Who are Gateway Drugs? Well, interestingly enough, there are actually two answers: 1) an experimental noise-rock band based out of LA; 2) a chillwave band based out of Cape Town. This post focuses on the latter.
A little over a week ago, Gateway Drugs released their debut album Dare Tonight, which also happens to be the title of this song.
"Dare Tonight" takes a safe approach to music making with a sound that'll likely remind the untrained ear of 80s synth-pop. For others, comparison to the likes of Washed Out and MillionYoung will no doubt be at the top of mind.
But Dare Tonight is no one-trick pony. Its 10 tracks twist and turn through synth-pop variation, each conveying their own fuzzy take on the chillwave genre.
In doing so, the LP properly cements them as the genre's premiere band in the region, with support from Red Bull Studios CT and naas driving the point home.
