What's so good?

The city is drowning, water is spilling all around you — and all the while your lover is lazily “painting a picture of full of fields, dreaming [their] life away.”  The city begins to sink into the ocean while the people “around dispassionately gaze at the chaos.  But at the last moment, you yell, “Let me up, let all the hurt become the past. You know I don’t stand a chance here.” It’s life as Atlantis, and fleeing from that watery grave.

I can’t believe just how beautiful the metaphor is in this song by Starfucker. “Atlantis” is  their latest off of Miracle Mile, and weirdly enough has a similar theme as the recent Cold War Kids track of the same name: that of coming up for air.

Also, mystical and historical cities seem to be a recurrent theme lately, as evidenced by Bastille’s recent single “Pompeii.” I think it’s a sign of a totalizing escapism that’s finding its way into music lately; and what’s more dramatic in that vein than fleeing a city (with all that you hold dear in it) that you can never return to?

We’ve covered a few singles off Miracle Mile already on Indie Shuffle, and I’m really looking forward to its official release on February 19, 2013. If you like them as much as I do, you can pre-order the album now over at Polyvinyl Records.

What do you think?
