Primavera Sound 2013: Thursday Preview

Perks of running a music blog full-time? Following the music, of course! And in this case, I’m fortunate enough to be able to make my way over to Barcelona for the Primavera Sound music festival, which takes place later this week (tickets still available here).

Things officially kick off today, but given there are only ~15 bands playing, I figured I’d skip to Thursday. It seems to have a mostly indie-rock slant, and I can’t even count how many bands are playing. Here are the acts I’ll be making sure not to miss:

Poolside: 6.30pm on the Ray-Ban stage. Daytime disco dance party anyone? Please!

Tame Impala: 8.30pm on the Heineken stage. Ready to drift away in a psych-rock haze, and then probably get dinner.

Jessie Ware: 9.55pm on the Pitchfork stage. But there’s some competition — Dinosaur Jr. and Do Make Say Think. Will probably catch some of the latter, who start 20 minutes before Jessie on the ATP stage.

The Postal Service: 10.55pm on the Heineken stage. Absolutely can’t miss this High School flashback.

Grizzly Bear: 12:15am on the Primavera stage.

Phoenix: 1.40am on the Heineken stage. Alright, this is starting to get late. 7 hours in now? Must. Keep. Going.

Four Tet: 2.25am on the Pitchfork stage. Am I getting too old for this?

Animal Collective: 3.10am on the Heineken stage. The last time I saw them it was amazing. Might have to try again.

John Talabot: Okay, this is pushing it. 4.15am? I might have to call it a night…

What's so good?

I’ve covered Cull before — you know, those Australian rockers that sounded like if Tame Impala was finally able to chill and bliss the fuck out? (see: “I Thought We Was“ and “Good People Disappear.”) But this time they’ve really outdone themselves. This ain’t no ordinary dual single release, “Canker/If It Works” feels like the start of something much bigger than the band.

When I think of Australian rock, I see a genre looking way out and jumping across two ponds to a Eurocentric understanding of itself. But Australia isn’t Europe, and the more its music tries to emulate that scene, the more it will always be viewed as some kind of anomaly. I’ve always wondered what would happen if their music scene — much like what they are doing with their political identity — embraced their Asianness.

And that’s what “If It Works” does so damn well. Incorporating diversity of instrumentation like traditional oriental synths, mixed with vocal stylings that a band like From The Airport might take to the Seoul scene, “If It Works” looks out at the Indian Ocean with the same fierce determination that the cover art drawing has.

With “Canker/If It Works,” Cull shows they are ready to rumble as an inventive force of regional rock: eye markings, sweaty practices, and mind blowing tunes included.

What's so good?

For those who aren’t familiar with Australian radio station Triple J’s segment “Like A Version,” each week a band is asked to perform a song of their choosing live on air. Previously, we’ve seen things like Grizzly Bear covering Hot Chip, Ben Folds doing the Postal Service, and just last year, Bon Iver performed Anaïs Mitchell’s “Coming Down” (which Hannah featured here).

Sometimes bands butcher versions of songs to the point of blasphemy, but today’s edition is actually excellent. Triple J hosted Tame Impala (on an Australian national tour currently), and they put together a beautiful cover of Outkast’s “Prototype,” from the duo’s Grammy-winning 2003 album Speakerboxxx / The Love Below.

A great cover, in my opinion, doesn’t stray too far from the original, but has definite features of the performing band. I’m sure you’ll agree this one was carried out to perfection. From the funky bassline, the Kevin Parker/Nick Allbrook vocal combination, and the throbbing guitar riffs, Tame Impala get my thumbs up.

This just got me remembering how excellent this Outkast album truly was. Big Boi, Andre 3000… where are you? It’s been too long.

What's so good?

Any Tame Impala fans out there? That was the first band I thought of when listening to “Everyone Needs Someone” by Ohio-based Slow No Wake. It’s hard for me to understate how much I am digging the psychedelic vibes on this track, even though Slow No Wake is a one-person act and has technically classified “Everyone Needs Someone” as a demo.

Demo or not, I had to share this track. It resonates with me in the same way certain Youth Lagoon and Porcelain Raft songs do. There’s a spaciousness to “Everyone Needs Someone” that allows me to take my shoes off and get lost in it. I can feel that slide guitar in my bones, and want to be best friends with all that reverb.

What's so good?

Chicago’s Secret Colours are back with their latest post-rock single, “Blackhole.”

Prepare to get taken away into a 60s psych rock symphony, complete with dark lyrics and melancholy chords. It’s important to note the 90s grunge that gives this song an impressive edge. A looped drum beat, creepy bass, and reverberated vocals start the song off. Then comes the eerie effects that have the ability to send chills up your spine. I imagine this is the kind of song that would be suitable for a dark horror movie.

May 28, 2013 is the date to remember for Secret Colours’ upcoming album, Peach.

What's so good?

Late last year, we bought you a great track from Sydney band The Money Go Round. The band’s debut single “YAYAYA” drew plenty of positive reviews, with their sound being likened to acts as high-standing as the Black Keys and Kasabian.

While their first release did contain plenty of psych elements, their latest single, “Endless Sun,” dives much further into the genre, with outstanding results. Dreamy and deep, it’s almost a homage to some of the later (drug-fueled) psych music that the Beatles produced; I’m sure I can hear Ravi Shankar’s sitar somewhere there.

I liked their first single, but I love their second. As you can imagine, I’m rather keen to hear what’s next for the Money Go Round.

What's so good?

Sydney five-piece Deep Sea Arcade have been one of my favorite bands over the past few years. Since 2008, they’ve been one of the most endearing local acts, their bygone era rock music translating wonderfully on a digital and live level. After releasing singles and EPs consistently over a few years, 2o12 saw the release of their debut album Outlands, which made it into my top 10 favorite acts of the year.

With a solid UK tour on the horizon, the band has just released their latest single from the record, “Granite City.” It’s typical Deep Sea Arcade, with swinging percussion paving the way for their well-known cutting guitar and psych-rock sounds. Lead singer and founding member Nic McKenzie’s vocals are a favorite of mine, and this track highlights them nicely.

Their energetic live show is definitely worthwhile checking out, so if you’re in the UK and love great rock bands, definitely give Deep Sea Arcade a look.

It seems that Lonerism, the latest LP from Tame Impala, is never going to come off rotation at my house. The band was the only act I watched at Coachella, and that performance made me fall in love with them again. Even that incredibly long, head bobbing nine-minute guitar instrumental didn’t kill the magic for me. But ultimately, it’s the remixes that keep Lonerism at the forefront of my mind.

Chrome Canyon’s take on “It Feels Like We Only Go Backwards“ is my anthem for miserable Mondays, and Ducktails’ scintillating remix of “Mind Mischief“ easily confirmed that Ducktails is one of the great underrated acts out there. Now you can add Xinobi‘s bass-y rework of “Why Won’t They Talk To Me?” to that austere list.

Xinobi, who was last featured here mixing Moullinex’s “Darkest Night,” says the track is best listened to via headphones, and I agree — if only to capture the largeness and intricacy of the sound. Put this on replay a few times and the magic of their Coachella performance will keep returning to you….

Prepare to step into a psychedelic secret garden when you listen to Secret Colours‘ ”Blackbird (Only One).” All I keep thinking about while listening to this track is some tripped out scenery with mirages of unusual horticulture and rainbow-colored sky.

So basically, this song is great if you’re into mind-altering substances. It’s droney with a touch of kraut. Secret Colours easily melds a couple genres together: the psychedelic 60s and the grunge-filled 90s. Together you get a melancholy wonderland of retro fuzzed-out guitar adorned with spacey pedal effects and lulling, hypnotizing vocals.

May 28, 2013 is the date to remember. That’s when Secret Colours will be releasing their upcoming album, Peach.

Ever wonder what a female version of Tame Impala would sound like? Well, look no further than Melody’s Echo Chamber, and with good reason.

“Crystallized” was recorded at Melody’s grandparents’ house in Cavalière, France, where she was joined by Kevin Parker of Tame Impala. So, with the knowledge that he was responsible for mixing this track, it should come as no surprise that there’s an uncanny resemblance.

“Crystallized” will be released on 7″ via Fat Possum later this year, probably overlapping Melody’s tour of the US this Autumn. In the meanwhile, catch the accompanying video below.

Every time I buckle down to write a post about a band like this, I can’t help but invoke statements about the “return of psych-rock.” But it’s unavoidable: Unknown Mortal Orchestra clearly joins the ranks of Foxygen, Tame Impala and Telekinesis in bringing psychedelic music back to the foreground, and I’m absolutely loving it.

“From The Sun” comes off Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s sophmore album II, which was released February 5, 2013 on Jagjaguwar. I haven’t had a chance to listen to the full thing, but you can bet your buttons that I’m going to make an effort to grab it. If you’re with me, you can head over to iTunes for a download.

Once again, hats off to record label Jagjaguwar for getting behind an awesome band.

While taking a trip to North Lake Tahoe this last weekend, there was a song that kept playing over and over on Sirius XMU station. Low and behold, it was a fresh new (sort of) track by Cayucas called “High School Lover.” I say “sort of” because the track was previously performed by their formerly known band named Oregon Bike Trails. More importantly, and not to take away from what they have got going for them now, the song is gold. It soon became our anthem for the weekend — we listened to it maybe a dozen times over two days.

Cayucas are a California-based group that has a cool beach pop sound; think modern day Beach Boys meets Beck. The track “High School Lover” has a effervescent and contagious feel to it, which is probably why I didn’t mind listening to it over and over. While spending my college years in San Luis Obispo, a town neighboring Cayucos, it’s clear that the band and their sound has a happy marriage of the slow surf-like life that surrounds the coastal area.

“High School Lover” comes from their debut album Bigfoot, which will be released April 1, 2013 via Secretly Canadian.

Back in January, we covered Cull’s debut single “Good People Disappear,” describing as a band that’s “like a less verbose Of Montreal had a twisted, animalistic romp with Tame Impala and then had a threesome with Animal Collective.” Since then, they were nice enough to share the master with me for their new single “I Thought We Was” to premiere; and boy, its nice to see their style has developed exactly along those lines. Except this time I’d say its more obvious that Alcoholic Faith Mission probably liquored up that threesome to begin with.

“I Thought We Was” has mind melting, shoegaze atmospherics replete with some complex synths that reduce your mind into a hazy bliss on repeat listens. Under less capable hands, this song could have spun virulently out of control, but Cull has an uncanny talent for blending diverse instrumentation into a frothy, emotional journey without ever being lost to the bedlam that inspired the song. Their music is a beautiful experiment in pin-balling passionately through the chaos of you mind.

Tame Impala’s Lonerism has been an irrefutable hit across many countries and has been tweaked by several mixers, most of which we’ve featured on here before. Keeping up with this tradition, futuristic electronic artist Chrome Canyon gives us an emphasized synth mix of “Feels Like We Only Go Backwards.”

This rework takes the original to a more expansive atmosphere, with lo-fi electronics and glimmering psychedelia coming in and out of orbit behind Kevin Parker’s rhythmic vocals. In comparison to other mixes we’ve heard, this is definitely more low-key in terms of additional bells and whistles, but what we do have here is an uncontrived version that sweeping and swarming in all the right ways.

POND – Giant Tortoise

What's so good?

As big a year it was for Tame Impala, their “side project” POND (which also features members of other noted Australian bands) was right there with them. POND’s album – Beards, Wives, Denim – placed #7 on NME’s top albums of the year (as well as gaining a spot in our top Australian tracks of the year), and the band played a number of huge festivals locally and abroad. This was the band’s fourth album but they’ve already released details of their next – Hobo Rocket is scheduled for release later this year via Modular Recordings.

Luckily for us, we don’t need to wait till then for a POND fix. The album’s first single, “Giant Tortoise,” was unleashed late last week, and it’s already been burnt a giant hole in my ear drum. One of their most epic tracks to date, I love their ability to draw the listener in with dreamy, psychedelic sections before blowing up with a huge guitar riff or bass drop. Hobo Rocket has quickly jumped to the top of my most anticipated albums of the year ahead.

Currently on the road as part of the annual Laneway Festival tour, the band has also released news that each member will be releasing a solo record this year. How they find the time to be this awesome is beyond me.

What's so good?

Not to broach into fellow Shuffle blogger and resident Aussie band expert Hugh McClure’s turf here, but I had to cover this delectable marriage of atmospheric prog, space and psychedelic rock from a new band called Cull. It’s like a less verbose Of Montreal had a twisted, animalistic romp with Tame Impala and then had a threesome with Animal Collective; so, you know, no one knows who the father is.

But, boy, do they make one hell of a baby. Predictable arrangements (like in Of Montreal) are cast aside. The electric guitar mimics the horn, piano keys plink in the midst of controlled chaos, and the breakdown three-quarters of the way through is what you’d feel if you let music destroy your sanity. Sure, you’ll be a bit of a puddled mess by the end of the song, but it was so worth it.

When I picture this song finding its way outside the confines of my room, I imagine it would be right at home in a Garden State soundtrack where Andrew Largeman spends the entirety of the movie lost in that drug-fueled ecstasy haze party scene. Bristling with introspective jitteriness, this song inspires a love/hate fantasy in your brain much in the same uncomfortable manner as Andrew Largeman sitting on a couch grinning his face off at you.

Frank Ocean – Swim Good (Cave Painting Cover)

What's so good?

I’m sure it’s not kosher to say it yet, but this track excels far beyond Frank Ocean’s version. That’s no fault to the original artist; Ocean’s take was wholly original after all, and this is just a re-imagining. But I never fell in love with “Swim Good“ until now. When Cave Painting tackles the chorus, I feel wave after wave of an ocean-sized set of emotions wash over me.

The front and center vocals in Cave Painting’s version sound full-throated presentist: you can practically hear the crash of the waves in your ears, chatter your teeth in anticipation of a decision, and in your heart believe nothing else matters except what’s going on right now. It makes for a fascinating counterpoint to lyrics that quiver in between the dubious follies of a past that needs to be forgotten and a future that has as much potential to fail as make the singer lift off.

I don’t want to beat a dead horse in my coverage of covers, but there is something so disaffecting about needless reverb, distortion, and echo. And I give props to Frank Ocean for creating the structure of a brilliant song, with lyrics that read like an epic story on the page, but never quite connected with me sonically. I imagine this song, performed by Ocean, is brilliant live; but for now on my mp3, I’ll leave it to Cave Painting to carry the song’s message to me.

What's so good?

There’s clearly a resurgence of old-time psychedelic indie rock sounds. From Tame Impala to Foxygen, I have a feeling that 2013′s music festivals are going to be dominated by guitars.

Add to the list Telekinesis, a Seattle-based one-man-band whose last album found itself frequently played on my iPod in 2009. Today, lead man Michael Benjamin Lerner unveiled a new single titled “Ghosts and Creatures,” off his upcoming album Domarion.

If you dig it, you’ll be able to get it April 2, 2013 on Merge Records.

What's so good?

I stumbled upon Jesus Sons on SoundCloud, and I’m really very intrigued by them. I don’t know anything about them besides the fact that they’re from San Francisco and there are four band members. What I do know is that I loved their sound from the second I heard them.

“Going Down” is the song that caught my attention, and I can’t stop listening to it. This quintessential kraut rock quartet is doing what they want, take it or leave it. For me, I’ll take it. Their grimey, simplified approach to a genre that is known for grit and psychedelia is the perfect recipe to attract a broad audience of all ages. Basically, their music stands the test of time.

It seems as though Jesus Sons are pretty under the radar. For now, you can like them on Facebook and enjoy their SoundCloud, and hope that they come out of the woodwork some more.

What's so good?

Poolside have a history of putting a great spin on classic songs. Don’t believe me? Well, look no further than their cover of Neil Young’s “Harvest Moon.”

Yesterday they broke out a remix of “Planet Caravan,” originally shared as part of a larger mixtape. The Ozzy Osbourne-fronted Black Sabbath released the song on their breakout 1970 album Paranoid. It was then subsequently covered by Pantera in 1994, once again breaking into the limelight.

This is my favorite version, but I’m biased by age — classic rock and metal doesn’t do much for me, whereas Poolside certainly does.

Widowspeak – The Dark Age

What's so good?

Is it too late to start calling Widowspeak a buzz band of 2012? Because they’re batting 2/2 based on songs I’ve heard so far (the first was “Ballad Of The Golden Hour“).

Fronted by Molly Hamilton and Robert Earl Thomas, the duo’s style definitely isn’t the most elaborate out there. But, you could easily consider them part of the “guitar-driven-indie-rock” resurgence we’ve seen this year, and the present harmony is totally winning me over (a la Wye Oak).

“The Dark Age” will be released on their second album Almanac, due on January 22nd via Captured Tracks. Based on the two songs we’ve heard, we’re definitely keen to get a listen of the full album.

Best of 2012: Top Australian Acts

I never thought it would be easy, but selecting my favorite ten tracks from Australia’s amazing pool artists this year proved to be a ridiculously epic mission. I’ve reviewed well over 100 of my favorite Australian songs during 2012, and to highlight such a small percentage of them seems a travesty.

Australian music has gone from strength to strength. For the first time in twelve years, we had a U.S. #1, and Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used To Know” wasn’t just a flash in the pan, spending 8 weeks in the top spot. Others like Tame Impala, The Presets and The Temper Trap have continued their recent success, while young bands like San Cisco and Last Dinosaurs have started to gain huge popularity overseas.

What I love the most, though, is covering some of the lesser known bands. Bands with so much talent and potential who are just waiting for people to find out about them. My top ten covers a variety of genres, tracks from the overflowing indie pop talent pool, the emerging beats community, and others in the rock, dance, and psychedelic categories.

Australia is very privileged to have so much great local music, and it’s been amazing sharing some of it with you this year. I hope you’ve enjoyed it as much as I have.

Honorary mentions go to tracks from Made in Japan, Hayden Calnin, Van She, Alpine, Flume and Dappled Cities. Sorry guys.

Music is supposed to be fun, and this track from Melbourne producer DCUP is just that.

Song: Pond - Fantastic Explosion of Time [Downloa d]

It’s been a big year for this Tame Impala “spin off” band, who I actually prefer. Incredible live, their album Beards, Wives, Denim placed #7 on NME’s top albums of the year (with Lonerism receiving top honors).

Song: The Townhouses - Diaspora (Ft. Guerre) [Downloa d]

One of the most talented ambient/downtempo producers in Australia, The Townhouses’ Diaspora has been my favorite electronic release of this year.

Song: Collarbones - Missing [Downloa d]

Collarbones’ Die Young LP was an intriguing mix of electro, R&B and beats, resulting in one of the sexiest albums of the year.

Song: Deep Sea Arcade - Outlands [Downloa d]

Released earlier this year, Deep Sea Arcade’s Outlands album is still on regular rotation at my place. Their psychadelic indie pop sound is finally gaining them the recognition they deserve.

Song: Thrupence - Voyages [Downloa d]

Thrupence’s delicate, layered chillwave is an absolute delight, and his seen the Melbourne-based 21 year old develop a strong following during his short career.

Song: The Laurels - Changing the Timeline [Downloa d]

Sydney band The Laurels are one of the reasons grunge music is going through a renaissance in Australia. A truly talented act who complete their sound with elements of psych, shoegaze and blues.

Song: Tame Impala - Elephant [Downloa d]

What can I say about this group that hasn’t already been said? “Elephant” was my favorite track on their lauded Lonerism album.

Song: Olympic Ayres - The View [Downloa d]

Here’s one to watch for 2013, with a third EP due for release early next year. Olympic Ayres have seen their notoriety grow with a run of energetic live shows.

Song: Last Dinosaurs - Andy [Downloa d]

I’m very confident that this band’s local success will soon carry over onto the global market. Their debut album In a Million Years was chock full of indie pop gems, with “Andy” being a standout.

What's so good?

The blog Gorilla vs. Bear does this pretty cool thing where they let artists take over their blog. A while back Grimes was behind the wheel; yesterday it was Memory Tapes.

As tends to happen, he took the opportunity to showcase some of his eclectic taste. Fortunately for us, he also released this amazing remix of Tame Impala’s “Feels Like We Only Go Backwards.”

The original song has garnered a fair bit of attention, probably because the band has weighed heavily on it live. Personally I think they’ve got better tracks up their sleeves, but if there’s anything that could sway my mind, it’s this remix.

That’s because Memory Tapes adds a wonderful layer to the nostalgic throwback-sound of the original. It’s almost like this track was written and composed in 2012, again.

Mitzi – Truly Alive (Rehearsal Session)

What's so good?

A not-so-hidden secret about me is that I hate romantic love songs, especially revolving around infidelity. The banality of having to listen to yet another song about how he/she, he/he, she/she, they/they or any other combo coulda-shoulda-woulda done something different to stay in your heart’s good graces and keep your pants tingling places them outside my wheelhouse. Give me an introspective look on life like Janelle Monae’s “Cold War“ or Tame Impala’s, “Solitude is Bliss“ any day of the week.

Which is why, while I recognized the quality of Mitzi’s production skills and noticed something special about the band in their previous release, “Who Will Love You Now?“ they didn’t really connect with me until now. Mitzi cross over into some serious Holy Ghost! and LCD Soundsystem areas here, with tight electronic production over spoken word vocals. But the gem of the song is the lyrical content: an enigmatic trek through the band’s memories of better days and a plea to return to that feeling of being truly alive. Music that inspires the despondent core in you to get moving? Now that I could listen croon about.

Mitzi’s latest release is part of a spate of awesome tracks previously featured on Indie Shuffle from the label futureclassic, including Panama’s, “It’s Not Over“ and Flume’s “Star Eyes.” If they keep this streak up, they are in for one successful 2013.
