Sunday Night Chill

What's so good?

By | September 9th, 2012

This week, I wrote a little summary for each lovingly hand-picked Sunday Night Chill track, which you can find sitting under every song listed below.

It’s difficult to focus SNC playlists around a particular theme or feeling, because in general the atmospheric tracks we feature all share similar characteristics: minimal electronica peppered with synths, mellow keyboards, and a slight coolness (hence the playlist name). But if you pushed me to explain what made me select each of the songs below for this week, I would have to say that they all put my mind elsewhere — on a beach at night, in a fog-filled forest, on some curving road deep in Northern California.

But perhaps that’s what Sunday Night Chill is all about, anyway. So go ahead, step into this week’s melodic soundscape and enjoy the escape.

"Kodomo - Decoder"
Kodomo's "Decoder" weaves together an elaborate synth-infused landscape with bells and electric beats. At one point, WhiteNoise made a pretty good dubstep remix of the single, but I prefer the original.

"Tycho - Coastal Brake"
I think I could create an entire Sunday Night Chill using only Tycho songs. While doing some research to create this week's playlist, I was surprised to find that we had only covered "Coastal Brake" in the form of this Lusine remix, and so the original track finds a place at number two. It kind of reminds me of driving down Pacific Coast Highway at midnight (something I was inclined to do quite often at age 17).

"A.M. Architect - Unspoken "
This A.M. Architect track is a little on the upbeat side for my SNC taste, but has some lovely guitar work and a really rich undertone.

"Berry White - Walking By Your Side"
While Berry Weight's description as "a soulful electro-organic-space-jazz duo, harmonizing storybook-like melodies and cinematic atmospheres" might sound over-the-top, their track "Walking By Your Side" does not disappoint.

"Marbert Rocel - Love Me"
And finally, while I'm not inclined to post songs with vocals on Sunday Night Chill playlists, Marbert Rocel's "Love Me" was so soothing and jazzy that I just couldn't resist.

What do you think?
