A Trip to Australia
Sunday Night Chill

What's so good?

By | September 30th, 2012

Australia is a music lover’s paradise, with incredible talent rampant within their relatively small population (just under 23 million).

While a lot of acts receive the lion’s share of local (and international) success, some genres are often overlooked. The growing beats/electronica community seems to be one of those under-appreciated groups, often hidden behind Australia’s pop, rock and dance acts. It seems silly considering the sheer volume of incredible music being put out, so surely this will be a temporary oversight.

For tonight’s Sunday Night Chill, here’s a pick of some of the smoothest acts currently doing the rounds. Enjoy, mate.

"The Townhouses - Alpine - Villages (The Townhouse Remix)"
A member of the Yes Please Records fraternity (which also includes Oliver Tank and Guerre), Leigh Hannah aka the Townhouses has developed a habit for producing striking down-tempo tracks. Here’s his take on Alpine’s single “Villages.”

"Option Command - Same Line"
Blue Mountains resident Martyn Palmer makes a bunch of super-chilled beats under the guise of Option Command. A bit of a Jekyl/Hyde character, you should check out his ambient alter-ego Broken Chip.

"Seekae - Reset Head"
One of Australia’s most critically acclaimed electronic acts in recent years, Sydney’s Seekae have been around since 2006. This track was taken from last year’s +Dome, the follow-up to the 2008 release The Sound of Trees Falling On People, which was described by FBi Radio as being one of the Australia’s top ten albums of the decade.

"Thrupence - White Kite"
Thrupence is the solo project of 21-year-old musician and visual artist Jack Vanzet. His Voyages EP was released earlier this year to great fanfare, but this track is an older release from the talented Melbourne-based artist.

"Albatross - Murder"
Sydney-duo Albatross have been crafting silky-smooth electronica for a couple of years now. Beat-based, they’ve become known for their energetic stage presence, and are due to support Four-Tet on his trip to Australia later this year.
