Oh Hey, St. Patrick's Day
Friday Five

What's so good?

By | March 16th, 2012

Let’s not mess around here. We all know what St. Patrick’s Day is really about — sure, maybe at one point it had something to do with like, a saint, but now it’s about the Guinness. And the Jameson. And the crappy beers suddenly sporting green labels. And any other drink that finds itself in your hand circa 11 am this Saturday.

In that vein, this week’s Friday Five are songs that make you want to throw down, and throw back the whiskey. If you’re me, that means a collection of ’70s style proto-punk/glam rock. Try it out, and don’t say I didn’t warn you.

"The Replacements - Hangin Downtown"
Sometimes, you've gotta go to the source. And the source for so much of today's awesome punk-esque rock is The Replacements. Cause music this good never loses its edge.

Download
"LCD Soundsystem - Jump Into The Fire (Harry Nilsson Cover)"
A B-side off Daft Punk Is Playing At My House, this is LCD at their rock 'n' roll best. Covering Nilsson, a staple of the '70s New York scene (he wrote "Everybody's Talkin'" from Midnight Cowboy), you can see why this was a staple of LCD's live shows.

Download
"The Black Keys - Gold On The Ceiling"
T. Rex?? Is that you? Oh no, it's The Black Keys, my oft-professed favorite band. Their ability to channel this awesomely bombastic glam rock sound further proves why they are great.

Download
"Deer Tick - Let's All Go to the Bar"
The name of this track says it all -- the sound off Deer Tick's more recent album is pure Ramones/Replacements. A perfect combo for your drinking days.

Download
"Black Lips - New Direction"
Couldn't you see the Black Lips rocking CBGB, or some equally crusty New York-style rock club back in the day? I can. I'm down to rock out to them still, even without the risk of flying bottles.
