Any Shufflers remember this song from the Fight Club soundtrack? Raise your hands if you sat in your room and listened to Pixies‘ original version and thought anarchy was going to destroy capitalism (*raises hand*). Raise your hand if you still do (*halfheartedly waves*).
Well, this cover by Parisian duo Total Warr is not that track. Sure the bare bones exist, but they’ve taken it to an entirely new level.Sampling Jay-Z’s “Empire State of Mind” throughout and introducing some exquisite electric guitar, the song becomes a self-empowerment anthem for life beyond the Oughties. Total Warr’s remix reverses Ali’s maxim by having its stanzas sting like a bee, but its choruses inextricably float like a butterfly.
This turns the infamous, angsty Fight Club track into a dance floor anthem perfect for transcendence over your struggles. By the time the last guitar solo rears its head in the bridge, you might just be fist pumping the air along side me.Total Warr like to consider themselves reminiscent of an era when MGMT was fun, and I think this brilliant cover/remix proves makes that belief apt.
Kiki and Guigui are really nice guys, and were kind enough to upload this track to SoundCloud, so be sure to go and check them out over there and on their Facebook, and watch out for their Loisy EP, dropping January 29, 2013.
