What's so good?

Now, this may not be a new track to you, but it’s new to me.

The Generationals have been featured here on Indie Shuffle a few times, yet I just stumbled across this spectacular group for the first time this afternoon. As I’m sure a wise man once said: “Another day, another discovery.”

“You Got Me” was first released in 2011 as part of their four-song EP dubbed Medium Rarities (which we reviewed here). That said, it seems this sweet little ditty has also found a place on their most recent project, their third LP titled Heza.

The track is a minimal synth song dubbed with singing that sounds like a few of folks in the woods sitting around a campfire. There’s also some commentary in the background that sounds something like a drunk old man doing stand-up, but I can’t understand anything he’s saying. Pretty sure it’s Alan Watts, which is great in my book.

I will no doubt be playing “You Got Me” again, especially when in need of vibes that are of the chill type.

Slander is a five-piece rock combo from Mystic, CT. The lead singer, Julia Farrar, contacted drummer Rich Freitas about a year ago to see if he wanted to form a new band. He said, “Yeah, let’s do this.” They then filled out the lineup with guitarists Grayson Connelly and Luke Hunter and bassist Chris Wimpfheimer.

“Magnet” is their first official single. It’s got a post-punk feel, powerful guitar rifts, and rocking vocals by Juila Ferrar. Check out the B-side to this single, “Ghost,” and also watch a music video featuring both songs here.

Misun – Darkroom

What's so good?

At this point, I think I’m in love with Misun. We’ve covered them twice on Indie Shuffle, and at this point their songs just seem to get better and better. For my ears, at least, they’re batting a perfect 3 for 3.

Billing their sound as “Aquawave,” the Washington DC-based trio’s lineup includes Misun Wojcik, William Devon, and producer Nacey. Their sound is simple and easily likened to a carefree beach feel. In fact, it’s working perfectly for the wonderful summer weather that I’m experiencing in LA (isn’t it supposed to be winter?).

Not entirely sure what else the band has up their sleeves at this point, but trust us: we’ll be looking out for the next track.

What's so good?

Melbourne five-piece Tullly on Tully is the brainchild of singer/songwriter Natalie Foster. Formed in 2011, the band will be releasing their debut album later this year after a number of successful single releases gained popularity locally. This LP will include the recently released track “Stay,” on which they collaborated with fellow Melbournite Hayden Calnin (who was recently selected amongst Triple J’s Next Crop for 2013).

A charming and upbeat song, it comes as no surprise that this was originally a poem given its measured rhythm. Foster has one of those voices impossible not to fall for, and combined with the strong tones of Calnin, it’s a perfect match. The backing is simple but fresh, and with two great vocalists, it’s all you need.

I like these guys a lot. You probably will too.

What's so good?

We’ve covered Generationals twice already, and both times they were awesome (check out “When They Fight, They Fight” and “Medium Rarities“). So, I figured I’d give New Orleans duo Ted Joyner and Grant Widmer a little more attention.

Of the three songs, “Lucky Numbers” is actually the most synthy. In that, however, it does not stray from the 80s-esque indie pop sound that the band have been forging ahead with. In fact, turns out it’s quite a fun track to listen to.

The track comes off the band’s upcoming EP by the same name (Lucky Numbers), due October 2nd.

As of late, Grimes has been surfacing across several media platforms for her distinctive music, risky style and absurd videography. With her latest album Visions receiving plenty of hype treatment, it was only a matter of time before we came across a Grimes cover that really impressed us.

Not a stranger to Indie Shuffle for her rendition of The Ronettes “Why Don’t They Let Us Fall In Love”, Maya Laner is welcomed back with open arms for her latest release.

Skillfully covering Grimes track “Oblivion”, Laner mixes up the original a bit, adding a resonating surf rock treatment with plenty of melodic jingling, guitar and sugary vocals. Despite its new embellishments, “Oblivion” still conducts the catchy undertones of the original version but with smooth retro style.

Here’s what she had to say about the song:

“I chose to cover Grimes primarily because I thought it would be an interesting challenge to revamp an electronic song. I’ve also just been really enamored with her lately. She has a really unique sound and look, and I admire her a lot as a female solo artist… I also really like the irony of the title “Oblivion” which implies being unaware of your surroundings. That concept is then juxtaposed with the narrator’s hyper awareness of bad things happening to them at night.”

Tennis created quite a stir at the start of this year when they released their new album Young And Old. Perhaps they’re trying to refresh our memory, because today the band released this Vacationer remix on their official Soundcloud page.

As with most tunes that Vacationer touches, there’s a very particular Disney-esque / Caribbean feel to it — almost as if (gasp) it could be the soundtrack to a vacation?!

It’s always quite distressing when artists debut a new album, especially when their former releases was such a success. Can they live up to the hype? Do they sound completely different? Have they sold out? These are questions music critics and fans always ask themselves in reaction and response to what they hear but rarely does an album spark fresh intrigue and nostalgia at the same time.

With the triumph of Teen Dream under their belts, Beach House has welcomed another stunning album with a suitable title. Bloom, the Baltimore duo’s fourth album, is big and full of power while unquestionably staying true to what they are best at: creating hypnotizing, tranquil tunes that send you on a hazed-out, magical journey toward a euphoric daydream.

It’s clear that Alex Scally and Victoria Legrand have been utilizing their extraordinary technical skills to bring swathes of layered emotion through very simple instrumentation. In an interview with Pitchfork, Scally refers to Bloom in comparison to previous albums saying, “I hate it when bands change between records, that’s not the way we work.” He is also quoted saying the album is like “a huge crystal, spinning in a cave with Star War figurines.”

In anticipation for the release, Indie Shuffle has already prematurely evaluated tracks “Lazuli”, and “Myth” with an overall consensus of them being “absolutely beautiful”, “delicate” and “tasteful” — statements I don’t think anyone can argue.

“The Hours” (the song featured above) has the musical quality and brash honesty to set fire to being fearful in love. The emblematic lyrics “Change your mind, don’t care about me/Frightened eyes looking back at me/Change your mind, don’t leave without me,” is something we can all relate to. Yes, most of us can sympathize, but Legrand makes the tender feeling sound so beautifully buoyant doesn’t she?

“Wild” starts off with a buzz and a gaping surge, while “Troublemaker” ignites a rather dark and enticing cacophony. The stylistic shifts between choruslines and instrumentals in these two tracks are both powerful and pervasive while the lyrical arrangements are reminiscent and emotional.

“Wishes” is a delicately harmonized track full of glimmering electronics, organ swells and Victoria Legrand’s softly sung sentiments and sorrows. To me, “Wishes” sounds like a stellar bonus track that could have been included in Teen Dream.

In Bloom’s final moments we are left with an album that is already getting the kind of momentum and attention indie bands would dream about these days. All we can hope for is more solid albums from this fantastical group in times to come. With that said friends, it’s time to sit back, relax, light up and (finally) enjoy Bloom in its entirety.

What's so good?

What’s interesting about the new Best Coast album The Only Place is that track 9, “Dreaming My Life Away,” appears to have been released as a bonus track all the way back in 2009 on the band’s Make You Mine 7″.

My best guess is that’s why it sounds so different to the mostly-redundant style embodied by the group. In fact, I’m going to go so far as to say that this song is surprisingly pleasant to listen to.

If there was music like this on the radio nowadays, I’d actually listen to something other than NPR, but unfortunately there’s not. Thankfully we have the Internet.

TV Girl is a band whose sound is one that even your grandparents would enjoy — their retro vibe brings you back and immediately strikes comparisons to the Beach Boys and other bands that have utilized the mass appeal of surf pop to their advantage. “It Evaporates” is the first viral hit off of their newest EP The Wild, The Innocent, The TV Shuffle Mixtape which was premiered through Stereogum a few days ago.

A perfect accompaniment to the transitionally bipolar weather we’re all experiencing this spring, TV Girl is a an excellent backdrop for almost any occasion.

Hello Vera make interesting music, a poignant hybrid of piano-pop and jazz. Having relocated to Sydney, Charmian Kingston and Jack Britten commenced proceedings as a duo in 2011. Kingston had toured extensively as a keyboardist in Australian pop-sensation Lisa Mitchell’s band, playing at a number of major festivals locally.

Now operating as a four-piece, including bassist Brendan Clark (formerly of Red Riders), they’ve released a four-track EP, Pigeons. “On the Road,” their debut single, is a simple but charming first offering. It’s full of rolling keys, steady percussion and harmonic choruses, with Kingston’s breathy vocals drifting throughout. Kingston’s voice, natural and fresh, is featured heavily during the EP, with the subtlety of the band paramount. “Trees” is a favourite – emotive and drifting. It seems to go through a number of phases, with delicate guitar and piano riffs creating a great layered effect.

Pigeons leaves you intrigued, it’s hard to pinpoint. Sometimes when listening to an EP, four of five tracks is plenty, but not with Hello Vera. Clearly talented musicians, they have done well with their debut. I believe there is much more to follow.

Blissed-out and totally catchy, this San Diego duo is a sure thing for those craving some vintage indie pop served sunny side up. Their new jam, “I Wonder Who She’s Kissing Now” is a wide-eyed 1960s throwback reminiscing over an unrequited love with hazy vocals, sugar coated instrumentation and distilled lyrical woes. Beyond the charming surface sounds, TV Girl obliges our eardrums with retro samples that either makes us ponder our own lovelorn pasts or propel us into a lush state of musical wonderment.

If you like TV Girl’s sound, the duo will soon be releasing their free debut album, The Wild, The Innocent, The TV Shuffle, online in a couple of weeks. Their EP, Benny And The Jetts, is also available for free download via Stereogum.

Swimwear – Easy High

Great find courtesy of the Electrorach blog, Swimwear Yeah is the side-project of Sydney-based Tim Derricourt (his other band is Dappled Cities, which I’ve yet to sample). About a month ago, he released his first EP The Kissing Machine, a sample of self-described “wild, camp dance music.”

Listening to this track alone, you might walk away thinking this is actually quite mellow. But, upon a full listen to the EP, you’ll quickly note that the tempo is considerably more upbeat. That said, “Easy High” is the stand-out track for me, so I thought I’d do my duty and share it with you!

Less than a week after a release of their superb new album Young & Old, the indie faithful packed into Lincoln Hall in Chicago for a round of Tennis Sunday night.

The husband-and-wife duo, Alaina Moore and Patrick Riley, took the stage along with drummer James Barone and another multi-instrumentalist who shared duties on guitar and keys for certain songs. As their sound has grown, so has their touring roster. A band that starts as a hobby inevitably faces the challenge of how to translate their music live, and this group has answered convincingly.

Beginning the night with the opening track from Young & Old “It All Feels The Same,” they introduced the audience to a new chapter in their story, and the it’s just as intriguing.

The band’s tale begins with a fairy tale ending, newlyweds casting off the shackles of society for a simple life of sailing and song writing; it’s instantly enviable. Though that may make them the model for budding indie dream pop duos everywhere, there are several factors that make Tennis unique. They really lived the music, and it provides an authenticity to their songs on stage. Sonically, the lo-fi, garage rock influence — along with Riley’s fuzzy guitar — adds a sly edge. Lyrically, on the surface day-dreamy love songs, there are nuggets of existentialism littered throughout, questioning the very nature of emotions — let’s not forget this couple met studying philosophy.\

“You can dance to this next one, though it might not seem like it,” Moore said as she introduced “Petition.” While the crowd remained relatively silent, you could almost feel a collective swoon between each song. With just two short releases, Tennis packed a more than satisfying 19-song-set — playing crowd favorites “Bimini Bay” and “Marathon,” along with their single “Origins.” While some bands may struggle to fill out a show on their sophomore release they were still debating between several songs to close with during the encore, finally deciding on Cape Dory‘s “Take Me Somewhere” in exchange for the listed “Seafarer.”

Tennis continues to tour across the country through the spring, including several shows at SXSW with a showcase March 16 at Club De Ville.

This might sound like an obvious statement, but Tennis’ newest Patrick Carney-produced album Young & Old is damn good.

The husband and wife duo’s back story is well documented. Patrick Riley and Alaina Moore met at the University of Colorado-Denver in a philosophy class, marrying soon after and setting sail on a months long expedition along the Eastern Atlantic Seaboard. It’s a great foder for their first album, 2011′s Cape Dory, but could have led to a stifled sophomore effort.

That’s what makes the depth of Young & Old all the more impressive. Alaina Moore’s delicate voice exudes with confidence and strength alongside Patrick Riley’s fuzzy guitar. While Carney’s productions sets Tennis, along with drummer James Barone, off kilter just enough to keep them fresh.

From Cape Dory‘s opening plea “Take Me Somewhere” Young & Old answers with Moore aching “Everywhere I go/it all feels the same.”

“Origins” is just one of those great songs, catchy and coy, as is the sassy “Petition.” The influence of Danger Mouse, Brian Burton, on Patrick Carney’s production style is evident on a track ilke “Robin” whose synth, tambourine, surf grooves make it sound like a lost Gnarls Barkley take.

Upbeat, and accessible, Young & Old is most of all sincere, and one of the first great albums of 2012.

For our viewing pleasure, Denver indie-pop dwellers Tennis released the video for their latest B-side track “Deep in the Woods” alongside their newest Patrick Carney-produced single, “Origins” (out now via Forest Family). Be patient when you click “play” above – track takes about 16 seconds to kick in.

In a recent Rolling Stone article, Singer Alaina Moore explains that “Deep in the Woods” is based on Shirley Jackson’s novel “We Have Always Lived in a Castle.” “It is the story of two sisters, devoted to each other to an extent that borders on mania,” Moore says.

It features two disturbingly close sisters living in total isolation, braiding each other’s hair and participating in unmentionable acts together, all while looking extremely blasé about it all. The video, paired with the Tennis’ lighthearted vocals and sugary disposition, adds a blithe subtext to a life seemingly full of perpetual melancholia. Although the segregated life may be a little drab at times, what better way to keep yourself occupied than to kill people and find arduous ways to dispose of their bodies? Sounds like a severe case of cabin fever to me. Check out the video below:

Summer Camp – Welcome To Condale

What's so good?

The harder it is to find search results after Googling a band’s name, the cooler they are. The more difficult to come across, the more exclusive they appear. Take for example similar artists Beach House or Tennis. According to this scale, Summer Camp is indeed a moderately hip band, and that may just be how Elizabeth Sankey and Jeremy Warmsley want it.

Laying low following the initial praise of their EP, they may now find the indie limelight unavoidable after the release of their first full-length LP Welcome To Condale, released November 8.

That being said, we’ve been big on Summer Camp all year. At SXSW 2011, the duo played an impressive line up, complete with projections of a never-ending set of lost family photos. As Christiana explained in her Young EP review, the band was birthed from the happenstance of a mixtape.

After the seemingly effortless success of their EP last year, the duo took a step back and better defined the project, producing a simply great album that captures the nostalgia of preppy 80s pop while matching it with the attitude of modern apathy.

The first single “Down” is undeniably catchy, and is accompanied by a fantastic Halloween party themed video. Songs like “I Want You” and “Done Forever” present an unassuming yet sneakingly infectious dance beat. Reproducing some of the tracks from the EP, the penultimate track “Ghost Train” still remains a stand out.

The final song, “1988,” seeks to mark a deceptive time stamp on the album, and in a lot of ways thats the reason I liked it so much. It sounds like it could be the soundtrack to a John Hughes film, or at the very least some new age teen rom-com with one of the Superbad kids. Much like its namesake, Summer Camp’s Welcome To Condale is just genuinely fun.

Tennis – Origins

What's so good?

Denver-based indie pop outfit Tennis have officially announced their new album Young and Old will be released February 14th of next year. That’s right, it’s keyed up for Valentine’s Day, which seems wholly fitting given Alaina Moore’s beautiful track on this latest single “Origins.”

Produced by Patrick Carney of The Black Keys, the album is shaping up to cause quite a ripple in the music world. No doubt, we’ll continue to provide coverage as we get our hands on more new singles!

Tennis – Tell Her No (The Zombies Cover)

What's so good?

Husband-and-wife duo Tennis are set to follow up their debut album Cape Dory with a new album to be released sometime early in 2012. The coolest part of it is undoubtedly that it is being produced by Patrick Carney, best known as the drummer for The Black Keys.

In the interim, they’ve just released this peach of a cover, which puts their surf-pop spin on The Zombies’ “Tell Her No,” a classic released all the way back in 1965. According to the band, this track has been a long-time favorite of theirs, and “is the best use of a lone-clap we’ve ever heard.” Not entirely sure what a lone-clap is, but I like it.

TV Girl – Benny and the Jetts EP

What's so good?

When the vocals kick in on “Benny and the Jetts,” it’s a little off-putting. But stick with the song, and listen to the entire album (which you can download for free on their Facebook page) and you’ll begin to warm up to the fuzzy vintage rock of TV Girl.

Trung Ngo and Brad Petering are from sunny San Diego – Ngo handles vocals, and Petering arranges the beats (taken from samples of everything from Dylan to Tracy Chapman to as Petering puts it, “some obscure 60′s garage rock song” downloaded haphazardly off the Internet). Pretty interesting combination, if you ask me.

Their sound is quintessential lo-fi pop with a backbone of old school R&B. It takes a few listens, but see if you can get into it.

What's so good?

Detroit’s Alex Winston is releasing an EP on September 19, and her title track “Velvet Elvis” was recently remixed by the popular RAC.

I was really impressed with her Sister Wife album, mostly because her vocals are unique and quirky without being overdone, but also because her songs are catchy as hell without being cliche.

Plus, she’s intelligent, too! Her Velvet Elvis EP juggles themes of “objectum sexuality” — how people fall in love with objects and often humanize them. The songs are light and full of energy, something that’s to be expected from her choice of producers (Bjorn Ytlling, who also produces Lykke Li).

Apparently her live show is entertaining — she plays with backing singers known as The Sisterwives. She’ll probably be on tour for a while, seeing as she’s releasing a full-length in January 2012!

Summer Camp – Better Off Without You

Christiana said it best when she described Summer Camp: “With so many bands endlessly attempting to encapsulate the spacey, entrancing, upbeat, synth-soaked music that overtook that decade, Summer Camp has effortlessly (and modestly) leaped right over everyone else.”

The London duo (Jeremy Warmsley and Elizabeth Sankey) are gearing up to release their debut LP, although they need some help from their listeners to finish the project (in exchange for some goodies, of course). “Better Off WIthout You” is their first single released from the upcoming album , and it keeps the electro 1980s vibe that their previous EP, Young, showcased so well.

What's so good?

When Christiana reviewed Twin Sister’s EP Color Your Life, she put it quite appropriately: “It’s old, it’s new, it’s up, it’s down… what IS it exactly?” Such is the case with their newest song “Bad Street,” off the upcoming album titled In Heaven.

When I listened to this track for the second time, I found myself sitting back, closing my eyes and just trying to take it all in. One might say I was a little hypnotized by its progression. Blending something from the 70s disco-era with something completely new and entrancing, Twin Sister put together a track that captured my full attention. Give a listen to the full thing. Then try it again. Perhaps you’ll find yourself in the same position I did!

Generationals – Con Law

What's so good?

New Orleans duo Ted Joyner and Grant Widmer are two guys that make the twist ‘n’ shout of the late 1960s even more enrapturing and joyful than typical sunshine pop bands nowadays. Even though Con Law was released in 2009, this campy 10-track album seems more relevant now than ever before, with stories of loneliness and shaky relationships intertwined with sweet melodies and time-capsulated rhythms. Con Law sounds as familiar as a stack of slightly scuffed 45s, and doesn’t really give much of a choice but to get up and dance your heart out.

Songs like the horn-laden “Nobody Could Change Your Mind” and the Motown girl-group sensibility of “When They Fight, They Fight,” articulate their modern approach to the best of vintage rock and show their appreciation for a bygone era.

The pleasantries of this album are not limited and the lyrical flirtations can cause you to feel like a high schooler again, but realistically, who doesn’t enjoy some sweet resonant sounds of a cherished ‘60s LP?
