While walking home from the train station the other night, I felt compelled to listen to Nujabes' Spiritual State. For the unfamiliar, Nujabes was a 36-year-old Japanese producer who lost his life in a car accident in 2010. Spiritual State is an album released just under two years after his death, featuring the beatmaker's previously unreleased material.
Nujabes holds a special place in my heart. There's such life in his beats, and listening to his breezy, effortless instrumentals reminds me of my humanity. If that was enough, Spiritual State also features some truly elevated hip-hop. One of those cuts is titled "City Lights." It was the first song I ever hyped for Indie Shuffle, which is something you'll need to know for next week's test.
"City Lights" features a Virginia MC named Substantial, who also appears on the track featured above, "Waiting For The Clouds." Man, oh man, do Nujabes and Substantial go together like cats and naps.
Quick tip: listening to this track twice a day is a great way to combat Badtasteinrapitosis.
