End of Summer Playlist 2012

What's so good?

By | September 1st, 2012

As the summer ends and fall nears, most are packing their bags to return to their respective schools while others are left saying, “I wish I was going back to college, instead of dragging to work everyday.”

To help us remember the summer as its end fast approaches, here’s a playlist of my favorite summertime songs — songs that represent the roller coaster of emotions caused by the hot weather, beach days, music festivals, and hot tub parties.

All of those summery activities are awesome, but often times come with baggage. You know what I’m talking about: relationship drama. The break-ups, and the FML “I’m cleaning out my Facebook and getting new friends,” type of baggage that can turn you summer bliss into a seasonal nightmare.

Everyone has their own musical palette, so this list won’t be agreed upon by all, but this is my 10 song summer playlist and all of its bullshit carry-ons.

"Kid Cudi - Day N' Nite (Dave Wrangler Remix)"
The moment I finished my last final of my senior year of college, I jumped in the whip and bumped this funky tune down Mass Ave. There is so much to be proud of during that defining moment when you complete your senior year and undergraduate career. Dave Wrangler's remix of The Moon Man's classic "Day 'N' Nite" is burgeoning with a party of horns, synths and an afro-punk bass line that commands your shoulders to that Cat Daddy bounce while that Kool-Aid smile is plastered across your face.

"Frank Ocean - Sweet Life"
Okay, so I could not spend a day at the beach and not obsessively hit replay whenever Frank Ocean's "Sweet Life" played. Sand between my toes, my stylish Ray Bans handy, a bag full of beers (Brooklyn Lagers please!) and the soulful, relaxing stylings of Mr. Ocean made the days at the beach even more enjoyable. Seriously, if I lived on the beach I wouldn't want to see some parts the world. It didn't matter if your boss was incessantly pressuring you or your significant other was being obnoxious. Lord, knows no matter the inconvenience, the beach is always the perfect solution.

"Lana Del Rey - Summertime Sadness (Hannes Fischer Remix)"
There's a saying that goes, "When you’re happy, you enjoy the music. But, when you’re sad, you understand the lyrics." I think some would agree that Lana Del Rey's music can be the voice of a broken heart. The melodramatic vibe of "Summertime Sadness" is on my playlist because it has probably been played in many rooms over the sounds of the tears caused by the summer break-up.

Download
"Fauxe - Thanks Ms Panda"
Fauxe's "Thanks Ms Panda" and all chillwave tracks alike were great for those moody moments summer was destined to catapult you in. While, the reasons for these moody spats are different across the spectrum, the minimal electronica strips you of any emotion and allows your body to ride the ambient waves. I already envision some females contorting and grinding their bodies to this orgiastic sound. So stop thinking, and free your body.

Download
"A$AP Rocky Ft. A$AP Ant & Flatbush Zombies - Bath Salts"
Errbody has a little mobbin' in them, so when you felt like getting the trillest essence, A$AP Rocky made sure to supply those needs with lethal lyrics and precision production all through out the summer. I don't know -- whenever I listen to "Bath Salts" I feel like there's an imaginary presence behind me. I'm not talking about that type of spirit you think is chasing you when running up a flight of stairs. (We've all done it.) It's a mob presence, one that makes me feel like I can accomplish anything I decided to do because I have an army of goons to my left, right and behind me. Hood dreams, oh, well...

Download
"xxyyxx - About U"
So, with the summer comes more spare time (in some cases) and idle time can result in drug indulgence. Some people enjoy loud music when they're under the influence and others prefer a more chillwave atmosphere. Xxyyxx's "About You" offers a relaxed sensation with a wobble bass line to reinforce the psychological effects that your body is already experiencing. I mean, the song literally says, "I slipped you a roofie," so it seemed fitting.

Download
"Ellie Goulding - Hanging On (Sound Remedy Remix)"
Ellie Goulding, without a doubt, had an amazing summer -- releasing "Hanging On," "Anything Could Happen," and countless number of remixes to her hit single "Lights." Sound Remedy's remix was the "sure fire" solution to a rainy summer day that squelched an evening with friends. Sound Remedy's dubstep breaks and massive bass patterns turned nights of boredom into fleshly musical experiences. Needless to say, this track erased the stigma attached to "staying in."

Download
"Azealia Banks - Jumanji"
Azealia Banks is a refreshing alternative to that female who "B's or bee's in the trap." Bank's summer consisted of her debut album, Broke With Expensive Taste, being delayed until February 12, 2013 and Twitter beefs on Twitter beefs on Twitter beefs. However, these slight bumps in the road didn't distract the Harlem rapper from demanding attention from the public and the blogosphere with her grimy creative music.

Download
"Van She & Moon Boots - Jamaican Sugar"
I enjoy music festivals A LOT, so when I heard this number during an intermission I had to ask around and discover the artist. Van She has some powerful tracks, but "Jamaican Sugar" sounds and smells like a summer music festival. I'm lounging on the grass, sipping my drank - please, don't disturb me, just, stream and comment.

Download
"Diplo - Express Yourself (Gent & Jawns Remix): Fresh Trap & Moonbahtan Remix)"
With the 2012 Summer Playlist coming to an end, I select Diplo's trapped out "Express Yourself (Gent & Jawns Remix): Fresh Trap & Moonbahtan Remix)" to carry everyone into the Fall season. The current trap music movements' nativity is in hip-hop, but it has received new life being fused with electronic bass and I LOVE IT!  Happy trolling... Congratulations to the Class of '13 and good luck to all first-year students. Make mistakes and learn from them. Enjoy the last days of summer everyone!
