What's so good?

With hit after hit, year in and year out, I am sure everyone knows by now that The Hood Internet are master mashers of indie music mixed with everything else. Therefore I feel it’s a bit redundant to give the down-low of their resume.

Today the Chicago based DJ duo give us a mashup with Purity Ring’s “Belispeak” and Frank Ocean’s “Pyramids,” and per usual, it’s a slick one.

What's so good?

I’m not a favorites type of person, but The Hood Internet is my favorite indie/rap masher upper. The Chicago-based duo just flipped a complete rippin’ track mashing Drake and Kavinsky together. I mean, if I was to ask for a mashup with an indie and rap artist, it would’ve been Drake and Kavinsky. So cheers for this one.

Year in and year out, The Hood Internet have been mastering the art of blending genres of hip hop and indie (everything), and their latest mashup “Mottovision” confirms just that.

Friday Five: The Edge Off, Ft. The Jane Doze, Medium Troy + More

The next time someone tells me the mashup is dead, I’m going to yell THE JANE DOZE in that person’s ear very loudly. It’s one thing to drop a decent rework every few months and have it get like 500 listens. It’s quite another to consistently conquer Hype Machine mountain the way The Jane Doze have — by working those social media networks and continually engaging with their fans.

I have to show several of my favorite discoveries — Medium Troy, King Dinosaur, and Ragnar Dagur — some love, too. Looking forward to what these artists produce in 2013. Same goes for Embässy, an Australian beatmaker who came from out of nowhere to dominate my listening sessions this week. All in all, the goal with this playlist is to press play and soak it all up. There’s a lot of bass, a few wobbles, and a truckload of atmosphere.

Hope it helps take the edge off.

Best of 2012: Mashups

Back in 2010, everything was about mashups. They were probably more prevalent than remixes, as everybody and their mother figured out how to overlap two tracks on their laptop.

The truth is that mashups have a tendency to suck (much moreso than remixes). So, this list doesn’t contain 10 tracks, but rather represents a “best of” lineup for the song mix category. It might have been longer, but I didn’t want to over-represent folks like The Hood Internet and Carlos Serrano.

Oh, and just for shits and giggles, I threw in Bastille’s silly mashup of The xx vs. TLC at the end.

It’s been a great year for music. Twelve months of fascinating discoveries, occasional duds, and a whole lot of goose-bumping. For my last Friday Five of 2012, I’ve decided to go back to my Indie Shuffle roots. This playlist taps some newer material from several of the first artists I ever hyped on this beautiful site.

Nothing but love for The Jane Doze, Myndset, Griz, DJ 21azy, and Butch Clancy. I’ve built relationships with some of these producers more than others, and it’s been awesome to see and hear them grow and evolve. These are mighty talented individuals who have been putting in work all year long. That’s why I want you to turn this playlist up — in celebration of ________ (insert your reason).

Who knows what 2013 will bring? If I was a gambling man, then I’d bet that we’ll be hearing a lot more from these artists.

What's so good?

The Hood Internet has become one of my favorite mashup duos as of late. With what seems like a rather simple formula of taking up-and-coming hip-hop artists and blending them with semi well-known indie bands, this Chicago duo proves that this type of structured music takes systematic skill.

Unleashed to the masses on May 1, “Pesobedear” is a tricked-out mix of A$AP Rocky’s hit “Peso” and Purity Rings “Obedear.” This track is so fresh and completely unexpected that upon first listen, I wasn’t sure what to think. However, after a couple of taps on the replay button my reservations were nonexistent and I couldn’t get enough of that hard-hitting sound The Hood Internet pulls off so well.

The hard swagger that A$AP Rocky exudes on each of his tracks is still reigning high on “Pesobedear” with downtempo rhythms and heavy verbiage. With A$AP’s hard-hitting verses blended with Purity Ring’s bombtastic beats, this song is nothing short of a weirdly awesome concoction of musical magnificence that many fans of both artists will enjoy.

What's so good?

Following a string of quality Katy Perry remixes, The Jane Doze come through in a big way with what may be their most ambitious mash-up to date. “Call Me Skrillex J. Robinson,” is a smooth blend of Porter’s “Language” and Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe,” with some Skrillex and Jessie J layered in for good measure. Yeah, my head almost exploded, too.

It’s hard to argue against the mainstream appeal of this track and the artists it features. It’s also hard to argue against the dance floor wizardry of The Jane Doze. Give “Call Me Skrillex J. Robinson” a listen or two and hear why for my money, it’s one of the best remix/mash-ups of the year. Antlers up.

Alright, I’m on the fence digesting this one. I almost turned it off after 10 seconds, but held out for the introduction of The Shins. Fortunately for The Hood Internet, it kept my attention long enough to get some airtime.

Don’t get me wrong — it’s borderline. But, there’s still some modicum of interest that keeps my attention.

SXSW 2012: A Preview of Saturday’s Best Music

Woohoo! Finally here in Austin. In case you missed it, I did a preview of Friday’s hot showcases, which includes songs from Santigold, White Rabbits and Neon Indian. Today, we’re back with another set of the best events, as well as some awesome songs (this one’s a bit more electronic/mashup driven).

Indie Shuffle’s SXSW coverage sponsored by Jeff Who Lives At Home, in select theaters this Friday.

AV Club Day Party (1pm – 6pm)
AV Club have managed to wrangle a pretty solid lineup that includes Cymbals Eat Guitars, The War on Drugs and White Rabbit. There will also be some appearances by Andrew W.K. I may or may not attend…

Fader Fort Presented by Converse (1:30pm – 8pm)
SBTRKT is playing the Fader Fort at 2:15pm, and I believe that’s where I want to be. They don’t have much else going on…but I’ve wanted to catch him for a while now.

Urban Outfitters Live In Austin (noon – 6pm)
The highlight of Urban Outfitter’s Saturday lineup is probably Grimes, what with all the hype around her. But, they’ve got some others that might not be too bad: Choir of Young Believers and Peaking Lights could be good catches.

Pure Volume House (2pm – 4am)
Pure Volume are heavy hitters in the online music world, so it’s no surprise that for a few years running, they’ve been one of the hottest spots for good shows. Saturday’s lineup includes a DJ set from The Jane Doze, as well as performances by Shiny Toy Guns and Gauntlet Hair. Frankly, I’d expect them to pull some bigger names, but meh.

Hypem Hotel (10pm – 4am)
Hypem Hotel continues its madness, with another showcase that’ll take us late into the evening. Saturday night they’ve got sets from Niki & The Dove, The Knocks, Wavves, Best Coast and Tennis, among others.

What's so good?

The Hood Internet have been blending new tracks left and right lately. Tonight they’ve released a mashup of Tyga’s “Rack City” and Neon Indian’s “Polish Girl.”

Neon Indian’s is obviously a bit of an older song, but the former is no doubt a nod to the recent release of Careless World: Rise of the Last King. You can check out another track off that album — “Kings & Queens,” which was posted as SOTD earlier this month.

What's so good?

Well, it has only been a day or two since I last posted a track by The Hood Internet (The Black Keys vs. Ace Hood), but here we are — back at it again. Ladies and gentlemen: presenting a brand new mashup of Wiz Khalifa and Phantogram by the one and only The Hood Internet.

The two tracks blend together perfectly, with Phantogram’s catchy hooks providing the perfect backing over which Wiz can drop his flow. The best part? Definitely the awesome album artwork. Apparently Wiz can take snow like a champ!

This feels like déjà vu. Just the other day I was listening to this really great Jane Doze mash-up. Well, two of ~~New York City’s~~ the world’s sexiest DJs are back behind the boards, pumping out more mega-pop dance tracks for our listening pleasure.

“Born to Feel Beef” reworks Lana Del Rey’s “Born to Die (Gemini Remix)”, Calvin Harris’ “Feel So Close”, and Steve Aoki & Afrojack’s “No Beef.” The net result is a mashup worthy of some good airtime on Indie Shuffle.

What's so good?

Mash-ups are a dime a dozen, so lucky for me this gem sort of just fell in my lap. While trolling SoundCloud, I noticed that Canadian dubstep duo Adventure Club had favorited a track. Not just any old track, though. It was a mash-up featuring Avicii and Adventure Club. It felt like a trap. No such track could exist. Could it?

I knew in two seconds that I would like “Bromance Call.” Trever Morgan, who’s from Southern California but currently DJs/studies at the University of Arizona, blends Avicii’s vocal edit of “Seek Bromance” perfectly with the warped electronic goodness that is Adventure Club’s “Collect Call.”

This track has been on repeat for forty five minutes. Sometimes that’s all you need to know.

What's so good?

2011 was an experimental year for music. New talent popped up out of the woodwork and established acts stepped away from the status quo, flooding the internet and airwaves with remixes, mash-ups, edits, mash-ups of remixes of edits and the occasional cover. A lot of it was bad, but some of it was really good.

One standout that always seems two steps ahead of the curve is New York City-based mash-up/remix/DJ duo The Jane Doze. Indie Shuffle is excited to exclusively premiere The Jane Doze newest track, “Kids, Set Fire To Someone That I Used To Know,” an eclectic mash-up featuring samples from Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used To Know”, Adele’s “Set Fire To The Rain” and Sebastian Ingrosso’s “Kidsos.” There is also some MGMT thrown in for kicks. You’ll know it when you hear it.

Nothing about “Kids, Set Fire To Someone That I Used To Know” is ordinary, but neither is anything all that ordinary about The Jane Doze. They are breathing new life into New York’s live music scene with their bubbly, thumping dance anthems and tearing up the blogosphere with audacious, fantastic cuts like “Bullshittin on My Coffee Break (Big Sean vs. Zeds Dead)” and “We Found Darkness (Rihanna vs. Avicii).”

There’s something perpetually uplifting about listening to The Jane Doze. They know how to keep the party bumping, even in their more chilled out efforts. “Kids, Set Fire To Someone That I Used To Know” is another top shelf offering from Jen and Claire, who meticulously layer the song’s many samples, synths and rhythms in such a way that it is nearly impossible to get through all 3:23 without smiling.

What's so good?

Sometimes I scour the web for days in search of a track worth sharing with my family, friends and all you wonderful Shufflers, and I still come up empty-handed. Other days, a great track smacks me in the face before I can get through the first verse, and in the span on fifteen minutes I’ve played the song five times.

“Want Those Beverly Hills Kicks” is a face smacker. The concept is simple enough: take Weezer’s 2005 hit “Beverly Hills” and replace the verses with the old-school rhymes from Run D.M.C’s “My Adidas.” The result is striking. It’s three and a half minutes of mash-up heaven.

DJ 21azy is not a familiar name to many music fans right now, but that’s okay. Kevin Nelson has been putting together some of SoundCloud’s best mash-ups for about a year now, and with “Want Those Beverly Hills Kicks” he combines two of pop culture’s finest ingredients into a smooth, head-bobbing track that should serve as an example to other producers out there.

Here’s hoping DJ 21azy finds a wider audience in 2012. This guy’s music is where I want to be.

What's so good?

I find it’s increasingly rare that mashups work really well, but The Jane Doze has nailed it by bringing together Big Sean’s “Bullshittin’” and Zeds Dead’s “Coffee Break.” And do you know what makes this even more interesting? The Jane Doze is a female DJ-duo. That’s right…two lovely ladies at the turntables.

Observations aside, I’m actually really glad these two tracks came together. I’d listened to the original by Zeds Dead a few times, but ultimately felt that it was missing a certain something to make it worthy of sharing. Right about now, I’ve got no hesitations.
