Full disclosure: I am a complete noob when it comes to Juke music. That said, I was pretty intrigued when I stumbled upon this project. An artist out of the UK taking his namesake from Romare Bearden, the American artist most known for his collage work, has painstakingly crafted this EP entitled Meditations on Afrocentrism.
According to the description from Black Acre Records:
The result of a year spent researching, sampling and conceptualising, Meditations On Afrocentrism draws connections between “the history of African and African-American culture in the form of collage to create musical conversations between the past, present and future”. The project manifests as four compositions weaving samples of songs, speeches, interviews, field recordings and film, syncing rhythms from Africa with voices from Harlem and up-to-the-second memes imported from influential US dance styles.
Very engaging concept with enjoyable results; my kinda shit all day, every day.
