Okay. Admittedly when I heard this new single from Kieran Hebden’s label TEXT, I definitely assumed it was a Four Tet production. Blame it on streaming while busing, call it a user error, whatever. The thing is, this track from producer Percussions sounds EXACTLY LIKE FOUR TET.
This is absolutely not a complaint. Mr. Hebden is one of my favorite artists hands down, so having more music in his aesthetic is more than optimal. It is just surprising that it’s so similar, which leads us speculators to think that this enigmatic Percussions has to have ties to Four Tet further than just being on his label. Also of note is that Four Tet recently completed a mix called “Conference of the Birds” last April. Is this a conspiracy? Maybe, just maybe…
To the actual music, “Bird Songs” is really a fantastic production. With an extremely penetrating beat and clear forethought with the cacophony of birds singing along to the melody, the track is striking and intelligent. The stand alone nature of the percussion with the chirping renders a stupendously earthy, primal overtone to the track. Kudos, Percussions, whoever you may actually be.
