What's so good?

I think Gorilla vs Bear put it best when they said the new Mikky Ekko track “swells.” It’s the kind of track that feels like an oxygen mask, blowing life into your lungs with each beat. It swells my tattered, liar heart and plays it like a lyre. And it’s such an expert player at that, all I can do is let re-energize me.

Everything about this song — from the repeating “ooh ahs” that sound angelic to the affirming lyrics — feels like a “fresh breath of innocence.” It’s a song about finding the sun in the cold wasteland of your life and having another take you away to disappear inside it. By the time I heard the exquisite synths on the bridge, I said to myself, “Holy shit, I’m powerless here,” all I could do was lay back in my desk chair at work and disappear in the track’s warmth.

What's so good?

It seems like every time Ryan Hemsworth releases a new track he proves yet again why people are calling him one of the most talented up-and-coming producers. His newest track, “Perfectly,” is no exception.

On “Perfectly,” Hemsworth channels his fellow Canadian Teen Daze; the track features a downtempo chillwave vibe, which really suits Hemsworth’s production skills. There are also plenty of little interesting nuances care of some seamless samples; and that toy piano peppered throughout the track… it almost reminds me of the very end of the old Jimmy Eat World song “Goodbye Sky Harbor.”

I kind of feel like if Disneyland made a ride based on electronic music, this would probably be the song playing in the background. I mean that in the best possible way; it’s simply a fun, laid-back ride, and the perfect track to help kick off summer.

What's so good?

Small Black is a chillwave artist, and like most bands in that genre, they have looked past the label and are continuing to create unique music; their sound improves with every record.

Their newest release is called Limits of Desire. There’s a light, airiness to the songs, mostly created by the synthesizers — but behind the big sound is always a smooth back beat. This first single, “Free at Dawn,” is a perfect example of what Small Black is trying to accomplish on Limits of Desire; it kicks off the album with a hypnotic mix of synths and drum beats.

If you’re a fan of bands like Washed Out, Blackbird Blackbird, MillionYoung, Neon Indian, or Teen Daze be sure to check them out.

Way back in 1998, a musical collaboration known as Stardust came together for one song. Made up of Alan Braxe, Benjamin Diamond and Daft Punk’s Thomas Bangalter, they managed to get their song “Music Sounds Better With You” stuck in the consciousness of millions.

Flash forward 15 years, and the track is still recognizable — even when it undergoes a remix courtesy of up-and-comer Giraffage.

If you’re digging what you hear, SF-based Charlie Yin has gone ahead and made this one available for free download. Figured you might be into that :)

Even though we just featured an awesome remix of Phoenix’s new track “Trying To Be Cool” by RAC yesterday, I just couldn’t resist sharing another remix with y’all. This time, its remixed by the British bloke Will Bloomfield, who is also part of the folk rock band Port Isla.

The Bloomfield version takes more of a retro approach by bringing a downtempo, synthy vibe to the mix. To think that Bloomfield created this sort of style of a remix while being part of a folk rock band really shows his musical diversity and taste.

This remix is truly worth a listen and a share. Oh, and by the way, apparently there is a Creators Project out asking for more remixes of this particular track, so I am sure this is not the last time you will hear a version of “Trying To Be Cool.”

Sunday Night Chill: Teen Daze, Fauxe, Houses + More

I feel like so many of my Sunday Night Chill playlists have one thing in common: they make me want to get in bed and drink hot chocolate (or sit by a fire and drink red wine — pick your poison). But not this playlist.

It’s been gloriously sunny and warm in San Francisco over the past few days, and this weekend I was lucky enough to escape to wine country. I spent the weekend drinking crisp white wine with the sun on my shoulders. It was blissful.

So crank up this playlist, sit on your patio with a cold beverage in hand, and soak up the spring sunshine before the night settles in. It’s only getting warmer, folks.

What's so good?

Danny Choi, aka Ghost Loft, has taken a more subtle approach with his euphoric track “So High.” While he’s already impressed me with his remixes and single “Seconds,” it comes as no surprise that this track has stand-out qualities, separating him from other artists that classify themselves under the chillwave genre.

The title appropriately describes the feeling I get when I listen to it without being totally obvious and forced. The slowed-down electronics combined with reverberated synths and Choi’s sweetly sung vocals are the perfect combination to mellow out to after a long day. Open a window, collapse on your couch, let the gentle breeze sweep over you, and press play.

I’ve always been a huge fan of Teen Daze, and that includes his remixes. So you can bet your buttons that when a new one comes along, I’ll be right there on top of it.

Such is the case for Wake Owl’s “Wild Country,” a song which was released two months ago on his debut EP (via Vagrant Records). The original has a strong alt-country feel, heavy on the stringed instruments.

Clearly if you’re familiar with the original, you’ll observe that Teen Daze’s chillwave approach has totally flipped this track on its head. The result is that I can’t say one is necessarily better than the other because these are two totally different songs. And therein lies one of the reasons that I dig remixes :)

What's so good?

Remember when Beirut went all chillwave? “Venice” could quite well qualify for a spot in our regular Sunday Night Chill, but when this song came up in my music library I couldn’t help but reminisce.

And for that, it gets the Song of the Day slot — approximately four years after it was released on the EP March of the Zapotec/Holland.

Ultimately, this one is setting a nice mood for my first couple days in Amsterdam.

What's so good?

Between recent releases by Tourist, Sally Shapiro and now this stellar Germany Germany track, 2013 is shaping up to be the year that experimental pop gets lost in the great expanse of space. The genre has moved far beyond the celestial surfing days of M83, and utilizes its synthesizer heavy method to simulate the journey of (wo)man against the universe.

However, while Tourist and Sally Shapiro have used this as a means to rocket one past their fears, Germany Germany infuses the frostiness of space into every note. His synth work is bloody affecting, immediately trapping the listener in the headspace of our song’s protagonist. By the time the vocals start to chant about “never needing someone,” the instrumentation has progressed to the point where we are shot out farther in the landscape to see how much of a lie that is.

“Saturn” plays like an intrepid explorer finding himself in the fetal position on the rings of a planet’s icy, galactic roadways, racking his mind for an answer to the loneliness that ails him. It’s a beautiful treatise to joys and dangers of exploring new frontiers within yourself.

If you don’t know Germany Germany, you really should. I’ve been a massive fan for years and his album, Adventures, is still one of my favorite experimental pop albums of all time. Check out more on his SoundCloud and catch a free download.

What's so good?

Considering how much electronic music I’ve reviewed recently, it wouldn’t be fair to leave out one of Sydney’s most promising acts, Polographia. While the duo hasn’t released anything for a little while (their debut album Dinner for Two is due for release midway through this year), their Sunsets EP from 2011 is well worth a listen. You can download it in full on their Bandcamp – what a generous bunch!

Previously DJs before branching off into production, they certainly have a nose for a crowd-pleaser. “Righteous Hit” was the front-running track off the EP, and for good reason — glitchy and sun-drenched, their chillwave style compares favorably with the likes of Toro Y Moi and Washed Out.

Aside from their album release, the next few months will be busy for the boys. Firstly appearing at the xxyyxx show in Sydney, they’ll then be setting off around the country as the main support for fellow Sydney-siders RÜFÜS. 2013 is set to be a huge year for Polographia.

Teen Daze – Light & Love

What's so good?

Generally speaking, anytime British Columbia’s Teen Daze releases a track, I am totally stoked. However, his newest single is released on a somewhat sad note.

The track is called “Light & Love,” and was written to raise awareness for Benjamin Curtis of School of Seven Bells. Curtis was recently diagnosed with T-cell Lymphoblastic Lymphoma, and as he begins battling the cancer, his friends have set up a website where you can show your support for him. You can check out the site right here and give your support, prayers, well wishes, etc.

The song is another example of how Teen Daze has truly made producing tracks an art. With warm synths and piano, few producers can build a soundscape like Teen Daze can, and I can only imagine Benjamin Curtis listening to it and being encouraged as the musical community rallys behind him.

With that, Benjamin Curtis we wish you a speedy recovery and strength through this difficult time.

A few months back, fellow Shuffler Anu had shared a beautiful track from the brilliant UK producer Stuart Thomas (who goes by the moniker Mountain Range). The musical world is definitely starting to notice Mountain Range; yesterday he released a few remixes of the track “It’s Lonely Around People, Too,” from artists like Sun Glitters, Ole Torjus, and Teen Daze for free on his Bandcamp.

I really enjoy the spin that Teen Daze has put on the track. Keeping true to the laid-back mood and seemingly intentional disconnect of the original, Teen Daze manages to instill his own chillwave flavor. He opens up with some of his signature synth patches, and slowly adds layer after layer. There is plenty here to dissect; whether it’s the vibraphone hinting in the back or the softly played piano, Teen Daze really shows some love to an already emotion filled track.

What's so good?

Do you ever get a brain chill? Not the ice cream kind! It happens when your head feels like a balloon filled with the heaviest of air, and then a moment comes along with sharp magic, penetrating your mind’s exterior; the weight of limitation escapes and peace rises up your neck from all sides to fill the much-needed void. Hopefully this track gives you this feeling, as it did to me.

You may remember Dido’s collaboration on A.R.Rahman’s “If I Rise,” from the soundtrack to 127 Hours, and thinking she is simply a tool for a voice that has to be from the heavens. The singer escaped for awhile there, only dropping “Let Us Move On” with Kendrick Lamar in 2012, but she has returned this week in full force with her fifth album, Girl Who Got Away, featuring “No Freedom.”

I listened to the original version here, but Jonathan Dagan takes me to the place I most want to be taken to when hearing Dido’s voice. The Grammy-nominated producer invokes tropical nostalgia, and I can’t shake the visceral image of a sun both rising and setting in the distance. Orchestral waves wash hope ashore from across the world, as we hear, “Even when you don’t see me/Even when you don’t hear/I’ll be flying low below the sun/And you’ll feel it all out here.”

Work Drugs’s duo Tom Crystal and Ben Louisiana last appeared on Indie Shuffle with “Young Lungs“ back in December 2012. Now, they are about to set on short Midwest tour (check dates here) and to celebrate, they released a new track.

“Sunset on High Street” is a indie pop song with great keyboard work and nice saxophone play to create a smooth finish. This song is their first single off an untitled album due out sometime this summer.

According to the band, “The song was written about a homeless man named Milton Angland that we met on our last trip to Los Angeles. He shared with us stories of warm days on the fringe, the beauty of endless gridlock, the smell of a California summer breeze, the homeless community in L.A., revolution, and the people in Hollywood who gave him a chance.”

What's so good?

A testament to my inner music geekery, I couldn’t even get out the door to a night of fun and live music without blogging about this track first.

Greco-Roman hasn’t hit us with a gem in a while. While Hackman’s off hacking away, T.E.E.D’s off doing dino laundry, Enchante is just waking from his winter slumber, Goddard is giving brilliant interviews… and so on… Roosevelt, a.k.a Marius Lauber, is picking up the slack with “Around You.”

It’s a blissful, sensual music. It’s ambiguously expressive in that I can’t decide if it’s seductively tempting or sweetly penetrating. Either way, it’s making me feel awesome, and as I shimmy my way out the door hopefully you’ll be waking up to this amazing tune.

What's so good?

Listening to this track, anyone else suddenly reminded of Primitive Radio Gods‘ ”Standing Outside a Broken Tollbooth With Money In My Hand”? If so, your musical encyclopedia is better than mine, and you rule. If not, there’s never any harm in a little investigating:

Durday, who is one half The Soundmen, went on to say that he’d always wanted to sample aforementioned track and that “Visions” was just right. I couldn’t agree more, and props to The Soundmen for reminding me how much I liked “Standing Outside A Broken Tollbooth with a…..” eh… you got it.

We blew it up earlier this month, but Visions EP drops today and with it the premiere of this niffty video, which makes me wish I wasn’t so squeamish about large bodies of water.

This track is dreamy. Swirling and seeped in everything that synthwave, shoegaze and dream pop possesses, this Sun Glitters remix does wonders to Blue Foundation’s “Lost.”

Released in January 2013 on Blue Foundation’s In My Mind I Am Free Reconstructed (an album compiled of a bunch of remixes by artists such as Neon Cloud, Opiate and Ghost Bike), this track was the opening track, and for a good reason.

MillionYoung probably landed on my radar back in 2009, when our editor Hannah recommended that I check him out. It was right around that time that I was listening to Memory Tapes feverishly, so naturally I ended up liking the Florida-based Mike Diaz.

Ironically, MillionYoung’s new track “Variable” actually sounds a whole lot like Memory Tapes’ 2009 album Seek Magic. And given that I’ve had a hard time getting into new material from Memory Tapes, this is actually a pretty welcome similarity.

“Variable” is the title track off MillionYoung’s upcoming album Variable, which will be released February 12th via Old Flame Records / Rix Records.

What's so good?

As soon as “The Beauty Surrounds” begins, I imagine a broken heart, slowly dragging itself across the ground, intent on moving forward. Twinkling synths chime in, surrounding vivid memories and providing moments of respite. By the third minute, the solitude of fluttering percussion overwhelms. This is track about love lost, but it’s so lovely, it’s the reason people try to fall in love again and again.

Houses is the project of Chicago-based Dexter Tortoriello and Megan Messin. Between the two of them, they have battled addiction and explored the life of simplicity in one of the most beautiful places. Surely their range of life experience contributes heavily to the intense emotion emanating from their music.

Their upcoming album, A Quite Darkness, is expected for release April 16, 2013 on Downtown Records. In the meanwhile, listen to another single off their album posted here on Indie Shuffle, aptly named,”Beginning.”

Houses is the perfect little indie outfit. With a molasses Beach House pace, Kings of Leon weighted vocals, and Band of Horses serenity, they are a poster child for indie rock. Shoegazers and dancers alike can enjoy their music harmoniously, simultaneously, as one. Maybe even holding hands…

My first experience with Houses was due to a good friend of mine while we were living in Seattle. “Have you heard Houses?” she would ask. Regretfully at the time, my reply was a simple no. So strong was her passion that she promoted them at the local radio station where she worked, and her boyfriend even convinced them to write her a song for Valentine’s Day. Disgustingly, beautifully thoughtful on his part, but the point being that this shows the caliber of musicians Houses really is. Not only are they great songwriters, they are overtly human and caring.

“Beginnings” is their latest lo-fi single — overdue from the soft and lovely “Soak it Up” — and carries a bit more weight and maturity as to be expected from a second release. The lyrics, poignant to say the least, are so depressingly heavy it almost seems possible to wrap yourself in them as they fall from Dexter Tortoriello’s mouth.

A Quite Darkness is due out this April via Downtown Records.

A flurry of love, and a chink in the armor is revealed. Suddenly the cascade of romance feels like thousands of snowflakes making landfall on the forgotten tundra inside your heart. Or say you’re basking in the rays of light on the summer beach hand in hand, and you didn’t notice that love’s tidal wave had taken you into depths of the ocean — it’s fucking cold down there. You said, “I Wanna Go“ to love, and now you’re there. What do you do? Run for your life.

“So, you’re acting on your own, I know its time to run. Soon you’ll see me on my own, I’ll better on my own. Hit me up again.”

Meaning: I’ll hit you back, lover, once I no longer scare myself. One of the reasons I don’t believe in unerring, eternal love is that if intimacy makes you grow, it should also make you flee to regroup at times.

Summer Heart gets this concept. Connection and disconnection for growth and survival: these are the fraternal twin themes explored so far by Summer Heart in his most popular singles.

What's so good?

Teen Dazeand Braids together is my kryptonite. His remix of Braids’ hit “Glass Deers“ is my fifth favorite song of all time, and there isn’t a week that goes by that I don’t listen to it multiple times. That alchemy between the two artists, while not as strong as the first go around, creates an almost aurally debilitating, magical experience in his re-imagining of the Max Cooper and Braids collab “Pleasures.”

Twinkling synths pepper the track and feel as future-oriented as anything out there this year, save Ryan Hemsworth’s production. The vocal glitches feel like valleys filled with pillows going through an earthquake. The valleys shimmy and shake, but as much as they unsettle you, they also lull you into a beauteous, horny dream.

Listen to the track a few times and you might just coo right along with Braids lead singer, that it “feels so right.” If you aren’t already, follow Teen Daze on his SoundCloud and give the original track some love.

What's so good?

As a modern-day gypsy, I pretty much had Vacationer’s “Trip” on an endless loop when it came out. I love it so much that it’s been on my tumblr’s playlist forever. Yes, I have a playlist on my tumblr. And now I can update it!

Vacationer has released the six-track EP, Good As New (Remixes) on iTunes. It took me awhile to settle on which track to post, but I’ve decided that first place goes to Silent Rider’s remix. It gives me that sunny chill only available in paradise. It’s walking along the ocean until finding the perfect beach hut, with the best music, to lounge in all day long. If you don’t have that memory yet, then hopefully this track will inspire you.

Second place goes to Data Romance’s upbeat dance version, for when the sun goes down, which you can enjoy on Vacationer’s SoundCloud, along with the rest of the remixes. What's so good?

John Jago is the one man electronic band behind Brothertiger. His original version of “Reach It All” displays his chillwave roots and pop sensibility. But with Digit‘s version, the track comes to the dance floor; a hybrid of animalistic beats and human emotion, filling out the true intent of Jago’s musical namesake.

As the intro pulses, I’m quickly reminded of Robyn’s “Dancing On My Own.” Although the resemblance fades thereafter it’s an obvious foreshadowing of an 80s influenced pop number requiring a house party and some quality speakers.
