After having seen Young Magic literally tear up Le National in Montreal, Canada opening for Purity Ring, I have become infatuated with them. For those who are not familiar, Young Magic is a collective based in Brooklyn, New York, and has members hailing from anywhere from Australia to Indonesia. Talk about diverse.
Michael Italia, Melati Malay and Isaac Emmanuel are those responsible for creating these sounds that are rich in experiment. The NY Times describes their quality as “lush and immersive,” which manages to “summon an elusive mood of longing within the sonic wonderment.”
Off of their latest offering titled Melt, we are exposed to an array of integrated genres and subgenres, including “You With Air,” catapulting Melt into a place with grungy melody and a hypnotic use of electronic accents. With elongated and flowing vocals courtesy of Melati Malay’s coo and Isaac Emmanuel’s secondary part-rap part-crooning, this track proves to be a great introduction to their ambivalent style.
As The Music puts it: ”Melt is the alternate universe you’ve been searching for. A stunning debut.” We have found our universe, Shufflers.
