Why do we like this?
It's a hard world for musicians out there -- they're faced with the obstacle of creating a new, interesting sound against the background noise of their successful predecessors. I very rarely hear a new song these days that doesn't remind me of something I've heard before (hence, the "Sounds like?" section on these posts). It's not bad to have influences, in fact, I'm even more impressed with a track when it takes elements of popular music trends but twists them in a different direction.

Alex Winston is a perfect example of an artist who is trying to carve her own sound in the big indie pop mountain. Her warbling voice is a little Joanna Newsom meets Lykke Li, and her songs range from dancey anthems ("Locomotive") to lovely acoustics ("Don't Care About Anything"). It's hard to truly judge her sound based on the six songs off her EP Sister Wife, but I'm loving the poppy beats that channel Tegan & Sara.

Right now she's working on a debut full-length with with New York production duo The Knocks. In the meantime, you can check out most of her tracks on SoundCloud.
