Agua Roja: a French band with a Spanish name and English lyrics. Don't you feel more cultured already?
These three Parisians have been around for about a year, only five songs deep into a blossoming catalog of easy-listening tunes. The latest of these is "Joey," a new single that sounds like a free-flowing river of liquid heartache (in a good way).
Cut from the same silky cloth as bands like Real Estate and Beach House, you'll immediately fall into a satisfied daze from their airy instrumentals, but lead singer November's drifting melodies are what really accent their sound. When "Joey" reaches its chorus she sings:
"Cause I'm going mad
Nothing's right without you
Yeah I'm going mad
I obsess over you"
You'll be saying the same thing about the song as soon as you hear it.
Their social media activity is almost entirely in the language of their homeland, so I have little hope of extracting anything useful from it despite my two college semesters of B+ French. Fortunately, however, French 24 did a wonderful interview with them last year that reveals some interesting little tidbits.
The aforementioned November first began writing songs in English so that her words would be kept secret from her Spanish mother, who couldn't speak the language. She was also a music blogger (one of us, one of us) before performing became a full-time gig.
Obviously her relationship with music is an intimate one, and it's quite palpable when you listen to Agua Roja's gorgeous work.
