Travis$ Scott is a 19-year-old Houston native, and a perfect hybrid of everything I like about hip hop and electronic music. I was just talking to a friend about how those two genres love to flirt with each other, and here “Lights (Love Sick)” illustrates that musical babies are indeed being made.
So, yes — Travis$ Scott sounds a lil like Yeezy here, but not elsewhere. Elsewhere, his style is everywhere like a bona fide genre hopper/envelope pusher should be. If you’re still trying to nail him down, take into account that his influence include Toro y Moi, Esthero, Lykke Li, Victoria Monet, Tommy Brown, Neon Indian, Diplo, Skrillex, Miike Snow, Beyonce, M.I.A., Mr. Hudson, Active Child, and Waka Flocka. That sounds like perfectly organized chaos to me, and it reflects in his tracks.
Travi$ is moving up fast, so catch up now. It’s all him, from the vocals to the production to the video editing — showing that if you want a job done right, you gotta do it yourself. His next project, Owl Pharaoh, should be dropping right before this summer.
