On the outside, you could conclude that The Cinematic Orchestra are just a few guys, but they are much, much more than that. Jason Swinscoe, Phil France, Luke Flowers, Tom Chant, Nick Ramm and Stuart McCallum have formed a sound that is unimaginably distinct and multifaceted with acoustic splendor.
“Music Box” is featured on their 2007 album titled Ma Fleur, which Swinscoe calls his “soundtrack to an imaginary film.” The result is simple: vivid, complex, surreal and well, cinematic. In this particular track, The Cinematic Orchestra invited Patrick Watson and Lou Rhodes to vocally assist in curating the piece.
As a huge Patrick Watson fan, I almost automatically love anything he stamps his name on, this song being one of those instances. His and Rhodes’ vocals hum melodic exquisiteness, accompanying the song’s sweeping scope. Although the entire five minutes is gorgeous, 1:29 gets me every time. This is the equivalent of me giving you a warning.
