What's so good?

The L.A. DJ duo Classixx are about to release their debut album after previously getting a ton of accolades for remix work they did on songs by such artists as Phoenix, Yacht, and their New York counterparts Holy Ghost!

After a quick listen to a few tracks, I’d have to say it’s a very cool record — lots of slick production and electronic grooves. It might be one that doesn’t really connect as a whole, but the tracks can be put on in the background and it makes for a good time.

What's so good?

I’m not exactly sure how to classify King Krule’s “The Noose of Jah City,” and I don’t care to. The British artist used to go by the name Zoo Kid before taking on a Donkey Kong-inspired alias. The 19-year-old (!) Brit has a cartoonishly thin frame that belies his deep baritone and introspective subject matter. That’s pretty much all I know of him, factually.

Musically, I know the kid is on some other shit. His self-titled EP from 2011 houses this monster track we’re streaming today. Somber and moody, the song pairs a faint guitar and a backbeat with Krule’s booming vocals. The song feels like Sade’s slow bullet; it builds gradually, but before you realize it, it’s hooked you in. It’s obviously got indie aesthetics, but I hear a veritable hip-hop influence — not only in the rhythm, but the way the sampled chord changes come in. I’m nearly illiterate in terms of formal music composition and knowledge, so I could be flat-out wrong, but something tells me I’m not.

It doesn’t particularly take talent to get a buzz. A well-connected and well-implemented plan and the right aesthetics can do the trick, but it is very encouraging to see someone so young produce something of such force and gain recognition. I’m obviously late to the party, but I’m definitely keeping my eye on this guy.

WRLDS is a new indie pop duo from Nashville, TN comprised of masterminds Les Priest and Jake Goss.

“Communicate” is a synth-based track with well-paced vocals. They use a few different synthesizers and keyboards to create an especially unique sound.

This guy’s good. Marty Shaffer of Milwaukee, Wisconsin emerged into the world with undeniable force and sonic clarity. Within seconds of creating his Facebook and SoundCloud page for Gross Gross Girls, his debut EP titled Years was released to the masses.

“Asthenic” is the second track of the six known to Shaffer’s name at this point in time. Evident within these four sensual minutes, Gross Gross Girls utilizes Massive and FM8 through Garageband to play around with pitch effects and airy delay, stressing texture with a smoothed over humming bassline.

It’s that lo-fi warmth that seems to thematically stick throughout the entire musical offering — it gets me on each and every listen. You can blatantly hear the influences of Mac Demarco, Youth Lagoon, Toro Y Moi and Beach Fossils throughout the entire Years EP.

Shufflers, if there’s any up-and-comer to keep your eye out for, this guy is the one to watch.

Empress Of is the single effort of Brooklyn-based Lorely Rodriguez. The Spanish singer-song/writer can fluctuate between her native Spanish tongue or English, depending on her mood. Her latest track is a hazy ode to the 80s, with a dreamy vibe that makes you feel like you’re lounging in a meadow on a lazy summer Sunday. Her catchy hooks are infectious and perfectly laid over a psychedelic bed of synths and sound effects.

She’ll be touring with Jamie Lidell this spring, so make sure to catch her amazing live performance. Her debut EP is also out on Terrible Records in April on No Recordings, if you’re into that vinyl vibe.

What's so good?

Considering how much electronic music I’ve reviewed recently, it wouldn’t be fair to leave out one of Sydney’s most promising acts, Polographia. While the duo hasn’t released anything for a little while (their debut album Dinner for Two is due for release midway through this year), their Sunsets EP from 2011 is well worth a listen. You can download it in full on their Bandcamp – what a generous bunch!

Previously DJs before branching off into production, they certainly have a nose for a crowd-pleaser. “Righteous Hit” was the front-running track off the EP, and for good reason — glitchy and sun-drenched, their chillwave style compares favorably with the likes of Toro Y Moi and Washed Out.

Aside from their album release, the next few months will be busy for the boys. Firstly appearing at the xxyyxx show in Sydney, they’ll then be setting off around the country as the main support for fellow Sydney-siders RÜFÜS. 2013 is set to be a huge year for Polographia.

SXSW 2013: Friday Preview

The marathon continues! Two days down, two days left. And they just keep getting better and better! Yesterday I had the chance to catch CHVRCHES, S O H N, Ghost beach, and a whole lot more. Oh, and did I mention Diplo? Yeah, Virgin Mobile gave us a chance to be front and center for an awesome and incredibly small show.

Anyway…here’s what Friday has in store.

Windish Day Party
I keep saying that I want to see Alt-J, and so far have missed them. But this might be a good opportunity to check it out! On top of that, they’ve got Toro Y Moi, Sir Sly, Empress Of and so many more!

SPIN at STUBBS
As always, SPIN has a predictably strong lineup at their Stubbs show. This year Kendrick Lamar will be topping the bill, with Solange running up beforehand.

ASOS Music Lounge
Pacific Air, Dan Croll, Ghost Beach and Angel Haze. Put on with Red Touch Media, ASOS has a pretty solid lineup for the whole day.

Rhapsody Rocks
Overlapping the Windish Party is another great event by Rhapsody at Club DeVille, featuring The Walkmen and Foxygen. Definitely curious to check it out, given that this is the same venue we’re hosting our show at on Saturday.

Neon Gold Showcase
This is totally where I’m spending my evening. Neon Gold have been great all week, and their lineup includes St Lucia, Sir Sly, HAERTS, Xaphoon Jones and more! Oh, and open bar :)

Melbourne duo Oscar + Martin are some of the most inventive players in the local electronic scene, so whenever they do anything new we’re all over it. While we’ve already featured Oscar (who performs under the guise Oscar Key Sung), it’s Martin’s (King) time to turn some heads with his talent. Lucky for Indie Shuffle, we’ve been given the exclusive to his rework of soul collective Saskwatch’s track, “Your Love.”

The track is from their 2012 LP Leave it all Behind, and the original (which can be heard here) is a sugary-sweet pop song with plenty of Motown influence. King has added a complete new spin to it, reshaping the vocals of Nkechi Anele while adding plenty of the glitchy tones and beats we’ve come to expect from Oscar + Martin.

An interesting mix of styles has resulted in a bit of a mind-blower, just another reminder of what this talented Melbourne duo are capable of.

Flume is everything that electro music embodies: grungy, decelerated beats and synths with synthetic chord progressions, all bundled into a uniform sound. Based out of Australia, this industry youngster proves to be reaching quite a mature musical state, carving a prominent sliver in today’s music market.

After winning Future Classic’s submission contest back in August of 2011, Flume (Harley Streten) has been fast tracked to the big leagues, having toured with The xx and collaborated with heavy hitters like Chet Faker and T-Shirt, much to his honest surprise and delight. Sleepless is the EP that has made it all possible for this Aussie, and it was just released in the UK/Europe February 18, 2013 via Transgressive Records, and on February 19, 2013 in North America via Mom + Pop Music.

I had the honor of chatting with Harley, and caught up with him about his worthwhile journey thus far, having been catapulted into stunning musical accreditation in a shockingly short span of time.

You have quite an interesting relationship with a cereal box. Tell us about that.
Ah, the old cereal box story. Well, I was shopping with my Dad when I was 11 and there was this Nutrigrain box that contained this simple loop-based music software program inside. I thought it sounded kind of cool so we got it, installed it and I started mucking around. I realized the drums, the synths and the bass were all on different lines, they were all separate layers. That notion fascinated me; the whole concept of how music was layered like that to make one big sound. Ever since then I’ve adopted it as my hobby and I remember showing all the kids my beats on the bus ride to school.

Who were you listening to when you first began producing seriously?
When I signed up with Future Classic in late summer of 2011, it got me thinking I could really make something of this. My goal was always to make a comfortable living of doing what I love, and this signing made me realize this goal was possible. Around that time I was listening to a lot of dance, house, techno, electro and trance music, as I had been all my life. In 2008/2009, that music kind of died for me and I began listening to Flying Lotus, Shlohmo, Four Tet, and Bonobo. After finding that stuff, the Flume sound emerged.

Your first release was the Sleepless EP back in 2011. How did this come to be?
I don’t know, I really just mucked around. I started doing really slow four-four kick drums, so it was like dance music but just mellowed out. Like a simple ‘bommm-chh!’ on the one and the three. I just vibed on that, and dragged influences from others like Washed Out and Toro y Moi. I did Sleepless, and in the next two days I did two more tracks that ran in the same vein, and they all sounded fucking cool. And there I had it.

You’ve collaborated with many artists such as Chet Faker, T-Shirt and Moonlight Holiday. What has been the most interesting musical result in your opinion?
Well, I have to go off what has been most recent. I just spent a week with Chet Faker in a holiday house on the beach in Australia. We had an amazing time and wrote heaps and heaps of music. We came out of it with three tracks, all of which we are insanely pleased with. We plan to release it sometime this year.

The official worldwide release date of Sleepless is here. How do you feel?
Australia has been a real nice guinea pig tester for Sleepless, as it came out November 2011. It’s done great over here, so I feel quite confident about it. I really am hoping it does well over in the US!

This is a selfish question: “Insane” is my absolute favorite. Tell us how it came to be.
This is one of the earlier tunes on the album, and it came to be because of my love for trance music. The chord progression is reminiscent of euphoric chords that often pop up in that kind of music, which I paired up with a French-sounding flare. I had it as an instrumental initially, and then I decided to get in contact with Moon Holiday (who also had done stuff with Future Classic in the past), and we linked up and came up with what it is today.

You surpassed Biebs on the ARIA Albums Chart making it to number 1. Wow?
It’s awesome. Sleepless came out on the same day as One Direction, and we somehow beat them and ranked number one on the charts. We had no expectations of any of this. I’m just stoked that these younger girls are actually getting into the music, and instead of getting into Bieber, they’re listening to my album.

You just announced a huge tour; I’ve bought my tickets for Montreal already. How do you feel about it? Nervous?
It’s daunting to be honest. I’ve been on tour for the last like four months, so it seems endless at this point. I just got back from touring around Europe, Australia, and New Zealand, and now my other project What So Not is touring around Australia. And soon enough we’re off to the US for five weeks with Flume, and then a bunch of festivals! It’s going to be super fun though.

What’s going to happen with Flume in the future? Any idea what might be in the works?
Flume is going to be all about the live show expansion. We’re pouring heaps of money into this epic, crazy live show for you guys. We’ve got this huge infinity mirror with 6 LED screens in a hexagonal shape that showcases each unique projection for each song. You as an audience will be able to see when the kick drum hits, and when the hi-hats hit. It’s a good way to visualize the music. Beyond that, I’m thinking of taking it a step further and possibly getting a drummer in the mix, so it’s more of a band experience rather than a club event.

If you’re not familiar with Body Language and their disco-pop greatness, now’s the time. They’ve just released their FREE Grammar EP, and it’s really quite lovely.

As I listen through this five-track EP, I hear many different things: nu-disco, funk, R&B, pop, synth, and beyond. These are all great elements, obviously… but it’s the way Body Language went about constructing each song to perfection. And each song is perfection.

If you’re looking for something carefree, upbeat and incredibly infectious, you most definitely don’t want to miss Body Language. What’s even better is that they’ll be releasing a full length album this summer! Consider this a taste of what has yet to come.

Today we are graced with another mashup by The Hood Internet, and once again, they’ve hit a home run. This time its Usher’s “Climax” and Toro Y Moi’s “So Many Details” that gets the attention from the Chicago-based master mashers.

The track itself is ingenious, smooth, and suave. The combo of Usher’s “Climax” vocals layered over the “So Many Details” track simply works, for lack of better words. Sometimes I wonder how The Hood Internet even times the two tracks up like it’s some crazy mystery, but then I catch myself and decide that some things are better left unknown.

Job well done, ABX & Steve Sleeve.

Dog Bite is the project of Atlanta-based artist Phil Jones. Jones toured with Washed Out as keyboardist for them, and while on the road, he picked up an acoustic guitar. This lead to him transforming Dog Bite from a sampling based solo project into lo-fi garage band. His live outfit includes Woody Shortridge (bass), Stephen Luscre (guitar), William Fussell (guitar), and Cameron Gardner (drums).

“Would Be” is an experimental indie rock song which blends the lines of shoegaze and lo-fi garage rock. Its fuzzy guitar play mixes great with low-tuned vocals. The track was released as part of split seven inch with Toro Y Moi, whom Jones and his band will be touring North America with this winter (check the dates here).

Toro Y Moi has basically squeezed four instrumental hip-hop tracks into one four-minute span. It’s not a 100% fluid listen, but at the same time the samples connect quite well.

“Lying (Pt. 1-4)” was released today as part of a split seven inch single with the band Dog Bite, who are going on tour with Toro Y Moi for 2013 (dates here).

It’s a pretty interesting listen, but I hope his next album doesn’t sound like this…

Instead of the traditional approach of writing a song in lieu of the holidays, Dent May went ahead and wrote one about the apparently impending apocalypse.

“2099″ is a funky fresh dance track dedicated to living for the moment even “if we all die by a nuclear war/We’re gonna go out on the dancing floor.” Sounds like the best way to go to me!

There’s a slight 80s feel with this song by ways of the ever so suave saxophone. Topped off by an unavoidably upbeat tempo and stacked synth tones, this makes for the perfect apocalyptic dance song, don’t you think?

So whenever that day comes, have “2099″ in your arsenal because that, my friends, is the true definition of going out with a bang.

I’m so excited for Barcelona-based Cineplexx‘s new album, Perfume. It is a soft and pillowy portrayal of what is lovely and carefree in the indie pop world.

Perfume takes off with my favorite single, “Cosas de la Vida Normal,” and from there Cineplexx takes you on a journey of dream-filled ecstasy. It’s as if you’ve landed on a planet of cotton candy skies and funnel cake trees and all you need to do is lay on a black sand beach with the warm sun and cool breeze. Perfume very much takes on the island life. It’s breezy, laid back and classy. Many a moraca is played while delicate guitars strum their way to blissful oblivion, and the vocals serenade you into a peaceful twilight.

Are you convinced yet? I urge you to give Cineplexx’s Perfume a listen to warm up during this chilly season.

Yndi Ferreira DaSilva is the man behind Dream Koala. I was introduced to this beatmaker working out of Paris by my best friend; he crafts a soft electro sound weaved with raw emotion and organic guitar bends. Looking back, damn, am I ever thankful for that introduction.

Most of Dream Koala’s tracks (including the one I have chosen to feature, titled “Roofies”) musically radiate without relying too heavily on vocals. When whimsical lyrics are present, they are minimal and feature DaSilvia’s distinct voice.

Having released many highlight tracks since about ten months ago, including his groundbreaking XXYYXX “About You” remix, Dream Koala has arrived at his first EP, BLUR. Composed of five dreamwave, electro and shoeglaze compositions, DaSilva’s electro approach is smooth, fluent and tranquil.

When did your interest in music begin?
Since as long as I can remember my parents always had music on at home. Until today, it has never been silent at home. I started making music by tackling the guitar about five years ago. I then began playing in a group called I The Omniscient with my bros, which lead me to start my own endeavor. I decided to start Dream Koala because of inspiration I acquired through listening to guys like Washed Out, Toro Y Moi, Flying Lotus… and now, here I am!

In a few words, how would you describe your aesthetic style?
Well… It’s always been very difficult to describe myself as a musician. I tend to gravitate to a lot of guitar use and organic elements in my tracks so I don’t know if I can call it electronic. I consider my BLUR EP like a kind of shoegaze-influenced beat music. With that said, I can’t tell you how my sound is going to transgress in the future. I’d like to stay as open minded as I can and welcome change. I like to think I have my own genre.

Do you find that your young age is a drawback or an advantage in the industry?
When you’re eighteen in the music industry, I find it has helped to motivate people to talk about Dream Koala. I think since Tyler The Creator and various blogs are constantly looking for young talent, it’s been beneficial. But its kind of ridiculous when everybody jumps to talk about your age before even commenting on your music.

What is life like right now for you? Are you in school? Is it difficult to juggle work with music?
I dropped out of school this year. I couldn’t stand it anymore, I found it to be so boring. When I stopped school, I found myself always wanting to make music. Since now I don’t have to wake up at a certain time, I’m able to work on my own schedule. Right now, I’m beginning to work with a manager and a booking agency, which is a huge step for me. I’m really grateful that I’m now able to travel, tour and meet amazing people on my own time. It all came so quickly but I’m so glad it’s happening. I’m definitely feeling 2013. I stay positive, thank you Based God.

BLUR has recently been released. What are your thoughts on the EP now that it’s out for everyone to hear?
I’ve had some really cool feedback about BLUR. Thank you to all the people sharing that shit! I recorded this in my room with only my computer and my guitar with no expectations in my mind. Never did I think that I would play live shows and have that much support. It’s crazy.

What are some musicians/artists that inspire you?
I like artists who are open minded and who have their own genre like Coltrane, James Blake, Flying Lotus and Toro Y Moi. I can say The Number Twelve Looks Like You is my favorite band this moment. Right now, I’m also all about that Captain Murphy stuff.

Do you plan on touring across the pond in the future?
I hope I’ll be able to do a full blown tour soon! I love performing live in a place I am so comfortable in, but the thought of traveling to play in a place you’ve never been before is indescribable. When I envision performing in front of people who only know me through Dream Koala… It’s some magical stuff.

Do you have any hobbies that influence your music?
I don’t have any hobbies. I’m so lazy, but I think not having any hobbies influences my music. I love dinosaurs and talking shit on Twitter.

What song thus far are you most proud of?
I have no idea. All my tracks are very different to me, even if it may sound the same to people. My favorite tracks have not been released yet. You’ll hear it soon guys!

It’s been far too long since I’ve covered Kent Odessa, and I’m excited to inform all you shufflers about Kent’s new video for his single, “Bo Jackons.”

The video for this song is reminiscent of the times of Flashdance and cheesy dance art. What’s not to love? Of course the track itself is energetic and rhythmically infectious, adding a humorously entertaining video to the mix is like the cherry on top. Kent Odessa has a creative niche for all that is dance-worthy in this world. He brings the funk, electro pop, and a little avant-garde touch; all guaranteed to brighten up any drab day.

I’m really feeling Cosmic Kids’ remix of Princeton’s “Florida.” It’s an atmospheric dance track that’s perfect on a playlist purposely made for a fun time.

Have you seen the video for this remix? The guys over at Pier Pictures really know how to make a captivating, aesthetically pleasing piece of art. While Princeton’s original track is surely catchy and lovely to listen to, Cosmic Kids and Pier Pictures take it to a whole other level. I don’t know about you, but I’ve never seen a concept presented such as the video for this remix. The perspective that Pier Pictures brings to the forefront is refreshing and original — something that is few and far between these days. The visual concepts encapsulated are riveting and engaging, just like this single!

I love the visionary approach Pier Pictures took when constructing this. Their work truly sets the bar high for the rest of the game. As for Cosmic Kids, you always know you’re in for a good time when their music comes on. Buckle up!

What's so good?

Back in 2009, Memory Tapes was easily one of my most-listened to artists. I had his album Seek Magic on repeat while I read the somewhat-dark novel 100 Years of Solitude. So, there’s clearly some type of emotional association here.

His subsequent releases have gotten a bit more experimental, pushing the boundaries of a unique sound he had forged all his own. Trying to pinpoint or described exactly where he has landed is difficult, save to say that this new song “Neighborhood Watch,” the second off his upcoming album Grace/Confusion, is thoroughly dreamy (and growing on me quite quickly).

Dayve Hawk will be releasing the full album on December 4th.

Vinyl Williams is quite possibly my new favorite artist, and he’s gearing up to reissue his album, Lemniscate, on November 13.

On top of being an exceptional musician, Vinyl Williams is also a visual artist. He’s made numerous videos to accompany his music, and no two videos are the same. This time around, he’s released a video for his single “Higher Worlds,” and it’s basically like looking through a kaleidoscope, literally and figuratively. Vinyl Williams kraut-rock musical style perfectly complements the visual aesthetics of this single. He states:

“The images in “Higher Worlds” are made up of various religious aspects to form an idea of what it looks like to experience something extra-sensory, beyond the very limited one octave of our visual spectrum. The effect is amplified by degenerative processes, such as filming my computer screen as I’m building these 3D worlds, then transferring the footage of this digital environment into an analog composite signal, onto VHS, taking the VHS machine on a roller coaster as it’s laying over in real-time, to encounter natural distortions and imperfections.”

Toro Y Moi has just announced the release of his So Many Details 7″ in honor of Record Store Day on November 23. Oh, and he’ll be releasing an LP, Anything In Return, on January 22. This guy cannot be stopped.

“So Many Details” is one half of his 7″. This song is definitely on the mellower side of what Toro Y Moi usually puts out. That doesn’t mean that it lacks creativity or gusto; it’s actually nice to see a musician explore different avenues within their creative style. This time around, Toro Y Moi has taken a down tempo R&B approach, and it’s really quite a smooth and lightly funked-out track.

With the amount of ambition that Toro Y Moi has had from the start, I’m always intrigued to hear what he’s coming up with time and time again. It seems as though he’s releasing something new every other month. So mark your calendars! There’s no slowing down for Toro Y Moi.

What's so good?

Less than a month has passed since the last time we featured Blackbird Blackbird, and that shouldn’t be a surprise really. I think he’s on the verge of a releasing a new EP titled Boracay Planet, so today’s reveal of the single “All” was somewhat anticipated.

I’ve noted that it often seems this particular artist can’t make his mind up about genre direction. But, with “All,” he’s clearly establishing himself as a pro in the chillwave niche. In fact, this sounds so much so like the best elements of Memory Tapes, Toro Y Moi and Neon Indian that…basically, I’m digging it a bunch.

Quoting the press release on this one:

Blackbird Blackbird shows off his pop sensibilities in “All”, thick with echoing guitar plucks and soothing, lightly-treated vocals. Chiming synths and fluttering clicks splash color on top of a melancholic tone. Clean four-to-the-floor beats and a lovely synth lead dissipate into dreamlike samples of incomprehensible speech and smooth, lapping waves. Distal remixes Blackbird Blackbirdʼs “Keep It Up” into a dark, barreling techno track. Blackbirdʼs crooning vocals stab into the rolling kick drum, complete with frenetic bubbling effects. The beat is broken up with touches of two-step futurism and at the very end, a playful flute appears to brighten the fade out.

What's so good?

I’m SO excited about Cineplexx! The man behind the band is Sebastián Litmanovic, and he’s got a lot of people talking. “Cosas de la Vida Normal” is the intro track off of Cineplexx’s upcoming album, Perfume, and if this is any indication of how the rest of the album will be then prepare yourself for a party.

Right from the start of this track, the beat is sure to get you moving. The instrumentals are vibrant and flowing while beautifully complementing Sebastián’s relaxed, airy vocals. Imagine you were driving to the beach on a bright and sunny day in a convertible with an ice cream cone, your dog and some of your favorite people. This song would have to be playing.

October is almost here and that means we are closer to obtaining Cineplexx‘s album, Perfume. Stay tuned!

What's so good?

Vinyl Williams is an L.A.-based artist and musician creating gorgeous psych pop — you’ll probably get pleasantly lost in his kraut and shoegaze creations. Take “Harmonious Change” for example.

This track is so fresh and airy that it makes for a perfect day off spent in the breezy sun with not a care in the world. As you listen, keep in mind that everything that you hear is creaated solely by Mr. Williams. His ethereal style is surely a cut above the rest; the song is drenched in reverberated everything: the guitars, the synths, his vocals. Every element is tastefully mixed so nothing sounds overdone or out of place.

Vinyl Williams‘ album, Lemniscate, is a one-man project through and through. I’d recommend you mark your calendars for his album to be re-released on November 13.
