I’ve covered Until the Ribbon Breaks a few times this year, but this remix… oh, it blew my mind. Tegan and Sara are certainly capable of a lewd lyric here and there, but if I had one complaint about their new LP, Heartthrob, it was that it tattooed its hopeless romantic card on its forehead. Enter Until the Ribbon Breaks to corrupt those idyllic beats.
Their remix is for those nights when lasciviously libidinal thoughts liquor up your brain, leaving Sweet Valley High romance fantasies to languish in some better part of yourself. You’re bordering on blotto, your eyes drenched in animalistic erotica — and everyone can see it in you. Then you move from the wall of the club into the orgy of bodies on the dance floor, letting the music and fellow lost soul travelers tear you apart.
Until the Ribbon Breaks soundtrack a night of feeling comfortably numb, where life can be gained from letting go. However, despite the highly suggestive splicing of the lyrics and filthy beats, it succeeds entirely on perverting the naivete and sweetness of Tegan and Sara’s original. It’s that constant hearkening back to a less carnal you tugging at each bar of the song that keeps it from drowning in its own drunken debauchery and opening it — and you — to a whole new set of experiences.
