what I need to wind down from a hectic day: the perfect chilled-out track from Brooklyn’s Chalk and Numbers titled ”Pretty Colors.”

This light-hearted song is delicately constructed and truly a pleasant listen if you’re looking to tone things down and relax. The electric guitar is intricate and twinkling, the drums keep a modest beat, the piano lightly prances around, and the vocals are so adorable. It reminds me a little bit of a bubblegum pop group from the 60s. There’s a wistful and dreamy aspect to this song that makes for a lovely listen.

Keep your eyes peeled and your ears open for Chalk and Numbers’ Parade EP set to release on March 12, 2013. Their style is perfect for the upcoming spring season!

In a day and age where so much of our attention is focused on the latest, cutting-edge music, it was nice that My Bloody Valentine’s new record got so much attention (even if it was kinda disappointing). And in that same vein, it’s fantastic to see a young band like The Bilinda Butchers embody the wonderfully fuzzy shoegaze sound that so many of us grew to love over the last few decades.

Based out of San Francisco, duo Michal and Adam list their influences as The Radio Dept, Air, Rocketship, and of course My Bloody Valentine, who’s lead singer Bilinda Butcher provides their namesake. They’re releasing “The Lovers’ Suicide” as the first single off their upcoming album (yet titled), which you can pre-order on CD or vinyl.

There’s still a solid hint of youth in the track — likely owing to the fact that this duo appear to be in their early-20s at the oldest. Overall, definitely looking forward to what the full album will have in store.

While taking a trip to North Lake Tahoe this last weekend, there was a song that kept playing over and over on Sirius XMU station. Low and behold, it was a fresh new (sort of) track by Cayucas called “High School Lover.”  I say “sort of” because the track was previously performed by their formerly known band named Oregon Bike Trails. More importantly, and not to take away from what they have got going for them now, the song is gold.  It soon became our anthem for the weekend — we listened to it maybe a dozen times over two days.

Cayucas are a California-based group that has a cool beach pop sound; think modern day Beach Boys meets Beck.  The track “High School Lover” has a effervescent and contagious feel to it, which is probably why I didn’t mind listening to it over and over. While spending my college years in San Luis Obispo, a town neighboring Cayucos, it’s clear that the band and their sound has a happy marriage of the slow surf-like life that surrounds the coastal area.

“High School Lover” comes from their debut album Bigfoot, which will be released April 1, 2013 via Secretly Canadian.

This duo from Leeds, UK have an incredible knack for poppy hooks that are arranged inside a bubble of fuzz and seemingly amateur-ish musicianship. This gives it a little more character, rather than taking away from the song.

“The Ghost of the Yellow Dog” is a combination of psych-pop and lo-fi indie rock. They purposefully embellish their lack of true chops to make some music that immediately connects with the listener. Word is that they haven’t been signed yet by any label, and are really on the brink of breaking out into the music consciousness of a lot of listeners.

This duo from Leeds, UK have an incredible knack for poppy hooks that are arranged inside a bubble of fuzz and seemingly amateur-ish musicianship. This gives it a little more character, rather than taking away from the song.

“The Ghost of the Yellow Dog” is a combination of psych-pop and lo-fi indie rock. They purposefully embellish their lack of true chops to make some music that immediately connects with the listener. Word is that they haven’t been signed yet by any label, and are really on the brink of breaking out into the music consciousness of a lot of listeners.

Released initially as a private track to their Soundcloud fans a month early (in case of a Mayan Apocalypse success), Work Drugs‘ new track has now officially spread across the internet for all ears to enjoy.

Everyone knows (//holds up Hipster Cred Certificate//) that I’ve been a big fan of the surf-rockers since they came into the scene way back in 2010.  They are one of the most prolific bands out there (releasing a free download each month to their fans) and their tracks are always killer.

“Young Lungs” is certainly the clearest manifestation of the band’s progress in two years from lo-fi electro to dance rockers. While the band’s tracks usually exude a restrained energy, “Young Lungs” is bursting with an uncharacteristically high energy. Coupled with lyrics like, “You don’t know where I’ve been/You don’t know what I’ll be/Just to not be an asterisk in the storyboard”, their new track enters full blown anthem mode while keeping the surfer romance that serves them so well.

Oh, and did I mention there is a killer sax solo in the song? I love me some good sax any day.

Clearly artists work on their material for quite some time. But I just can’t help but feel that we’re currently experiencing the ramifications of the complete dearth of good new music going into Thanksgiving. Basically, everyone had a chance to finalize all of their recordings while trying to get a break from their family, and this week they’re releasing them.

Another way of putting it: when it rains, it pours. All the more reason to have a swimsuit, and fortunately Cayucas has us covered there.

Formerly known as Oregon Bike Trails, Cayucas is now signed to Secretly Canadian. I’m not sure if that makes him Canadian, because his location is listed as Santa Monica. The latter makes sense, given that Cayucas is a beach town off the coast of CA.

“Swimsuit” is part of a two song release, alongside a song we’ve covered twice in the past, “Cayucos.” In a nutshell, it’s surf-rock. Cooooool.

Clearly artists work on their material for quite some time. While there are a number of Australian bands releasing slacker, surf pop music at the moment, Sydney’s Driffs are quite possibly my favorite. After completing their first material earlier this year, they recently released their first official single “Someday.”

Seeing them for the first time the other night in the packed REC studios (where they recorded their single), I was immediately drawn in by their blend of psych, pop and surf genres. If you closed your eyes, it might as well have been the extended instrumental sections of Real Estate, or the breathy vocals of Beach Fossils. Theirs is the sort of music you’ll listen to over and over again.

I can’t begin to explain to you how difficult it was to find any information on this band. However, what I did find out from Google is that Cayucos is a nice little beach town in California. Well, I can certainly say Cayucas sure make the right sort of music for any beach town.

We’re not sure what the relationship of the band is to the town, but this song is definitely very, “Let’s take a romantic road trip up to Cayucos so we can frolic around on the beach!” Everything about “Cayucos” is fun, from the way that the lead singer verbalizes Cayucos to that casual guitar strum and punctuating percussion.

If you’re hitting up the beach anytime soon, “Cayucos” is a must have on your playlist.

This artist may very well be a casualty of a chameleon industry, but it doesn’t stop “Peanut Butter” from being one of my favorite remixes of 2012.

Alison is a ingénue of a pop star from New York. Late summer, she was slamming the blogosphere with a track called “Peanut Butter.” The orignal, admittedly, bugs the crap out of me, so it was a stroke of fate that I heard the Moon Boots remix first, and man, is it the feel-good of feel-good tracks for a beautiful sunny day.

Alison’s full release, Swimming Pool Sounds, was slated for release later in the summer. Summer has now come and gone, and Alison has come and gone off HeavyRoc’s artist roster.

Don’t get too disappointed, she’s left us with a great memory… and who knows, sometimes life gets in the way and albums are postponed. Quite possibly, Alison Valentine might be someone to watch in 2013.

Lace Curtains is Michael Coomer’s newest side project. Coomers is normally a part of the jangly pop-band Harlem, who are known for their hook-laden, carefree attitude. It has that same type of appeal, but is a little more earnest and soft. It’s a little tongue-in-cheek with sentimentality as well, but some of these songs benefit from this and are just plain catchy.

This tune, “Bedroom Honesty,” shines with its garage pop sound, especially as Coomers sings out, “I’m trying to sleep / Why don’t you / Leave me alone … Just a version of bedroom honesty / I’ve heard it before.” Boom. 

Coomers hits hard when it comes to emotion. Check out the rest of this album for some more of his hits.

The song comes as the second single off their impending sophomore release The Late Blue, due for release October 19th in Australia. What’s a touch weird here is that the album isn’t expected to hit the USA until 2013…which strikes me as slightly bizarre given the speed at which the internet moves. Surely if you release it in Australia, anyone who wants to get their hands on it stateside will do so?

I suppose that doesn’t really matter. I’ll leave you with some words regarding their shift in sound, from the band’s Lionel Towers:

It’s probably a bit more ‘summery’. There’s a little bit of world [music] influence in it. It’s definitely different to the first album in many ways – there’s lots more major chords. With Gilgamesh there were more minor chords. We’re just doing what we want to do, like we always have. On the next album we might do something even different, but I think [on this album] we needed to do something a little more ‘left’ than the first album.

Oh gosh, I don’t normally do this, but “Float” is kind of a repost. Why only kind of? Well, it’s a re-recording of the original, and has been released by a completely new band, Pacific Air.

Only thing to point out is that that band has all the same members. Just a different name.

Still, quite some time has passed since KO KO released the first version of this track, and I figured I’d be doing a disservice not to expose more of you to the awesomeness of this track. That is, if you haven’t already encountered it via Sound Remedy or Polaris At Noon‘s remixes.

For a country with a population of less than 25 million, the Australian music scene certainly is booming with talent. I hadn’t heard of Melbourne-based quartet Twerps until a few days ago, but they’ve instantly won me over with their lo-fi, surf pop style.

The band are gearing up for a headline tour, for which “He’s In Stock” will be released a 7″. It’s an infectiously upbeat number, easily relatable and sure to be a success played live.

GRMLN is 19-year-old Tokyo born, SoCal raised Yoodoo Park. It all began in 2012 when Yoodoo started recording his creations in his garage. Fast forward to today and GRMLN is gearing up to release a debut EP, Explore, on October 23… all while still in college!

GRMLN’s first single, “Coral,” is pretty self-explanatory. You can easily pick up on the SoCal influence and the chilled out atmosphere that this track projects. The jangly guitars, smooth pop bass, and shuffling beat all lay out the perfect basis for the breezy vocals that accompany the instrumentals. This is the type of song you put on when you just want to forget about everything.
