Sounds like:
The Weeknd,
Ellie Goulding,
Janelle Monáe
Why do we like this?
Dubstep and electronica fans, listen up!
This San Francisco native has got the goods and is creating a hard-hitting sound to back it up. Not too long ago, I was sitting in my friends apartment having a drink or three when all of the sudden I heard this angelic voice singing Florence + the Machine's "Cosmic Love" from across the room. Because I have a perpetual adoration for Florence, my ears gleefully perked up and I became instantly drawn to her sound and wanted -- no, needed -- to hear more.
Produced by BigTunes, "Death Do Us Part" is Cole's first solo release. The track fluctuates between slow tempos and rapid rhythms with soulful, spellbinding vocals blending it all together beautifully. As far as dubstep tracks go, this is one of the better ones I've heard. Lyrically it's quite heartbreaking; musically it's adequately hypnotizing.
During high school, Cole entered a program here in San Francisco called the DJ Project which offers teens the opportunity to learn audio production, song writing, and gives them the chance to record their own music and make a demo. This was the first exposure she had to making original music and has been ever since. Starting off her music career, she was the frontwoman for an R&B group of hip-hop artists, all from the same audio production class. Since then she has strayed away from R&B to focus on her solo career with a solid focus on heavy bass, slow tempos and dubstep sounds.
"Death Do Us Part" is just a taste of what Cole has started to create. Hopefully we will all be seeing more of her with new track releases or even a full project. In the meantime you can listen to it exclusively on Indie Shuffle or download the track on her SoundCloud for free.
